Amen to this. I can’t count how many dogs behaviors I’ve fixed or reduced by this tactic. People always hate hearing it or don’t want to but it’s true.
Question: my pup has a hard time getting the food out. Do you pack it tightly? He kind of gives up when he cant get to it and forgets its there. Can you tell me your packing method?
Anthony Vultaggio it would all depend on how old the puppy is, the way you are packing, the size of the Kong, the food it’s self. But mostly if they are hungry and been worked well, they will find a way. Most people get turned off on the idea but if they are hungry they will find a way. It’s best to keep challenging the puppy. Mostly with puppies a Kong is too tuff to chew on. So it really depends on the age, size of Kong, and the food you are using.
Anthony Vultaggio also to note creating a food drive with a mixture of toy/prey drive will really help the dog get more interested. Intensify the rewards and exaggerate the expression the dog will thrive.
Trust the process. My dog has a severe separation anxiety. Leaving him all alone? A horror story. Step by step, using Kong and leaving him alone from half an hour to hour or two hours we ended up here - where as soon as my dog sees I'm preparing Kong for him, he just cannot wait for me to get tf out of the house. He associated it quickly. Before, he couldn't be left alone for more than half an hour. Now.. the time doesn't matter at all. Up to six hours, no problem. But please, people remember, that this solves a lot of problems yes, but a good exercise for the dog, before leaving him alone, is even more important !
Thank you for this. My rescue pup has some severe fear and anxiety of being alone. We're really early into our adoption (day 3) but I know I need to work on a lot with him. You've given me hope.
If they had social media 40 years ago,it would be like; "well a rolled up newspaper does the trick for me" Or " rub his nose in it,that'll teach him to go outside" We've really came a long way,I don't know many dog owners who don't capitalize on all the info now available through social media. Champ and I are grateful for good people like Simpawtico, thanks for helping us and ultimately helping dogs!
Great advice! Just tried this with my 3 month old puppy and had over 30 minutes of peaceful bliss as he chewed his little heart out, happy as anything and the constant little drops of food kept him interested. Brilliant canine ninja move
Thank you for this. Our 7 month old very active pup is recovering from her spay surgery. She’s used to being active all day and now she has to rest and recoup. Even with the meds to calm her, she is bored, restless, and chewing anything within her reach. I’m going to put all of her meals in her Kongs to keep her mind busy and happy while she’s on restricted activity. Thank you.
Jeez, I love the simplicity of this, and how you’ve made sense of everything. As a first time dog owner, I really appreciate the logical way that you explain everything. I’ll definitely be watching more. Thank you!
Seriously, Kong should give these instructions out with the toy. The best thing that my old dog loved was the Kong frisbee, and I loved the fact that it took him 5 years to destroy it!
My thoughts exactly. I couldn't figure ot how to keep the food in. I thought they made special sized treats for it and was looking everywhere for them so I gave up. This video is a game changer
They won't put instructions with them because they want you to look over the isle and buy their line of over priced crap at your convenience... I know they got me the first time out of ignorance. But then I realized there are a lot a treats and tasty pasty things to stuff in there. If the dog likes it, its good enough.
I am long overdue in thanking you for this video. My adult Jack Russell fell into a deep, destructive depression when her Lab/Shepherd brother died and started pretty much trashing my house whenever I went to work. Meanwhile, I rescued another dog (a few months later) who was underweight and needed to put on about a pound and a half. I filled a kong for each day of the week, modifying only in that I topped them with PB before freezing and gave one to each of the dogs before leaving for work. It has worked so well! Neither have separation anxiety and the formerly skinny guy is in perfect shape. Thanks!
I am a dog trainer and this is precisely how I do it. It makes crate training a puppy MUCH easier. Conditioning a young dog to love the crate is essential in my opinion. Great video.
@soilentgreen My concern is my puppy having to poop after finishing her Kong meal in her crate. She's 12w and my goal is to be able to leave her for 2 hours
@@4SeasonMom controlling food and water intake is crucial to potty/crate training. Is your puppy having accidents after only eating out of the kong? Are you stuffing it with goodies that pass through the GI quickly (peanut butter or the like?)… one of my favorite thing to stuff them with is soggy kibble…then freeze it. Lots of variables to take in to account… If I were you I would do an experiment/assessment. Fast your dog so you know they don’t have to poop…feed them…then see how long it takes for them to have to go. You can do the same with water. The last 8wk pup I potty/crate trained had about 2 hrs till they had to pee and 3 till they had to poop. They’d eat at 5 and get their last drink at 7, last let out at 10pm… in the 7 weeks I had the pup…zero accidents. Good luck and be patient. Not all puppies are that easy. My forever dog took months to potty train.
Thank you for going viral with this video. Even if the dogs don't receive what they need in life from owners, it's great that you can reach 6m people like this man. Far out.
Be sure to consider the water added to frozen kibble as your dogs water intake. Especially younger puppies that can’t hold their bladder too long. This is extremely important when Crate training. We don’t add the water so to avoid accidents for our pup.
I'd rather take pup out more often for potty than limit water and risk a bladder infection or digestive issues (water is very important for kibble digestion). Actually, the more pup drinks, the more opportunities you have to potty train. A pup will learn much faster with more repetition.
Used the Kong like this for my current dog's first year of life. Great results. These days (two years later), Kong is still the favorite toy. Fill it with a strip a jerky inside and a peanut butter cap, he's thrilled. After getting that good stuff out, he wants to play fetch with the Kong. No problem. We also use the Kong Bone. After getting the goodies out of each end, he then wants to play tug with the bone. We always let him win 9 out of 10 times with tug games. Our medium size Aussie/Lab mix has the black Kong and Kong Bone, as the red ones didn't last long with his chewing power. Both of these toys are great when we travel and get into the motel room. Give him the toy and he calms down and accepts his current surroundings. Dogs like familiar, pleasurable things to keep them happy and calm.
So I found your videos JUST in time---came across them as I was researching to prepare for the arrival of our new rescue pup After watching this, I went and added more Kongs to our collection and got them filled/frozen before he came home. I also decided to get more for our current dog and do the same for her, figuring it couldn't hurt to give her a self soothing kong whenever he got one to help with the transition. We expected the first 3 days to be absolute CHAOS(we read about "3 days/3 weeks/3 months")with the puppy's world being turned upside down/ him decompressing and adjusting and with our new dog having her territory upheaved. But we are winding down on day 3 and it has been....OKAY?!?! Let me tell you, using these Kongs like this is a BIG reason why---ABSOLUTE GODSEND. Like, major bonkers anxious energy when he arrived, and there have been the occasional wild/dicey moments for sure, but with this kong method they have multiple sessions a day where they both engage in relaxed, self soothing behavior--which in turn has helped puppy boy improve his "off" switch. Dog training isn't always stress free or easy, but doing THIS is---not saying it should replace any training, but everyone should do themselves and their dogs a favor and use this tool. Thank you so much, currently working my way through the rest of your videos, every single one has been so easy to understand and that makes implementing them feel a lot more doable. It makes me excited to train!
This has helped so much with my dog’s separation anxiety. Before using a Kong he would cry and scratch at the door nonstop until I returned. Now before I leave I place a little bit of peanut butter in it and he doesn’t even notice me leave.
I stuff my pups kong with dog food pate, I give her it every time I leave her in her crate and I have to go out ! Now she is super excited whenever I get the kong and runs into her crate because she knows she’s going to get her treat haha
@@BoredOuttaMyMind yep mine always gets a regular treat too. All I gotta say is "cage" and they bolt over to it excitedly. They have their food/water in it too and they think of it as their "safe space" the key is no matter how mad you are at them never yell/scold them when they're in their crate.
@@dorothyatchison1825 we didnt feed her meals in her crate just treat time in the kong when we left. She is the most well behaved dog and she doesnt even use a crate anymore so it did her absolutely no harm.......
This is very helpful. I adopted a 8 month old shepherd mix three days ago and she is learning the ropes. She is very smart and needs to be occupied. I just bought a Kong today and am so glad I came across your video. Thank you
G B Try putting just a modicum of baby food and freeze it. I found my puppy doesn't yet bite down hard enough to get out anything packed in. The Shape might also might not be his favorite. You might want to try the Orbee Tuff produce collection. I have a pom puppy and he find the raspberry satisfying to chew on.
I never got a Kong bc I thought that if you fill it with peanut butter (or any kind of food) it would get all over the dog's paws, fur, rug, cushions, etc. Doesn't that happen??? Who wants a dog smelling like peanut butter all the time bc it's smeared all over its fur and skin underneath, and then everything else the dog touches???
cyc7lops You do not overstuffed the Kong, so it gets liked out by the dog. No mess. I put a little chicken baby food and crunchy, natural peanut butter (no sugar = less messy), and put them in the freezer.
We got our dog from the shelter and discovered he had horrible separation anxiety. He escaped kennels and would destroy entire rooms, hurt himself and had diarrhea everywhere. We almost took him back for fear of him hurting himself but we decided to try out a trainers advice. The routine thing is so true, that was the base of everything we did for him. We gave him a couple Kong’s if we were leaving for longer than usual, it was a massive help. It took time and routine and some other aids but he is great now! You’d have no idea how bad his anxiety was. :)
Did you have issues with your dogs pooping in the crate after leaving them a Kong? We've been doing well with feeding and then taking our pup out for a poop 10 minutes after a meal so no accidents in the house up to now. The crate, however, is another story. I'm afraid to trade one problem for another.
I've only done this for two days and already behaviors I was annoyed by have melted away. (Less chewing on me, my pillows, my shoe laces, less following me around the house like I was going to vanish.) I can't believe I've been using my kong so wrong for so many years. (Or just underutilizing it.) THANK YOU, Ian and team!
I can't believe this highly produced and super informative video is free! You are a blessing! Just got a Shiba Inu puppy less than a week ago, and he goes in his crate just fine with his toys, but these tips will for sure get him to love it even more. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
All of the Inu dogs (Shibas, Akitas, etc...) are brilliant and very loyal and protective. I had an Akita. Whenever I was on the back porch, she'd sit on guard at the corner of the house so she could be on the lookout with a larger "line of fire." Fantastic pet all around. And the Shibas are adorable. I just got an Alaskan Malamute. God help us all. He's very cuddly and he is learning, so maybe there is hope...
we love kong toys!!! great video. i also love how you say “it not what it is, its what u train it to be” people coukd learn from that statement right there
So glad I found this video, just adopted a dog last week and she's wonderful just needs some training so I'm really hoping this helps her with settling down and being okay with being alone when I have to go to work. Feeling confident after watching this and will be heading to the pet store to pick up some kong toys today lol
Thomas Edwards ur not worth the time. Let's just say it's not so easy learning how to lip read and it's not just the person that's deaf that it affects. It's everyone around them that has to learn how to talk with the hands.. just shows you low nothing
We put chunky peanut butter in our Kong which keeps our very active whippet satisfied for a long time! He gets so excited when he sees the jar of peanut butter coming out of the cupboard! Please make sure you check the ingredients in the peanut butter you put in the kong though- only buy jars where the only ingredient is 100% peanuts, nothing else added like sugar, salt, stabilisers or additives as these are all very bad for your dog! I’m in the UK and there are loads of peanut butter brands that have just peanuts as their ingredients- they’re not even expensive and are often cheaper than the big brand ‘junk food’ peanut butters that have a massive ingredient list!
@@Dina4444. Hi Dina, we’ve experimented with a lot of peanut butter over the years and the best one we found consistency-wise and texture-wise is the Meridian Crunchy Peanut Butter. It’s currently just £2 a jar at Tesco and the only ingredient is ‘roasted peanuts whole skin on’- nothing else added. The chunky one is the perfect texture and consistency to stay in the Kong without it running out of it and our dog just goes nuts for it lol (plus no adverse reaction like diarrhoea from additives). The only thing with this peanut butter is that the peanuts and the peanut oil naturally separates as it has no palm oil, additives or stabilisers to stop this natural process. So basically you just have to mix the oil back in or if you want a drier peanut butter you can just pour the oil out (that’s what I do). Hope that helps :)
As I sat here crying cuz have tried a million things tk get Harley not too inhale his food. As I watched this I can't believe how dumb I have been. I have about 20* king type freezer toys (his popsicles) that we had to stop due to over being weight. I put kibble in and made usually a healthy yogert mix, froze and he had each night. Light bulb...going to do for his meals now! Thank you, your video's are very nice. * note: I bought squeezy sweaky toys at dollar store, cut in 1/2 or 1/3 and used them (kong's are way toi expensive for us). I pray this tip helps. Stay blessed, Heather and Harley
I use my dogs’ kibble to stuff his chew toy and he goes crazy. You don’t need to stuff it with unnecessary food and treats(unless you want to) as long as your dog loves the Kong toy, it won’t matter what you put in it 👍
Congrats for the RUclips Algorithm's blessings! I was surprised to find out it was an almost-3-years-old video. Glad to have stumbled upon it even though I don't have a dog YET ;) Awesome editing and incredible value packaged inside this video. Keep on rocking!
I’m bringing a young dog home and I want her to know that I’ll always come back after I go to work, and this is perfect! Wow, I’m mind blown! This just seems foolproof. I might come back and update on how it’s going!
Thank you for this video! It's a life changer! I lacked the imagination. Now my dog stays in the crate. Almost 2 months of crate training, and this stuffed Kong has worked with my small pitbull who's a tough chewer. And it's helped with her boredom (due to heartworm treatment), it's kept her busy and I think it will help her enjoy the crate and enjoy more time to herself
This was freakin AMAZING! I can hear the famous last words in my head thinking of our little buddy Cagney who had isolation distress bordering on anxiety. And he was picky, too. If I had started him with Kong like this video shows, it would have helped tremendously, I bet. BUT...we are adopting a rescue this Saturday and I'm already stocking up on those Kongs. Thank you so much, Simpawtico Dog Training!!!
Simpawtico Dog Training I just saw this video and have been wanting to introduce my 3 Great Danes to a Kong. They are all already crate trained and have a set feeding schedule. Obviously Great Danes eat a large amount and their meals wouldn't even come close to fitting in the Kong, so do you suggest I just hold out a bit of their morning meal to use in the Kong for stimulation when they have down time in their crates?
I have 8 large puppy kongs for my 2 year old 75 lb rough collie who is an extremely gentle chewer, and have already purchased 5 medium puppy kongs for the Collie puppy who will be coming to me at the end of march around 10 weeks old. When he gets big enough, I'll be buying 7 more large puppy kongs. I LOVE kong toys! they helped my dog to love his bed, helped to break him of begging (along with some serious training), and were instrumental in really taking his 'place' command to the next level. I actually stuff his kong with some canned dog food in the top, followed by some kibble, followed by one or two crunchy treats, and topped with either some natural peanut butter, plain greek yogurt, unsweetened applesauce, or pure canned pumpkin. Then I take a 4" bully stick and pop it in so it's sticking out of the top and throw it in the freezer. It takes him about 30 minutes to work his way through all of it. This is a special treat he gets the 2-3 times a week I'm actually home around dinner time---the only time we have formal sit down meals. I tell him to go to his place (on his bed, in the same room), and he will go to his place and work on his kong toy while we eat, and stay on his bed well after he's done. During thanksgiving and Christmas eve when we have large groups of people at the house, he can stay in the dining room as part of the festivities and meal time! It's fantastic, and people are always impressed by his good manners and lack of begging. As a bonus it helped build up his positive associations with his bed (which he didn't like before), and helped me to really create a rock solid 'place' command.
I love this idea! I am having some trouble with the whole meal being in the Kong. She gets two cups of food a day and I do a breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If I feed her in a bowl I generally put around three fourths a cup in the bowl. I bought the large size Kong (one below the biggest they had at the store) but her normal meal amount doesn't fit into one Kong. Should I give her more than one Kong at a time or buy a larger Kong? I feel like there is probably something simple I'm overlooking but this is my first dog to raise on my own so I'm way more lost than I thought I would be.
We measure out 3/4c dry kibble into a small jar for each meal, use that to load up one Squirrel Dude (similar sized toy though we also like Kongs), and give it to our dog as a reward a good behavior at mealtime. We like to cue lie down and look at me. Once she's done we refill it and repeat.
I am SO glad I found your channel! You have by far the best training videos out there - clear, concise and chock full of information. Riley is four months old and we have had him for about a month. I can't wait to start training him using your methods. Your puppy biting video is amazing! Thank you for everything.
I love the kong. I went to the park the other day and it was very useful. I tied up my girl and gave her the kong while my boyfriend was playing one on one with my boy and then did the same when it was her turn to play. It kept the other dog from barking and everyone had a good time. my girl is a husky and digs a lot for fun when we stand still so giving her the kong helped with that too. I plan on using it for car rides, waiting for the bus and days when i don't feel well so can't walk them as much as i usually do. It's perfect for boredom
I have been filling my Kongs for my American Bull Dogs with their own dry food with peanut butter... then freeze it.. yes have 3-4 on hand and rotate.. this has worked for my last 4 American Bull Dogs... they are big and aggressive treat eaters... it calms them down
I have an American Bulldog too. What sweeties they are!! But definitely food driven. I have never used a Kong before. Think I might since I have been through several beds now!!
I discovered this video very recently, and I now send this to all of my training clients as another resource to look to when I explain the benefits of using a kong. Thank you for putting together such a clear, concise, and simple explanation about kongs! It's really appreciated!
Greatest tip ever. Two days in on my puppy and he already loves the kong. I did exactly what you suggested even using cheap peanut butter, though I confess I just got two and now need to get two more. So happy I watched this before I got him. Thx again.
I just adopted a beautiful five month old Blue Pit . I found and love your channel! I didn't know about the KONG, but now I'm telling all my pet loving friends. XOXOX
I have found that the hotter the water, the more it is absorbed into the kibble/dry food and it can treble in size (I boil a kettle). This makes it very malleable and easy to mash into the kong, the wetter the food is, the more solid it will freeze. I've found this really handy for my German Shepherd. Jess is a powerful chewer and if the Kong (Extreme) isn't frozen, it's cleared out in less than 10 minutes. I fill with moist regular dry food/kibble, plug the hole with low fat cream cheese then freeze it. Dairy is high reward for her, tasty stuff for licking as it thaws. Your dogs will only become fussy eaters if you allow them to be, get them interested in Kongs as puppies as a throw toy first before introducing food, encourage food and play rewards as motivation early and the Kong will be your best investment to keep your dog happy. Combined with a little seaweed supplement and the occasional bone, the Kong will help keep their teeth clean too.
Omg I have been struggling so much to crate train my dog and I think you are the only one that used very basic tools, and I am so sure my dog is going to love the crate after follow your strategy. Thank you so much 😊
I never thought about freezing them. I only use them for my dog's peanut butter. He loves it. I will do the freezing of his regular food and see what happens. Thank you!
Thank you for this timeless information! I've watched this video several times over to digest all the great data. My 2020 Christmas present to myself was a 10wk old purebred GSD puppy. I came home from the pet store with a blue large sized Puppy Kong, and filling this with peanut butter has him in love with Kongs, and eagerly entering his crate when I need to leave the house for 45-90mins. After watching your video, I've gone out and purchased an X-Large Kong Classic, which holds a full 1/2 cup of food, and 6' of thick parachute cord that I've strung doubled thru the Kong's top hole as a 3' long chew-proof tether. It's loaded up with Max's vet approved dry food and sitting in the freezer waiting for a more extended time that I may need to leave him alone. Your suggestion to buy one size bigger than looked appropriate was great, I was surprised this Kong only held half a cup. As an imminent 100+ lb adult dog - the healthy weight my vet says my dog will achieve when he grows into his ears and paws - he's currently on a diet of 1+1/8th cup of dry food 3 times a day (when not given wet food, or canine rice/meat/veggie meal for variety), so the Kong doesn't hold a full meal for him, but just under half a serving. I will most likely purchase several more XL Kong/tether combos so I have the ability to present a full serving of food to him entirely frozen in Kongs.
I wanted to than you so much! I have a Boston Terrier (7 months). He had no interests on toys and treats at all, slept a lot and was sad because of leaving his mom and sister. With the kong he got interest on moving and a little bit playing. Now he is chewing Kong with food for 10 minutes and do not lose his interest. Progress! This is all thanks to your wonderful channel and suggestions. Thank you, Thank you Thank you!!! Maybe any suggestion how to learn him jump up and dow to the couch? :D He is afraid from the high :(
Thanks, years ago we bought a Kong for our first puppy, with no idea what it was for other than a chew toy (before RUclips) this looks like a great idea for our new puppy.

Newly rescued puppy mom over here! Thank you for this video.
My family gifted me a Doberman puppy after my 14 y/o lab passed away. He seems to think I am his chew toy. I have a blood disorder and his constant attacks on my ankles have me with purple dots everywhere. In spite of this, I am never letting him go. He is my baby. He and I need to work together to improve. I will be studying your videos.
im getting a new puppy in a few weeks so ive been researching like crazy. I want him to be a happy and well adjusted puppy and ive heard these help with crate training. this video was awesome, thanks
Great video. I recommend using a blender for better consistency and to prep in bulk. Basically I blend dog food, water and a bit of peanut butter. I keep the blended food in my Magic Bullet blender containers in the fridge and just spoon the mixture into the Kongs whenever I'm prepping. Super quick to just scoop/funnel it into the Kongs and it freezes better when it's blended.
Curious to ask what kind of ratio of food, water and peanut butter you used to stuff? We just adopted a dog and I just saw this video and currently have 2 in the freezer with just food and water and will dab the pit edge with peanut butter like the video when we leave later to do some errands
@@KevAng039 I only use a little peanut butter cause I don't want my dachshunds to get fat. I usually mix it in with the food so that the smell is on all the food, but it probably doesn't matter much. I think freezing it is the most important part.
@@egdowney1 I usually use a blender, so I don't soak it at all. Just food, water, and peanut butter in the blender. If I'm in a rush, sometimes I just put the dry food directly in, run water through the Kong, then put peanut butter only at the entrance of the Kong to hold in the dog food and for smell/taste. The last method doesn't work as well, but works when you need to prep them quickly.
@@egdowney1 not long. You just want the outside wet enough so that it’s damp and will freeze. The food doesn’t need to be soggy if the food is still solid you can stuff at a little better and tuck the pieces of kibble under the edges of the inside of the Kong. It’s good if it’s a little bit easier to get the food out in the beginning and as they understand how to use it you can make it a little more challenging and harder to get the food out.
Thedancestudio06 hey, looks like you got your pup hopefully hows he doing? I just bought a German Shepard/ husky ( mostly German Shepard ) mix a week ago he loves it I do wish I could’ve adopted though
I'm a college student and I have a dachshund Blue heeler mix that's obsessed with peanut butter he used to absolutely hate going into his crate when I need to leave for classes now he loves it because I started mixing dry dog food and a little peanut butter to give him in the Kong now in the mornings instead of hiding he's bouncing in front of the crate waiting for his kong
rashelle97 crazy because I just bought it today and I got my Texas blue heeler last weeks and he’s 9 weeks today. Hope he will stop crying and barking in crate when I leave for school. Lol
@@joza3077 he goes in his crate because as soon as he finishes the kong he starts getting into stuff the kong only takes him about 30 minutes to empty and unfortunately I'm out of the apartment for 5 to 8hrs a day
KONGs are a GODSEND! I work from home and am on a lot of phone calls/conference calls with vendors and partners - I can not have my dogs start going batshit crazy because people are walking by our house. When I know I'll be on phonecalls, I will give them (I have two) a KONG toy stuffed mostly with their kibble and fill the remaining space with peanut butter or cheese whiz. They are completely engaged and focused on the KONG toy - no barking! I have 4 and there are always two in my fridge ready to go:)
I've been using a Black Kong with my dog for 10 years now and this is a fantastic idea I never thought of! This will be an awesome tool in my training of my next Doberman! Thank you!
“I’m gonna show you how to stuff it fast.” Immature me and my husband: 🤣 Great video by the way! Also, I use a small pink Kong for my indulgent cat. It’s helped keep her from gorging and puking when she eats!
Thank you for the advice. I have a labrabull pup and he is attachedbto me from when i get home from work till i leave. He is sweet and attentive but doesn't like any toys so i have taken your advice and bought him a Kong, 3 more are ordered. He has taken to it right away. I now feed him with it! I will continue to take your advise
This Kong toy saved my life. My Rottweiler is a big chewer and I could never leave him alone. And every toy I bought he and my other dog would destroy. And I bought 4 with that mindset of being able to rotate them!
I like using their dry food, but adding a bit of chicken broth with the water :) OH, GREAT tip about going to the next larger size kong, as Ive seen my pug struggle with releasing all the food from that small cavity, from the size we use...I'll get another one that's a bit larger!
Great video! Getting a rescue pup that’s 7 months old later this week! The Kong food toy in the crate will definitely be useful. Got spoiled having a crate trained dog and training another one will be a task!
We have many Kong toys, and still have the first one that I bought when Jekku was a puppy - he is now 9,5 years old. I use minst meat (sheep, cow, pork, chicken, reindeer..) for filling Kong toys. Many of dogfoods aren't best option at all and many of them contains too much of wheat, corn or rice.
@@discopumps they need around 70% meat. They have very short intestines and are naturally carnivores. In nature they would eat other animals intestines and thus the veg will be partially digested.
My staffie is great. She never tears into trash, never chews clothes or furniture, will even stay out of bedrooms and bathrooms unless invited in. But she hates being alone because before we rescued her, she was chained to a tree in a hoarding situation. Hopefully this method will help her regain more confidence when we can't be with her :)
he is absolutely right bout having a routine feeding schedule. I feed late in the day now that my puppy is older, i keep her food in my pocket as low reward treats. ( shredded wheat for high reward treats crazy pup!) But also by controlling her food, you to some extent control their potty schedule! Now maybe I can finally get her interested in the kong, heaven knows she's tearing up every amazon box i give her! lol! Thanks for this great tip, I hope its not too late , now that she's as big as I am! I love finding such valuable info online!
New Subscriber Here!!! THANK YOU!! This video just opened a whole new way for me and my pooch to see the Kong. DEF using this for crate training and alone time as she suffers from separation anxiety.
I love these kongs, keeps the dog busy! When my husband and I go eat at restaurant, instead of having our dog just sit there bored, we give her a kong! This keeps her busy during our meal time!
First time I took my newly adopted dog for a car ride I put peanut butter and treats inside to distract her a little while we were beginning our ride (she kept on trying to come up front). She did great in the end and she loves car rides! This was also really helpful, thank you. I might do this for her when I have to leave the house, she hates it when I leave. Following your channel for more helpful dog info
My dog used to SCREAM in the car. Partly upset because he couldn't be with me, but mostly because of being overexcited by the outside world and frustrated that he couldn't get out. My solution: Fill the boot of the car with towels and make it safe, and throw in a Kong. Immediately on the first drive he was silent.
Used it for my 10 wk old Boston Terrier's lunchtime feeding yesterday. It was GREAT! Took her quite a while to eat, and it entertained her while I was working (she's in a pen 2 feet away from me). This is going to be a gamechanger for me. Now if only I could get the tips from the puppy biting video to work as well lol.
Thank you! We get our new puppy in 3 weeks and I’m wanting her crate to be a happy place for her. Great ideas to get puppy to chew on what she’s supposed to and learn to settle on her own.
This is great! I appreciate the simplicity and using what would normally be low-tier reward in a way that 's highly rewarding. I've been using jerky strips that are too stiff for him to pull out at first, but after chewing and licking get soft enough that he can finally pull them out. But this method is much cheaper.
I just had to bit the Like and Subscribe button with your "Kiss" description. It made my day. Lol. I have a 2 yar. Old Chihuahua mix rescue and was so glad I bought a Kong. I love the Cream Cheese , dog food and freeze ideas. I do need to buy a couple more as well. I bought a big jug of those Chicken flavored Bone Marrow treats and bc they're more square at top and bottom I trim the corner edges of and they fit in much better, plus I leave a little sticking out so she gets and initial bite which makes her dig in for the rest. Although she does get frustrated when she can't get deep down in there as it breaks and drops down in further i usually end up poking a knife inside until it literally crumbles out.. Now I will put aine dry dog food inside and start with 1/2 of the Bone Marrow Treat just to get her started. It will save us both time and a little frustration in the end. Thank you so much. God Bless
.wow I so need to do everything you mentioned here. My greyhound and I are going through our 3rd week and she is reallly struggling with seperation anxiety...you might have given me the best advise !
Never be angry at you dog, you will get the opposite reaction. It's not its fault it doesnt understand what you want. check this out: ruclips.net/video/KrKEZIxFB64/видео.html
Just remember, all dogs need enough exersize. As a dog owner , it is a must to go with your dog. Not just around the corner and turn home when dog have pooped, but a real trip . They really need it , even the smallest ones. Every day ! Dont be lazy!
I never knew that free feeding dogs is a bad thing... I do measure their food out but I put it in their dishes in the morning and I don't refill it throughout the day. Once it's gone, it's gone for the day. I'm just curious as to why it's a bad thing? None of my dogs are overweight as you can see in the profile pic and videos on my channel and they're active as well, we exorcise them at least 3 times a week if not more if our schedules allow it. Is it just a behavioral thing? Also, how would you suggest training them to eat on a schedule?
Hi Jessica! Great questions. Just remember that no matter what I say, your mileage may vary. Every dog and family routine is a unique case. So, to the point: I recommend routine feedings because in most cases, free feeding creates picky eaters and it denatures the food so it loses some effectiveness as a tool to modify behavior. Plus, canines are designed to go with time between feedings; it's unnatural to have food available all the time so it destabilizes their metabolism's natural function as well as some behavior patterns. Thus, some dogs do indeed become overweight too. Finally, dogs' brains are hard-wired to love routines so having a routine becomes a behavioral pacifier in many ways, or at least contributes to it. Tons of mental benefits for the dog. If, in your home a) your dogs behave well and you can train them easily, b) they're not overweight, c) they don't have chronic behavior problems, and d) the routine as it is works for you, then YAY! Don't sweat it. Just in my experience, when people call with behavior problems like I listed in the video, they free-feed (i.e. keep the bowl full all the time) which short-circuits the benefits of the Kong. So, you have to adapt for your situation. Don't fix it if it ain't broke. If you're having problems that a Kong could address, I would recommend switching over to routine feedings. Easy to do. Feel free to message me if you feel that you want to. ;)
Simpawtico Dog Training Thank you!! Great response, I truly appreciate it. I have considered switching to scheduled feedings. I found your video to begin with because I'm going to purchase some KONG toys for my dogs. Reason being is because they've been chewing stuff up when we leave them alone in the house. I know which ones are responsible so I've started kenneling them but I don't want to have to do that..I would prefer that I can trust them to stay in the house without destroying stuff. I'm not sure if that's a behavior that scheduled feedings would help but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt... Regardless, I'm looking for toys that I can let them have to play with when we leave so they're pre occupied instead of trying to find other things to chew on... Like my flip flops and notebooks off of my desk lol I know lack of exorcise ins't the issue because one day we had taken them running in the morning and left after bringing them back home and when we got home they had chewed stuff up... We run them at least 3 times a week plus we have two kids 8 and 9 years old who play with them a lot plus they play among'st themselves every day too... I just think they need some mental stimulation. So maybe scheduled feeding would help with that. Anyways, I appreciate your feedback!
My pleasure! Good luck with everything. Take a look at my video on toys: ruclips.net/video/Ht8ncX4Kq7M/видео.html it discusses using toys for some of the things you're describing. Might give you some more ides to sew up those loose ends. ;)
Growing up my dog was free fed. He got all his food in the morning and would nibble all day. After about 10 years he started gobbling it up and we had to switch. My dog now I could never free feed. He would eat it all in minutes and beg all day. So like he said, do what's best for your pup and family.

Thank you for sharing!
For real ? Is he transformed now please my needs help

Thank you for this. My rescue pup has some severe fear and anxiety of being alone. We're really early into our adoption (day 3) but I know I need to work on a lot with him. You've given me hope.
Did you freeze his food as well inside the Kong?
Finally someone trains while speaking slowly and articulate

Great advice! Just tried this with my 3 month old puppy and had over 30 minutes of peaceful bliss as he chewed his little heart out, happy as anything and the constant little drops of food kept him interested. Brilliant canine ninja move
I’m glad you said that. Heading out to buy some for 2 puppies.
Jesus Christ, I just have my 3 month old puppy and it's nearly impossible to work from home with him, I didn't know this life saving thing existed.
Thank you.
I think, no dog should have any spay surgery before 12 or even more months.... I am shocked....
@@gudrun6286 I just ready that it is required in my "beloved" CA - at 4 months!

@@SimpawticoDogTraining how do you divide the pups meals if all but 1/3 of daily rations are put into one kong? Isn’t this the same as free feeding?
@@deborahslade5348 that’s a very good question, I wonder the same here.
@@deborahslade5348 I would think that it is not the same as using it with the Kong or similar toy, the dog has to earn it
Seriously, Kong should give these instructions out with the toy. The best thing that my old dog loved was the Kong frisbee, and I loved the fact that it took him 5 years to destroy it!
Yes we bought ours and were like, ok, how do we get the food to stay in it 😂
Just got that for my 3 month old GSD GREAT TO HEAR!
My thoughts exactly. I couldn't figure ot how to keep the food in. I thought they made special sized treats for it and was looking everywhere for them so I gave up. This video is a game changer
my dog loves shaking the shit out of that frisbee!!
Thanks!
My dogs aren't keen on PB!
I am a dog trainer and this is precisely how I do it. It makes crate training a puppy MUCH easier. Conditioning a young dog to love the crate is essential in my opinion. Great video.
Thanks, Dave!
Un-crate training is essential imo. Thank God he finally let go of that .
@@sarahalderman3126 wtf is un-crate training?
How do you get the kibble to stay inside without frozen water around it?
@@amandahope1981 Use peanut butter or something to cover the smaller hole.
I'd rather take pup out more often for potty than limit water and risk a bladder infection or digestive issues (water is very important for kibble digestion). Actually, the more pup drinks, the more opportunities you have to potty train. A pup will learn much faster with more repetition.
OH MY GOD THIS JUST BLEW MY MIND. I'm a new puppy owner and wanted to train how to crate effectively and to use Kong. This is great!
Same! Sometimes it takes more work, but he's even learned to watch me go out the door to take out the trash without trying to follow me out!
Interesting. Thanks.
I stuff my pups kong with dog food pate, I give her it every time I leave her in her crate and I have to go out ! Now she is super excited whenever I get the kong and runs into her crate because she knows she’s going to get her treat haha
Got myself a new puppy. That’s a good suggestion
Jennisney great idea!!!

For those that are curious, a size small Kong holds about a tablespoon of medium small kibble while the large size holds just under half a cup.
IrishCollegeGirl Extra small?
G B o what kind of dog?
This has kept my dog busy for hours and he’s finally eating his food. Thank you!!
You're welcome!
This is pure Dr. Ian Dunbar training, much of it word for word. It definitely works. Good job.

I used a kong for a foster puppy who was eating too fast and not putting on enough weight, it helped so much more than my usual methods.
Great use of that!
Xylitol is the biggest one you've got to look out for-it's bad news for a lot of dogs.
not the same in the US - we have loads that have anything BUT peanut butter! The rare ones that are pure cost an arm and a leg!!!
What peanut butter brand do you use? I live in the UK as well

Great feedback! Very good and productive use of Kongs!
Hallie Logan my puppy 80lbs and he's only 5months old pit bull mix with bull mastiff
Ugh can you be so kind to purchase just one for my Maltese. I kindly thank you 😊 lol have a great day.

@@teriwilloughby4353 keeps them busy. and I also buy frozen bones from butcher, thery go through store bones like crackers lol
I discovered this video very recently, and I now send this to all of my training clients as another resource to look to when I explain the benefits of using a kong. Thank you for putting together such a clear, concise, and simple explanation about kongs! It's really appreciated!
Kong
Greatest tip ever. Two days in on my puppy and he already loves the kong. I did exactly what you suggested even using cheap peanut butter, though I confess I just got two and now need to get two more. So happy I watched this before I got him. Thx again.
Glad it helped!
Thank you for this video.
food filled kongs got me through some tough times with my newf when he was younger
You posted this comment a year ago. Did the kong help?
How are things going?
If only I have seen this video a few weeks earlier 😭 literally saved my life
im getting a new puppy in a few weeks so ive been researching like crazy. I want him to be a happy and well adjusted puppy and ive heard these help with crate training. this video was awesome, thanks
I'm showing this to all my students! This is a perfect summary! Thank you for making this ✨
You're welcome!
I’m hoping you are a psychiatric professor. Long toys would cure 99.9% of mental disorders in humans. I’m sure of it.
That rope trick is genius; thank you
You just opened my whole world with this! Thank you!
You're welcome!
@@KevAng039
I only use a little peanut butter cause I don't want my dachshunds to get fat. I usually mix it in with the food so that the smell is on all the food, but it probably doesn't matter much. I think freezing it is the most important part.
How long do you soak the food in water before putting in king and freezing
I adopted a dog 5 days ago, and this has really saved me. Thank you thank you!!
I'm on day 5 with my 8 week old and he tried it for the first time today and loves it!
Along did you solely feed meals from kong only before transitioning back to bowl? Getting our rescue pup saturday
Lol
I'm a college student
Thats what the kong is for. You don't need to place him in a stupid cage no more.
@@joza3077 he goes in his crate because as soon as he finishes the kong he starts getting into stuff the kong only takes him about 30 minutes to empty and unfortunately I'm out of the apartment for 5 to 8hrs a day
You cannot imagine, how thankful I am for sharing this information with me!!! Thank You
You're very welcome!
This was a brill vid- thanks for sharing!
My two favorites! Love your music, relaxmydog :)
My pups love the Kongs with treats stuff in there but Hate peanut butter 😝🥜!
Why not just type normal. What does “brill vid- thanks” even mean lmaoo
@@inlinechrisit’s obvious what it means but okay
Is it? I didn’t see any actual examples
Thank you!
“I’m gonna show you how to stuff it fast.”
Immature me and my husband: 🤣
Great video by the way! Also, I use a small pink Kong for my indulgent cat. It’s helped keep her from gorging and puking when she eats!
This is the common sense, practical dog training advice I’ve been looking for.
Been watching your videos since before we brought our puppy home and I have learned a lot!
I have a new 4yo nervous rescue dog and the kong training video has helped us tremendously! Jack and I thank you.
You're both very welcome!
This Kong toy saved my life. My Rottweiler is a big chewer and I could never leave him alone. And every toy I bought he and my other dog would destroy. And I bought 4 with that mindset of being able to rotate them!
I like using their dry food, but adding a bit of chicken broth with the water :)
OH, GREAT tip about going to the next larger size kong, as Ive seen my pug struggle with releasing all the food from that small cavity, from the size we use...I'll get another one that's a bit larger!
Awesome! Good luck!
I freakin died when your adorable bug-eyed dog ran into its crate to wait for his/her kong
Boston terriers are great!
Awesome video. I bought the same Kong toy from Petcarerx recently and my dog cant get enough of it. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Great video! Getting a rescue pup that’s 7 months old later this week! The Kong food toy in the crate will definitely be useful. Got spoiled having a crate trained dog and training another one will be a task!
Good luck!!
We have many Kong toys, and still have the first one that I bought when Jekku was a puppy - he is now 9,5 years old. I use minst meat (sheep, cow, pork, chicken, reindeer..) for filling Kong toys. Many of dogfoods aren't best option at all and many of them contains too much of wheat, corn or rice.
quupeliini for cats this kind of grain diet is really bad but dogs actually need a diet higher in grains and less protein actually
Well of course that's why you have to choose a good dog food that obviously has no soy, corn or non natural ingredients
@@discopumps they need around 70% meat. They have very short intestines and are naturally carnivores. In nature they would eat other animals intestines and thus the veg will be partially digested.
discopumps who told you that?
if you have a no grain diet for your dog it can give them heart problems!!
I gave my 8 wk old puppy a KONG, now he's lvl 99 Dire Wolf.
A smidge of peanut butter will get him to 100
you mean he's half way to 100. LOL
@jimmyintheswamp what size did you end up getting?? I’m getting an 8 week puppy soon
OMG SOMEONE SEND HIM 100KONGS FOR THIS AMAZING JOKE LOL
New Subscriber Here!!! THANK YOU!! This video just opened a whole new way for me and my pooch to see the Kong. DEF using this for crate training and alone time as she suffers from separation anxiety.
I love these kongs, keeps the dog busy! When my husband and I go eat at restaurant, instead of having our dog just sit there bored, we give her a kong! This keeps her busy during our meal time!
iSaris you’re allowed to bring your dog to a restaurant?
If your eating why not your dog? do you use them when at work?
Nice!
beenbeen just don't forget him
beenbeen The boot of the car? Are you saying that you put your dog in the trunk of your car?
It's probably a 4x4 with a large boot with windows, not a saloon or hatchback car where the dog is shut in darkness xD
Luculencia You know the person and therefore know his automobile type?
Used it for my 10 wk old Boston Terrier's lunchtime feeding yesterday. It was GREAT! Took her quite a while to eat, and it entertained her while I was working (she's in a pen 2 feet away from me). This is going to be a gamechanger for me. Now if only I could get the tips from the puppy biting video to work as well lol.
Thank you! We get our new puppy in 3 weeks and I’m wanting her crate to be a happy place for her. Great ideas to get puppy to chew on what she’s supposed to and learn to settle on her own.
Good luck!!
I'll be honest dude... when I saw your earrings I thought there was no way I'd learn something useful... but honestly it was super useful
This is great! I appreciate the simplicity and using what would normally be low-tier reward in a way that 's highly rewarding. I've been using jerky strips that are too stiff for him to pull out at first, but after chewing and licking get soft enough that he can finally pull them out. But this method is much cheaper.
WHERE WERE YOU WHEN WE FIRST GOT OUR SPAWN OF SATAN? 😐I'm still going to try this. hope he digs it!
Good luck! :D
Simpawtico Dog Training WORKED gave it to him as his breakfast and it got me an extra half hour of sleep 😂
NICE! That's always a good thing! LOL
I'm buying a few of them tomorrow

Thanks sooo much, just went to buy one and my puppy loves it.
You are brilliant!!! This has saved me so much frustration and anger with my puppy!! Thank you!!!!
Every day !
Dont be lazy!
wow this is so helpful. subbed from this 1 video.i got my 1st dog, as an adult, yesterday. im excited to learn all these training techniques.
Take a look at my video on toys: ruclips.net/video/Ht8ncX4Kq7M/видео.html
it discusses using toys for some of the things you're describing. Might give you some more ides to sew up those loose ends. ;)
Simpawtico Dog Training Perfect, I'll check it out!
Growing up my dog was free fed. He got all his food in the morning and would nibble all day. After about 10 years he started gobbling it up and we had to switch. My dog now I could never free feed. He would eat it all in minutes and beg all day. So like he said, do what's best for your pup and family.
