How to install NEW PS4 Hard Drive (500GB to 2 TB) Upgrade Tutorial 2019!

In this video, I show you how to install and upgrade your PS4 hard drive. This will fit hard drives from 500 GB to 2 TB. This is a step by step guide for the year 2019!
The firmware from playstation downloads is version 6.20 in the video. No matter what you see in the video, download the latest version to insure your PS4 ruins correctly.
Don't be intimated by installing a new PS4 hard drive, the end result is worth it and storage these days is cheap!

This will "initialize ps4 reinstall system software" to the orignal state of the PS4.
Official instructions from Playstation Listed Below!
"Perform a New Installation of the System Software
This procedure is for initializing your PS4™ system and performing a new installation of the system software, such as for when you replace the hard disk drive.
Be careful when using an update file for reinstallation. All users and all data will be deleted.
The following things are needed to perform the update:
PlayStation®4 system
Computer connected to the Internet
USB storage device, such as a USB* flash drive
There must be approximately 1.1 GB of free space.
On the USB storage device, create folders for saving the update file.
Using a computer, create a folder named "PS4". Inside that folder, create another folder named "UPDATE".
PC Update
Download the update file, and save it in the "UPDATE" folder you created in step 1.
Save the file with the file name "PS4UPDATE.PUP".
Download Now Click to start the download.
Turn off the power of your PS4™ system completely.
Check that the power indicator is not lit. If the power indicator is lit up in orange, press the power button on the PS4™ system for at least 7 seconds (until the system beeps a second time).
Connect the USB storage device to your PS4™ system, and then press the power button for at least 7 seconds.
The PS4™ system starts in safe mode.
Select [Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)].
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
If your PS4™ system does not recognize the update file, check that the folder names and file name are correct. Enter the folder names and file name in single-byte characters using uppercase letters." ...

TheCrownOfNoah You would have to backup your Saved Data and Gallery onto another USB storage and any games will be deleted, they will have to be reinstalled again once you replace your hard drive

Update: to download the file, Sony changed the layout of the website or it. They have two links now, “Download PS4 Update file” and right below it, “Download PS4 reinstallation file” make sure to click the reinstallation file and not the other.

Hooah! Just did this to my kids PS4 Slim. Used Western Digital Blue 2TB 2.5 drive work flawlessly. Your video is probly the best I've seen on how to do this, granted it's not hard but great quality instructions make a big difference going through with it.

Everything is spot on! I did this twice. Once with switching to 2 TB (2.5” one) and the second time was with the nyko data bank. Got a 4 TB separately with that (3.5” one). Luckily my nyko data bank can hold a 3.5” and a 2.5” hard drive. You would just have to press the button to switch to hard drives. Make sure red light matches to 2.5 or 3.5 as it says on the front of the nyko data bank. Make sure to only do that when the PS4 is completely turned off and while it’s plugged in. Then you turn the PS4 to the desired hard drive you want to start up. This only works for the original model of the PS4. I am unsure if the slim or pro has any nyko data banks for their models. This was before external drive support was added by Sony. Might as well keep what I have right now as long as it’s maintained

I just did the upgrade. While access to my hard drive is different, it wasn't hard to figure out. The rest was very easy. The system is updating the games and everything now. Thanks a bunch!

Will this solve the issue of my PS4 not starting properly? Every single time I boot up my PS4 it performs a storage status check and never goes to the main menu. It has been over 3 weeks now and this is driving me insane.

lukas yes. It fixed the problem. All you need is an HDD (or SSD) to replace the one in your PS4 which are crap, a 1.1GB flash drive and your set mate. It’s very easy.

also, your flash storage has to be formatted in fat32 since ps4 cant read the NTFS format

THANKS TIM i was literally factory resetting my ps4 every day but I just followed along to your video and although my ps4 is shaped a little different than yours it was still very obvious what parts were what and what I had to do. now i have a hard drive twice as big as original and hopefully i won't be having that problem anymore! all my fingers crossed.
Thanks for the great tutorial I thought it was going to be hard since i'm not tech savvy but it was pretty easy. The only thing i messed up on was transferring my save data. I copied it instead of backing it up and was freaking out that I'd lost everything but thankfully my old drive wasn't entirely dead so I could back up my saves. Again thank you.
How do you go about transferring saved data? I'm not tech savvy either, like at all. I've got a ton of sentimental stuff on my PS4. My son started playing Plants Vs Zombies when he was two, right when I got the PS4 and I'd be really bummed out to lose all of that data.

It worked like a champ and didn't take long at all. This was an excellent tutorial and now my PS4 runs about as fast as my PS5. The only thing I did a little different is install a 2 TB SSD hard drive in mine so it moves a lot faster. I will definitely recommend your videos.

If you want to transfer your saved games, profiles etc., do a backup (from backup & restore option on the ps4 settings) to a USB external drive, before replacing the hard disk.
After replacing the hard disk and installing the system software, restore the backup from the same menu.
How much space would I need on the external drive
@@NijahsLover You can check how much storage is being currently used on the existing hard drive and use an external which has as much space or more. Make sure that the external is empty.
When operating the thumb stick, always make sure you turn it the wrong way for the initial push. And only then can you go ahead and turn it correctly.
That's just standard practice for optimal experience.

worked a treat mate thanks heaps. turned out my disk drive ribbon cable was unplugged causing me to get the error su-42118-6

So my data got corrupted and my ps4 went into a safe mode loop. Bought a new harddrive and used this video as a guide. My ps4 is in the factory reset menu rn and I hope to god i will never have anymore problems. Thx for this video bro
What about backing up everything that you already have on your ps4?
Copy it too the cloud or another flash drive.
Im not too worried about backing everything up. I normally play COD WW2, but now I play Division 2.
If you have a subscription to Psn you can just upload to the cloud. Otherwise use a usb zip

You cant back up using an external hard drive? It has to be a flash drive? I just bought an external hard drive and it's only letting me use it as extended storage it wont read it as a USB storage device when I try to back everything up 😩 its 1tb I was excited to do this today

Fixed my console cheers, didn’t want to replace it as waiting to get a ps5 noticed everything loading quicker as well
It worked for me until I connected the USB to the ps4 and said it couldn’t access the update file
You have to make the folders in order PS4 folder first on your external hard drive then add an UPDATE folder in the ps4 folder then add the sofware file in the update folder

I'm confused why do you need to go on Playstation to download the Playstation update when you can just update the PlayStation 4 or is that something totally different
because when you put the new hard rive in it will be blank. you have to put the running system on a usb stick so the new hard drive can download it to make the ps4 begin running.

I’m what you young people might call a Noob (but I’m not old enough to be a boomer). The PS4 is my kids’. Is there a need to backup the original HDD? What about things like the stuff they have bought on Fortnite, and progress on games? Is that all saved on servers somewhere?
When I get to the Safe Mode, it constantly tells me it can't upload the update file, even though I downloaded it a couple hours before I tried this. Latest file and everything, yet it won't get uploaded.

Download it using internet explorer or edge , i think you were using chrome , chrome tends to corrupt files , it did the same for me

Because like a computer needs the Windows OS to do anything on it. The ps4 needs that update to install the ps4 OS.

Thanks to your video, I finally decided to upgrade my PS4 500 GB HD to a 2TB SSD. Amazon has the Seagate FireCuda 2TB Solid State Hybrid Drive Performance SSHD - 2.5 Inch SATA 6GB/s for $64.99. Anyway, it's working very well. The lastest PS4 update download is 6.72..that is as of 10/4/2019.

@@almalakii96 What I think happened to you is that you had file extensions hidden. That is why you didn't see the .pup after the file name but it really was there.
