  • As the world shifts from traditional media to social media, camera companies have been rushing to release new cameras and lenses every quarter. With each newly released camera there are more features, more megapixels…(montage of clips from people talking about cameras “better”) but there is one camera that stands in the face of all of that. One camera that has kept its same design, same size, and same feature set since the first one was released in 2011…and that camera is the X100V.
But why has this camera not changed? What is it about it that draws an almost cult like following? And what were some of the values that were kept in mind when they were engineering this camera? In this episode, we try to answer this question.

How refreshing! I preach very similar life lessons but was so pleased to see someone sharing similar ideas but built into a camera review because there is a lifestyle/philosophy element combined with the X100V design ethic/aesthetic. If minimalist Joshua Becker did a camera review I think it would go something like this!!
      Liked and subscribed, gimme more…

My DSLR has been sitting in my bag for several years. I got lots of use out of it when the kids were small. Now I am thinking of selling it and buying the Fujifilm X100V classic aluminum body. I am very indecisive so having so many choices of photo gear options leads me to make no decisions at all. In other words, my camera has sat in my closet. I love the idea of having a camera that you can take anywhere. No excuses for not having it with you. My first camera was a black body Nikkormat FT3 that I bought in 1977. Built like a tank. The X100V reminds me of old Leica cameras but without the Ferrari pricing. Big daddy is going to buy a X100V.

Capturing the moments in time through a 35mm lens is the most pleasing and natural ways of photography expression. Once you master the skill with only one focal length, everything after becomes a second nature. Great review...I truly enjoyed the video.

i was just looking for info about my new x100v after selling all my nikon gear. The minimalism of the camera reflects exatly the way i wanna live my life. simpel but intense. by the way, i love this camera and the way it is put together by Fujifilm. what i have and what i can do with it makes me happy. that is all that counts. greetz from belgium, Erwin.

Can't agree more Ahmed! When my friend Richard starts to complain about his expensive DSLR lens growing moulds or fungus, I reckon he should have chosen a top-end compact camera with fixed but versatile lens 5 years ago. Absolutely happy with the silent shutter(like a Ninjia warrior) for dedicated street photography. Owning 100V makes me want to become a minimalist with a clear mindset. This little camera simply renders happiness.

i have to say...as someone who has accumulated so much STUFF over this creative journey and someone who is currently in the process of letting go of the STUFF thats tying me down. this video was really felt and needed . although i'm definitely purchasing this camera (as my basement filled with camera and video gear are sold off) i definitely feel taking a step back and relying on one camera, one lens and its simplicity will definitely help re spark this love i have for photography. so thank you for this wonderful video.

My friend Assalamualikum and thank you so much for your expression towards x100v. I was a bit confused to buy the next camera which could be x100v or xt4 or xpro3 and to be honest for long since I was dreaming to go for a x100 series. Now, after watching your video I confidently go for the x100v. Thank you once again for helping me to go for the next choice.

You absolutely nailed it. I sold my canon equipment a few years ago to switch to the pen f with two lenses (no zoom, fix mm) in order to have it with me and to reduce and declutter my options due to photography. But even this was to much "noise" so I change to the 100v to mute this noise even more with a camera as beauty as the pen but yet more powerfull. Now I found this vid and you simply sum up my intentions of the past years. Great.

A very refreshingly different review! I still have my original X100, and I hope to keep it even after it stops working, as it’s been such a big influence on me, and changed the way I approach photography. Not that I really regret it, but I ended up buying into the Fuji system, and now I have what feels like too many lenses, so I’m starting to feel the pull of the simpler life again, of selling a bunch of my lenses and getting either the X100V or the Ricoh GR3.

Very well said. Thanks! The „not having to choose a lens“ really did it for me. Some year ago, I got myself an XT-20 and 2-3 lenses as a „light kit“. But I got myself stuck in GAS land again, collecting Fuji lenses instead of Nikon. Sold it again. Then the x100v came out with decent AF. Sold most of my Nikon gear, and got it. Have been having a blast. Honestly.
I just take „the camera“ and leave. No bags, no carrying solution, not peak design straps etc. Just throw the camera in whatever bag I was going to take anyway and be on my way. Truly liberating. That said, I did not surrender my entire DSLR gear. Still one body, two lenses, a flash around. But I use them only deliberately now when I need to do a very specific thing. 90% Fuji I‘d say.

The original X100 was what got me back into photography. I sold it to fund a used DSLR/kit lens, which allowed me to start my own business. As soon as I started making money...I bought an X100S and TCL. Neither the original X100 or S are what one would call 'fast', but there's just something about using an X100 series camera. They are also FAR more capable than many realize thanks to the built in ND filter and leaf shutter.
After the shutter in my X100S died, I had a choice between the recently releases V or a 'new old stock' F. I didn't need the articulating screen, didn't want the touch screen(D-pad all day) and don't care about 4K. The F at almost 20% off its original retail price was an easy choice. Don't get me wrong, the V is a great camera but I just prefer the simplicity of the F or other previous versions(also not a fan of the XT4 compared to the 3-2-1).

Minimalism, or essentialism in combination with photography was an oxymoron. Everything I stood for; photography worked against me. I lost the love of taking pictures. To just go out and explore without having the digital lag as well as the physical lag (which camera, which lens, which subject, which setting) was practically non existent anymore. I was done. Now I’m constantly watching videos about the X100V and I notice that minimalism is a great combination with this camera. Thanks for making this video because it is one of the things that helps me to consider taking up photography again.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience, so relevant for myself I'm a beginner photographer and bought a Sony A6400 but didn't meet my expectations, as I was used to shooting film. The Fujifilm x100v really captures that essence of film in a digital world. This video really resonated with my approach to where I see myself capturing moments without the hassle of choosing what lens to use. I'm still learning but loving the x100v. Thanks you got a new sub and will be checking out your other videos.

Wow, see how much nicer it looked in 2010, though. But whatever, when you see a generic icon for a "camera", it always looks like an x100 series.
"Accumulating houses"... at 54, I haven't even managed to accumulate one apartment yet.
As for "Amazon exists, and you can get something in about a day and a half"... good luck trying to get the new Fuji 27mm pancake. The universal unavailability of that lens is actually pushing me towards an x100v.
Very, very nice video, Ahmed. Thanks.

Limitations have always been one of best way to better your craft, in whatever form you practice in. Limit your tools, the colors used, the format, the subject matter, the location, the time spent, whatever. It'll force you to discover new ways of viewing and portraying your subject. Try it, and stick to it for a while. I guarantee you'll improve as an artist if you do.

Love every thing about this. My F was stolen in 2018 and I then picked up the a7iii and a selection of lenses to be that better photograph I always thought I would be. Well over the last 12 months I’ve taken less images than any of the other 30 plus years of owning film and also digital point and shoot cameras. Soon the Sony will be sold and it’s a new V for me. It’s strange how I’ve come to want less in my life as I’ve gone into my 50s. Sold the Hi-Fi, vinyl and CD’s and simplified it with a Hi-Res streaming speaker (Its one of the best) but the clutter has gone. I only own an iPad Pro and happy to use that for the simple editing I do with images. I love owning less!

Exceptional review - not necessarily of the camera, but why it exists and how that, in itself, is so compelling.

I can't afford the X100V, but i have the black X100 original. And being happy with it. Someday, i get the X100V, i know it since the release day and also DPR Review. :)

The X 100 original is still a great camera! The problem with RUclips and camera reviews today is that we always feel like we need the absolute latest to make great images… But 10 years ago, people were still making great images with whatever they had available

@@eidfilms The Problem is, that the people always have G.A.S. - Gear Aquisation Syndrome. Always lusting for more, better, faster, WTF?!
I can tell you, i create better pictures just with my Yashica FR, ML 35/2.8 or Distagon 35/2.8 MM and a roll of TriX 400, than with any DSLR, or DSLM i have here, "Fullframe" included from Canon, Sony.
Gear doesn't matter, but your vision, does.

@@eidfilms Ansel Adams, Henri-Carter Bresson, Robert Capa, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen - to name just a few, they all created _extraordinary_ work, with just the camera, they are used to.
Gear is one thing, but craft & vision is another. And it's a false thinking, better gear (technically) would always lead into better photographs...it's wrong.

Fantastic reflections on this beautiful camera. Thank you for your philosophical insights. I love the camera as well. I just didn’t know exactly why. Your video helped to pinpoint what it is about this camera.

Perhaps more appropriate would have been the observation that the great photographer Cartier-Bresson always used the same 50mm lens.

Don't ask me why Ahmed, its a mystery to me, but as I was listening to you, Kipling's ''IF'' came to mind. I had to stop and go read it. Glad I did.
