@Jake S you detach it from the tablet, walk outside to the middle of your garden and start spinning fastly... then at a random moment you just let it go...
Ciscopete24 was it worth the price? Im looking for one but for my graphic design student needs id need at least 8 gb ram and 250 gb memory. But that's nearly $2000 without pen and keyboard
I found the dock caused my SP3 to thermal throttle like crazy - it was like wrapping it in a blanket. Would love you guys to test this if you end up doing a full blown review. Doesn't look like it's worth it though.
Next time you review this can you not dismiss the idea of using it for drawing? In one review I remember Linus saying something along the lines of "Content creators are just going to go with Wacom," not understanding that the entire reason artist look at stuff like this is Wacom has a monopoly and overcharges for every single product they have.
But, when you invest in Wacom products you get the support and the community most manufactures don't or can't supply to there consumers. I'm personally glad that Wacom has this much competition now as no one company should overtake a niche. But as it stands, Wacom's customer service, quality control, and community interactions are always top noch!
Also students, don't forget about the students. It's the only option I could find apart from the outdated samsung galaxy note 10.1(2014 edition) FUCKING 2014!
I don't care if it means that I'm paying 3 to 4 thousand dollars for a screen with a pen, when the competition is starting to put out similar offerings for 600-1 thousand dollars.
TrueDPS the old gen pen is included, but if you want the new version (with twice the pressure sensitivity and tilt support) you'll have to buy it seperately
I would understand to not include the keyboard (though still silly when they heavily trying to market it as a laptop replacement), but not having a pen included for free makes it just another tablet that don't have one out-of-the-box. IMO, tablet should have at least a pen these days. Tablet form-factor are just really suited for it, not just for consumption especially large tablets such as Surface Pro. These large tablets are not that ideal for casual everyday consumption, even iPad Pro which is thinner and lighter is still bulky just for that. Large tablets are really meant for productivity.
I bought the iPad Pro 12.9" specifically to use Sketchbook Pro only to find that perspective tools and other features aren't available on iPad no matter how much money i pay. I had to pay an extra $100.00 for the apple pencil. I don't know if this is as expensive as an iPad pro 12.9" but I do know that if full programs are a must in your Sketchbook Pro I find my old Surface Pro 1 (yes the first one) will have more features than the iPad Pro because it's a full program not a little restricted app.
I agree, that and the fact that Microsoft still hasn't caught on to the idea of including the keyboard and pen (Y'know, the parts that make this product worth buying?!)
Eduardo Cortez They did include the pen for the Surface Pro 4, but Microsoft realized only 20% of Surface users actually use the pen, so instead of forcing people to buy a surface and forced to pay extra for a pen, they decided to sell it separately. Same with the keyboard. People would complain that they're forced to buy a certain keyboard. What if you had a Surface pro 3 but want a pro 4 keyboard? You wouldn't be able to unless they sold it separately like they do now.
@Ryan Cavitt There are many USB-C cables not capable of charging. When user don't realize this, who would he blame: cable or Surface? Definitely not cable :) USB-C is the one who should mature first, before it will be included into Surface.
Vitaliy K, actually they will as cheaper cables most likely will invoke a warning that it's not a good cable. USB-C is capable of this and if MS doesn't implement it that's their screw up.
7 лет назад+2
Vitaliy K. or the power supply at the end of the cable. Type-C needs to mature a lot before it can spread.
You can't complain about not having USB-C being dated and then say that not having regular SD, but rather microSD, also being dated. Almost any SD card that you buy is a microSD card with a regular SD card adapter, having a regular SD port sounds more dated since that form factor is much older. MicroSD comes in sizes up-to 256GB (that's the highest I could find) and I couldn't find any regular SD cards that had higher capacity.
Agreed. I've handled every generation of Surface Pro and it was just about the third gen they started to get it right. The fourth one still seems like it hasn't quite gotten the final iteration of changes incorporated but man... Considering where they started it really has come along way.
The problem is that USB-C is such a better, faster, and simpler standard that new devices should be looking to phase out USB-A entirely so we can all have fast and simple connections.
It doesn't matter if you don't actually own USB-C devices to use with it. When it becomes the norm in a few years time, there's also going to be 2-3 more iterations of this device by then. I'd rather have a USB-A port that I can use now, than a USB-C port that I can only use in 2-3 years time.
Samuel Ng Uhhh with these CPUs, they could easily last 5 years. My mom still uses a 4 year old laptop that costed $300 and it does everything moderately well.
I have an Acer Switch 12 at home and a Surface at work. I love the pen on the Surface, but I'd never buy it after having USB-C. For $35, I have a USB-C dock which I can easily plug in a monitor, mouse, Ethernet, keyboard, etc. I can use the same $35 dock with my phone. At work, $250 dock needed for the surface and no way we keep multiples around. I can also power the device through USB-C with a battery pack. No non-plug option with the Surface. USB-C is simply more flexible.
Navaneeth Sendhil what are you talking about? As far as I'm concerned Razer never made a hybrid laptop and Tim Cook even said that he doesn't believe touch screens belong on laptops
i can't believe they are still using this design : dissipating heat on plates that are in contact with the back of the chassis, but also in contact with the huge pack of batteries, sp4 and sp3 had a lot of problems with cells exploding and battery swelling to the point of getting screen flickering, bulging and distached screen from the chassis...
As a surface 3 user (super base model) in daily life, I was impressed enough with it as a portable media and homework machine to supplement my desktop that I wound up buying the I5/4GB/128gb (the jump to the 8gb/256 was just not in the cards, though I'm not unhappy at all with this model in any way) new surface pro. The quirks that mattered to me were the goofy micro usb charger on the 3 being really sensitive and sometimes not recognizing itself and I wanted a little more speed for games (I was happy playing diablo 2, FTL, and other old games) but the new pro 5 actually can play most older games. It obviously isn't going to do a ton, but low settings, skyrim runs at 45-60fps. That's amazing. I was so happy with it, I sold my massive Lenovo Y510P with SLI 755m's because of the insane utility of this thing. We use it in bed for watching movies, the form factor is so small in my very space-confined backpack, and it's easy to prop up in my ambulance for watching media while I'm on duty (something no laptop can do) I also never run into throttling issues with powerpoint or basic photoshop. I'm NOT a power user on this device, but that's what the more expensive model is for. as an everyday portable device that games a bit (new powerful stuff at home, portable stuff like FTL, hearthstone, some skyrim on the go) and uses it a lot as a media device while doing homework, I'm just blown away by the device for under $900.
The lack of USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 is a total deal breaker. It's 2017 fgs!! What is Microsoft thinking?! O_O. Also, the pen and keyboard being sold separately is just plain ridiculous at this point.
could someone explain why USB-C or thunderbolt is so important? USB-C on a phone side is a different story and devices like those which have it, don't need a laptop to have USB-C since they'll still use USB A to charge from etc. and also things like flash drives and hardrives also use USB A. I have the surface pro 3 which is compatible with everything I have, so what would those ports be needed for?
Yeah, that's what I was going to ask. What the hell is wrong with sporting the tried-and-true USB standard port? It's backward compatible with previous versions of, and has no issues at all. I don't have to go buy cables with those rounded ends. I think the whole USB-C push is just change for its own sake. Thunderbolt--fine. That's a whole 'nother kettle of fish. Just leave USB compatible and alone on PCs. The Surface and PCs in general are not frigging phones.
For me the lack of pen is the deal breaker. Why would they choose to not include the pen this time? I guess greed? I feel if the pen isn't there, the keyboard should be at the very least. Not to mention the keyboard's price is also higher now too.
Hi Luke, I hope you had a nice time in Shanghai. Sorry for our rainy weather this week. Hope someone pointed you to cool places to visit in this vibrant city.
How can Microsoft still not include the keyboard at least, this is not an iPad. They call it a laptop now as well lol. Microsoft is doing such odd things now, they even made a normal laptop under the Surface Brand, when all along the Surface brand was to be touchscreen tablets. Then now they don't even have one USB C/ Thunderbolt, this Surface Pro is a big miss for them, I also know tons of people that bought the early Surface Pro's and now just switched to a normal laptop, these things I don't think have a good replacement cycle.
With regards to the IO, I think that in some ways, it still makes sense to stick to USB Type A. I still can't find a USB memory stick in stores that uses Type-C. So for most consumers who simply want some way to connect their existing peripherals to the Surface Pro, Type-A still makes sense.
Yoiu need to differentiate which reversion of USB 3.1 you want. USB 3.1 Gen 1 has the same bandwidth as USB 3.0, and a bit more wiggle room on alternative USB charging modes. USB 3.1 Gen 2 is what has the extra bandwidth, it's not actually usable for any flashdrive or external HDD, and external SSDs won't see much difference (they're also highly likely to be running slower than USB 3.0 when you run a SATA III to USB adapter, as nearly all external SSDs do).
For performance, some laptop and tablet makers will intentionally set a lower power limit in the BIOS, in order to target a specific battery life range.
For its form factor and capabilities, it's not really that expensive, especially when you consider that 13" HD touch pen displays are still going from between $800 to $1000 when they have screens, pens, and digitizers of similar quality.
Panay already said the reason they didn't include USB-C was because most people would use it for charging only which is a moot reason to go the extra mile to include it. And then there's also the risk of people going into Holydays with the wrong ( underpowered ) USB-C charger from another device and then suddenly realizing why their Surface isn't charging properly. So in order to prevent such issues they decided to stick with the proprietary design they still use as of now as it would guarantee that you'd have to bring the right charger with you.
so basically the compromise of having a longer battery life is not having the pen. a lot of people dont use the pen anyway. I'm on a SP4 and I probably use it maybe once a week. I've never felt like the battery life is lacking in SP4 though. I always run on battery saver mode.
Boy that sucks... I wanted to buy one for college, but I was quite sure there would be thunderbolt for some extra functionality. And the Keyboard and Pen would run me an extra like $200? F*ck you Microsoft. Again
bas van der werff Yeah, I agree mate. I don't get why everyone's so into thunderbolt... what the hell are you using it for? Ok, fine... you can run a display and charge with the same port... but is that really so fantastic?
Thunderbolt is excellent for connecting docks. Set your dock up with a monitor (or 2) keyboard, mouse, wired LAN, etc and only have to connect that one cable. Its really quite nice to have. Then just unplug and take the tablet or laptop with you.

sparkplug1018 or you can use the surface dock for that, and have even more possibilities. Oh, and it's magnetic
I am actually a little okay with them not bundling it. The reason they give is that people should be able to customize it to their use case, they can make the actual hardware cheaper by not bundling it, and if people decide they need the pen, or the mouse, or the keyboard (remember it's also a tablet) or the stylus they can get those after. It does tend to make everything slightly higher quality. Plus, backwards comparability means a lot of the pro 3 upgrades won't need some of that stuff.
I'm one month away from running out of warranty. Woke up from a nap, Surface Pro gained a 2,5 cm wide area on the right hand side that won't respond to touch. I tried every fix under the sun the Microsoft Support threw at me during our multiple calls, including a complete system recovery. Nothing has worked. I've begged them to help me get a replacement for the past three calls. They keep saying 'one last step' to try... The last system recovery left me with none of my files and the 2,5 cm wide dead zone still there. Wonder what last step they might have for me before warranty runs out.
I am not sure how it "feels weird," that a company lazily refreshed a product with as little effort as possible to keep costs down and maximize profit. This *is* Microsoft we're talking about, after all. Bless their hearts.
Pen is backwards or forwards compatible as long as It is not the Pro 1 or 2. The first two generations used Wacom technology and is incompatible with any other setup.
I've been waiting for the Surface Pro 5, or "Pro" now, to replace my Macbook Pro for months. The Surface Laptop looked like a great replacement, until I annoyingly discovered it had no USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 (the prototypes had TWO USB-C ports). Once again, I find myself annoyed and making the same statement about the Surface Pro - an excellent device with a huge disappointment (there's a headline). The lack of USB-C on almost any device in 2017 is ridiculous, and in the case of phones, tablets, 2in1s and laptops, has become unjustifiable. The 'new' Surface Pro is no exception, especially during the middle of the tech industry's transition to USB-C. The new 2017 HP Spectre X2, a Surface Pro 4 inspired 2in1, has TWO USB-C 3.1 ports (Gen-1 though, but still). Mind you, the X2s battery life doesn't come close to the Surface Pro.
I suspect they've painted themselves into a corner regarding IO because of the Skype Room System dock. Changing the IO immediately forces a revision of the dock (which itself is only a few months old) and there wasn't room to also add USBC or Thunderbolt without moving the other ports.
lol Microsoft is moving backwards... SP4 included the pen and keyboard sold separately.... Now New Surface Pro the pen and keyboard are sold separately... Next year the Pen, Keybord and Battery will be sold separately lol. Also Microsoft need more ports, louder speakers, include (Pen and Keyboard), custom pen buttons and tilt function for the pen.
Did you watch the video? First: why would they include pens and keyboards, what if you don't want them or for example have a Pro 4 or Pro 3 type cover and you don't want to buy a new one? Same for the pen but including who doesn't want it at all. If you actually informed yourself you would've known that they added better speakers, the pen now has 4096 pressure levels and it supports tilt, plus it's the pen with the least latency on the market now.
Vincentmrl First off: your first sentence is idiotic because the pen actually came with previous surface pros.... That shows that you do not own a Surface otherwise you would know that. It's funny how you don't talk about the lack of ports, battery life accuracy, or the cost of surface pro type cover/accessories because you don't own a surface otherwise you would be saying the same thing. So the new Surface Pro has better speakers... What do you mean by better? is it louder? ... where in the video does he talk about the speaker? I only said tilt because I own a surface and was looking at all the things I needed to better my SP4. I'm not sure why you don't mention the other things I said because you don't own a SP. Also yes you need a type cover because window/program tablet mode is not optimize like Ipads... When I get the new Surface I'll sell you my Pro 4 without the keyboard and pen for a cheap price that you can afford :)
Uh? Excuse me but I have a Surface 3 WITH a type cover and WITH a Pro 4 pen. They shaved the price down by not including the pen as their global research shows that less than 20% of the people use it (while others just sell it on ebay). I never had problems with the ports amount and Microsoft hinted at a type c surface dock like device so that's all covered. The battery life is honestly accurate because Microsoft always states that the test is done with video playback, the battery life changes depending on your use, it's impossible to do an estimate when there's such a big usage variety. I don't know exactly what microsoft means by better speakers but apparently they're better than the Pro4's. The new pen supports tilt and has the 4096 pressure levels PLUS I just learned today that all these features will be available on all the Surfaces from the 3/Pro 3 to the new Pro (yes that includes having all the 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity and tilt) which is great. I used my S3 without the type cover and with just the pen for over a year and I didn't have any problems with it. I know having the type cover is years better though (and when I needed a keyboard I bought it).
There are different colors. A bundle would force everyone to take a certain color and force others to use the pen for those who don't want it. Which is apparently like 70-80%
they could gather so many more customers if they just added the Keyboard with the base package, maybe not the pen, but you know... also USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 pls...
I have a laptop....without USB 3.0, Thunderbolt 1, 2, 3, USB type C port... only thing I got is USB 2.0, DVD drive, VGA port, a Gigabit Ethernet, and firewire. I feel small... but it's ok, it still working and I'm satisfy using it for another 4 years.
I love my surface pro 4, and was really disappointed and shocked it didn't have the usb 3.1/thunderbolt. But holy balls Microsoft! What are you thinking not putting it on/in the "new" surface??? Are you kidding me?? So pretty much your getting the exact same surface without the pen, without the keyboard. That's what this is too me. Yes the pen is better (100 dollars) and the keyboard... well.. the exact same....... (150 dollars) It's so mind boggling they leave out updated ports and not include the pen. Blows my mind and really makes me not want the "new version" In my opinion they really fucked this one up. But that's just my opinion.
Oh.. No no man. I was just shocked that they didn't put it on there. I knew it didn't have it when buying it. And again, I really.... really like my surface pro 4. It's a great device. I just think Microsoft should at leased put this port on there along with full sized 3.0 port. Now, I'm not sure about how difficult that would be or if it would be even possible. But would sure be a plus and send this device over the edge of greatness! That's all.
7 лет назад
Tylar M. but if you want to upgrade, you can use your existing pen and keyboard. Also USB-C is confusing and it needs to mature.
True. I just think They could probably put it on there along with usb 3.0 full sized port. Just because I think they could doesn't mean it's possible. I get that. But adding 4G card, and not usb 3.1 thunderbolt? Sounds like they should be able to do this. I feel it's pretty much the same thing with very minor upgrades. Usb-C does need to mature for sure, and adding this port doesn't change that much.... But I feel it should def. be on the "new" Surface Pro. All the things you can do with just 1 USB type C and all the products coming out with that port. Makes sense too me, ya know.
USB C is optional as a dongle. Not the dock, a dongle to change the Surface Connector into a USB C port, even for charging. Seems pretty damn modern for a port to adapt with that kind of forward thinking.
I do. The fuckers at lenovo decided to put it on the latest thinkpad instead of a proper displayport and now i need to buy a $50 dongle to use my ultrawide 1440p monitor at more than 30hz.
Real world... I do. I have an Acer Switch 12 at home and a Surface 4 at work. USB-C is so much simpler. The Surface needs a $250 dock for monitor, keyboard, mouse, and Ethernet. My Acer can just use a $35 USB-C to HDMI hub. I can also power my Acer via USB-C from a battery -- Surface can't. I can also use the same USB-C hub for my phone. USB-C is so much more convenient.
They made it so expensive like, An i7 15inch Macbook with 16gig ram will come for €2700 (kaby lake will probably be same price announced at WWDC) While the Surface will come at €2500 + 110 (pen) + 180 (keyboard) for same config

If some here is a fanboy then it's usually the ignorant one who doesn't know what they are talking about. I'm all for competition in the field and running Intel and Nvidia at the time.
Your Predicting Performance and predicting microsoft cares about gaming performance on a tablet that was originally intended for drawers, Not PC Gamers. Any APU for the surface line would not seem like a wise decision for microsoft in my opinion. Hell, I'd argue they work with intel more than AMD in terms of drivers and such.
It's not about gaming performance but about raw number crunching power. It's intended for creative work and the power is definitely useful for that. Even Linus talked about how excited he is to finally see possibly 8c/16t on laptops.
Love that a full processor is fanless. But I don't trust their battery life, the pro 4's was shocking. And a finger print scanner should be the standard at that price
Thunderbolt 3 would mean paying royalties to Intel, and its expensive. And TB3 consumes power when being used. Several PC manufactures have reported this fact. That's why.
i don't think thunderbolt or usb c are going to become consistently available on mainstream devices until they start selling drives with those connectors in retail stores.
No, you can still choose the colors even if it's not sold seperatly. It is because the surface pro 4 and older version's keyboard and pan are compatible with the newsurface pro incase you have the old surface pro versions but want to upgrade to new surface pro.
this this is interesting... maybe replacing the display port for a USB c would be cool (allowing charging and video out) but a full size usb 3 is great for the majority of devices on the market that still depend on a full usb for connecting without dongles...
HAMMERonRUclips Exactly! Except for the fact that there are actually useful ports... and a kickstand... and a fully functional OS and processor... oh damn, I guess it's actually nothing like apple's tablet!
Not everyone wants keyboard and pen with the new Surface Pro, because many people want to upgrade from the previous version already have keyboard and a pen
Thomas you idiot. He's using it as an example of issues that products have when they launch. No one is immune to at least some kind of issue, not Apple and not Microsoft. There was no product comparison with SP4 vs iPad 1st gen. Why is RUclips so damn full of ignorant trollers
In addition to USB-C and Thunderbolt, there's no NFC so the Surface Pro can also be used as a lite mPOS (e.g. accepting payments from smart cards like #CompassCard and #八達通), for more convenient and secure online payments (instead of entering card number manually, just tap), online inquiries of transponder (e.g. #CompassCard stored value and passes inquiry, #八達通 inquiry), and more.
I would like to think that they didn't include the keyboard and pen to push the cost down a bit for people upgrading from a previous surface device. But I'm also not seeing any surface+keyboard+pen bundles on the site, which seems like an absolute no-brainer.
they sure managed to mess up the line, when they reach were i live mentioning "surface pro" will mean nothing to the seller. that is exactly the kind of notebook that i need for engineering class ( i have a cube i7) but the lack of usb -c is a deal breaker. i use the pen to substitute paper because i keep losing very important papers that i spent 1+ hours making.
One minor detail you missed Luke was that the last gen Surface Pen had pressure levels of 2048 (the one that came with the Surface Pro 4), other than that everything was on point. 😎
I would have wanted to hear more about drawing with it, how programs such krita, sai or photoshop works on it. And more detailed pen pressure and stroke precision testing rather than specs.

Panos Panay, the guy mostly responsible for this devices, tried to explain why no modern I/O. Would be nice to hear about what you guys think about it.
As a pro 4 user, I just want to know the PMW backlight problem was solved or not... And a good news for me, the new keyboard cover, is identical to the signature type cover I owned, and the new pen are fully compatible, even the new tilt functions (I would exactly pay for it), oh yeah I have a new surface pro! so...that's perfect time to buy a surface pro 4, new CPU and graphic card on a tablet? you won't care that, core i5 6300u are good enough.
I think that not including the pen is fine. It's a novelty item for most people, and this allows Microsoft to make the best pen possible for artists and notetakers who actually use the pen.
I want something that can replace notebooks. I want to be able to take notes with a pen, I want to be able to use it like a laptop, I want it to be the only thing I need to carry for class. What should I buy?
whatby101 dell xps 15 is good, surface pros are good but not good in the lap. The surface laptop is if you just want something that you can turn on and it works and has good battery life. If you want something a bit more powerful (and costly) the surface book is good for light gaming graphic design and would meet the not taking criteria... what I would do is go to a Best Buy and try the stuff out see what you like and where you might have trouble. Also look up reviews from people who might use it in a certain way to see what they think. Good luck.
Sounds like they improved the pen input dramatically. I hope that's the case, cause after trying the Apple pencil I couldn't go back, writing and note taking feels way more natural on the iPad
I think that 90% of computer users don't even know what thunderbolt is, and most people don't use it, so why add the extra thickness for a thunderbolt port?

I would understand to not include the keyboard (though still silly when they heavily trying to market it as a laptop replacement), but not having a pen included for free makes it just another tablet that don't have one out-of-the-box.
IMO, tablet should have at least a pen these days. Tablet form-factor are just really suited for it, not just for consumption especially large tablets such as Surface Pro. These large tablets are not that ideal for casual everyday consumption, even iPad Pro which is thinner and lighter is still bulky just for that. Large tablets are really meant for productivity.
The KB has never been included, it's strange though about the pen, that's for sure.
No it isn't you just expected it to be included because it was on the old models.
The only thing that kills this for me is the lack of at least 2 USB-C ports (and by extension USB-C rapid charging). The inclusion of LTE is nice.
Vitaliy K. or the power supply at the end of the cable.
Type-C needs to mature a lot before it can spread.
"It kinda feels like a game that really needs its DLC to be fully featured or fully complete."
Oh, so it's an EA game.
What's the point of selling the keyboard and pen separately?
EmHo getting money, duh.
mugen why not just include it and make it cost more?
If they sold it as a bundle it would have to cost less because for some reason that's how bundles work in market.
Or why not give people the option to buy what they want instead of forcing it on people.
Stevo Philo what is the point of buying the surface pro if you don't buy the keyboard and pen
Where is the new surface pro? i couldn't see it
Surface Pro Vista
That would be amazing!!!

Hot Leak: next model is called the Microsoft Surface Pro-est
You can't complain about not having USB-C being dated and then say that not having regular SD, but rather microSD, also being dated.
Almost any SD card that you buy is a microSD card with a regular SD card adapter, having a regular SD port sounds more dated since that form factor is much older.
MicroSD comes in sizes up-to 256GB (that's the highest I could find) and I couldn't find any regular SD cards that had higher capacity.
Full size SD cards are standard in video cameras. It's very important for some fields of work.
Really? I had no idea.
Then I guess full size SD card readers make more sense.
I haven't used a stand-alone camera for years :p
Agreed. I've handled every generation of Surface Pro and it was just about the third gen they started to get it right. The fourth one still seems like it hasn't quite gotten the final iteration of changes incorporated but man... Considering where they started it really has come along way.
tbh i dont use USB-C so i actually do not bother the lack of it.
But you will be soon...... USB-C is the future....
Well done. You made the advertising sections with the high pitched voice guy, longer than your review! Great work
Why does everyone want to be like Razer and Apple? I mean can't someone have any sense of how to name a product?
Surface is Best Then An Apple I think you got it !
wat
Navaneeth Sendhil what are you talking about? As far as I'm concerned Razer never made a hybrid laptop and Tim Cook even said that he doesn't believe touch screens belong on laptops
He's talking about the naming. The New Razer Blade. The New MacBook Pro. The New Surface Pro. Everyone's ditching the numbers.
Navaneeth Sendhil Who on earth wants to be like Razer?
i can't believe they are still using this design : dissipating heat on plates that are in contact with the back of the chassis, but also in contact with the huge pack of batteries, sp4 and sp3 had a lot of problems with cells exploding and battery swelling to the point of getting screen flickering, bulging and distached screen from the chassis...
We use it in bed for watching movies, the form factor is so small in my very space-confined backpack, and it's easy to prop up in my ambulance for watching media while I'm on duty (something no laptop can do)
I also never run into throttling issues with powerpoint or basic photoshop.

Lets be honest though how many accessories are there that need tb3? Other than a external GPU there isnt much.
For me the lack of pen is the deal breaker. Why would they choose to not include the pen this time? I guess greed? I feel if the pen isn't there, the keyboard should be at the very least. Not to mention the keyboard's price is also higher now too.
diskiller remember when everyone bashed apple for usbC? Well... Now what? It's the opposite. Bashing people for not having usb c
I love watching the stuff Luke does on here.
Dude, I have a pen with ZERO milliseconds of latency.
I call it, "a pen"
nice
I don't know if I/O was overlooked, no one uses USB C or thunderbolt
The extra battery life was nice. .. but, FANLESS ???
SOLD !
With regards to the IO, I think that in some ways, it still makes sense to stick to USB Type A.
I still can't find a USB memory stick in stores that uses Type-C. So for most consumers who simply want some way to connect their existing peripherals to the Surface Pro, Type-A still makes sense.
The IO would be acceptable if the USB A would be a USB 3.1. Thar would be absolute minimum when it comes to the IO.
It's the same thing. Just that calling it 3.0 makes it clear that it is the "old" stuff, not the 3.1 gen 2
://ReaperReaper Of course I mean Gen2. Why would they implement Gen1? I thought we had left Gen1.
Gen 1 is still going strong. Implementing Gen 2 on portable devices, right now, is a waste of time and money.
://ReaperReaper how so if people are implementing USB type c ports? 3.1 gen 2 and type C have same bandwidth
For performance, some laptop and tablet makers will intentionally set a lower power limit in the BIOS, in order to target a specific battery life range.
I hate it when people make fun of Microsoft's counting skills. How could they not know that the reason they made no Windows 9 is because 7 8 9.
Milton Free To Choose iPhone did the same, 8 and 10
Got this as a free upgrade for my Surface Pro 4 that had one pixel that could only change darker colours. I'm super happy.

Microsoft is trying so hard to be Apple.
Just like Apple 😏.
manish chandra besides the fact it still has a head phone jack ;) very true
Form factor. Very very small
Psycho He's saying that Apple make their products overly expensive dude chill
For its form factor and capabilities, it's not really that expensive, especially when you consider that 13" HD touch pen displays are still going from between $800 to $1000 when they have screens, pens, and digitizers of similar quality.
Panay already said the reason they didn't include USB-C was because most people would use it for charging only which is a moot reason to go the extra mile to include it.
And then there's also the risk of people going into Holydays with the wrong ( underpowered ) USB-C charger from another device and then suddenly realizing why their Surface isn't charging properly.
So in order to prevent such issues they decided to stick with the proprietary design they still use as of now as it would guarantee that you'd have to bring the right charger with you.
it also gives them a chance to sell more $200 docks to customers....
Durahl seems like they could write software to tell you how fast your device is charging... they are the OS maker after all.
Cmon where's the Gigabyte aero 15 review!!!!
Nicholas Del Rossi y
Nicholas Del Rossi they did it an year ago. and also check Dave2D, he does a lot of laptop reviews.
Harsh Vardhan you might want to have your eyes examed
aero 15 has a lot of problems right now so it will probably be skipped
Harsh Vardhan They did the 14 inch review not the 15 and so far I've heard that it's a really good laptop.
so basically the compromise of having a longer battery life is not having the pen. a lot of people dont use the pen anyway.
Again
why the f whouyld you need thunderbolt for college?
Buy a lenovo ;D
bas van der werff Yeah, I agree mate.
Plus, backwards comparability means a lot of the pro 3 upgrades won't need some of that stuff.
thunderbolt ain't gonna happen because it is apples technology. and do we really need USB C?
Hey Luke. Happy to see you in another video.

Nice man!
What I noticed over the years about technology is that the best device has not come. Therefore "the best" is any device you have right now.
I seriously thought it was "what did Minecraft change"
their marketing strategy
I'm one month away from running out of warranty. Woke up from a nap, Surface Pro gained a 2,5 cm wide area on the right hand side that won't respond to touch.
I tried every fix under the sun the Microsoft Support threw at me during our multiple calls, including a complete system recovery. Nothing has worked. I've begged them to help me get a replacement for the past three calls. They keep saying 'one last step' to try...
The last system recovery left me with none of my files and the 2,5 cm wide dead zone still there.
Wonder what last step they might have for me before warranty runs out.
Nah I disagree. I don't want a separate dongle for my flash drives and the magnetic connector is better (ahem apple)
I am not sure how it "feels weird," that a company lazily refreshed a product with as little effort as possible to keep costs down and maximize profit. This *is* Microsoft we're talking about, after all. Bless their hearts.
some comments so funny
i can't help laughing.
hahahahahaha...Right!!
In Windows 10 there is an option to set custom pen buttons.
Which is apparently like 70-80%
"Shutup I'm onto you" hahaha love the humor they bring into ltt
they could gather so many more customers if they just added the Keyboard with the base package, maybe not the pen, but you know... also USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 pls...
But that's just my opinion.
why were you shocked your surface 4 didnt have those port? do you blindly buy stuf without looking at the specs?
Oh.. That's all.
Tylar M. but if you want to upgrade, you can use your existing pen and keyboard.
Seems pretty damn modern for a port to adapt with that kind of forward thinking.
in the real world no one gives a shit about USB C at the moment
I do. The fuckers at lenovo decided to put it on the latest thinkpad instead of a proper displayport and now i need to buy a $50 dongle to use my ultrawide 1440p monitor at
more than 30hz.
In the real world no one gives a shit about USB at the moment!" -2004
They made it so expensive like,
An i7 15inch Macbook with 16gig ram will come for €2700 (kaby lake will probably be same price announced at WWDC)
While the Surface will come at €2500 + 110 (pen) + 180 (keyboard) for same config
Obligatory "why no AMD Ryzen?!" comment.
Jokes aside the Ryzen APUs will be perfect for these kind of things. Wouldn't be surprised if the next model has at least one as an option.
Uh, There is no thing as a Ryzen APU.... (Fanboyism Anyone?)
There aren't yet, note the future tense. ir.amd.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=74093&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=2229447 They are coming.
Displayport? Are they kidding? Wtf. REPLACE IT WITH TB3!!!
Thunderbolt 3 would mean paying royalties to Intel, and its expensive. And TB3 consumes power when being used. Several PC manufactures have reported this fact. That's why.
i don't think thunderbolt or usb c are going to become consistently available on mainstream devices until they start selling drives with those connectors in retail stores.
they updated my RUclips app and now everything is white, I thought RUclips is about red, now it looks like shit

if the laptop were used for college mostly, do you recommend to purchase the surface pro 4, or this new surface pro 5?
Holy shit people.. the point of it not including the pen or keyboard is so you can choose what color you want them in.
No, you can still choose the colors even if it's not sold seperatly. It is because the surface pro 4 and older version's keyboard and pan are compatible with the newsurface pro incase you have the old surface pro versions but want to upgrade to new surface pro.
got one of these for work, we got all of the extras with them, and I have to admit, with everything included, they are great to work on
Yea, No Thanks.

who else likes luke more than linus
Evan Beissert I prefer watching Linus more but I'd fuck Luke in a heartbeat. Mmmmm yeah
Smockie Ditto...
he is getting better and better ...
this this is interesting... maybe replacing the display port for a USB c would be cool (allowing charging and video out) but a full size usb 3 is great for the majority of devices on the market that still depend on a full usb for connecting without dongles...
sadly the surface pros are following along with apple
HAMMERonRUclips Exactly! Except for the fact that there are actually useful ports... and a kickstand... and a fully functional OS and processor... oh damn, I guess it's actually nothing like apple's tablet!
that is a good thing. now we have a luxury laptop with a usable OS
OneManShow "fully functional os", i assume this was before surface laptop.😂
IsoMacintosh you can upgrade it to 10 pro for free...
I am Apple Fan, and I can tell you surface pros are not following along with apple, they are much ahead in this space.
Not everyone wants keyboard and pen with the new Surface Pro, because many people want to upgrade from the previous version already have keyboard and a pen
That moment when Apple tablets are a great value
Thomas Lukins the snes has a more robust library hands down
Thomas you idiot. He's using it as an example of issues that products have when they launch. No one is immune to at least some kind of issue, not Apple and not Microsoft. There was no product comparison with SP4 vs iPad 1st gen.
Why is RUclips so damn full of ignorant trollers
$1000 ipad pro so you can play Apps , LOL great value
Thomas Lukins I understand where you are coming from but imo the only reason I will be getting a new iPad is because they last forever.
DCYOUKNIGHTED ...is never going to come
In addition to USB-C and Thunderbolt, there's no NFC so the Surface Pro can also be used as a lite mPOS (e.g. accepting payments from smart cards like #CompassCard and #八達通), for more convenient and secure online payments (instead of entering card number manually, just tap), online inquiries of transponder (e.g. #CompassCard stored value and passes inquiry, #八達通 inquiry), and more.
I would like to think that they didn't include the keyboard and pen to push the cost down a bit for people upgrading from a previous surface device. But I'm also not seeing any surface+keyboard+pen bundles on the site, which seems like an absolute no-brainer.
if they give it a thunderbolt 3, you can basically add an external graphic card so that u can play games with this compute
Take a shot every time Luke says 'Surface Pro'
they sure managed to mess up the line, when they reach were i live mentioning "surface pro" will mean nothing to the seller. that is exactly the kind of notebook that i need for engineering class ( i have a cube i7) but the lack of usb -c is a deal breaker. i use the pen to substitute paper because i keep losing very important papers that i spent 1+ hours making.
So glad this came out so that the price of the surface pro 4 will drop hopefully, second hand or used
One minor detail you missed Luke was that the last gen Surface Pen had pressure levels of 2048 (the one that came with the Surface Pro 4), other than that everything was on point. 😎
I watched the New Surface Pro ad last night after watching Linus's review of Surface Pro 4, before that watching Scrapyard Wars S5 Episode 1
i love how even razer no longer uses dumb naming schemes based on 'new' because of how confusing it was
I would have wanted to hear more about drawing with it, how programs such krita, sai or photoshop works on it.
Love my Surface Pro 4! Use it for mild video production on the go. Runs RED 4K footage decent to haha.
Worth upgrading to sp5?
I think that not including the pen is fine. It's a novelty item for most people, and this allows Microsoft to make the best pen possible for artists and notetakers who actually use the pen.
I'm loving the serious/not so serious thumbnails 😎
You guys don't understand that it LITERALLY is a Surface Pro 5. They just want you to buy the SP5 sticker along with everything else sold separately.
