    1. Begin with Leg Curls Warmup(either for Hamstring/Quad)
    2. After having a pump, go to a squat or leg press machine. Start with Low weight and gradually increase when 7th rep becomes too easy.
    3. Apply the above into a circuit exercise.
    4. Repeat.

      @@gregorioperoni9311 I normally do. If you notice your hamstring pump fading, light RDLs focusing on contraction usually does the trick.
      But always remember to be slow and controlled. Play with the stretch and with time you can go deeper.

      Is safe train legs 3 times per week?

      @@chEs9i my routine is one day lower body and the next day upper body. With one rest day.
      If your a total beginner then it might take a few weeks to adjust. But remember to always start light and focus on contacting the muscle.
      For me what worked is one leg weightless lunge where the other leg is on a bench. Followed leg extensions.

      Can RDL be replaced with heavy goodmornings? I can't go heavy on RDL because I still try to fix my pelvic tilt that causes my lowerback to work more than my hammies in any DL. Currently I start with heavy 6-8 squats into 8-12 range goodmornings.

    As an older bloke still training, I like direct , no-nonsense videos from people who have been around the block a bit and know their stuff. JM ticks all the boxes for me. No frills, no BS, just experience and hard graft. What’s not to like? Kind regards from the UK.

    I always started with squats to be "fresh". Man I did some leg curls before anything else today and the squats really felt so good. John is still making a difference from wherever he is.

    I'd recommend everyone to try doing hamstrings before squats. It was a total game changer for me.

      And what if one is training the squat for strength? Are you sure the leg curls are not affecting the strength of the the legs and therefore leading to less max weight on the squat afterwards?

    15 years ago when I first got Arnold's encyclopedia I read "Leg training simply must be brutal, to be effective." and I've never forgotten it.
    You can always tell if someone is the real deal or not by how hard they go on leg day.

    I agree with the training really hard on legs. I never understood how someone would do a Legs and Delts or Arms day. I typically have just enough energy to get the hell out of the gym after my last leg set, let alone work another body part

      Agree. I split my workouts into upper/lower/arms days, and legs days are those I drag the most. I train all lower body muscles in the same day so I’m always totally exhausted afterwards. Some people maybe able to get away with training legs with other body parts, if they train legs at least twice a week, or if they split quad/calves and glutes/hams in two different sessions.

      not everyone is training to bodybuild...or for hypertrophy....if you are training for function instead of aesthetics....I trained for rugby and now rowing....don't need a lot more mass for aerobic activities...you need strength...harder to drag around extra mass in endurance/aerobic activities......you tire out way quicker....and thus less effective.....hence you train the full body....still good to get tips from experts though....You are never just using one muscle playing sports...so why would you train that way....aesthetics mean zilch in sports....outside of bodybuilding......Don't want to look like Tarzan and play like Jane.....

      @@TheTehrancarroll As someone who taught snowsports for 11 years, I would somewhat disagree. If you take the concept of hypertrophy out of the gym, it’s good for joint and muscle health.
      I snowboarded at a very lean and light build for most of my career, and even though I felt strong I would still be pretty torn up the first few weeks of the season.
      Later I got into powerlifting and put on about 20kg, I thought this would negatively effect my snowboarding. It did just the opposite. The forces applied when snowboarding were never enough to actually challenge my body anymore. After that I never felt sore or fatigued from snowboarding anymore. While carrying 20kg more mass.
      Another good example is when I was playing football and we’d do neck strengthening drills before every practice. So essentially neck hypertrophy lol. Extra muscle is sometimes an extra measure to protect your vital parts.
      Like MMA fighters. Some guys can get out of an arm bar attempt because they are strong and flexible.
      Taking “supplements” just to get huge, for the sake of hugeness is another thing, but for some, like John (who is also very brutally strong) that was the name of his game.
      Plus, as a natural athlete, getting big without lifting heavy/for strength isn’t going to work. I’m not talking about skinny ripped. Putting on real quality muscle mass is something you do deliberately, it’s not going to happen because you do sets of 12 instead of 5. When I started strength training is when I started seeing real mass gains.

    I gotta tell ya, there isn't a channel out there that comes close to the knowledge and experience that you demonstrate in your videos. At 52 years old and training for 35 years, your style of training is right on the money with how I train and really hits home. Excellent stuff brother!     Been doing leg curls before squats for a while now and the quality you get on them is amazing. The best part is it doesn’t interfere with the quad work after. When I used to do it the other way around the curls at the end was just trash because I was so toasted from all the quad work.

    Great video, love prioritizing hamstrings or just supersetting squats with leg curls. Also always warm up leg days with a few sets of hip abductors to really get the glutes activaing. Squats feel so much better that way

    Great video! I really learned to love the squat. I got lucky and got a rack before the pandemic hit. Learning proper form took awhile too. The excercise does destroy me for at least 2 days after. I look forward to checking out your calf training video soon. Thanks, Mr. Meadows. 😊

    Jon I always do pulling movements followed with pushing movements! This has helped my joints tremendously! I wish I had known this years ago. I always work opposing muscle groups and my joints thank me for it!

    Funny, my trainer always has me warm up with leg curls before we jump on squats, and I've noticed a huge difference on my lifts and overall leg training. My man mountaindog is the truth !!!!!

    The best part about John is not only is he extremely knowledgeable and one of my favourite you tubers.

      @@Jack278mx Haha I forgot about this comment! RIP John. Yes they actually have grown about an inch and a half or so! I have also increased my squat considerably (A little over 100 lbs) so it may have been a synergistic effect!

      @@tylersaupe1612 I hate how calves are so different from person to person. Look at some one like Eddie Hall - His calves look like massive tree trunks. Yeah he's strong, but it's the way his body is. Then you have pro bodybuilders like Phil Heath. Strong big calves but NOTHING compared to the size of Eddie Hall's. No matter how much weight or training, your calves are pre determined to a point. Obviously you can grow them but bone structure makes a difference.
      I do reps of 460lb on my standing calf machine and 3 45 plates for reps on the seated calf. I do others to...but my legs are genetically small :( Ripped strong looking calves but I hate how small my bone structure is lol

    Years ago I started to begin my squat/ leg days with training hamstrings first. I did so intuitively and later read an article by John on T-Nation. I can confirm that it makes a big difference how your quad training feels. Nowadays I always start with 45 degree back raises to really wake up and warm up the back chain..from hamstrings to glutes to low back..squats and everything to come just feels better.

    John Meadows commented and liked on a appreciation post I did of him on instagram a few years ago. I never thought he would ever do that, let alone see it. I was only 19 at the time and it really inspired me, I needed in my life at the time.
    Being 23 now, going through so much shit and years of battling depression now, I’m finally getting back into the gym and needed to get some refreshing on things. My account has been deleted for a long time and I wish I never did. Knowing this man has passed on it breaks my heart a true good human that’s inspired many has left us. God bless Johns family. I will always remember the Mountain Dog.

    Legs always been my weakness. Been pushing a lot harder last few weeks (helps being back in the gym for legs) trained em Thursday, today's Monday and still painful to crouch down. Definitely found the hard work level! Great advice John, as always.

    Today just so happens to be lower body day, squat focus, and have been implementing the hamstring curls prior to my primary compound lift for a while thanks to Johns programming...       OMG, Hi Mr Meadows, how are you? I'm very happy for having chosen to come to Portugal and visit Lisbon, my dream city, you won't regret it, the weather is excellent as well as the food. The best gym I can recommend is Mr. Big Evolution located in Cascais, it's a very large gym, with everything you need to workout. I workout at Ginásio Fábrica do Fisico, which is an old-school gym, which is right in the city of Lisbon. Hope I was helpful. A friendly hug and best wishes from Lisbon.

I am just another muscle head who loves to lift and planned to be in Portugal since December of 2019. Our trip was cancelled for July 8, 2020, but it is now open to US travelers. Thanks again for the advice! We will check out both gyms.

    did hamstring curls before my squats, an my squats felt so much more powerful and strong, I think everyone needs to do this, going to be my go to from now on

    That first tip is what helped me to get the legs I have today! Hamstrings are super neglected

      Me either! And since I do Hamstrings before squats, I do not have a pulled muscle or an injury in my Hamstrings. The Squat Movement feels better, kinda smooth. Greetz from the fucked up Lockdown Country Germany. GOD WINS!

      Hamstrings are the easiest! All you have to do is sit on the hamstring curl machine and push down. I have great hamstrings. You have to use a lot more effort and risk your knees to have decent quads.

      @@BigBadJerryRogers I was born with great quads, but I didn’t realize how much my hamstrings were lagging until I started using them more. Once they blew up my legs about doubled in size. Not that I’m complaining! But you can never have big enough quads so I try to do an equal amount of both.

    Sore legs for 2 or 3 days is how you know you've trained them properly. I'm a fan of a drop set after the last squat set using a goblet squat in bottom half of the range of motion. It lights up your legs like nothing else.
    Going to try working hamstrings first before squats, thanks!

    Do the hamstrings first! I did powerlifting when I was young. It was that squatting and legpressing. But how good it immeatedly felt when I tried pumping the hamstrings first- just like John says here again!!! Absolutely the best piece of advice ever given to make great leg training🏆💜 Anyone should do it like this 🐺

    Calves to failure is nasty. DOMS get crazy. Especially if the stretch at the top and bottom are both emphasised. Heavy, standing reps on the Smith (with a step underneath) and light reps on seated machine.
