Our 15 year old English springer spaniel (who we lost last month 😢) exhibited all of these traits! The grass eating thing was an initial worry, however the vet said most dogs eat grass because they like it! One of the endearing things when she ate grass, was the immense care she took in selecting only the greenest and tenderest shoots! High class puppy she was indeed and very sadly missed!

My job requires me to knock on doors and talk to people (NOT sales). My favorite part of the job is meeting new dogs! Recently, I met someone in their driveway and they were surrounded by their six dogs. One of them came up to me and jammed its nose straight into my crotch. She got embarrassed and apologized, but I am a dog person. I told her that it was OK, he was just saying hello. Dogs always seem to know when they meet a "dog person" like me. When I sleep "alone," i.e. when my wife is away from home overnight, my dog, Guinness, aways sleeps right next to me, not at my feet (4:37 in the video). He's a Rottweiler mix, 60 lbs, and too large to fit at the end of the bed. He starts off with his head on my wife's pillow. But when I wake up, he is usually facing the foot of the bed with his back to me (and snuggling up against me). That allows him to face the door, so I certainly believe that he is doing his best to protect me. Of course, this is purely symbolic. If anyone knocks on our door, he barks his head off until we open the door, then he goes and hides under the kitchen table! LOL I love my big guy, even when he's acting weird. Great video!

We've had 17 dogs in our house over the last 20+ years, and about 1/3 of them have liked to eat poop. Yuckie as it seems to us, it's a bit of a genetic thing that we just can't manage to break 'em on, despite various diets for the group over the years. Three of the present four will do it - and it seems to get worse with their ages as they regress and become more instinctual. As I researched it I found that it's compelling to them because historically it was the way for them to get "nutrition" during lean times, getting undigested stuff back into their systems. Gross, but somewhat understandable in that situation - but sure doesn't explain why the youngest here now will follow the others around waiting for her "hot lunch" when there's food in the bowls, treats on the floor, and lots of other options! 😮
Wolves will eat poop (their own) 🐺 and for good reason too, they need to eat the parasites in it. But dogs no longer need to (their poop is now parasite free). But for some of them, that instinct is still clearly there in the form of general poop eating. Starbuck will sometimes eat duck poop, lol. Trying to tell him though, that he no longer need to eat it, for some reason doesn't seem to work 🤔😂🤷🐕
We rescued a dog that ate her own poo but everytime I caught her doing it I brushed her teeth, she hated this and that soon stopped her once she associated them.
Put a teaspoon of meat tenderizer in their food. It seems to make the poop inedibly nasty (no clue why/how). It's completely safe in small doses, tasteless, cheap, and it completely cured my two dogs after about a month. It's been years since I've seen them eat any poop.
Thanks so much for the video I just learned much from these odd behaviors, I have dogs and they do behave the same way as highlighted in this video.. thank you so much..
My ex-wife and I had two Airedale Terrier females when we were homesteading in BC, Canada. Not only did these two forty pound wonders chase off thousand pound Grizzly bears but when I was working they would sit together and watch me INTENTLY as if they were trying to learn and understand what I was doing. It was almost eerie ... I almost expected them to start a conversation about the project I was working on. Great dogs. RIP, Doggos.
@@FurPalsFirst They were AMAZING. We were the only homestead in the area which was NOT harassed by a rogue Grizzly Bear terrorizing the rest of the area one summer. We didn't even know it was around because our forty pound girls kept it away. Every other dog in the area was useless. When we were building the house, our neighbour came to visit with her new baby in a pram. She parked the baby in front of the house in the sun and our girls came over, sniffed the baby thoroughly then they planted themselves one on each side of her and DID NOT MOVE until we had strolled around and finished our visit with the neighbour. They were well trained as companion dogs but the protective instinct was all theirs. One time we came home and there were three bears and two cubs raiding the next door orchard. We stopped and let the girls out for a bit of fun. Those poor, poor bears spinning in circles to keep the dogs in sight then the ran like H into the forest after the cubs came down from the trees. Just another day of fun and frolic for the two of them. I had dogs most of my life but these two Airedales were the most amazing, courageous, strong, sturdy, smart, loving and caring dogs I have ever had. They were actual independent thinkers who were in a genuine cooperative, symbiotic relationship with us. In fact, they were smart enough to leave the resident Moose alone but would always deal with the bears. Many of our neighbors didn't go far from their homes for fear of the bears but we went wherever we wanted whenever we wanted and were completely safe and guarded by these two forty pound dynamos. Would love to have one more dog before I die but ... apartment living and all that. Thanks for your reply. Cheers!
My late dog Osito exhibited all of these treats. Particularly at night he always slept at my feet, and I always felt like he didn't wanted to be close to my head to hugging him
I have 2 huskies and know exactly what they want or try to say to me. Our connection is strong and they listen well. And howcome? Only because ive been spending time with them regularly, I come sit next to them on the floor and have some time together, talking to them etc. Not briefly but for 10-20 minhtes. People dont understand how important that is…
Roofus could understand English as well as anyone. I just talked to him all day and used conversational release words and he figured the rest out. No leash in the city and lived to be almost 20. Long live roofus
Id like to add this aswell; when you start learning this language then you will be able to not only hear and understand them but also feel them as if you are strongly connected enough to move like 1, just like the packs they would have in the wild. You really can sense their senses if you are focusing on it.
My dog does every single thing you mentioned about Starbuck. Earlier I was too concerned because of her behavior but now I am relieved. Thank you for sharing this information. 😊
When your dog is very tired and walks in a circle on the bed does he scratch at the center of the circle? Hypothesis: He's making a nest to sleep in and outdoors he would be digging out a small pit in the dirt.
He does do this and that is a hypothesis that makes a lot of sense! It is so funny how many wolf instincts dogs still have, despite the fact that they now live very safe and sheltered lives, haha! 🐕
My wife and I have a fur baby. It has been maybe a year or so and he is approximately a four year old rescued Shih tzu. we both adore him. Very loving.
We have our first dog and I always found it kinda disgusting and strange that she sneezed at me while playing so much, she normally does sneeze very little. Was really surprised to learn that it is just a sign that your dog tells you everything is good and your "fight" is just fun to them. Really strang to learn that in the beginning.
Oh how lovely! Starbuck was raised in Rotorua as a puppy. I flew up there to adopt him and bring him home here. It's so beautiful I am sure your dog/s love it!
My dog defies most of these traits aside from staring. ut he does that usually to judge me, and get my attention so I can see he wants something. My dog never sleeps turned away from me. He sleeps cheek to cheek with me, or on my face LOL.
Disagree with the grass one. - My dog starts drooling when he has an upset stomach. Heavy panting, licking lips. When i take him outside he starts eating grass. - He's 9, this has happened Many times (between 4 dogs, and Many vets telling us) to the point of its Fact for me that they do eat grass when their stomach is upset. (Maybe its not the only reason, but its Always been my experience)
Awesome video. i enjoyed it and it explained some things about my dog. lol also cool board games you got in the background. I also bought darkest dungeon. I am still painting the figures. how you enjoying it ?
Thank you! And nice spotting! That is one of the games on the "to-play" list but haven't yet played. Been playing a lot of Thunderstone Quest recently and do highly recommend that.
@@FurPalsFirst Awesome. thanks i will check out Thunderstone Quest. My friends and i played Darkest Dungeon and got destroyed with so much stress. It was just bad luck on our rolls. But it was lots of fun. The only draw back was that it took a while to setup and then to put away. Thanks again for your video. I learned so much and i will study my dog on a few things. 🥰
I know it's slightly off topic but I always know when I need a shower (I have depression, adhd and autism so showering is an issue) when my cats sniff my armpits and act like they are on catnip. It's hilarious and very sweet that they love me so much but I do know I need a shower!
Thanks for the information. Our 2 year old blue heeler,Blue, literally tries to eat EVERYTHING. Seriously. It's beginning to worry me because he tries to eat sticks, rocks, candy wrappers, pop cans, shoes, curtains, pillows, and anything else he can find laying around. Hes done it since we got him about 18 months ago, when he was only 6 months old.. We hoped he'd "grow out of it", not the case.I Don t understand because his bowl always has food and we give him treats regularly because he is so awesome, smart and loving. We have always home vetted our dogs, and they are very healthy.( our last blue heeler " Catdog" lived with us for 23 years before he passed) so we in no way neglect our pets, I'm just wondering why he does this and how do I break him of it? It could potentially be dangerous and I am concerned. Thanks.
Dogs eat nonfermentable fiber for the same reason we do. It helps move food through the digestive tract. They are mostly carnivores because they lack the intestinal microbes to be able to make use of most plant matter.
Never been a Dog Dad .. but have had many years of interactions long term with family members dogs .. and say hello to NYC dogs when ever they say YES .. had a cat for 13 yrs .. she slept under the covers against my belly every night .. she picked me .. kept crawling away from a box of all her siblings on a NY Stoop over and over and crawling all over me ..
there was a dog eating grass at the beginning of this video, my dog eats grass to, i don't know why, i am just happy to see other dogs eating grass !!!
My "Västgötaspets" or swedish vallhund looks so much like yours. So fun to see one on youtube as they are quite rare, even in their home country sweden. They the best!

@@FurPalsFirst My current Corgi Dream is a COVID dog and even at 4 years old is still not quite ready for me to publicize her agility videos just yet. (They are quite hilarious - I do post them sometimes to our facebook friends.)
I love dogs. The first time I've met the very small dog of my nephew (a baby Lancashire Heeler I think) she ran to me and lied down between my feet. Nobody could make sense of that.
We always had dogs, even when I was just a little child. Strange thing is that all my dogs always "stole" one of my shoes. Some dogs brought them into their basket, the "outdoor dogs" brought them outside, where I found them hidden somewhere or even buried. None of the shoes were damaged and I have no sweaty feet. Anyone any ideas? Could it be comfort them while I'm at work, or shopping, or sleeping?
If I had to guess, I would guess it is because our feet have the most sweat glands per inch of anywhere on our bodies. Your shoes will have a lot of pheromones on them since they are secreted through our sweat glands, regardless of whether we sweat or not. And so your dogs really loved your smell!
Haha, oh man, I play a lot of board games and they often involve cards. If I ever play games with people from overseas and say "can you please shuffle you dEck" the looks I get are incredible 🤣
My dogs dont sleep at my feet..... the Spaniels crawl under the sheets and shimmy up to the pillow end and try to block your airways with their ears to stop you leaking air and the shepherds and collies think theyre tiny lap dogs and would literally curl up in a ball on top of your chest if you let them.
Fantastic video. I knew most of it already (to me it seems obvious) but I know a lot of people don't, plus I love your detailed delivery of the facts. I didn't know the one about licking their nose! I also enjoyed all the beautiful wolf footage you used. I will never understand how anyone can love dogs, while disliking wolves. They are two sides of the same coin! Wolves are such amazing creatures. Love my house wolf 😊 Your dog is adorable!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! Yes, wolves are absolutely beautiful. Starbuck is a Swedish Vallhund and they are known as "Wolf Corgi's" so it is almost like I have a little baby wolf running around, haha 🐺
3 of my yes (2 females, 1 male),would go into a protective position when I am using the bathroom and in the shower. They would face the door. My chug (from Colorado Pug Rescue) also behaved this way.
When my childhood dog a.maltese was a pup she sneezed when excited, so we trained her to do that for yes, She was quite spoiled, so she was was given treats, she was offered choices and selected same with games and toys, we listed them, and she sneezed at her favorite.
Oh wow! That is very cool to meet another Vallhund NZ family, hello to you & Atlas 🐕 are you in the FB group? Starbuck actually came from Rotorua - the Vallarity family.
That explains it! They are probably related 😊 does Atlas have a tail? It was 50/50 for tail/no tail for Starbuck & his siblings (he doesn't even have a stump, lol!)
8/23. Thank you. I long wondered why my dog al ways napped with me on the sofa with her lovely tail almost brushing my chin. At one time, because of this, I wondered if my breath was offensive! Glad she was looking out for me.
Humans do smell pheromones, we don't register them as a distinctive smell? There was a study done in Israel, where they interacted with people and shook there hands and every single person always smelled there hand after a handshake. The study showed that we do this because thousands of years ago we had the ability to detect these smells that we don't recognize anymore, but we keep doing this still? It's a neat study I watched it here on RUclips. Also what's your pup's breed? Very beautiful pup?
What a fascinating study! Very cool. Yes, it is absolutely true, our senses do register them even if we don't smell their odor like dogs. I probably should have clarified. When I say "smell" I mean consciously recognizing them. We do subconsciously recognize them though! And thank you so much! He is a Swedish Vallhund 🐕
Thank you so much for your support and kind words! Sometimes I can feel a bit self-conscious having a "strange" accent, and so this comment definitely means a lot to me & Starbuck 🐕
sometimes I think my dog eat the grass for water on the blades. what I couldn't figure out was why for a month she would eat soil from a certain walk area.
Thank you so much! And Starbuck is a Swedish Vallhund. Hello from both of us in New Zealand 👋 edit: also just to add, Vallhunds are herding dogs. That is why they are surprisingly common in New Zealand. We don't have many predators in the wild, so we have less hunting dogs, but we have LOTS of farmland, so we have lots of herding dogs 🐕 about half of his siblings now live on farms 🐑
Stupid question, I know dogs feel vulnerable while pooping so they look at you, so should I scan the area around my pooping dog so he feels like I’m doing my job or should I keep up the awkward unbreaking eye contact?
My dogs and I sneeze with each other regularly. I can ask for sneezes and so can they. It's just something we do. I also wag my tail at every dog that wags at me and I sometimes pretend to butt sniff by blowing when they put it in my face.
@@FurPalsFirst People always think that I have genuis dogs but the truth is that I simply named behaviors they already had and rewarded them for it. My dogs know exactly what I have asked for because I already named the behavior in a gleeful way.
Another cool thing about dogs smelling abilities is that well let’s use walking into a kitchen where the holiday meal is cooked. When humans walk in we can recognize thousands of different smells just like our dogs. You might pick out multiple types of seasonings etc… if you pay attention we are recognizing them one at a time. Now if you were a dog you would smell every different sent all at once

Cheers!
The sneeze thing is amazing. When I’m being playful with my 10 year old Maltese, we have at least 3 sneezes before she gets to the good stuff.
Very informative! Thanks 🎉
My late dog Osito exhibited all of these treats. Particularly at night he always slept at my feet, and I always felt like he didn't wanted to be close to my head to hugging him
Love to see a fellow hobby board gamer in an unexpected place! Nice collection :)
> "Why do dogs sniff peoples crotches when they say hello?".
I used to do that too, but the police put me on a watch list.
🤣🤣
When talking about sneezing, people should look up reverse sneezing as it can be frightening if they come across it without knowing what it is.
I just subscribed, great video. Now my lab’s behaviour is making more sense! Thanks. Greeting from the Bay of Plenty 😊
Thank you so much. Hello from Starbuck and I in Christchurch 👋🐕
Nice video
Thank you so much! Hello from Starbuck and I 👋🐕
Great information. Good job!
Oh how lovely. Shih Tzu's are very cute! What is his name?
Charlie @@FurPalsFirst
What a lovely name! My sister's dog is called Charlie too. You will have to give Charlie a scratch for Starbuck and I 👋
I have adopted a little dog from street and this video really made me less anxious about her.
Same! The sneezing especially, my pup sneezes all the time
We have our first dog and I always found it kinda disgusting and strange that she sneezed at me while playing so much, she normally does sneeze very little. Was really surprised to learn that it is just a sign that your dog tells you everything is good and your "fight" is just fun to them. Really strang to learn that in the beginning.
Great clip, thanks for sharing x
Thank you for taking the time to leave such a kind comment, it means a lot to us 😊🐕
Thanks for this. Greetings from New Zealand ❤
Thank you, hello from Christchurch 👋
We're in Rotorua 🙂
Oh how lovely! Starbuck was raised in Rotorua as a puppy. I flew up there to adopt him and bring him home here. It's so beautiful I am sure your dog/s love it!
@@FurPalsFirst Christchurch is beautiful too. My hubby guessed that's where you were. Lovely to meet you and Starbuck ❤
This was very good 👍
My dog defies most of these traits aside from staring. ut he does that usually to judge me, and get my attention so I can see he wants something.
My dog never sleeps turned away from me. He sleeps cheek to cheek with me, or on my face LOL.
amazing content
Great video!! Subbed!
Thank you so much. For a small channel like this, it means a lot! Starbuck and I say hello 🐕👋
Great information! Thanks
And thank you for stopping by! Starbuck and I really appreciate it 👋🐕
Excellent work, research and production! Great topic too!!
Thanks for the video, very informative :). I thought it had great pacing and feel too.
She's wrong on this one.
My experiences has been the same as she explained in the video. I believe that yours wasn't, all dogs are different.
I recognise you from a t-shirt video about Printify it was very helpful 👍
Thanks, so interesting & really did answer some of my questions. 👏👏👏👏👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I know it's slightly off topic but I always know when I need a shower (I have depression, adhd and autism so showering is an issue) when my cats sniff my armpits and act like they are on catnip. It's hilarious and very sweet that they love me so much but I do know I need a shower!
Great video, great accent.
Liked and subbed
Thank you so much, it is great to have you apart of the community!
Oh the sneezing part, I always thought it was because my room was so dusty that my doxie would sneeze. I would like to believe that he was happy
My dog loves to snack on some grass while we're going on a walk. He seems to be a bit choosy about the particular grass plant he wants a snack from.
3/4 of a million views and basically nobody subscribed, how rude this was a great video.
Your cat sounds so lovely! And also, thank you for checking if a dog says YES before patting them, that is a wonderful thing to do 🐕
After watching this I woke my two furbabies from their sleep and gave them extra petting & hugs and some treats. Love my furbabies!
Yep, my dog does all of the above. Plus she will sometimes snuggle head first when I am sitting.
She sounds like a very cute & loving dog! 🐕
there was a dog eating grass at the beginning of this video, my dog eats grass to, i don't know why, i am just happy to see other dogs eating grass !!!
I agree, I was honestly so relieved when I discovered it was normal. It's nice to learn that other dogs do it too 🐕
For some reason I feel like having “fush and chups” after watching this video 🐟🍟
I've also heard that the tight circling before laying down is a remnant of dogs making a "bed" in tall grass.
Starbuck looks like a merge of my two dogs🥰Adorable
Love that shirt.
My "Västgötaspets" or swedish vallhund looks so much like yours. So fun to see one on youtube as they are quite rare, even in their home country sweden. They the best!
Love your Swedish Vallhund...so cute...I have a Norwegian Elkhund...both are awesome dogs!!!
Thank you! Norwegian Elkhound's are pretty rare outside of Nordic countries. Is that where you are based, or did you happen to come across your pup another way?
@@FurPalsFirst my brother in law had one when he lived in New Mexico back in the 90's and fell in love with the breed. We live in Oklahoma and found a breeder in Colorado and drove over to get her. We can't imagine our life without her funny personality!!!
Haha I am sure you did. We have one Norwegian Elkhund that is a regular at our local Vallhund meet ups (they really do look like bigger Vallhunds! She fits right in) and she is the most beautiful dog. You are very lucky 🥰
I love dogs so freakin much
My 2 Peruvian Incas don't sneeze when they play fight, but sneeze when they're frustrated, like if one misses out on a treat, or loses a play fight with my hand.
my dog be sleeping by the feet but 90% of the time she’s snuggling me like spooning 😅
Starbuck is so cool!
It's cool to see a Swedish Vallhund with a staring role. Go Starbuck!
Thank you! I have recently started Starbuck on agility. I hope he can one day be as good as your Corgis that I can see in your videos 🐕
@@FurPalsFirst My current Corgi Dream is a COVID dog and even at 4 years old is still not quite ready for me to publicize her agility videos just yet. (They are quite hilarious - I do post them sometimes to our facebook friends.)
Haha and plus I am sure they are so cute as well. When she is ready, in her own time, she will be a pro 🐕
Dogs really are that lovable.
What kind of dog is Starbuck?
He is a Swedish Vallhund! 🐕🌞
One of my dogs favourite sleep positions is across my neck, head tucked between my head and shoulder. I wonder were that comes from? 😊
Haha it sounds like she has definitely found her favorite spot! 😊
Girinteed, this gil is frim Niw Zilind 😄
Haha, oh man, I play a lot of board games and they often involve cards. If I ever play games with people from overseas and say "can you please shuffle you dEck" the looks I get are incredible 🤣
@@FurPalsFirst Hahaha! Got it 😄
Thank you❣🐾🐾
My dogs dont sleep at my feet..... the Spaniels crawl under the sheets and shimmy up to the pillow end and try to block your airways with their ears to stop you leaking air and the shepherds and collies think theyre tiny lap dogs and would literally curl up in a ball on top of your chest if you let them.
I didn’t know the lucking the nose one! Our Lab does a lot of these things and more 🙄
My dog does all these things, thanks for your video
When my childhood dog a.maltese was a pup she sneezed when excited, so we trained her to do that for yes,
She was quite spoiled, so she was was given treats, she was offered choices and selected same with games and toys, we listed them, and she sneezed at her favorite.
This was so informative & presented in such a cute way! 🥰🐕🦺🥰
Thank you so much, that is so nice of you! Starbuck & I really glad you liked it. Hello from both of us 👋🐕
Nice board game collection
Thank you! Always great to meet another board game fan!
My queen slept at my pillow, curled up and with her snout resting in my head 🖤
Aww Starbuck is gorgeous, is he by any chance from Vanaheim breeder in NZ? My boy Atlas is from there and they look really similar!
Oh wow! That is very cool to meet another Vallhund NZ family, hello to you & Atlas 🐕 are you in the FB group? Starbuck actually came from Rotorua - the Vallarity family.
@@FurPalsFirst OH, I think Atlas' Mum is half Vallarity. That'll be the similarity I'm seeing. Yep we're in the FB group 😊
That explains it! They are probably related 😊 does Atlas have a tail? It was 50/50 for tail/no tail for Starbuck & his siblings (he doesn't even have a stump, lol!)
@@FurPalsFirst Yeah maybe they're distant cousins or something 😂 he's got a tail, not super curly like a lot of them though.
8/23. Thank you. I long wondered why my dog al ways napped with me on the sofa with her lovely tail almost brushing my chin. At one time, because of this, I wondered if my breath was offensive! Glad she was looking out for me.
Haha I know, right! I was like, why does he always turn away from me?! I wish I had known sooner that he was trying to protect me 🥰
Humans do smell pheromones, we don't register them as a distinctive smell?
Wow! so good to hear the Kiwi accent talking about my favourite pet. Hope to hear more from you.
Thank you so much for your support and kind words! Sometimes I can feel a bit self-conscious having a "strange" accent, and so this comment definitely means a lot to me & Starbuck 🐕
@@FurPalsFirst I have seen your other videos. Thank you so much for making them. Much appreciated.
sometimes I think my dog eat the grass for water on the blades. what I couldn't figure out was why for a month she would eat soil from a certain walk area.
Starbuck is very cute, what kind of breed is she? Some kind of hunting dog? BTW, your voice is very sweet.
The grass eating, when our Lab wasn't feeling good it ate grass then brought it all up and was fine after.
Stupid question, I know dogs feel vulnerable while pooping so they look at you, so should I scan the area around my pooping dog so he feels like I’m doing my job or should I keep up the awkward unbreaking eye contact?
Yes, just don't immitate your dog.
@@Iforgotme it’s my yard buddy
My dogs and I sneeze with each other regularly. I can ask for sneezes and so can they. It's just something we do. I also wag my tail at every dog that wags at me and I sometimes pretend to butt sniff by blowing when they put it in my face.
That might be the cutest thing I have ever heard! They sound crazy smart also to have learned to sneeze "on demand" like that, haha 🐕
@@FurPalsFirst People always think that I have genuis dogs but the truth is that I simply named behaviors they already had and rewarded them for it. My dogs know exactly what I have asked for because I already named the behavior in a gleeful way.
My dog, a highlander Terrier did the same things😂😂😂
My Chihuahua also knows to lie down on my phone to get my attention
They're so smart aren't they. They know how to get what they want 😉
Glad to know my pug is trying to protect me.
My youngest dog sleeps at the head of the bed, either with her head on my pillow or with her head under my pillow.
