Okay I didn't see any comments like this one but basically if you want to do it when you first buy your ps4 follow this guys tutorial But if you have already bought games read this… First get a flash drive(separate from the drive you'll but the update in, so you'll need two) go to your ps4 and plug in that flash drive (btw I would get like a 10 gig just in case) once you plug in your flash drive go to the settings on ps4 and “application saved data management” press X on the saved data in system storage tab…the press copy to USB Storage Device…now from here you must go through each game and select both of the little squares to save the data to the flash drive so when you replace the hard drive you have all your game saves… once you've replaced the hard drive simply go back to the application saved data management setting and select the “saved data on USB Storage device” (once you plug in the usb with your saves) and go through the process of copying all your saved to the drive

GREAT vid.... Very helpful to ppl who are not tech(computer) literate; so, applaud you on this. Not easy making vids, let alone, vids of this genre👍🏻😁. Okay, did anyone else pick this up....when he said it? Hmm..... 10:02 funny how 559mb “magically” became 859mb😉 (making vids aren’t as easy as ppl think, LOL). Congrats on a very popular vid. Cheers✌🏼
Please note if you're trying to do this today that you shouldn't download the oldest update. You need to download the newest version of the update which will require 900MB. All of the folders NEED FO BE UPPERCASE too, and this is absolutely vital. If the update is written in lower case, you run the risk of bricking the system. Also, for those whom are worried about their game saves, PlayStation Plus allows for 10GB of online storage.
Great video, thanks for your help! It might've been worth mentioning that USB's need to be formatted for FAT32 or exFAT via a PC for a ps4 to read them. Not sure if this includes updating the System Software as well, but the ps4 definitely won't read a USB to backup game save data unless it's properly formatted.
You might be able to actually save a few $$$ if you buy an external (usually cheaper than SSD internal) and open up the casing and slide the HDD in the caddy.
Used a 1 gb flash drive. Tried to download OS about 6 times (3times grabbing the wrong file). Finally worked when I put the flash drive in the right hand side USB port. I was about to give up and buy a new thumb drive, but it worked after that. No idea if that is a thing, but good luck all the same. Thanks for the video!
Thanks a lot dude, I will be getting a ps4 soon and I don't think 500gb is enough for all of my games, So now when I get it I will know exactly where to go for when I replace my hard drive!
This is not meant to be a fanboy comment but this makes me smile at my Wii U because all I need to do is plug in a usb hdd. It's not gonna change my mind about wanting a PS4 though. Nintendo has a lot of work to do on the Wii U. Now excuse me while I sell my arse on the street for a PS4. ^_^
***** I understand what you said. Better hdd improve loading. Actually if you get a faster external hdd it should. Especially with the Wii U and it's slow internal storage. The hdd i have improved lots of speeds. Granted they shouldn't be that slow to begin with but still it has even vastly improved my download speeds.
you have to specify that before doing this you have to deactivate your PSN account otherwise when you change your hard drive it Will say that your account is another ps4
I no lots of videos of hard drive upgrades I heard alot of people complaining about losing all data but what to do if u want to keep everything from old hard drive is to get a matching size hard drive that ps4 has in it go to system than go back up it may take a few hours to back up when finished putting the new hard drive in u go to system n hit restore n everything would be like how it was when last played it
3 yrs later, right now i have a 500 gb ps4 and just ran out of space, no nothing about this tech stuff, but thank you Marc The Geek for making the tutorial easy and simple : )
That's not right at all, Creepycactus1... Your saves are stored on your hard drive, however, they can be uploaded to the cloud(Basically, they get saved on PlayStation's servers as well) - The game loads from your hard drive, including the save data.
Just ordered the 2tb one you got linked in here. so sick of wanting to play a game that I had uninstalled for space, but I cant cause psn game updates can take all damn day.
x_Snip3rzzZ_Lif3 x when you do that is the original hard drive games and the ones on the external hd all connected? Like if it were a 1tb internal hd? Or do you have to do something every time you want to play a game that is on the external hd
PS4 is incredible well build user friendly machine. Opening up the HDD is so perfect for this console. It's like a memory card I insert for my PS1 n 2 days. Go download the OS from PlayStation site. Then PS4 folder n inside made UPDATE folder where u put the file. Then the flash drive is good to go. Insert the new HDD u want to install on ur PS4. I suggest u get 2 terabyte HDD 7200RPM one. If u can get 3 terabyte then ur good to go this whole generation. Belive me the HDD fill up pretty quickly if u play a lot of games n dont want to delete the game. I don't want to delete any game becaue of so many update n patch it requires to run the game properly for so many third party games. SONY first party games mostly ur good to go without updating. Bloodborne need some update. All other games update r like maximum 2 to 3 GB. Third party game r the worst. My favorite game Doom needed to install 50GB plus update to run the game perfectly. Destiny is the same. God of war, Red Dead Redemption 2, Spiderman etc game r the one needed almost no update. Only Red Dead 2 need some basic update but installing that game might take u 2 hours. Thisbis why I don't want to delete any games. Update ur 500gb HDD to maximum 3 terabyte if possible. If u can get that much then atleat update 1 terabyte then purchase a 2 to 3 terabyte portable. U can use it other purposes also. Basically u need atleast 2 terabyte HDD to play most games without any delete to make way for other games. I have 1.5 portable n 2 terabyte inside.
If you get an error saying your flash/usb drive isn't formatted correctly, despite formatting it to those standards, try a different flash/usb drive. I kept getting errors on one of mine, but changed to another drive and it worked perfectly. And now I'm immersed in my PS4
if i have a hard drive that is like broken because it was glitching and i automatically got to safe mode and i only can choose option 7 and put a usb in the ps4 with the update but it wont recognize it, will a upgrade help me? like than i can reinstall the system software and can finally play after 2 months?
This helped me lot! Thanks man.. Hard drive change took about 5mins, and software little bit longer, cuz i tried to download wrong version first. But finally it worked! 2017, and im not gonna buy ps4pro. Just wait when my original ps4 dies. Then maybe.
Will doing this delete the memory of the games I have while using the old HardDrive? Because I'd prefer to keep my memory of those games I've completed.
Just use a seperate USB to transfer your saves to the USB then connect it back after you do all of this in the video and transfer the saves back into the ps4
The other day someone said they put their memory on the Online Storage and used it to get it back. Afterwards. Should I put it on both the Online Storage and a USB? And I meant, did you try what happens in this video. Did that work?
Yeah you should try putting it in on both if you want. I have not tried what happened in the video but i know it's the correct way of changing your hard drive as Sony stated. I will be changing my hard drive next month.
Hey that video really helped I've also upgraded my ps4 hard drive to 1TB and I've never regretted it I now plan to do same with PS3 I also convert the old hard drives as well it costs $20 AUD to do so and it costs only $109 AUD to buy the 1TB hard drives so much apreciated for ur video on how to upgrade I've told friends and family about it they now do it swell
My Ps4 is no longer working because of the 2.51 update a few months ago i was told if the hard drive is messed up if i used these steps will it work because i do not want to pay sony 170 dollars ?
+Marc The Geek You can get a Nyko Data Bank and Get a 3.5 Hard Drive to help support it, but the down side is, It needs a power source to operate. I'd recommend just keeping everything internal not external.
+Brad Jimenez a PS4 can handle a 6TB drive, however they are very slow anything above a 2TB will be slower then a the normal stock HDD. Once I find the source I will give you the link about it. +Mark the Geek I don't know where you get half your information from your clearly not a idiot, because you know the different between a a normal HDD and SDD and you can upgrade a PS4's HDD, but your knowledge of the PS4 is just wrong, I thought someone of your caliber would know alot more.
I bought a ps4 for a hundred bucks with a dying hard drive. This tutorial not only saved me money but assisted me into upgrading the space and it was so easy. Just wanted to say thanks.
@@Xc10 nope. U just take the new hard drive outta the package and put it right in the ps4. Wash ur hands bf u do this. The only time u need a pc/laptop is when u downlowd the system update from the playstation website. You download the update. Put ur usb in. Make sure u format the usb to fat32 i believe if it isnt already. Find the downloaded update in My Computer/downloads. Move it to the usb by dragging the file over to it. Once its on the usb, plug it into one of the usb ports on the front of the ps4. From that point, just follow this video's instructions. Look, i AM NOT a tech guy AT ALL. I just did exactly wut this vid told me and it worked. If youre not sure how to reformat a usb, just look up reformatting usb on google. Pretty simple. I used a memorex 16gb usb i picked up from target for $8. Hope this helped and good luck!
i already upgrade to a 2 TB harddrive but i forgot to upload one of my games to the online storage so i lost it, is it safe to just place my 500 GB harddrive in my ps4 and upload the game to my online storage and then place my 2TB harddrive back in?
Just to confirm you didn't need to redo everything yeah? You just switched the hard drives to get what you needed without the update and initializing and so on. Just a quick switch? Cause I've got stuff on my old hard drive I need to get
Thanks for the tutorial. It's a pretty easy process. At first I didn't copy the UPDATE folder into the PS4 folder(separate folders)and it wasn't working. I was trying a bunch of things. I saw some guys that said you have to use FAT 32 with 4 byte sectors. I am not sure if that was the key for me. I just loaded a 2 terabyte Seagate drive. The only other tricky part was the Seagate drive is a bit thinner than the default drive so it was kind of tricky to get the screws in. Playstation should make the PS4 so you can add a secondary drive rather than go through all the drama of backing up your data, pulling the cover off, copying the update file, reinstalling, ect.
God damn I was thinking the same. I'm not one bit computer savvy and its getting irritating having to delete games every time to make room for others. Like I can go to google and search....... idk whats the state of California and all but when comes to downloading, ip address ppos, ueis over what ever you might as well be talking to me in japanese.
I watch hundreds of how to videos because I choose to do my own stuff rather than pay to have it done. I have to tell you that your video was THE most instructional I have ever watched thank you for posting this. oh if you ever play dcuo hero side my main is groundzero43
Thanks for the tutorial, one of the reasons i always hesitated about getting a ps4 is the hard drive space. i always heard that replacing the hard drive was easy but i was still scared i would fuck it up, now i know how simple it really is.
everyone should know that if you have model CUH-1215A the hdd tray is different but still has same screw that has been moved to the front and center instead of the side and the tray is a solid tray instead of being full of holes like this one.
Thax man so much for this video. I just upgraded my hard drive and kept getting errors. I was downloading the update instead of the full software. Thax again.
I have noticed a quirk that you might not experience but I did. IF you are using anything but that really short PS4 cable to connect your controller to the PS4 console you night not get a reaction when you restart and press the PS4 button. I first used a long cable that works just fine when gaming but for this reimaging to a new hard drive the PS4 just straight up did not like this longer cable. I switched to the short PS$ cable that came with the PS$ and the orange light came on immediately and all expected screens appeared and worked as expected. I just wanted to put that out here just in case anyone had that problem. So if you have a white indicator when you are doing the PS4 restart where it gives you the list of options that let you complete the install of the PS4 operating system then change cables. If the PS4 does not like the cable it gives you that white indicator light and won't invoke that start up menu screen you need to continue the OS install.
hey guys a FYI if you search for a external portable hard drive [those small passport things] they are normally cheaper and after you take the hard drive out you can put the old PS4 drive in the case works well for a extra drive
Oh! i'm not sure if it was in the video now that i'm done, but if anyone is having trouble with the flash drive not working it needs to me formatted to exFAT. worked great for me.
if anyone of you guys had trouble figuring out how to download the 800MB version you have to on the link on the website that says "Do you want to perform a fresh install of the full system software? If so then click here". when you click on that link under the first download link it will take you almost to the bottom of the page and then all you have to do s scroll down a little more then the 800MB link is there to download
Great video b/c i'm not very technical ( read allways a bit insecure with new things i do ) very clear how to do it step my step......will be very helpfull when i recieve my 2Tb hdd tomorrow. Many thanks Marc Peace out
You got to formatt the usb stick before adding the firmware and your best bet is use an already installed usb extended storage transfer all applications and data after that install the new hard drive and firmware after that transfer all from usb extended storage and use empty exteension for storage or unplugged cause not really needed with new ps4 1.5 TB
Here's the HGTS 1TB 2.5 Hard Drive: USA: amzn.to/1TKCHHf

this is for saving the games or just your data?
+Dan Patterson thanks. Can i just redownload them from the playstation store thru the cloud?

My Ps4 is no longer working because of the 2.51 update a few months ago i was told if the hard drive is messed up if i used these steps will it work because i do not want to pay sony 170 dollars ?
nigel blackett same
Still holds up, thanks for the video!
Thank you for helping me sort my PlayStation out mate had a place offer me £80 to fix it and u just helped me sort it out for £25 👍🏻
Hey Mark, do you know if the PS4 will be able to support 6TB of storage? Or will it only support 1TB?
No, it will only support up to 2TB. And besides I don't think there's a 2.5 Hard Drive at 6Gb.
+Marc The Geek You can get a Nyko Data Bank and Get a 3.5 Hard Drive to help support it, but the down side is, It needs a power source to operate. I'd recommend just keeping everything internal not external.
Gosh, the memory these games take up now a days I'd just crazy 😂
+PSN Shworles The Nyko Databank can't handle 3.5" hard drives over 2TB. Might as well just get a 2.5" 2TB and update like this.
At 3:36 he says ps3
+mincepieso1 So?
So Mr turtle man thing i say i was just pointing it out like a little bug on a rug
+Blueturtle210 But thats not a Ps3.
Don't be petty
yep! that confused me
My ps4 isn't recognizing my flash drive what should I do?
I bought a ps4 for a hundred bucks with a dying hard drive. This tutorial not only saved me money but assisted me into upgrading the space and it was so easy. Just wanted to say thanks.
Thank you so much for this video. Finally got my ps4 fixed thanx to your instructions. Keep up the good work!
Richard Zavala how do you do it with the hard drive and PS4 do you hook them both up to the computer
How do I transfer data from the old hard drive to the new one?
you can't
@@2AZ_NATE yes you can
Lol it literally says in settings "transfer data from another ps4"
i already upgrade to a 2 TB harddrive but i forgot to upload one of my games to the online storage so i lost it, is it safe to just place my 500 GB harddrive in my ps4 and upload the game to my online storage and then place my 2TB harddrive back in?
yes you could just do the same thing said in the tutorial.
eh? Can you not redownload the game from the store?
how did it turn out for you? did it work?
Raider23Mike yeah it worked :)
Just to confirm you didn't need to redo everything yeah? You just switched the hard drives to get what you needed without the update and initializing and so on. Just a quick switch? Cause I've got stuff on my old hard drive I need to get
Won't you lose all the gameplay that you had on the 500gb hard drive?
BigHappyDevil thanks bro
BigHappyDevil how do u back up?
Leroy Oj I believe you can do this via usb or through playstation+
Thank you so much, this is the only video that explains this clearly.

3:38 " back to the PlayStation 3"
Hey Marc can I send my ps4 to you and you do it for me.?
God damn I was thinking the same. I'm not one bit computer savvy and its getting irritating having to delete games every time to make room for others. Like I can go to google and search....... idk whats the state of California and all but when comes to downloading, ip address ppos, ueis over what ever you might as well be talking to me in japanese.
+SuperGalaxyDaiGurren dude save your money you can easily do it yourself for free it's not hard at all
I did mines this morning on my 1st attempt it's very easy just make sure you keep track of every screw you take out & you should be good to go
Jay H how about all those stuff on the computer, with all the folder and downloading and stuff
"Windows or PC".. wait what, lol
thanks m8 for the tutorial, did the hard drive upgrade today. It works lika a charm
I watch hundreds of how to videos because I choose to do my own stuff rather than pay to have it done. I have to tell you that your video was THE most instructional I have ever watched thank you for posting this. oh if you ever play dcuo hero side my main is groundzero43
lol u sad "this works on windows and pc" ,has anyone else realized this?
+Lightning Power Gaming yes
U need to use a windoes desktop u thik
Will this work with an SSD?
Very good video your the only one that explained it in detail.
I just wanted to say u are very good at teaching on youtube u are very detailed make like very easy
To be honest it's just that this is very easy this should take about a hour or less
Thax man so much for this video. I just upgraded my hard drive and kept getting errors. I was downloading the update instead of the full software. Thax again.
Thanks! Even a year later this helped a bunch!
Thanks for your help dude. I've done this tonight. Great video 👍🏼
Make sure you back up your old hard drive first so to can install it on the new one. He forgot to mention that important part.
You were very helpful i changed my 500gb hdd with an 1tb shdd. It was successful and i thank you for it.👍👍👍
10:10 thank you for the reminder about needing the larger (800+ MB) file. I was tearing out my (nonexistent) hair over the CE-30774-1 error
Nice tutorial bro. Easy to understand. Keep it up.
This helped me so much! Your video was awesome bro!
hey guys a FYI if you search for a external portable hard drive [those small passport things] they are normally cheaper and after you take the hard drive out you can put the old PS4 drive in the case works well for a extra drive
I just successfully completed this. Thanks for the tutorial great video 👍🏽
wonderful video. I just used this to install my new HDD. Thank you.
Oh! i'm not sure if it was in the video now that i'm done, but if anyone is having trouble with the flash drive not working it needs to me formatted to exFAT. worked great for me.
Great video buddy, very easy indeed.i installed a brand new 2TB samsung HD using this video. Thanks buddy.
Nice easy to follow simple guide cheers. Quickest mod i've ever done. Cheers
if anyone of you guys had trouble figuring out how to download the 800MB version you have to on the link on the website that says "Do you want to perform a fresh install of the full system software? If so then click here". when you click on that link under the first download link it will take you almost to the bottom of the page and then all you have to do s scroll down a little more then the 800MB link is there to download
Perfect video, exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
Thank you so much for the detailed guide, it helped me successfully complete the upgrade.

Thanks, man! This was super helpful! Thumbs up for sure!
Good instructions you earned a new subscriber
you could purchase 2TB PS4 hard drive for PS4 from Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B00Y0P80C6 , which has a good feedback and 3 years warranty.
