I myself had been looking for a 100V and couldn’t justify the up-charge in price since they are difficult to come by, I instead bought a new X-pro 3 and just paired it up with the new 56mm 1.2 WR lens. You hit every point in this video. 👍🏼👍🏼
Yeah it’s so not worth it at the moment when you have such crazy good alternatives. You also can’t get that creamy 1.2 look on the x100 series either 😂
Probably, but I don’t have direct experience with the camera so I didn’t feel like I could offer any valuable comparison insight. Looks like a nice camera though!
When we say pocket camera do any cameras really belong in pockets? Even if small enough a camera probably does not belong in jeans pockets. Not a good place for a camera. Hoodie pockets? Plenty of room but things can fall out of them as well. Coat pockets sure but try that in July!
I had X-Pro2. Loved that camera. Was a little big though. Then I bought Panasonic GX80/85 used for $200. Added Sigma 16/30/56mm F1.4 primes. Best combo ever. Though I would suggest getting GX9 if you can find for a good price. I may love this camera even more than fuji. Only if it had fuji film simulations. EDIT: It has amazing IBIS and tiltable screen. 4K 24P. Shutter speeds of 1/20 is not a problem with non stabilized lenses. I just love this little camera. Couldn’t think of a better camera for this little money.
I almost got an X100V two years ago but I went for the GRIII instead. Pocketable makes all the difference for me. I always have it, and no one notices it.
Thank you for your experience and see Stanley has grown to love it too. Can’t afford a Leica at the moment. Don’t want lots of bells & whistles. I want the experience Leica’s give one (I have only read and heard about) … and seems the GR3 will offer that … while being so discrete … really appeals to me … so am about 98% ready to get one!
Uhhh I don't think anyone is looking for alternatives that cost 5-10 times more. An alternative is something that is similarly priced and performs a similar function. I don't understand how the x-e4 (or earlier models) didn't make it into your list. Terrible suggestions imo
The Olympus Pen-F with the 17mm f1.8 is the obvious alternative and was for some time the main competitor to the X100 line. Then there's the Panasonic GX line of rangefinder style cameras. Plenty more affordable killer camera deals to be had.
Got an older Lumix LX100 mk ii - nice little everyday carry with great optics - low light, not so much, but tradeoffs are worth it for price and portability. IQ overall all is great.
Hi Stanley. I agree with your choices. I myself purchased the XPro3 a couple of months ago. I fully understood the cameras build and design idea and absolutely love it. It’s my personal camera outside my day to day work cameras which are much larger and cumbersome for travel or street. I also chose the XPro3 for the fact I can change lenses. Very happy with it. Great work with this video. Your approach is transparent and not biased. It’s nice to watch videos produced with honesty and without paid bias. Merry Christmas from Australia.
Thank you for the feedback! That’s a great pick! I personally also chose the Xpro3 over the X100 a while back for similar reasons. It pairs really nicely with M mount lenses too. Happy holidays!
Great work Stanley, very informative and rather timely as my very good friend lives outside of London in the UK and we were discussing this angle but from a seller's perspective, he reckons he could offload his Black V100V at the moment given the lack of available stock and surrounding manic hype for about 1500 pounds. Then in turn, we worked out he could net himself a barely loved and used Fuji Xpro2 and one of the three compact Fujicrons. That being the f2 - 23, 35 or 50mm. I told him to sell now. The window for opportunism and profiteering will never be better. Simple. The stars for selling are now perfectly aligned. Great final point with Leica, the unique rangefinder experience aside - nothing keeps its value like a pristine Leica-M - nothing - it isn't even close with the other Big 3' - 80% resale, 1 or even 2 years down the track. Easy.
Glad you enjoyed the video! I think that's a great plan. I'm sure your friend can easily buy the X100V again at reasonable prices whenever the X100VI comes out or stock levels out. My next video will likely be about Leica M's. Stay tuned!
@@legendofthecamera Thought you might wish to know Stanley - my friend in the UK sold his X100v, hold onto your hat when you read the price. So he originally paid 1300 pounds brand new and had it for 19months taking 3000 shots. Cheekily, he Ebay listed it for 1750 pounds. Less than 24 hours later -Sold- no questions asked! Expect to see similar silliness with the maligned and misunderstood Xpro3. Since it is discontinued and sadly it seems no successor is planned, prices will head skyward.
Thanks for this video. I also was looking for a X100V but found myself a X-T30 II instead. I added a Fujinon 28mm 2.8 to the equation to get a VERY compact camera with all those beautiful Fuji JPEG goodies and the flexibility of lens exchange on top.
I am 90 seconds into your video and I feel that you have overlooked two of the most important features when purchasing an x100 camera. The first is the leaf shutter and the second is the built-in ND filter. This combination is very powerful for crushing ambient light, and it really sets the x100 camera series apart.
I think these are really great features for OCF users, but I didn’t feel that most would-be x100 owners would fall into this camp. I also felt like the alternatives I suggested didn’t fall behind in this aspect. The GR3 similarly has an ND and leaf shutter, plus IBIS. Q2 also has leaf shutter and lens OS. (The x100 doesn’t have any stabilization).
I'd opt for the small X-T20 with either the xf23 f1.4 WR or the xf18mm f1.4 WR for a street walkaround. Both great lenses and the T20 even has that on-board flash if you needed it on the fly. No leaf shutter and a little more bulk are the only downsides.
I’ve owned (and still own) several Fuji bodies & lenses. It’s likely many of the hype X100V buyers won’t use the OVF, NDF.. and will glam it up with hoods, cases, etc. I’ve seen exactly this hanging from an ultra hip dude on Montana in Santa Monica. Once you ‘glam up’ the X100 line the slim/pocketable profile is pretty much gone…about the same size as an X-T/27mm combo..and neither are fitting easily in a pocket.. maybe a big jacket pocket. For anyone wanting something close & don’t know what OVF.. NDF.. are..so many options to get those Fuji colors. 27mm + X-E2,3,4.. X-T3,4,5 .. X-Pro2,3. .. X-T20,30,30ii. The GR is badass. X100V (without glam) fits in a pocket.. but the GR disappears in a pocket. I’ve replaced my X100V with an X-T4/27mm (walk around) and GR IIIx (stealth/discrete). only negative of GR IMO is that it’s not super robust and us GR owners are all on the clock until dust is on the sensor.. nothing above f8 for me. Thank you for this video. The issue with the hype buying of the X100V is that it’s not logical for the most part so there is very little listening to reason. A positive though is how many people are discovering Fuji. Cheers!
I agree with you 💯. The whole X100V markup thing has been ridiculous for me to see, which is why I felt so compelled to make this video. There are seriously so many excellent alternatives that it’s not even funny. Thanks for watching!
My alternative to the X100V is the Fuji X-T1 with the small Fuji 23mm f2 lens . I wasn't prepared to pay those inflated prices the X100V command's at the moment,, my alternate can be had for under 1k AUD.
Absolutely valid! I was much happier with my XPro2 + XF 23/2 as an upgrade from the original X100 because I could also change lenses if I wanted. I wish people would also realize this so we don’t feed the scalpers.
It’s a shame that M43 cameras continue to be under appreciated. For amateurs and enthusiasts a GX85 and GX850 represent a better value, and the image quality (when used properly) rivals most APS-C cameras. Look closely at the Image Quality page of DPreview’s camera reviews. M43 will surprise most people who have little or no experience with it. These are all great cameras in the video, but if you’re on a tight budget, you still have other excellent choices. 🙏
@@scottfineshriber5051Sadly people believe people on you tube that say it’s rubbish and seem always wanting to upgrade to try and achieve better photos as that’s what they are told , rather than concentrating on improving their photos , I wish there was some new MFT options , I just bought a Sony a6600 cheaper than a X100V , I do question my decision but my future finances are looking like the decision was based on it could be some time before I will be able to buy another so this should last me a good while , when I look back 5 / 8 years I can’t see many quality difference when it comes to a a3 print . Oh I wanted IBS or I may have bought a cheaper model .
I love my rx1r - hard to believe you are the only one I’ve seen even mentioning it in the chat. You can easily pick up an rx1rii for roughly the same crazy prices people are paying for the x100v and the rx1rii has the viewfinder built in.
I have Ricoh GRD III. Paid something like 150 USD for it. It has f1.9 lens, so no high ISO is needed. Very liberating camera. BTW, it is false myth what nobody see you taking pictures because camera is small. It is gesture, even if you are doing hip thing, not the camera size.
The Ricoh GRII that I have is by far my favorite camera. While I would love to get one of the nice looking Fuji cameras or even a Leica, this little camera has changed photography for myself providing me with high quality images in a camera body so easy to throw in your pocket or bag that I never really second guess bringing a camera. While I would love to spend money on some of the other options I just don't have it, so my plan is to stick with the GR series and maybe go for a GRIIIx next. I just can't say enough about these little powerhouses.
I’m with you there. It’s an incredibly unique camera that has a major size advantage over the rest. I made my newest video about it. The two cameras of this list I’m currently still sticking with are the GR3 and XPRO3.
Left Fuji and apart from missing Classic Chrome zero regrets whatsoever. Lumix GX9 and PL15mm, PL 25mm and PL 12-60mm. Better build quality, value for money and great black and white SOOC jpegs + IBIS & touch to shoot screen!
Fujifilm X-E4 is very similar to the X100 in size and performance. Pick your favorite lens and go. X-e4 body only is 850 or with 27mm f2.8 it’s 1050. Beat that!
@@legendofthecamera premium build yes but the build of the X-E4 is very good but I admit it doesn’t have weather seal. OVF isn’t required anymore. The EVF is very good. In fact I never use EVF on my X-Pro2. Can’t argue the leaf shutter. I wouldn’t call the lens Super compact. I think the 27mm f2.8 is smaller. The X-E4 is 1050 with the 27mm and the V100 is 1400. That gives you enough spare change, I think, to get the 50mm f2.0. I went out and got the Sigma 30mm f1.4 for under 300. It was on sale.
Fantastic review . When I was looking for a camera a few years back that would do travel , street and portrait I procrastinated long and hard and finally settled on the Olympus EM 10 Mii. My choice will not be many peoples first or even second choice , which is why the final choice is always a compromise and a highly subjective one . I think your video proved there are other alternatives out there and it might be worth a trip to one of the big used camera stores to try out all the models on hits short list . If you can forgo the new purchase and spent the extra on a lens or better still on a trip to somewhere to trill your images then that is something else to ponder . Finally , can I encourage more of us to make photo books of our favourite images . You never know what technology will do next and having lost so many to photo sites or old computer drives , I was forced to not to just rely on making copies but to make books to tell our stories .
I had the EM5 mk2 at one point. It was a very fun camera with incredible IBIS. Pairs really well with the Panny Leica 25mm. I had it to replace my X100 mk1 back then 😂 I eventually replaced it with an XPro2 though, but missed the crazy IBIS the Olympus had. On your point about losing images, that’s definitely a reality nowadays. I might make a video about photo backup systems later on.
Thoughtful, well done look into these cameras. I went looking for a lightweight, portable over the shoulder all the time camera around the time the X-pro 1 was released. Bought one, used it for a year. Sold it as it wasn't really doing the trick (too operationally slow&Quirky). Went looking, Tried Olympus, NOT impressed. Sold it. Bought a Sony A7R. I was impressed but for different reasons.I've kept this one (even after all these years) but it's still heavier than I want walking around all day, so still looking for an all-day, every-day camera.Bought a Fuji X-100. Nice but the original was too slow. Bought a Lumix LX-100. Nice and fast, compact. Sharp, fast Leca 24mm to 70mm f1.7-2.8 lens. Wickedly good stabilization. Shoots awesome 4K video. Nice B-Roll to my G9. IQ is still veronica despite the smaller sensor, especially in video. Still, I'll probably break down and get another Fuji because I miss the FUJI COLOUR SCIENCE AND THEIR "LOOK" to go with my Nikons, Sony and Lumix cameras.I give up, just keeping them all with a foot in almost every camp. None of them really do it completely for me.Did I mention film cameras yet... But thanks, excellent video
I'll admit I was tempted to get the x100v at one point until I played around with one in store and realised I don't need it. I feel like a lot of people buying the x100v nowdays don't actually need the x100v, the camera is hyped by photography content creators because it has everything you need for pro/semi-pro use while still being compact in size as opposed to having to lug around full gear. If you were never someone who needed that to start with there is no point buying this camera just because it is hyped, im saying this because here in Asia I see a lot of literal beginner/ very amateur photographers buy it blindly as a first time camera just for it's "built in filters" after seeing videos on tiktok or RUclips or celebrities using it, it's compact but honestly still big for it to be pocketable. I have the original GR and although a bit slow, it still produces very nice images
I would get a Sony a6X00 and a Voightlander Color-Skopar in 21mm or 35mm. I used an NEX-6 and a 21mm Color-Skopar years ago and it was a great light travel camera. I now use an old Sony A7 and a 40mm Rokkor-M. Poor man’s Leica. The original A7 was light and more compact than anything currently in the A7 lineup. A true film rangefinder and ultra compact camera is the wonderful Olympus XA with a 35mm 2.8. I carried one for over 20 years.
I love voigtlanders! I’d just be careful of the 21mm f/4P as the corner color casts are pretty terrible. I had that for a while - the size was fun and black and whites were great. I believe they fixed the color cast in the new 3.5 version.
I've been curbing my desire for this camera with my a7c and Zeiss 35mm 2.8 tiny prime. The benefit of this means I've got a camera I can use as a C cam at weddings for a safety angle but also have something tiny for day to day stuff! I do wish there were film emulations / recipes available for JPEGs for personal stuff so I didn't have to edit ALL the RAWs I take all the time....
Check out Veres Deni Alex. He has a RUclips channel. He's done a lot of work adjusting the Sony picture profiles to use them like film simulations, and has even made a few to replicate Fuji Eterna and Classic Chrome. They're not identical, but very close!
@@legendofthecamera Only because they don't understand the brand. Not all of us use designer murses and use it as a fashion accessory. I still use Fuji too, both are fine systems, though different.
I think this was a great video. I loved my Ricoh GR1. I am considering getting the third edition. I’ve always wanted a Fuji X 100 but the alternatives have just been more my flavor for some reason. LX100II is awesome also.
Thank you! I’m a big fan of this compact camera niche in general, so when this camera started to get ridiculously inflated in price and hype, I just wanted to put out a reminder that there are other equally great cameras out there at normal prices and stock. I loved my GR3 - if you can get a good price on that, I’d go for it. People do complain about the sensor dust issue though I haven’t personally experienced it.
> creates a list to alternatives to X100V because it costs 2.000 in the parallel market and has stock nowhere > Proceeds to recommend a camera that it's 1.100% more expensive, that you have to wait 3 months to get your hands on.
Your alternative options are well thought out and explained. I love the look and portability of the X100 series and want one but can't justify it at the moment while I still have the X-Pro2. Your reference to the Voightlander with adapter has prompted me to look at alternative compact lenses and appropriate adaptors as a compromise.
Thank you for the feedback! The Xpro2 is a camera you could probably keep for a lifetime. It has two OVF magnification settings, which the Xpro3 does not. With the 3, you lose out on using wide angle lenses (wider than 23mm) with the OVF. Not sure how happy I am to have sold mine 😅 Definitely check out the voigtlander lenses. I’d recommend the M mount ones because you’ll be able to adapt them to anything. X mount voigtlander lenses are even more compact, but you lose out on being able to adapt them to other systems.
@@legendofthecamera IM BEGGING YOU help me find a THIN compact lens for Sony A6700 so I can fit it in my pocket!! The Sony lenses are SO LONG! That's why I started looking at Fujifilm they seem to have shorter lenses. I want a 20 and 35mm one or if it can adjust between that range even better, just needs to be THIN!
I wanted to get a compact personal camera just to take pictures for fun, since I didn’t feel like taking my Sony A7 IV everywhere with me, so I thought I could get myself a Fuji X100V or X100F. But since it’s a bit too expensive right now, I ended up getting a used Fuji X-E3 for $400 bucks and I love it! The only feature I absolutely wanted to have is the film simulations and recipes, and the X-E3 delivers.
@@legendofthecamera Yeah! And also the fact that I feel a bit insecure carrying the Sony A7 IV around because it is an expensive camera and thieves notice 😂
Then again, many modern photographers are rediscovering film. True, shooting film requires a somewhat different view towards photography especially with an all mechanical camera. You can purchase a fine professional quality film camera for a fraction of any of the cameras reviewed here. I recommend taking a look at the Nikon rangefinder cameras. In particular the models S2, S3, SP, S4. They were manufactured from 1954-1964 and a great many are still working perfectly. I own and use two of them. There are also the S3 Millennial reissued in 2000 with a 50mm f/1.4 lens or an SP Anniversary released in 2005 with a 35mm f/1.8. These are fairly easily found and may make you very happy indeed.
The cost of ownership is a great point. I'm planning to buy the x100V next year but I will only make that purchase if I can get the camera at MSRP or lower. If the new x100 camera is released. I'm guessing the x100v will go down in price by at least $50-100. I would definitely buy it at that point and put that $100 into a variable ND filter. I wonder what the next x100 would look like and the features it will offer.
As an alternative for the X100V, I would definitely have some variation of the X-E class bodies, I have and use the X-E2s and X-E3. The X-E3 has most of the speed of use as the X100V albeit without the optical finder, but with the advantage of interchangeable lenses. It is still available new and doesn't have the missing switches and dials that were left off of the X-E4.
Hey Stanley, love the content! Just wanted to mention that your mic level was a little too low. I needed to max out my volume which isn't a problem, but thought you'd wanna know :) Keep up the awesome content!
For me, the Fuji X-100 series, the Fuji X-Pro series, an a couple of micro 4/3 cameras were to serve as temporary alternatives to the full-frame Leica M digital camera that I planned on buying. Eventually, I purchased a Leica M10 to use with my following lenses: 21mm f/1.4 Leitz 35mm f/1.4 Zeiss 90mm f/2 Leitz However, my Fuji X-Pro 2 with the following Fujinon lenses proved to be more reliable than my M10 which spent a lot of time in the repair shop. 16mm f/1.4 23mm f/1.4 56mm f/1.2 Plus, my weather resistant Fuji X-Pro2 body with the weather resistant 23mm f/2 Fujinon lens was a great alternative to the Fuji X100 camera. Bottom line, for me, the Fuji X-Pro2 was a better alternative to the Fuji X100 and a better alternative to the Leica M10.
I really wanted the Fujiflim X100V but I just couldn't justify the $1400 price tag. That price is just for the camera alone and doesn't include the weather sealing kit and a spare battery. This alone adds an additional expense to an already very expensive. Fujifilm also recently announced that they are temporarily ceasing orders as they couldn't manufacture enough X100Vs right now. I am going to purchase the Ricoh GR III instead due to its compact design and the fact that I like to carry a camera with me everywhere I go. I can sacrifice weather sealing since I don't shoot in the rain although it would be nice for a future Ricoh camera to be weather sealed (I really hope the next iteration of the Ricoh GR camera will be weather sealed). Also, the Ricoh GR III has IBIS, which is very important since I tend to take street pics at night a lot in NYC.
I’m surprised you mentioned Leica as an alternative to the Fuji because they’re way too expensive lol. I will say that their value is excellent if you had to sell it because you will make your money back very easily. The Fujifilm x100t I’d say is the best bang for your buck and I even think the pictures look way better than the newer models because of the aging x Tran sensor. I had the x pro 3 at one point and used classic chrome on it. Hate to say it but I didn’t like the way it came out. Whereas the older fujis I’ve used and owned looked very close to film.
In making this video, I was thinking more along the lines of “luxury compact point and shoot alternatives”, since that’s basically what the x100v is. But speaking in terms of pure value within the Fuji universe, I agree with you to simply go with older Fuji cameras. I had the xpro2 for many years and I loved it. For a point and shoot, you don’t need the latest and greatest autofocus, and image quality hasn’t drastically improved in the past 5-8 years with these cameras. One Leica pick I must mention as a great value pick however is the M 240. It had beautiful film simulations and is currently at the rock bottom of its depreciation curve. It was $2500-3000 in 2019 and now it’s still sitting around $2500. If you bought it for $2500 back then and sold it now, it was basically a free 3 year rental 😂.
Thanks for the suggestions! I’m happy with my X100 first generation and will patiently wait for the V or VI becoming available. By the way, you have a really nice voice, ever considered a career in radio or working with voice overs if you don’t do that already?!
Also check out the previous XE cameras from Fuji. I had an X100V but I realised I really enjoy using vintage lenses and replaced it with an XE-2. The XE-4 takes away too many manual controls for me (and that’s impossible to find/maybe discontinued as well). I’ll normally take the X-E2 out with just one lens - either a vintage one or the 27mm pancake - so I still get to experience the creative challenge of a single lens.
Agree, I got a used X-E3 for very cheap and I think I found my perfect camera. It’s more versatile and it gets very compact with the 27mm pancake :) What vintage lenses would you recommend for the XE cameras?
@@koiqueeen I don't have a vast collection: a Hellios 44-2, Helios 44-4, Industar 50 and a Petri 50mm. all M42 mount. The Helios 44 series is a good place to start. The 44-2 if you want the possibility of swirly bokeh under the right conditions (but be prepared to deal with an unusual two-dial aperture system) or the 44-4 for a more standard design and generally sharper images. The quality control on these lenses massively varies so two of the same model might have entirely different characteristics. The Industar 50 is tiny but with an M42 mount adapter it's bigger than the 27mm Fuji.
This person gets it. X-E1 & 2 with 27 2.8 rock. Have these both. 1 is slow AF (to write the image 🤣) but got damn it has great colors. I didn’t like the X-E3.. too much reliance on screen for controls.
I would add the Ricoh GRIIIx to the list. The focal lenght is 40 mm eq, wich compares even better to the 100V, than the Ricoh GRIII. All you mention about the original GRIII, also counts for the GRIIIX.
In my personal usage, I ended up preferring the 28mm GRiii over 40mm, but it's true that the iiix is also an excellent alternative. Thanks for the suggestion!
Your 3rd and 4th alternatives. even used, are way beyond the price point of the X100V such that the average person would not consider them. I'm surprised you didn't include the X100F.. I have it (bought new and the X-Pro2, bought used) and they're great.
Yeah that's sort of like one of the main pulls of the X100V or X100F, the price. I'll just stick with my XT-20 and 23mm prime lens for now. It may not be as compact, but it does everything I need it to just fine.
People who are interested in the fuji x100v are people who look for the fuji presets film look so I don't think other brand than fuji should be considered. So in my opinion alternatives should be only fuji cameras except the Ricoh GR that have also few film presets.
Nitpicking, I think you are confused about the meaning of the term _rangefinder,_ The only *rangefinder camera* among your recommendations is the Leica M. The Fuji X100 and X-Pro cameras are just called Optical Viewfinder (OVF) cameras, that also include an Electronic Viewfinder function (EVF). I would have included the Fuji X-E4, that sells for about the same MSRP than the X100V with the kit 27mm lens. Personally, I didn't like the pared down interface but the performance is great.
Thanks for helping to clarify! The X100 and XPro are styled like traditional rangefinder cameras and have a digital mechanism to function as a rangefinder, so I felt comfortable calling them as such. They are simply not mechanical rangefinders as in the Leica Ms, but electronic ones. I made sure to make that distinction in the video. Otherwise golf rangefinders wouldn’t be called rangefinders either.
I sold my X100V and went for the X-Pro3 with a 27mm 2.8 WR. Didn’t really notice any problem regarding additional weight/size, and preferred the 27mm focal length, despite it being slower. Nevertheless, I recently saw a brand new black X100V available at WEX here in the UK, and couldn’t resist grabbing it. I think it was the fact that they are near impossible to find that made me do it,and I had to sell my X-Pro3 to pay for it, although I kept the lens for my X-T4. Chuffed as I am, I still think the X-Pro3 is a very viable option, and definitely if its your only camera.
Great video on a very timely topic - subscribed! If I may, I would add one of the previous generations of X100 bodies (S, T, and F) to your list. The X100F in particular is a wonderful camera. Its sensor is a generation older than the V so it lacks some of the latest film sims, and it has the older lens which was a little soft wide open and close up, but it’s still a gem. Good used ones are a little scarce and priced accordingly, but still more affordable than the inflated Vs at the moment.
Thank you! I realize that was an obvious topic that I could’ve talked slightly more about, but my original thought was to discuss alternatives to the x100 line in general.
It's also worth noting that a lot of the previous x100 cameras have also had a big old jump in price lately. I was looking at buying an original x100 camera 6 months ago and they're now almost 1.5x the price. Still leagues behind the x100v but the resale market is very spicy because of it
This is all purely opinion about audio, but a cardioid might fit your voice better. Or some fine tuning to your voice in post: it sounds too wet on my iPad Pro’s speakers. Again, just opinion - you might love the way it sounds and there’s no issue with the sound quality.
Interesting! I only have basic audio knowledge, so I wouldn’t say that my setup is perfect or even optimized, so I’ll check it out if I have the chance. Any specific recs you have since it’s still Black Friday?
@@legendofthecamera I’m equally a novice when it comes to audio. Davinci Resolve has a Dialogue Processor (in Effects) that can make voices more wet/dry. And playing with the equalizer helps too. Other than that I just watch Curtis Judd on RUclips 😅
The Leica TL2 / CL and Ricoh GRiiiX would be great alternatives. Only downside with the TL lenses is the prices on the more “budget” lenses for the system are going up in price as they are becoming more scarce since Leica discontinued the line. But I love the TL2 it’s heavy but very compact especially with the 18mm elmarit and small M lenses adapted to it.
Sadly Leica has abandoned the APS-C L-mount system, but a used CL is still a great option. As well as the Leica lenses, which can be hard to find, the Sigma primes fit well on the CL despite being designed for FF, and I’ve heard good reports on the Sigma 18-50/2.8.
I shoot Fuji, and my 15 year old son has had a Canon m50 for over a year. He got it and the kit lens for $350, Canon 22mm f2 for $120, and Sigma 56mm 1.4, and his next lens is the 18-135, and all way for way less than a 100v. Small form factor, 26mp, great image quality and color.. I used to think I wanted a 100V, but after being around his for a year, I would buy a m50 hands down over it, simply for the price, and everything the same, with changeable lenses. No brainer unless you want to pay an extra 1500 for the cool factor,,, which is a factor, but not at that price.
Although I like all of the alternatives! The X100V is the only one with build in flash that could do high sync flash speed. Unique especially in combo with the build in ND filter. This way you can make pics none of the other can straight out of the box. I wouldn't hesitate to go out with any of the other nice camera's for other types of shootings.
That’s a pretty good point. I forgot that it did have a built in flash (I’ve never used it haha). But it would make it very convenient not to have to carry an extra thing. Thanks for pointing that out!
@@legendofthecamera Its not only that tiny flash itself. Its the combo with the 4 stops build in ND filter and the X100V its leave shutter! You can photograph in bright sunlight at f2.0 using the ND filter + a bit of fill in flash this way. Maybe look it up. You can achieve unique pics this way.
@@WACONimages I see what you're trying to say. The GR3 has both an ND and leaf shutter, plus IBIS. The Q2 similarly has a leaf shutter and OS. Most premium compact point-and-shoots have leaf shutters capable of fast native flash sync speeds, including those from Sony (RX1R II, RX100 VII, etc). I agree with you that it's a very cool feature and creative tool to have, but it's not unique to the X100 series. In this video, I wanted to provide some alternatives that have similar features - hopefully, this discussion would also help flash-shooters get a few more ideas on what cameras are available to them 😊
Considering the Fujffilm X100V is so hard to find (had one in the past). The Leica Q for an EDC is a lot bigger, so I'm currently testing the Leica CL as my EDC. Creative greetings Alain
It’s always rough trying to find the best edc system. Having tried all these, I find myself leaning towards a combination of a GR3 and M lenses on Sony bodies for best portability.
@@legendofthecamera the GR series are indeed fun cameras. I had the GRII for a while, however, I found it a bit too small and weird to hang around my neck.
I found out about the X100 V while looking for info on the Leica D-Lux 7. It seems people really don't rate the D-Lux as I never see it mentioned as an X100 alternative despite the similar price.
I bought the x100f used for 1000 usd instead, I've been so happy with it, some day I would love to upgrade to the x100v though because of the extra settings and the mega pixels! :)
They didn’t change much about the form, but the latest generation always comes with the fun features. I’d imagine they’ll come out with the newest gen soon, which will end the crazy inflated prices on the V.
Doesn’t appear to be any shortage of X100V here in Australia and they have even been discounting them at major online retailers. X-Pro 3 is retailing for the same price as the 100V. The price is AU$ 1960 which is roughly US$1310 so competitive globally but I do see international eBay 2nd selling way more so there maybe is a shortage in other parts of the world. Maybe there is an X-Pro 4 coming seen.
Stanley, an excellent alternative range of cameras... but in all honesty, you should be doing voice overs not worrying about cameras... as your voice is really mellow and soothing... so find yourself a company who needs your skills.... cheers yoki..
I had the X100f and nice as it was it never quite felt at home in my hands, never felt intuitive like my Canon cameras. I needed something between my ‘work’ Canon and my phone. I needed a walking around camera with quality but one that didn’t feel like work. So when the 100V replaced the f I grabbed one as soon as it was released. I cannot tell you how many wonderful images it’s made for me. I love the little thing. But I’d also love to try out a Q2 or M11. It’s fun that the Q2 and X100V are so often compared when their specs and price are so vastly different. Two quality cameras for sure. I think if I really wanted a discreet ‘street’ camera that little Ricoh would be a solid choice too. thanks for an excellent video. Really appreciate how informative and yet how calm it is.
Thank you for the feedback! I think these mirror my thoughts very closely. I’m a big fan of this segment in general also because I’ve also been looking for the perfect non-work camera. I’m currently on the Q2, which is a real gem, but it’s not perfect. I think I had slightly more enjoyment with my GR3 before it unfortunately broke.
Recently got the X-S10 and absolutely love it! It has changeable lenses and IBIS, but the body itself doesn't have that retro look that many are going for, apparently... ;-)
I was tempted too, but I ended up going for the XPro3 instead. Works exceptionally well with M-mount lenses. Lacks a mechanical rangefinder, but the digital rangefinder is wonderful. Part of why I didn't want to go with a Pixii is that it's a crop sensor camera - if I was going to pay that much, I'd prefer full frame. Hoping to try it some day though as it's a really interesting camera!
I bought the x100v on a whim from an eBay auction for a small discount right when it came out who knew it would get so hard to find . I feel like the Xe3 and 23mm lens would be the move . I have the xe4 I like it but those lack of buttons threw me off for a bit .
That’s awesome! Yeah I think the small viewfinder and the ergonomics prevented me from personally considering the xe4, but it seems like a great alternative for those who don’t mind those features. After all, it’s still a highly compact, good looking camera with great image quality.
@@legendofthecamera Yep. I used it in recent travels all over Scotland and Italy, which I chronicled in black and white photos on my instagram. Cheers!
Thank you for all your suggestions! I've compiled a list of popular picks and added them to the comments.
u misunderstood the point, the reason why people are so in love with x100v is also becasue it is much more cheaper than a leica
@@legendofthecamera Agreed. Way too many options. 👍🏼👍🏼
the comparable lens would be the 23mm/2.0
@@legendofthecamera Only thing is that the 23mm lens is nice and compact. I find my xh1+23mm 1.4 big.
I don’t think you can make an X100V alternative video without talking about the XE4
Probably, but I don’t have direct experience with the camera so I didn’t feel like I could offer any valuable comparison insight. Looks like a nice camera though!
Also, the X-E4 is currently out of stock everywhere as well
When we say pocket camera do any cameras really belong in pockets? Even if small enough a camera probably does not belong in jeans pockets. Not a good place for a camera. Hoodie pockets? Plenty of room but things can fall out of them as well. Coat pockets sure but try that in July!
Yeah another out of stock camera 😂
Not a fixed lens so not an alternative IMO.
I’ve also heard great things about the Panasonic. Hope to try them out one day!
I agree. Pair the GX85 up with the Panasonic Leica Summilux 15mm (30mm equivalent) f1.7 lens and you have a camera that can take amazing photos.
The m4/3 cameras offer a lot of value for the money!
@@cameraz99 100% and if you are looking to save a bit, you can pick up the dji 15mm 1.7 basically identical to the leica but with a different coating
For me is the best street combo GX85/GX9 + Leica 15mm (30 mm FF)
I almost got an X100V two years ago but I went for the GRIII instead. Pocketable makes all the difference for me. I always have it, and no one notices it.
I ended up loving that camera more than all the other ones on my list. It’s an amazing one for sure.
GR is ninja.
Any dust on your sensor?
@@helsonly722 Not yet.. I've had the camera about 2 years.
Uhhh I don't think anyone is looking for alternatives that cost 5-10 times more. An alternative is something that is similarly priced and performs a similar function. I don't understand how the x-e4 (or earlier models) didn't make it into your list. Terrible suggestions imo
😂 I concur. But yes they are nice cameras.
Great work Stanley, very informative and rather timely as my very good friend lives outside of London in the UK and we were discussing this angle but from a seller's perspective, he reckons
he could offload his Black V100V at the moment given the lack of available stock and surrounding manic hype for about 1500 pounds.
Oh, THAT London! 😅
Thanks for this video. I also was looking for a X100V but found myself a X-T30 II instead. I added a Fujinon 28mm 2.8 to the equation to get a VERY compact camera with all those beautiful Fuji JPEG goodies and the flexibility of lens exchange on top.
That’s awesome! They’re definitely very solid cameras with a highly portable build. I had the older xt20 once too.
I had an x-T30 that I sold because of the annoying viewfinder lag between shutter activations - this camera had the worst of any mirrorless brands.
"only" 280 subs? wtf
u deserve lot more bro,
keep up the amazing work!
Thank you, I appreciate the support!
What a fantastic host Stanley is, knowledgeable, friendly and to the point
Thank you for the feedback!
As a used option, the Olympus PEN-F. A joy to use & the lenses are diminutive.
Love my Pen-f!
The Olympus PenF is a compelling alternative
A GX85 with a Leica summilux 15mm F1.7 is still my favourite rangefinder combo.
People still underestimate M43 cameras. I owned a GR IIIx and sold it. Overall, my GX850 is better.
I picked up a used Sony RX1 10 years ago; some of the best $ I’ve spent. Still going strong, still love the IQ.
IQ hasn’t changed dramatically in the past 10 years, I think you’re set for another 10 on that camera - great investment!
I love my rx1r - hard to believe you are the only one I’ve seen even mentioning it in the chat. You can easily pick up an rx1rii for roughly the same crazy prices people are paying for the x100v and the rx1rii has the viewfinder built in.
Stuck with one lens is the one of the points why I want the X100V.
If you can find an xt 10,20, or 30 I think they're great alternatives as well!
Beat that!
X-E4 is a better value for sure. The main draw of the X100V over the X-E4 is the premium build, OVF, leaf shutter, and super compact 23/2 lens.
Haha I enjoyed reading this. This is exactly where I’m at too. I have too many cameras due to end-stage G.A.S. 🤣
Stanley can I hire you just to narrate anything. You have a perfect smoothing voice that calm anyone.
Thank you for the compliments!
A better camera for me than my X100V is my XF10. Awesome images and the camera is with me everywhere, cannot say that about the X100V
The XF10 is a really underrated camera, which is good because I got mine brand new really cheap!
I have too, is unbeatable!!!
Sold my X100V for a Sony RX1R II and don't regret it at all!
100% agree. It’s a great camera and one that I would love to add to my kit, but is far too inflated in both price and hype at the moment.
Is the GRiii good??
Thank you for your excellent, unbiased opinion. I subscribed to your channel because of it.
Happy to help!
Your voice is so calming, it was a joy listening to you☺️
Thank you!!
The A7C seems pretty awesome too!
Check out Veres Deni Alex. He has a RUclips channel. He's done a lot of work adjusting the Sony picture profiles to use them like film simulations, and has even made a few to replicate Fuji Eterna and Classic Chrome. They're not identical, but very close!
I'm glad you touched on Leica M and Q series!
I’m glad you think so! I’m surprised some people aren’t happy about that 😅
@@legendofthecamera Only because they don't understand the brand.

I took a look at the photographs for the first time and now I know why this camera is in demand: The photographs are razor sharp!
Definitely! It also has pretty nice rendering and is fun to use at the same time.
@@legendofthecamera Does it have bokeh?
Your alternative options are well thought out and explained. I love the look and portability of the X100 series and want one but can't justify it at the moment while I still have the X-Pro2. Your reference to the Voightlander with adapter has prompted me to look at alternative compact lenses and appropriate adaptors as a compromise.
Thank you for the feedback! The Xpro2 is a camera you could probably keep for a lifetime. It has two OVF magnification settings, which the Xpro3 does not. With the 3, you lose out on using wide angle lenses (wider than 23mm) with the OVF. Not sure how happy I am to have sold mine 😅
Definitely check out the voigtlander lenses.
That’s awesome! The Sony is pretty compact, but with their lenses it can get bulky for everyday use. XE3 makes everything almost pocketable!
@@legendofthecamera Yeah! And also the fact that I feel a bit insecure carrying the Sony A7 IV around because it is an expensive camera and thieves notice 😂
I love my X100V and myX-E3 too!
I think this is a great route to take. It is indeed a different approach that modern photographers might enjoy. Thanks for the recommendations!
Nice review. Have one more to add. Panasonic gx9 with the Panasonic / Lecia 15mm
you have a nice voice to listen to bro! and thanks for not having an annoying intro jingle etc.

Thanks for the feedback. Fixing that for future content!
For me, the Fuji X-100 series, the Fuji X-Pro series, an a couple of micro 4/3 cameras were to serve as temporary alternatives to the full-frame Leica M digital camera that I planned on buying.
Eventually, I purchased a Leica M10 to use with my following lenses:
21mm f/1.4 Leitz
35mm f/1.4 Zeiss
90mm f/2 Leitz
However, my Fuji X-Pro 2 with the following Fujinon lenses proved to be more reliable than my M10 which spent a lot of time in the repair shop.
16mm f/1.4
23mm f/1.4
56mm f/1.2
Plus, my weather resistant Fuji X-Pro2 body with the weather resistant 23mm f/2 Fujinon lens was a great alternative to the Fuji X100 camera.
Bottom line, for me, the Fuji X-Pro2 was a better alternative to the Fuji X100 and a better alternative to the Leica M10.
I went down a similar path - X100, XPro2 & 3, M240 & M10, Q2.
I ended up with a GR3 😂 funny how that turned out.
For an event more compact substitute for the X100V is the Canon M50 with the 22mm pancake lens, quite the undervalued and forgotten camera
I think you'll love it and won't miss out on much at all. I personally prefer the GR3 over the X100V.
Glad this helped!
Thanks for the compliments, perhaps I might go that route in the future 😂
The Leica Q2 is magical!
It’s both a beautiful camera and takes wonderful photos
Your 3rd and 4th alternatives. even used, are way beyond the price point of the X100V such that the average person would not consider them. I'm surprised you didn't include the X100F.. I have it (bought new and the X-Pro2, bought used) and they're great.
Yeah that's sort of like one of the main pulls of the X100V or X100F, the price. I'll just stick with my XT-20 and 23mm prime lens for now. It may not be as compact, but it does everything I need it to just fine.
does the x100f have classic negative film simulation?
@@eallusion I'm afraid not. I wish it did.
People who are interested in the fuji x100v are people who look for the fuji presets film look so I don't think other brand than fuji should be considered. So in my opinion alternatives should be only fuji cameras except the Ricoh GR that have also few film presets.
I think that is a subset of fujifilm owners for sure, but I wanted to discuss more general characteristics that buyers desire.
The best is Ricoh GR3. I have a XE4 with Fujinon 27mm but Ricoh in my opinion is a lot better and easy to use
I also love the GR3!
I’m actually thankful that the X-100V exploded…it lead me to purchasing the X-T5 with serious glass. No comparison.
I completely agree - the X-Pro3 is a great pick. Glad you were able to get an X100V in the end!
You sold your X100V to get the XPro3 and then sold your XPro3 to get the X100V? Makes so much sense...
Fujifilm XF10. The best alternative to any pocket camera!
I just bought an X100V for my new camera rental company called Camera Leader in Panama City Beach, Florida.
Hey! Thanks for suggestions
Please consider boosting your audio, it is very hard to hear with normal volume level
Thank you, will try to optimize my audio and mic technique in the future.
Still leagues behind the x100v but the resale market is very spicy because of it
Nikon A
Fuji X70
Sony RX1
Got a used Leica Q and can’t speak highly enough about it. Haven’t touched my MINT graphite xpro2 since. It’s for sale btw with a 35 1.4 and 56 1.2😉
Can’t beat full frame image quality! The Q/Q2s are definitely pretty magical.
In this video, I wanted to provide some alternatives that have similar features - hopefully, this discussion would also help flash-shooters get a few more ideas on what cameras are available to them 😊
Great content dude! I hope u upload more frequently
Really enjoyed this video 👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you!!
Love this guy / smart soft spoken. No bullshit good stuff
Thank you!
I found out about the X100 V while looking for info on the Leica D-Lux 7. It seems people really don't rate the D-Lux as I never see it mentioned as an X100 alternative despite the similar price.
I have the d-lux 7 and in my opinion it is a very valid alternative if not better. ;)
The shiba burped at the end 😆 so cute!
@@legendofthecamera Exactly! Maybe then we have a better chance to get a hold of a v!
Interesting! In any case, I’m sure stock will catch up sooner or later globally. In the meantime, here in the US it’s $$$$
You are EXCELLENT in your presentations! Keep up the good work and God bless your future! Also, the camera info is very clear!🙂
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback.
For me, the best part of this video was the cost analysis.
Excellent video. Many thanks. Very helpful.
Thank you!
What about the XE-3 and XE-4?
Stanley, an excellent alternative range of cameras... but in all honesty, you should be doing voice overs not worrying about cameras... as your voice is really mellow and soothing... so find yourself a company who needs your skills.... cheers yoki..
Thank you!
I think I had slightly more enjoyment with my GR3 before it unfortunately broke.
you have the quietest videos on RUclips. turn up the gain!
Recently got the X-S10 and absolutely love it! It has changeable lenses and IBIS, but the body itself doesn't have that retro look that many are going for, apparently... ;-)
And the X-E4?!
I'd like to add another one to the list
Pixii
Half the cost of a Leica, while being rated better than every Leica other than the M11 but DXO.
I went with an XPro3 and absolutely love it.
Awesome! It’s a lovely camera and even cheaper to buy than an x100v at the moment.
@@legendofthecamera Yep. I used it in recent travels all over Scotland and Italy, which I chronicled in black and white photos on my instagram. Cheers!
What about the X-E3?? Why did you leave this out? Great small camera, that does all the same as the X-Pro does.
That was nice Stanley. However please please please it is NOT the 'Vee'!! It is the 5. We don't call the IV a One Vee or the VI a Vee One!
This cracked me up. Noted lol
I would recommend the X-E4 instead.
Good points bro. What camera did you use to film this video?
Thanks, I used an A7iv to film
