Bobby Heenan said it in a interview years ago, giving up the secrets of the trade on the internet and openly admitting what was faked would be the nail in the coffin
@BUPMY1 general audiences always had suspicion, but never concrete evidence so there was always the shadow of doubt, or as Dutch says suspension of disbelief. It has lost that magic
@Kancerru i can agree to this. I think if their intention is to get fans to watch the whole show, uninterrupted, then 3 hours is as long as it should go. If that isn't the goal, and the goal is just to get people to watch more of the product overall, then they could do a 24 hour channel. I think what they are doing, at least a little, is knowing that more time translates to more views, either on the live show or on the website. If fans skip an hour each week and only watch 2 hours, they'll most likely catch the highlights on the wwe RUclips channel, which translates to more traffic for their channel. People are still going to watch what they missed, so extending it another hour translates into more views, and it does really matter if they watch it live or all at once.
@troysmith5749 i watch about 2 hours per week. Because I can choose to not watch an entire program. Nobody is forcing you to watch, so don't watch all 3 hours. You're acting like wwe wronged you in some way because now you HAVE TO watch another hour. Is you're brain damaged?
10:50 2 Hours of RAW is perfectly fine since they are taking AD breaks. There's no need for 3 hours shows unless it's a PPV you watch once every 3-4 months. 1 more hour of RAW (and Smackdown) means: -more storylines needed (things get repetitive) -more people need to wrestle (how can i miss you if you dont go away?) -more filler.
Nitro did 3 hours the right way, recaps and low-mid card matches the first hour, backstage antics and promos the second hour, and the hyped up matches in the last hour
USA used to show live MSG cards on Monday every month live, and from Capital Center in Washington DC on Tuesday every month in 81-82, maybe into 83 when Vince Sr still ran the company. I got those cards live in their entirety at 5PM in San Francisco.
@@dhotnessmcawesome9747 Not really. German Speaking countries (Austria, Germany, Switzerland) aren't getting anything on Netflix (at least until March 2026, possibly 2028, depending on who you believe about the length of the current rights deal). Instead, the WWE Network remains alive over here for the PLEs and old content and they are continuing to show the weekly shows on free TV, albeit still not live and only with German commentary, sadly.
Smackdown being 3 hours and only available on cable, with dynamite, collision, and RAW all being on streaming this year... theres zero reason to pay for cable JUST to watch smackdown and being 3 hours makes it even less attractive to watch.

I remember cutting my teeth on Central States All Star Wrestling in the late 70s and all you would get was 1 hour a week. Now I know Dutch just despised The KC area. That 1 hour a week was the best hour of the week for my 6 year old me. That was all the wrestling I could get on my 3 channels until I went into town years later to a friends house that had cable then I would see the 6:05 Crockett show. The they came out with a loop antenna and I could watch some Mid South.
Here's an idea for WWE... BUILD A PHYSICAL HoF! Lease the rights for the tape vault to the HoF. Let us, the fans, enjoy our favorite wrestlers, promotions, PPV's and matches where we can find it all in one place. Refine the app/service to be easier to use, with no ads, and a small fee that goes back to the guys
Most people as far as I know have already had Netflix for many years if someone just got Netflix for the first time tomorrow they would probably have years worth of stuff to watch no matter what type of shows you like
2 hours seems optimal for me. If they want to add more content in order to fully use their roster they should consider making another show with a different vibe.
2 isn't enough. The 4 main feuds take up the entire 2 hrs, every week. There's no extra time to showcase new talent and build new stars. 4 feuds. That breaks down to 30 mins each, minus commercials, so about 20 mins for each feud. Cody comes down to talk and his entrance takes 5 minutes. He talks for 5 minutes. When it's time for his match he has to do another 5 minute entrance, and the opponent gets a 3 minute entrance. That's 18 mins before they even wrestle. Plus 2 minutes for after match shenanigans. We're up to 20 minutes now. The match will be 2 commercials long, so about 20 minutes. Now we have one feud taking up 40 minutes of air time out of 80. That's half the show time for one feud. Now the other feuds have 40 minutes to split between them. So about 13 minutes each. They have to do backstage segments, entrances, post match shenanigans. There's really not a lot of time in 2 hours.
2 hours of densely packed content would be much better... but I get it... it's all about the advertising. Glad I'm international so I can watch it on netflix and skip through all the filler.
Man... Funny to think back in the 80's when I was little. And only getting WWF's Saturday 30 minute show and saying "I wish wrestling would be longer." Now I'm just tired thinking about watching 3 hours of anything.

Dutch's expression at the end of this video summed it up, "and." The problem with AEW is it needs a booker and things need to change. Unfortunately, the person running it doesn't see it this way. Every wrestling show on television that airs weekly should only be two hours, the least one hour. It's too much wrestling being aired today, which causes burnout. Back in the day, the promoter gave you enough, so you can come back to see more later. Today, it's too much at once, which makes you look for" What's next." That's how you get tired, bored and burnt out.

How is Dutch and the boomer wrasslin fan going to last three hours. Three hours...that is one long night of wrasslin, their aren't even any yellow belly wrasslers, like that Lawler around, willing to duke it out in an empty arena. What can they possibly show for so many minutes?
The "other dude" that co-hosted Prime Time with Jesse Ventura in '84 was Jack Reynolds. He was friggin' horrible. Seriously, one of the worst play-by-play men that ever existed in pro wrestling. The guy sucked so badly at commentary. He made David Crockett seem like Solie by comparison.
It seems like their creative team has to adjust before they put on a strong show with an adjusted format. As for Smackdown, I believe Chelsea Green can become the hottest female talent by firing Piper Niven and hiring Pretty Deadly as human shields (because Chelsea doesn’t believe that it’s right for a man to strike a woman. ✋) The appeal to her matches would be comedic segments that result in montages of the female talent completing devastating moves on Chelsea’s beta males that in turn sell the moves to picture perfection.
It was bad enough when they went to 3hrs on Raw and now they’ve done it to Smackdown! It’s too much and you’ve over saturating the wrestling business especially with NXT & AEW’s shows also on it’s all too much! Raw should be 2hrs and Smackdown 90 minutes max because you put people off by giving them too much it’s like with anything a slice of a triple chocolate cake is nice but if you eat the whole cake it will make you sick (not unless you’re 500lbs/226kg/35 stone person who probably would eat 2 whole cakes and would be fine). You want to make your fans to be desperate to see what’s going to happen next week on Raw by giving them a little so they can’t wait for what’s going to happen next,, but giving your fans 6 hours a week (not counting NXT) it puts people off as there’s so much content people get bored. Raw was great as a live 1 hour show when it first started and even 2 hours was good at the beginning of the Attitude Era and WWE only went from 1 hour to 2 hours then to 3 hours was WCW did it first with Nitro so they did it to compete. But soon as the Monday night war ended and WWE bought WCW they should’ve gone back to 2 hours and kept Smackdown to 1 hour. But wrestling was so hot at the time the TV channels wanted to have as much content as possible plus the extra money from advertisers also helped WWE keep the show to 3 hours and that’s why Smackdown has gone to 3 hours. But at the end of the day WWE is a business and making more money comes before the fan needs. And they probably think that’s what the fans want but it’s not as it’s all too much
When I first started watching cable in 1982, all programs on WTBS(the Superstation) started at either :05 or :35 plus they showed every Braves game.
