At least it goes to good things, like state highways that are really just ferry lines (really, ferry routes on Washington State Ferries literally have a state highway classification... another fun fact!) Ghost7729 people visit Washington more, about 40 million people visit Seattle alone and the surrounding counties from out of state not to mention people who only see the mountains of other places. Only about 30 million people visit all of Oregon in a year.
Noob Gaming 26.6 million single individuals visit Oregon and 13.3 million groups yearly, very few people go somewhere other than Seattle and if you had actually read that statistic correctly you would know that 39.9 million people per year visit Seattle and the surrounding country. Its estimated that Bend oregon alone receives 20,000 daily tourists and this is one of our smaller cities. If I average the total group statistic with 3 people per group (because at minimum it has to be two), then our total tourists per year is 66.5 million people.
This also makes sense because in the episode “Please Homer Don’t Hammer ‘Em”, the arcade game Polybius appears briefly, and was only found in Portland, Oregon in 1981
Also, in the episode where the school sells recycling for money in "The Old Man and Lisa." I did some research and found that the only two states who would buy recycling in the 1990s were Mississippi and Oregon. That further proves the theory. Please read this matpat.
Another note: In one of the episodes lisa said "the old union pacific doesn't come by here much anymore" and fun fact: the union pacific runs west of the missisippi river
I was born in Springfield so it was common knowledge growing up that the Simpsons were based off it. It is really cool to see you figure that out though.
In the new Simpson’s episode “Marge The Lumberjill”, Homer goes to a bar and someone asks him where he is from. Homer replies with Springfield and then the man says “The one in Oregon?” And Homer replies with “I don’t know.” This is probably the biggest clue.
but if post-Season 9 Simpsons is non-canonical, and if the impossibility of Springfield's location is still a running gag, it wouldn't be a clue to anything

Hello mat pat! The location can be found in one episode. When Bart goes to a behavioral correction camp in state, Homer accidentally destroyed the birthplace of Matt greoning, which is in Portland. But this is valid too. Plus, there is nothing saying it’s “in-state” but it does not mention any leaving states. Just wanted to let you know
It’s not tricky at all! The creator Matt Groening is from Portland, Oregon, and they have a mural in downtown Springfield, Oregon that was commemorated by people who worked on The Simpsons! Matt also said that it’s based on Springfield, Oregon. There’s also tons of murals of the characters around Springfield and Eugene!
Yeah, I live in Springfield. Also, there’s a paper factory in the center of Springfield which constantly blows smoke, in resemblance to the nuclear plant from the TV show.
Just to say, the subtitle is completely different to what he’s saying. MatPat: that parts obvious Subtitles: thats obvious parties And yes, I use subtitles. Fight me.
Okay, so in the Family Guy crossover, they arrived at Springfield. The Griffins live in Rhode Island and the Simpsons live in Oregon. That means to escape some controversy they went across the entirety of the US.
Just want to mention that there’s an episode where Hank Hill from “King of the Hill” goes to Springfield and says “We drove 2000 miles for this?!?” If you measure the distance between Springfield, Oregon and Dallas, Texas (the Area where Arlen is supposedly be near), it is 2030 miles, almost the exact same distance Hank claims to have traveled.
I just finished watching the ENTIRETY of The Simpsons. All 33 seasons. And, since this was the video that first got me interested in anything Simpsons-related, I just had to go back to it after I had finished. And all the while I was looking out for times they disproved this! And, apart from when characters were joking, it all seemed pretty in line with this theory. And hey, in one of the episodes (about season 30-ish I think?) they go to Portland, Oregon and make a joke about all the streets that share names with people The Simpsons know. So yeah, canon. Thanks for this video, MatPat. And if anyone from The Simpsons ever possibly sees this - thank you for a great few years.
Fun fact: despite being named as “non canonical” the later seasons of The Simpsons, does indeed support the idea of Springfield being in/near Oregon, seeing as in episode 7 of season 24, Hippies from Portland Oregon could move to Springfield Oregon in less than a day, and the real world drive is only an hour long
this was my very first introduction to matpat. wow thank you for the five years of memories to team theory all of you. matpat, stephanie, and the rest of the crew and this community thank you all so much
I thought that it was in Canada because on Homer's driver's license it says Springfield,NT and if you didn't know NT is an abbreviation for Northern Territories which is another name for Canada
The simpsons live in Oregon The entire gravity falls series takes place in Oregon Both shows are connected to rick and Morty Both shows are owned by disney HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM Hmmmmmmm
That episode is where I first heard the word "Albuquerque" when I was a child. I was born in Ireland in the 90s so this is how I learnt the names of a lot of American towns and cities. I still remember hearing "It's hot in Topeka" and I had no clue Topeka was even a place back then XD
Homer: "Those are Southwestern ingredients. Mango-lime salsa? That's the kind of bold flavor they enjoy in... *ALBUQUERQUE!* " Also Homer: "...There's a NEW Mexico?"
As TheRealJims pointed out, there are a lot of issues with this theory. 1. Springfield was a Battleground in the civil war, with neighboring Shelbyville being in a Confederate State. Oregon was barely a state at the time and was nowhere near the front lines. 2. Several of the historical episodes around Jebidiah Springfield portray the town as being settled and founded in the late 1700s, way too early for Oregon. 3. Springfield is in a state that allows the Electric Chair or at least DID at some point(every depiction of execution uses it), but Oregon never used the chair. 4. The VERY same episode he got the tax info from to solve the Oregon-Washington issue also has a scene where they point to Springfield on a map. We don't see where it is exactly, but it's definitely not on either coast.
(He believes the Illinois Theory, which fits all this quite well. It also fits the heavy winters depicted multiple times and the rust belt economic issues shown in a couple episodes)
I love how he takes so long with the final clue when you could just look at the map of all nuclear reactors in the USA and see there is none is Washington and one right next to the ocean in Oregon.
He could've started with "The city is close to the ocean" and he could've eliminated all mid-states, then mention the the radio zone thing and he would've been left with only 3 or 4 states right off the bat.... this guy
If you look at the episode "Bart Star", you will find a King of the Hill reference in the show where Hank says how the trip to the football game in Springfield was 2,000 miles. Since Arlen in the King of the Hill world is based on the real city Arlington, you will find that Arlington (or Arlen) is basically 2,000 miles from Oregon on a map, further proving Matpat's theory. Here's a link to that specific part: ruclips.net/video/nMDOfgDotd4/видео.html
MightyMatthewGaming also missing the Terwilliger curves in Portland (sideshow bobs full name is Bob Terwilliger) as well as Springfield/Eugene being Springfield/Shelbyville
in family guy season 13 episode 1 (Crossover Episode between Simpsons and Family Guy), it is stated that they live an hour and a half away from each other, and family guy lives in Rhode island. So it's impossible that it's in Oregon... We also see them driving from Rhode Island to Oregon. And since it takes about 47 hours and 26 minutes (Driving Time) from RI to OR. That pretty much disproves matpat's theory. I hope he makes part 2
@@milk-pk4xk This is definitely a valid reason for possibly disproving MatPat's theory, but one thing you want to keep in mind is that one of his rules said that only seasons 1-9 are going to be used because the show changed executive producers. If you were to go by this, then this episode would be considered non canonical. Of course you do not need to and you can still work with the information.
Apart from the donut it’s pretty boring. I live in Christchurch and have been through Springfield a couple times on the way to skiing. The first time we took a photo with the donut, the other times we just stopped to go toilet. I thought it was really cool that it was called Springfield when I was younger then I learnt there are TONS of towns around the world called Springfield. Fun fact: the donut was put up as promotion for the Simpson movie and at one point an arsonist lit it on fire.

It wouldn't be an exclusive reference, though. Consider the Knoxville road trip. Bart has a fake driver's license, but not a fake passport. In order to drive from Alaska to Tennessee, he should have to pass through Canada.
I’ve grown up in Oregon, very close to Springfield Oregon and always thought that it was funny that it shared the same name as the Simpsons town. But I thought there’s no way it was actually related. No one cares about Oregon. My mind was just blown. That is so awesome.
@@kerrim2715 It's not. There's a mural in Oregon dedicated tp the simpsons and almost everyone here knows it comes from here. Not trying to start an argument.

mike johnston Bob Regardless New Mexico is still landlocked.
I’m glad you brought up the mural, but this video was released seven years ago, before Matt Groening said anything about where it’s set
Oh wait my bad you were right

Episode 1998 it's disproved
Matt groening is from Eugene Oregon, the town next to Eugene, is Springfield…boom video over lol
Fun fact: despite being named as “non canonical” the later seasons of The Simpsons, does indeed support the idea of Springfield being in/near Oregon, seeing as in episode 7 of season 24, Hippies from Portland Oregon could move to Springfield Oregon in less than a day, and the real world drive is only an hour long
True there are a LOT of hippies that live here.
the drive is usually 2 hours cause traffic on the highway to portland is always mental

And Shelbyville (Springfield’s rival town) is LITERALLY Eugene. They both hate each other, and Eugene has a lot more stuff, like the football stadium.
Me: Idaho isn’t landlocked.
Also Me (and maybe possibly Homer): Oooh Canada exists.
What's a Canada
Fun fact: The isotopes team used in the Simpsons is also a legitimate baseball team in New Mexico
That episode is where I first heard the word "Albuquerque" when I was a child.
I was born in Ireland in the 90s so this is how I learnt the names of a lot of American towns and cities.
I still remember hearing "It's hot in Topeka" and I had no clue Topeka was even a place back then XD
yea it was in better call saul to
The Albuquerque Isotopes got their team name from the Simpsons. They used to be called the Calgary Cannons before they relocated to New Mexico.
Homer: "Those are Southwestern ingredients. Mango-lime salsa? That's the kind of bold flavor they enjoy in... *ALBUQUERQUE!* "
Also Homer: "...There's a NEW Mexico?"

Gudetama 101 gravity falls is in Oregon lol
Ruby Pearl agreed #gravityfallsforlife
Where is it then? Look, he prob tried really hard, and of course it can't be in any state.
@@craziepeopleitalinor23fkjf9g Real Jims says Illinois
The creator of the show LITERALLY confirmed this, and there are way more evidence pointing toward Oregon than not Oregon...
Most importantly to me.... the creator intended it to be Oregon, and the creator is the only thing that matters.
It's Oregon.

Holy crap you madlad
Of course you do not need to and you can still work with the information.

if we write how he pronunced "el Viaje Misterioso De Nuestro homer" he said:
El Viejei Misteriousou de Nuestrou Homer
"We can't use the movie as reference"
Uses the movie as a reference 5 minutes later
It wouldn't be an exclusive reference, though. Consider the Knoxville road trip. Bart has a fake driver's license, but not a fake passport. In order to drive from Alaska to Tennessee, he should have to pass through Canada.
Also it couldn't be Washington because there's an episode where Lisa wins a trip to Washington and none of them had been there before.
