Endgame basically confirmed this. (Spoilers below) When Thanos snapped without the stones, it made that scratching of metal, just like you said. So it’s the stones that helped make the sound, apparently.
I'm no Marvel comics expert. But I think I remember hearing or reading that the snap isn't necessary, like anyone can control the powers of the gauntlet with just their mind. No physical action is required to activate powers. We even see that in the film. He uses singular stones without doing any form of physical requirement, just thinking of what he wants the stone's powers to do for him. The snap itself is just flair, showing "I can control everything in life with a simple gesture like this" like a form of showboating. When in Marvel reality. He could have done it by just thinking about wiping away half the universe.

He literally could do anything and it would work. It doesn’t need to be a snap or make a noise. He could clap, but the point is to show off how powerful he is by making an incredibly simple gesture. He doesn’t actually need to move.
He’s able to do that with the Reality Stone. It can make it much easier for him to snap his fingers by making the friction equal to the human hand. Thanos is also established as the toughest being in the universe and has the power stone for the force.

If you listen closely the sound you hear when thanos snaps is all the stones combusting and not a airwave. Your just thinking of a snap in the conventional manner. No one said thanos's snap needed sound or that the sound would be made conventional. Just that he needed to do the snapping motion.
He doesn't even need to do the motion. He could just think it and it would happen. Hell, the 6 stones can even make subconscious thoughts become reality if one isn't extremely careful and prepared. The snap is purely symbolic rather than a requirement.
Except there wasn't really a snapping sound, so he really just did the gesture itself. Also, the act of destroying half the universe doesn't REQUIRE the snap, he uses it as a gesture and wills the stones to act. Snapping itself doesn’t wipe out half the universe, he could do that with a single thought. He snaps for dramatic effect, and he could just use the reality stone to make it seem and sound like he just snapped.

I'm not entirely sure about the mechanics of a gauntlet made of dwarven metal channeling the raw ingots of reality into the removal of 50% of each sentient species in the universe, but I don't think the dwarves would require a functional snap from a gauntlet if you can't functionally snap in a gauntlet...
About to say that. Kennui Muffins. We know he doesn't need the snap in the MCU too. We have seen him (and others) use the Infinity Stones powers without snapping. Like seriously, it is a visual medium - of course they used a visual cue to communicate the scene. If anyone literally thinks the snap was literally needed, that person needs help.

I'm no Marvel comics expert. But I think I remember hearing or reading that the snap isn't necessary, like anyone can control the powers of the gauntlet with just their mind. No physical action is required to activate powers. We even see that in the film. He uses singular stones without doing any form of physical requirement, just thinking of what he wants the stone's powers to do for him.
The snap itself is just flair, showing "I can control everything in life with a simple gesture like this" like a form of showboating. When in Marvel reality. He could have done it by just thinking about wiping away half the universe.

Like seriously, it is a visual medium - of course they used a visual cue to communicate the scene. If anyone literally thinks the snap was literally needed, that person needs help.
