Is it just me, or are Film Theory and game theory one of the very few channels that you can binge watch episodes no matter how old they are? Not trying to toot Matpat's horn but it's true, he has the best theory channels by far
It’s universal, showing new sides of our favourite things, while we learn more about the world around us.
That Spiderman line always bugged me too. He's literally got a Lego death star. The only thing I could think of is that the people he was talking to, and notably his role model mentor, wouldn't have known what he was talking about
Tom Holland has never seen a Star Wars movie.
HE knows about it, but have to say it simplified to make sure everyone knows what he is talking about
Or in the heat of the battle he just forgot what they were called.
Ant-Man turn small
Ant-Man go into Thanos ear
Ant-Man turn big
Ant-Man win

Very tru
Ant-Man save world
Or he turns small, craws into the gauntlet, turns bigs, and boom. Not only would it stop Thanos, but it would probably break the gauntlet too.

Can you please do a theory on the movie “up” and see if the house is actually able to be lifted 😊😊 would love that
Anime 456 someone already did that in real life and it worked.
i think he did already, and no it's not possible even the animators said that it's not possible cause there wasn't enough space in the memory to make too much ballons
It seems like we would have done that already or at least he would have 5 years ago

Short answer, not even close.

The reason Spidey talked about Empire so vaguely is because he didn't think any of the other superheroes knew what he was thinking about. Like Iron Man says in Infinity War, "the kid's seen more movies". Plus he and Ned build like a $400 Lego Death Star in Homecoming, so he's definitely VERY familiar with Star Wars.
COWS
I thought the same thing
COWS yeah but who doesn’t know about that scene?
A New Hope was released in 1977. Empire Strikes Back was in 1980. There's no way none of the Avengers would not know about Star Wars. Even Cpt Rogers would have seen it since he probably put it on his list of Pop Culture to know. He's already seen War Games for crying out loud...
I blame the writers.
Dr.Weavile, PhD Thats interesting, was there an interview or something he admitted this in?
Either way, if we're looking for an answer that has continuity between Civil War, Homecoming, and Infinity War I could see Peter downplaying just how much he knows about certain topics if its alienated others from conversations before by him nerding out on someone who didnt get it or wasn't interested. Lord knows Ive been on both ends of that.
I was just about to comment that, glad someone else thought that
**Black Panther Voice** And get this man an orange slice!

I thought that based on the movie (which is the physics logic used here) Pym particles only alter the distance between atoms when changing sizes. Wouldn't that maintain the mass and only increase the volume? As in when increasing in size, you only gain volume and not mass? There's the same number of atoms and other particles but they're just farther apart when getting bigger....
Jamyang Pelsang was thinking the same thing
I agree, through the explanation in the movie Antman should be significantly weaker when he grows in size due to the lower density in his body. I want an explanation as to where the extra mass comes from
I don't think it actually changes the distance between atoms, I think that was the just writers not understanding science all that much. I think it actually changes mass because thats how his powers act in the movies.
Jamyang Pelsang you're right, but that behavior isn't actually shown in the movie. Or at least it's a bit inconsistent. Hank carries a tank that ought to be as heavy as a tank, while Scott is always the same weight (except when we runs across someone's gun/shoulder)
I usually have a loose suspension of disbelief, but the internal inconsistency within the rules of the movie take me out of it.
you are correct, but even on the movie Hank Pym after saying exactly that was seen carrying a real tank as a keychain...sooooooooooooooooooooooo.... movie logic
it makes me feel smart when I understand what your saying... and then I think of everything I don't understand

Canonically, the Pym particles only increase the space between particles, thereby increasing volume, but with mass remaining constant. Due to the law of Conservation of Energy, it would be impossible to create more mass. Lang’s volume is indeed increasing, but not his mass.
Canonically Hank pyms explanation is proven wrong many times, even by himself,
he either doesn't really know how it works, or he gave Scott a smart-but-understandanle science sounding explanation to get Scott to not bug him about how it works
That’s what I was thinking
Are we not gonna talk about how also due to the square cube law, when ant man gets bigger he would cook himself alive due to increasing his body mass (the thing that creates body heat) by a factor of 3 but only increasing his surface area (the thing that dissipates said heat) by a factor of 2. Every time he gets big he would essentially be microwaving his own internal organs. The opposite would be true for getting smaller. His body mass would decrease by a factor of 3 while his surface area only decreases by a factor of 2, thus leading to Antman dissipating far more heat than he produces and freezing to death.
I remember reading an awesome paper on that in the 90's - something about the real science of Giant Moinsters and Godzilla in particular.
Cody Dudash I hadn’t thought about this, but you make a great point! Also a very amusing one. :-)

Hi It's Me He did talk about it in the last one, but this video still has a lot of information that contradicts it
Douglas Trace what?
I’ve had this question in the back of my head since forever: if shrinking increases his density, wouldn’t growing decrease it?
Yep. But it's a super hero movie, so it doesn't matter
Ya
Yes it would decrease his density and he also would be super light now. I think that means instead of being stronger he could jump really high.
Hold on, in the last video about ant man you said his mass doesn't increase or decrease, only his density, so this makes no sense to me.

Lmao I was wondering how many people actually knew what that was, glad I'm not alone
But he doesn’t gain mass, the distance between his atoms increases
Luk XD but the movie doesn’t follow those rules, so neither should Matt
Luk XD That's what i was thinking!
Wait... If his atoms got far enough apart would he just slip through stuff like water and air more easily?
Plus wouldn't his atoms go far enough apart that they would lose their pull on each other and he'd be atom men
Pivot Animations he would start to float away like Matt said in another video, but at some point... yeah why not
Missisipa Yeah logically if he were to keep getting bigger he would become transparent and move through objects,
Luk XD The movies are ridiculously inconsistent with his mass changing/not changing, but if you look at only the airport scene his mass definitely increases with his size. I love Ant-Man as a character but the movies bother me with how much they butcher basic science and continuity.
matpat's theory is broken because the way pym particles function is by increasing and decreasing the space between atoms which means his mass atually doesnt change and he has the same strength, so he cant actually lift cars and have superhuman strenth in the large form and he could get easily lifted by a strong person and this theory is pointless. oh and whenever ant man punches someone in small form he should go right through them like a bullet because the pressure is huge due to p=f/a
Except we know that can't possibly be how pym particles actually work since, in the first movie, he shrank down to a sub-atomic scale. His entire body was much, much smaller than even a single atom, & yet he was still very clearly a multi-cellular, let alone multi-atomic person.
thus black hole
blue-eyes white dragon I mean, the movie dont really follow the rules, he also shouldn't be able to breath when that tiny
Dr. Zoidberg That’s the only exception but what blue-eyes said was exactly how the pym particles were explained in ant man.
Yes but in the comics it would work because it doesn't just change the distance, it changes the mass.
2:35
As a teenager I think Peter said that because he didnt want to sound like a nerd and only used as much detail that he needed too to sound more cool.
I thought this is a negative video about Ant-Man, but in conclusion, Marvel Studios just did a great job to both Ant-Man and Giant-Man. This is a great video
Actually Matpat, the main reason he'd move slowly when enlarged is that electricity has a set speed so every single action he tried to make would be delayed and overall slower than he would be at normal or tiny size. When shrunk to half an inch his reaction time and movement speed would increase not only because of his reduced weight, but also because the electrical signals would need to travel a tiny fraction of the distance between his brain cells and also between his brain and his muscles.
Kodyjay true, but his mass stays the same. Good explanation though. Makes sense
Like a fly?
wow. at first i didnt buy your explanation, but i did the maths and realized that human nerve cells are in fact really really really really bad at transmitting electric signals...
299,792,458 m/s is c and cables are capable of 50% to 99% of that,
whereas human nerve cells just manage a tiny 100 m/s which is ~0.000033% of c.
biology is pathetic
edit: actually.. i cant do math. its probably way lower
edit2: 0.00000033% i forgot two zeroes
thats the dumbest thing ive ever heard. the speed of electricity is fucking near instantaneous. nervous systems aren't limited by that, it's litterally just reaction time, which wouldn't change.
oh and where does your reaction time come from then? its all electricity in your brain as well
But didn’t they say in the Ant Man movie that the person’s mass always stays the same? I think the reason why he would be moving so slow is because his limbs are scarcely dense enough to fight off the drag of the air around him.
Yeah that's complete bs. If he reallt did keep the same mass he'd create a black hole or murder everyone he hits while small. Try using your brain before you comment

Film theory: mathematics
Me: ok bye
get out of this chanel
according to your first video on Pym Particles, the amount of atoms (mass) doesn't change so he wouldn't be any heavier meaning he would be just as agile and strong.
if pym particles really did just increase the space between the atoms/molecules, than wouldn't he retain the same amount of mass? he would just become just much less dense, so any hero could just pick him up. right?
Edit: thats how the black hole theory works, right? thats also why he can jump so high when he's small
that would mean that the strength scaling with the square cube theory would be irrelevant, correct? sorry mat :)
that's what I thought, hes going against his last theory.
Dude I was about to write another comment saying about the same thing!!! Great minds think alike I guess!
Yeah I'm surprised he didn't just follow up his own theory and talk about how Ant-man would just float away lol
Yes but even the movies don't follow this rule. He goes sub-atomic and that shouldn't be possible.
Yeah the first movie ignores it, so I’m assuming he would ignore it too

when matpat was explaining the square cube law he said "The TL;DR" and "Long story short" about 50 times
Wait....if he is using Pym Particles, wouldn’t he be the exact same mass and strength? Like when he is small
Yeah. He talked about that in the last Antman video.
Yeah. So when he added space between particles to become giantman, he would only turn himself into a gas.
spideygeek201 if mass stays the same, but he gets smaller, density increases. Therefore, strength or at least force(i.e. psi) would increase.
Marshnallow man 2.0
They had a miniature tank hanging from a keychain on a human being with normal strength.
So it both does and doesn't retain the same mass.

Impossible. Perhaps the archives are incomplete.
Pym particles can only increase the intermolecular distance, because of which your blackhole theory is justified. But if you factor that in the mass won't increase in reality, it should be the same, but marvel doesn't follow up on their laws because otherwise the pym arrow from hawkeye would've probably just flown away...

Wouldn't antman overheat and die since active cells generate heat, and his body is designed to give off heat for his current size? If he gets really big, his much larger volume wouldn't beable to give off enough heat through his much smaller surface area, to stop him from overheating.
Elephants have large flappy ears to give themselves more surface area to give off the heat of their much larger volume. So if you make an elephant small, thier volume will give all the heat away over thier much larger surface area, and they'd freeze.
I'm sure the suit is air conditioned or something. 😂

My friend: I'M SO SHORT!!!!!!
me: *sends this video*
I wonder if this could ever be something developed in real life. To have that much super strength when you are that small. The science behind it is just incredible. I mean, how exactly do you change the space between the atoms that make up a person so that they become smaller or bigger?
It also kind of plays on the idea that the underdog wins. I mean who would think that an ant sized man would be one of the determining factors if his respective team wins or not? Scott Lang's story line takes that idea of the underdog to whole other level, literally making him the smallest player on the field. While all these other characters have these incredible powers that increase their strength at their normal size, ant man has the tables turned and takes his own size and decreases it so that he can be more powerful relative to his size.
MatPat didn't u say in the last ant-man episode that pym particles only makes the distance between atoms bigger or smaller ? If so , the mass and all of that stays the same , it is only the distance between atoms changed .
Dinamyte Collector™ YES THANK YOU!!
I was hoping for acknowledgement of this but it presents a whole new set of problems.
That one was answered from the comics by Pym saying he was pulling the additional mass from a pocket dimension. Because Science did a video about this and his answer was Scott would pull in the additional mass from the atoms in his surroundings, making him radioactive.
Yeah why didn’t he mention that I was thinking that the whole episode
This is the comment I was looking for...
I still want to know where is that giant Thomas.
Alvinsland2 and figge plays such matter doesn't change mass it only changes size so there wouldn't be anymore food then he started out with.
energy must be conservatived if it didn't then all other physics wouldn't work.
gravity is a negative force it is negative energy (no spirit bullshit) and it has to be made proportional to the amount of mass regardless of the charge it exists so that the universe is always equal to nothing.
writing an essay about Galileo so came back for the square cube law 5:12
Really helped.
I'm so grateful you always use also metric values in your videos
Very entertaining show, MatPat, but there is a big error.
06:52 "His mass would increase... with his volume"
False... even by the science fiction rules of this fictional universe.
First, fictional physics.
In the first Ant-Man, Pym says they reduce the volume of "the space b/w atoms". He never says that Pym particles add or remove mass. By real physics that is impossible by *Newton's 1st law unless they add energy. Pym never says anything about adding energy or mass.
Pym says the molecules become "more dense".
That means the mass does NOT change when he shrinks because density=[mass/volume]. He is NOT heavier. He is a super-dense 200 pound ant.
So when he becomes "Giant Man" the volume increases with the SAME mass. His density would plummet! He'd be like a 60 foot tall parade inflatable.
Two adults could easily pick him up.
What you said about the surface area of skeletal muscle is true. He would still be strong... but not his bones.
He would have very low bone calcium density, called osteoporosis. When he kicked that 4000 lb (very dense) car his tibia would snap like a kit-kat bar.
Other then that, great video, really enjoyed it. Ty.
Edit: *Conservation of Mass (not Newton's Laws). Wrong reference corrected.
1 2 This is what I commented.
Ant-Man does not gain mass. The Pym particle can change the distance between atoms, rather than creating mass and violating the Law of Conservation of Mass. Though this does not make much sense because Dr. Pym carried a tank in his pocket, it is explicitly mentioned at the beginning of the Ant-Man movie. Scott Lang would not gain any weight when he transforms into Giant-Man. You actually made this clear at 12:32 when you claimed that he maintains his momentum when he changed size. Because momentum is mass times velocity, and no force is causing a change in velocity (neglecting air resistance), Ant-Man’s mass would be constant. Therefore, this entire video is invalid and self-contradictory.
Also, Newton’s first law states that “An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.” I believe that the Law that is being broken is the Law of Conservation of Mass.
There are so many smart people here! What grade do you learn all of this?
Nicholas Jarrett You are correct.
I referred to the wrong law.
Conservation of mass is what I was thinking but wrongly referenced Newton.
Lomonosov I think first championed this?
delta M= delta E/(c squared)
Error acknowledged. Correction accepted. Thanks.
I just stopped and realized how many irrelevant memes there are in the intro, like white and gold or black and blue. Never change MatPat.
What
Your forgeting that as soon as he changed size by a significant margin he would either overheat or freeze, your surface area only gets multiplyed by a factor of two his volume gets multipled by a factor of 3 like you said, but with more mass comes more heat and his surface area can only release a certain amount of heat, eventually if he gets big enough his volume would create more heat then he could lose through his skin/surface area and he would boil. And vice versa for getting smaller, with volume being less than surface area he would lose heat to quickly and freeze.
I think I've learnt more in this video then I learn in a full science lesson because they litteral just fling a bunch of information at you and hope it sticks. I think the only reason why it sticks is because it uses characters I'm familiar with
Galileo was put under house arrest for insulting the pope not for proposing a heliocentric model. He wasn't even the first to propose such a model, Copernicus was and he wasn't put under house arrest.
Believe it or not, the Russo brothers have said that Tom Holland (Spider-Man's actor) has never seen any of the Star Wars movies. That's where the inspiration for that part of the character came from
LawofCinema But in Homecoming Peter was totally excited to build the Lego Deathstar with his friend, and he got the reference with it, so he clearly knows, and appears to greatly enjoy, Star Wars with that scene.
LawofCinema That's something Tom and I have in common then
Jamie Willman it's from civil war so maybe he watched after. Or maybe the character Peter likes it and Tom the actor hasn't seen it
But didn’t we already establish that his mass stays the same regardless of his size? Like how when he’s shrunken down and punches a dude it’s like a 160lb punch with the fist scaled down to the surface area of a bullet?
So when he scales upwards his mass should still stay the same as well. I believe you said that the number of atoms in his body doesn’t change. But the space between his atoms does. So.. what’s going on here?
4:29-4:30 MatPat:"He's to OP"

He doesn’t gain mass. Pym particles don’t create or destroy atoms. They change the space between them. Like you said in the last episode. He would be a lot less dense and maybe lighter than air.
MrLaFfGuY I agree but, in civil war he seemed to be much much heavier than a 200 pound man, they made it seem like he was a slow heavy giant
Just like the tank kept its weight while it was in someomes pocket. Ye, they didn’t really use the mass stays the same thing well.
Exactly, but it looks as if Marvel were to have forgotten about that.
bryan judson It's really confusing. Like how does he become smaller than atoms if it's the space between atoms that shrink? Or in the new movie where he shrinks the building and is capable of lifting it? The inconsistencies are insurmountable.
Kyle Fratini good point. Illuminati confirmed
The pym partical doesn't change the mass, It changes the distance between atoms. Makeing the square cube theory obsolete.
But wouldn't that mean that giant Scottish the weight as regular size scott
Strength is the sum all forces applied by all muscle cells, which is proportional to number of cells which proportional to volume.

Hey Game Theory I love your guy's show. It makes me feel like I learn something and you use games and movies or films to bring up science and even math. But Looking at this started to get me thinking. One thing I don't understand for the Giant ratio is how would this affect how much force is put into a kick or a punch?
I am not good with thinking too much science, but movies like Pacific Rim and obviously Ant-man's growth in Civil War/Ant-man and the Wasp got me thinking if the small punch is much more dangerous than a giant punch.

You should do one about why antman´s mass increases, since what the particles do is to stretch and compress the space between particles, he should be a balloon man when he gets big. Although that same issue creates a lot of problem in the movies, like how are his particles able to get smaller than the rest of particles around him.
I admire how much knowledge you learn from his videos👍👍👍
Matt I think you are missing the fact that they are using a science that was used in some move called "Epic" were creatures that get scaled down move faster something to do with nerve pluses making it to point A to B faster. This fact would work in reverse as well except it would slow down the body and also results in slower reaction time but looks like they don't care about the reaction time stuff though.

but, didn't mat said in the past video about ant man that the thing that is increasing when he shrinks is his density and not his mass shouldn't it be that he is still the same but decreasing his density so he weights the same but occupies more space?
Aryabhata also did a considerable amount of work in astronomy. He knew that the earth is rotating on an axis around the sun and the moon rotated around it. He also discovered the position of nine planets and stated that these also revolved around the sun. He pointed out the eclipses; both lunar and solar.
I thought that antman didn't change his mass when he became smaller though? so wouldn't he not change his mass when he gets bigger? I know that leads to other problems like how could he ever throw a truck but it does go against this theory
Justin Gray excatly lol just said that too
Justin Gray it's the pym particles they work differently and ignore most if not all scientific laws
Je'garo the warrior I know that, I'm just pretty that one of the things they did is not change the mass of the user, I thought that was a pretty big thing with them
ryko13 lolz, I hope matpat sees that
Well, even in the show, Pym explains that the particles don't add mass. They just compress or expand the particles of an object to change it's density.
I can't believe you spent this entire video explaining the obvious about the square-cube law rather than pointing out the _painfully_ problematic flaw in Ant Man enlarging himself.
The movie explains that when he shrinks, he retains his MASS and STRENGTH because all that has happened is his mass has shrunk to a tiny space and packs the "strength" of a man into the size of an ant. Which would be really badass. But the GLARING PROBLEM here is that if you do the reverse, you should actually turn him into a super giant weakling balloon-man. Why? Because now you are taking the strength of a man and spreading it out across the size of a giant. His total strength remains the same regardless of size. Pack 1 man's strength into the size of an ant and you have a superhero. Put 1 man's strength into the sizes of a giant and you have a Macy's Parade balloon.
1. Thanks genius you pointed out something everyone else in the comment section does
2. The actual movie doesn't follow this logic.
It's movie magic, just accept it. If it stayed consistent, how was the security guard in Antman able to hold a gun with the added human man's weight on it? Just don't waste your time writing huge messages about it, it's not worth it.
Actually not. By what you're saying, he should have gotten bigger strength when he shrinks, yet his power stays the same. It's clear the power doesn't redistribute over his body.
Now I have the image of Gi-Ant man (yes, in the comics that's what he's called when he's big) being blown away by the wind like a giant balloon man!
David Burke except in one instance when he fall from height, he penetrated floor like a 78kg ant
But in youre previous vid about ant-man you Said that his Mass and volume all stays the the Same because he's using pym particles and those particals only changes the distance between the atoms
You’ve forgotten that his mass actually stays the same so that means he’s got two problems:
1) When he’s small he’s supporting the same mass with less mussel and bone strength.
2) When he’s big his massive volume but relatively small mass means that he’s really very not dense. He might even be less dense than air, which would make him float away.
The physics of ant man makes no sense😂
Love your videos!
What would happen if MatPat did The Book Theorists?
actually i hope he does but it prolly wont happen
GalaxyDino23 I have wanted that for so long. It would be an amazing channel.
That we be cool
GalaxyDino23 its just a theory a LITERATURE THEORY
could be fun but there would probably be less memes
Such as a magical man from SMOSH said, “The man who makes a theory that he can sum up into 1 sentence and turns it into 15 minute videos....... MATPAT.”
CLAW WER What?
Isn't it the research that takes up 14 of the 15mins. Anyone can state a theory, he tries to justify it.
Matpat: Love me Disney!
His Videos: Bunny on crack, dark Disney, Disney death and Illuminati Disney
This video (the parts about sq cube law) literally past me my math test.
for anyone wanting to grind theorist points to level up theorist score, just rewind 6:33
MysticKnight thank's :D
Now I can catch up with everyone else! Thanks MysticKnight :D
6:27, thank you for putting the Nerd cubes logo.
My trig/cal teacher had this same debate one day against the "arachnid" movie. Going into a 45 min debate , explaining how building sized spiders couldn't move due to their mass vs having their regular strenght
Reached theorist level 100
Theorist master rank reached
In the new Antman movie, it explains why he wasn't in Infinity War.
Armin Ruckstuhl lmao they said it in infinity war.
He was in the quantum realm and can't go back because pym is gone by thanos
There’s an episode on this on the channel Kurzgesagt- In a Nutshell, called The Size of Life (2 parts) if u want to understand it better.
Taylor McGowan giant Antman seems very explosive hero (think about that example if we make bigger a mouse).
Give that man a cookie!
Why a cookie , we ducklings only eat bread of *SCIENCE*
Taylor McGowan LETS BLOW UP AN ELEPHANT
Oddly enough, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #14 (which also has Ant Man cameo) featured the Square Cube law, which Squirrel Girl takes advantage of, tricking her super villain du jour, Enigmo to become kaiju sized, but since he didn't have access to Pym particles, his ankles exploded under that kind of weight
If you have the subtles on in the intro deadpool says hey that's my line when mat stepped on the taco truck

NerdCubed reference, Im surprised but happy
marben I noticed it too
a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
marben I was about to comment that, I was pleasantly surprised
i’ve been falling asleep while watching these videos for the past two months, and now i can’t sleep without them💀😂😂😂
I feel like you said in an earlier video that his mass doesn’t change when the space between his atoms does? 🤔
