We had a dog that was taught to treat his plush toys nicely. He passed away at 11 year of age this July. His favorite plush toy that he got for his second birthday now lives among my plush toys in rememberace of him.
I am astonished that you guys don't have more subscribers/views! This channel has been one of the highest quality and most informative channels I have ever seen about dig training. Keep up the awesome work, and hopefully much more success will come in the future!
Simpawtico Dog Training great video. So to be clear - the dog never mouths the plush toy or has it in their possession? It’s used as a tool to teach being gentle/easy?
After 10 videos now, I feel a lot more informed than I did after watching probably 5 years worth of „regular“ dog training videos. You perfectly strike the balance between concise and interesting. And I highly appreciate when the facts are backed up by science. Not to mention the high quality of the delivery and presentation. Keep it up, your content is phenomenal!
Thank you for providing comprehensive information in a well structured manner and reinforcing the instructions and tips with examples of you and your dog playing.
When this video was made 4 years ago I never dreamed I would have pets. I have 2 puppies and I'm binge watching your videos. Thank you! Stay safe and healthy. Merry Christmas!
As usual, I learn more from you in a 15 minute video than I've learned from a lifetime of having dogs and reading books on dog training. I sought out this particular video because my 6 month old rat terrier has just destroyed, in a few short days, all the plush toys that he has so gently and lovingly played with since I brought him home at 8 weeks. I knew the problem was something I wasn't doing. It always is. No longer will I be missing these opportunities! Thanks Ian!
I let my dog out of her crate every morning to use the bathroom outside.. she comes in I get her food and water ready.. she runs to her crate and stays put while I bring her food and water to her. We are still working on potty training and getting on counters though
I read that puppies should be in their crate as long as you cannot supervise them directly, such as if you're making dinner, you're taking a shower, etc. and, The crate should never be used as a punishment.
Excellent advice! I eliminated the squeaky toy and my puppy was a lot less crazypants during playtime. I also introduced rewarding behaviour with her food during play and today I tried the frozen Kong method during my absence and the dogs were super into it. Two thumbs up!
Wow, I had no idea the different toy types were to be used differently. This changes everything. My puppy (8 months) has been destroying all of her plush toys so we just stopped giving them to her. I'm very excited to try the training you mentioned here and using it to teach her to be gentle!
I have a 5 months old Australian Shepherd puppy. He’s been destroying all of the plush toys. Thank you for this video, a total game changer now. I subscribed and very happy I came across your channel. Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
This is beyond interesting! Finally a channel that makes sense and explains the reasons behind certain behaviours! Going to take trading to a whole new level! A thank you ✨
I just discovered this channel yesterday and it has been a lifesaver. We just brought home a 12w giant breed puppy and planned to do training once the puppy got adjusted. When I watched these videos on the biting, I was STUNNED, that all your tips worked!!!! I stay glued to this channel and I'm getting a wealth of excellent information on my puppy and how HE thinks and receives information...thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!
Just binged on all your videos. I learned something new with every one! A video on chew toy training would be much apprectiated. My doberman will pretty much only chew on the edible chew toys, which ofcourse last about 5 minutes. Meanwhile he ignores the other kinds of chew toys while still being obessed with non-doggie things like shoes and whatever else he can get ahold of.
My dog trainer hooked me up with your site. I'm so excited with ways I can reinforce the dog training my 6 mth. old American Eskimo male pup. He was kept in a kennel for 5 months before we purchased him. So many issues with him coming into an home environment, so many new things to chew on, a whole new wide eyed world with a puppy highly energized with owners who are senior citizens. With the help of Mandeville Canine Academy, Ted Carlson, we don't have to return a pup to breeder. The first two weeks were horrific, then we enrolled him for a month of classes with Ted. Ted is doing marvelous with a shy, fearful and untrained energetic pup. I'll be watching more of your utube videos. Thanks for sharing with the public. God bless, Barbara
I needed this! I have search all over for training puppy videos and I couldn’t fond nobody! They all was not working You are the best!!!!!!!!! On top of that I cant afford to pay someone to train him for me this was truly a blessing! You are saving pets and people relationships with each other. Thank you!
I almost never subscribe after watching a video, but this is one of those rare moments. I love my dog, and I love learning how I can be a better dog parent. This video was exactly what I was looking for (I Googled, “How to utilize dog’s favorite toy”). Thanks for the awesome content! Can’t wait to try and make the most of these training opportunities!
This video was a slap to the face! Soooo much logical information in here. Imagine my despair though when looking at the toys my dog owns: a tug-of-war plushie, and ohwait, another tug-of-war plushie...
I signed up for an on-line training program which I found repetitive. She has a very big house, she is a professional dog trainer, the entire bottom floor is devoted to training with numerous pens and has a huge yard. She also uses exclusively, it would seem, goldendoodles which are very easy to train. She also is pretty repetitive and doesn't address other environments to any great extent. I watched one video of Simpawtico on Down, which my Goldendoole was struggling with, and from your suggestions he was doing Down within about ten tries. I am going to watch more of your videos. They provide a little extra detail and are just more enjoyable for me and concise. My goldendoodle is very smart and easy to trin but I need more than this other program can offer. Thanks!!!
your videos are so easy to watch, i greatly appreciate them! videos from other trainers are good too, but it's really hard to retain the information with the long and extended presentations.. so this is honestly great for people like me who may have issues with such things!
@@SimpawticoDogTraining Thanks. He has a way to go. Still getting use to his new home and becomes scared and runs and hides. Somedays I can keep his attention long enough to take a baby step forward in training. At least we have potty training down. He still avoids his crate but I use a Kong toy to get him inside but don't close the door as he runs right out.
We just got a new puppy (German Shepherd/Husky mix) and I am determined to train her correctly from the get-go. These videos are so informative and helpful. I am looking forward to employing your advice and techniques for training. Thanks so much!
Hi Sara, we are also getting a new puppy in a few days, German shepherd/Husky. Since you’ve had your for nearly a year now, can you plz tell us how your experience has been and some words of advice plz?
New subscriber here, I really like how you describe the differences between the dogs toys. I've been having issues with my somewhat new pup, he is a terror at night when we're trying to relax & sleep, we've tried taking him out later before bed, then playing with him before & after dinnertime, but he continues to torture the cats who want nothing to do with him ever, he's a big boy so I think they are kind of afraid of him, he keeps us awake wanting to play @ 2am or 3am, significant has to get up for work @ 4am so it's very hard to get a good night sleep, but I think giving him the Kong when it's time for bed is a good idea, I sure hope it works & keeps him content through the night. Thank you for a great description on how to use the Kong toys.
You are literally the best dog channel I’ve come across. I’m enthralled by your videos, am I being trained??! Haha Great content, subscribed immediately. 😁
getting a Silky pup soon....lost my 14yr old Silky last month, he was not ''trained'' but was a great buddy.!!!!!Shooting for a ''trained'' buddy this time. so watching lots of vids, I get it..you get what you put in.!!!!!
I'm about to get my first own dog and your videos are so lovely and informative! My sisters dog has been with me for a while now and i've been training him successfully thanks to you and other channels like yours! But you definitely have a fun personality and talk really nicely!
I just happened to find this while searching for dog toy "issues". I have the sweetest King Charles ever and the only thing he destroys is his toys. You have completely changed my outlook and I will be working on this with him! I will be watching more of your videos. Thank you SO much!
I cannot thank you enough for this video! I have ten toys out lying around and had no idea this was incorrect. I've just fostered a four to six month old rescue puppy. She's a jack Russell terrier mix (Singapore Special) so very intelligent and I've been tearing my hair out! Only had her for five days and I literally cried with frustration. She is stubborn, bites, jumps, rips stuff apart etc, even with three to four walks a day plus balcony play time. I'm now going to spend the day watching all of your videos... THANK YOU SO MUCH!
First time puppy adopter here! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! It's helping us every day with training our beagle-rottie. Keep up the great work!
Wow. I just saw you for the first time. I just learned SO MUCH that I wish I knew 1 year ago when we got our new puppy. We just got a second one and I am sharing these to all the household members so we can all learn!! This will make life easier.
Evidently we use them wrong! lol We jut got a new rescue 6 month old pup. So here I am searching for training ideas! Great videos. I am hoping for great success! Thanks!!
I appreciate your videos greatly - bringing my Aussie pup home in a few weeks, and these have helped me feel more prepared. Aussie's are very intelligent and high energy breeds so I wanted to take advantage of that and put her through a full training regime, but wasn't sure where to start.
I just want to say, you have saved my life. Actually no I’m stupid. You have saved my dogs life. Don’t know why you don’t have more subs but keep going !!
Wow, had no idea about the toys. Wish I'd found this 9 months ago when I first got my puppy. Still good info for an 11-month old pup though! Love how you present the info with a sense of humor.
Love your videos. Discovered them a few weeks ago. This might be the most helpful yet! Going between the tug toy and plushie toy is definitely something that I haven't seen before.
I’ve been watching so many different dog trainers, just found your channel and have been binge watching ! Love your videos and how you break everything down in a doable way!
You give me such Ryan Reynolds vibes and that's an ultimate compliment. In addition to that, these are such informative videos. Thank you so much for the time and care you put into them.
I just got a puppy and can slap myself on the face and not give myself a treat because I was doing a medioccre job! Best informative dog channel on the platform.
This was one of the most helpful videos I have seen so far. I Have been researching getting a puppy for the past 1.5 years and just adopted my puppy a couple days ago. I can't believe I haven't found your channel until now!
Now that makes sense, thank you so much for this great info! My question is how to get a dog to engage in playing? My rescue is very motivated by food, but toys he can leave it or take it... not very interested at all, and I would love to get him moving more with some good old fashioned fetch.
Thanks for the video! I loved how you organized the content and concepts to be structured and intentional, which is helpful for people like me who needs structured and schematic instructions for greater understanding. The visual aspects and practice session was also great to exemplify the concepts. Nicely done.
Your videos are awesome! And great editing btw. That part around 1.40 where the dog is sniffing the different toys blends perfectly with the narration. That was so cool
I just discovered your channel and I have a new puppy. You make so much sense and have stopped me from doing counter-active training with my pup. Thank you.
I'm BINGING your channel. I love how you explain your reasoning behind the psychology. My first puppy after 3 decades of exotic reptile keeping and breeding. I can read body language, just don't know the cues or how to behave myself. Can't tell you how beneficial these are for me! I want to do it right, and there's SO much signal/noise about what to do. This logical approach is my jam!
I’ve had dogs my whole life (I’m old) and have trained them fairly well. I happened upon this video and have always know that different dog toys are used for different reasons. However, I never thought about how much more effectively (and properly) they could be used for actual training. I highly recommend all dog owners to watch and USE these training methods!
Twice a day ought to be sufficient. There's not a hard and fast rule about how often, but you do a) want to end on a high note, and b) end it before they get tired of it (leave them wanting more) so I wouldn't do more than twice a day, for about three to five minutes at a time.
Omg I officially adopted my sisters maltipoo and this is going to help me so much . He has issues with being overly excited and jumping on me when he sees me , also other things that I will work with him on . Soaking in all the information I can .
I just discovered your channel. Great videos and great philosophy. Hopefully you can clear up a few points I am still not clear with. I watched chew toy training and this video on toys. In what situation are squeaking toys allowed? I am not clear on the plush toys. I understand teaching them not to destroy them. Do you ever allow the pooch to have a plush toy in their mouth? Fetch maybe? Otherwise I don't understand why they are even sold as dog toys. Thank you.
Just found this channel will be working with all this with my recently adopted malamute thank you I see us fixing a Lott of his bad habits his previous owners thought him with all your wonderful information.
Awesome lesson for plush toys. I never read or watched something like this, to handle with this kind of toy. Other thing I do, is gave the plush toys for the bed time, so the dog knows it's time to relax, and sleep until the next day.
Hey Ian, I found your channel a few days ago and its been a fantastic tool for teaching my dogie, as a first time dog owner (just adopted a six months old German shepherd dog) I don´t know what I would have done with out them keep doing what you do =) PD: does this mean I shouldn't let him play with the plushie at all? just look at it?
That's my recommendation. As always, your mileage will vary. If your dog can play with it without destroying it, no worries. If you start to see your dog dissecting it, time to reevaluate and teach them no to do that. Same with squeakers. My new dog came with some squeak toys and she's crazy for them. However, she's not destroying them at all. So even though I don't recommend squeakers in general, my own dog is fine with a squeak toy. Every case is unique, you know?
I am a new puppy owner and now a new subscriber. Thank you for your videos. I was doing the *"allow your dog access to the entire basket of toys"* thing and after about 2 weeks he was completely bored of them all and wanting to play only with me (without any toys). I noticed he started biting harder when playing. I have a lot of changes I need to make and I thank you for your videos!
I totally agree.... I'm truly fascinated by this concept but would love to learn more so that I could actually share my own personal favorite plushies with my dog without it being killed.....
Just wanted to say thank u for the vids. Im not a dog person at all but have found myself in a situation where im now in charge of an untrained young australian shepherd and ur videos have been a godsend for novices like me! Easy to follow, straight to the point, and simple for us dog novices or no frills kind of people. Thanks again!!
What if you have a Husky/Shepherd/Lab mix?? My puppies haven't chewed up their plush toys. They're only 11 weeks old, so going to start teaching them now good manners.
Ive watched a lot of dog videos and your production is great along with your lessons ive had a kong and never thought about using it to feed my dog such a great idea thank you
I learned a bad lesson years ago.NEVER buy stuffed animal toys/ plush for a dog EVER! My vet would ban them if he could. The fiber full is DEADLY! Even if they don't chow down on it, they can become deadly. My dog loved to rip them apart never eating the stuffing and making my yard look like I was growing fiber fill as a hobby. Little did I know he was getting small amounts in his stomach over the years. One day he stopped eating and drinking. The stuffing had accumulated in his gut, got infected and he was becoming septic. I tell everyone never buy these for your dog. Thankfully they now have them without the fiber fill. My dog survived without surgery and a week in the hospital and a $2,000 bill for ICU. So LOVE your idea to reach the dog it's alive and not kill it.
Koakoa45 my dog loves his stuffed animals but I think I’m going to get rid of them because he does love to chew on them and I’m afraid he might choke since he loves to eat anything .
I have been watching a lot of videos about dog training and toy training, and this video came up on auto play when I had walked away. I'm shocked I haven't seen any of your other videos before! I've watched a lot of videos over the years for help with dogs, but this video about using toys appropriately has to be the most educational one I've seen. With my last dog, I definitely had no idea how to use toys, and I just never bought plush toys for the dog or even understood why they existed because she'd immediately tear them up every time. Now I understand, it seems so obvious after you spelled it out, but like, it wasn't haha.
We had a dog that was taught to treat his plush toys nicely. He passed away at 11 year of age this July. His favorite plush toy that he got for his second birthday now lives among my plush toys in rememberace of him.
This video should be the LAW for ANY puppy buyers! There is SO much salient content in this video!!
Thank you!
Can I just say it is soooooo refreshing to see a english bulldog and boston terrier at a healthy weight
Thanks! I want them around as long as possible and being overweight will not help!
My Boston was a mere 19 lbs. The vet always said how nice it was that she actually looked the way a BT should.
Just tried this and it INSTANTLY worked, thank you!
You're welcome! Happy it helped!
This is probably the most in-depth Dog Training channel I’ve found.
Thanks!

Hey Abdullah! Thank you SO MUCH for the compliment! I will definitely keep plugging away. Welcome aboard! :D

We just rescued a stray Staffy, and this is exactly what I needed to learn to help my mom keep him under control while I'm at work!
So this is my second video I've watched, the first being the kong video and I'm like "holy shit I wish I had found you earlier to train my puppy!"

3 years later, they got me with the same 2 videos....magic.

I just want to say, you have saved my life. Actually no I’m stupid. You have saved my dogs life. Don’t know why you don’t have more subs but keep going !!
You're not stupid. We do the best we can with the tools we have available. I'm happy if I added some tools that were useful. Onward and upward, right?
Wow, had no idea about the toys. Wish I'd found this 9 months ago when I first got my puppy. Still good info for an 11-month old pup though! Love how you present the info with a sense of humor.
Love your videos. Discovered them a few weeks ago. This might be the most helpful yet! Going between the tug toy and plushie toy is definitely something that I haven't seen before.
I'm getting a Dogue de Bordeaux rescue in a couple weeks, I have been watching your videos and learned so much! thank you!
Cool! Good luck and congratulations! And you're welcome!
Wow, thank you!
I just got a puppy and can slap myself on the face and not give myself a treat because I was doing a medioccre job! Best informative dog channel on the platform.
Best information about dog training available on the internet right now.
Great advice, thank you! We have just started fostering pound dogs, so this will be great for the four month old puppy guest we currently have.
My rescue is the same way! 2 years old. Doesn’t care about toys. Doesn’t pull the stuffing out. Loves food! Will do anything for food.
did you guys figure it out?
Thanks for the video! I loved how you organized the content and concepts to be structured and intentional, which is helpful for people like me who needs structured and schematic instructions for greater understanding. The visual aspects and practice session was also great to exemplify the concepts. Nicely done.
Glad it was helpful! This is one I'm going to update this year. Keep an eye out!
Your videos are awesome! And great editing btw. That part around 1.40 where the dog is sniffing the different toys blends perfectly with the narration. That was so cool
Thanks!
I just discovered your channel and I have a new puppy. You make so much sense and have stopped me from doing counter-active training with my pup. Thank you.
great advice, i am making a few mistakes, your advice should help loads, Thanks ! :)
You're welcome! Glad I could help!
I highly recommend all dog owners to watch and USE these training methods!
this is best dog channel hands down !
Thanks!
I'd been taught the opposite so I'm glad I found this
I was told to leave out plush all the time. And keep the chew toys up
Sir, I have just watched two videos of yours. Your videos are so engaging hand have a amazing production quality! Thank you! You have me subscribed!
How often should I initiate an interactive play session? Once a day? Or twice a day? Or more often than that? My little man is 10 weeks now
Twice a day ought to be sufficient. There's not a hard and fast rule about how often, but you do a) want to end on a high note, and b) end it before they get tired of it (leave them wanting more) so I wouldn't do more than twice a day, for about three to five minutes at a time.
You are knowledgeable and videos are fabulous
. Thank you from New Zealand
Omg I officially adopted my sisters maltipoo and this is going to help me so much . He has issues with being overly excited and jumping on me when he sees me , also other things that I will work with him on . Soaking in all the information I can .
I’m getting my first puppy on 12/23/17 and your videos have really helped me out and given me guidance. Thank you!!
You're welcome!
If I could give this video one additional like, I'd definitively do it! Very good explaniation!
So happy I found your channel, great content and tips! Just got a 8w Frenchie and these videos are super informative. Thank you 🙏🏻
Plush Toy Segment... BOOM! Mind Blown! :O ... really good content. Thank you.
Your content is SO helpful. Thank you for sharing this with the world, what a gift of knowledge!
You're so welcome!
Thats a great note!
Another awesome video. Thank you so much for uploading such well-made, informative videos!
Glad you like them!
Hey Ian, I found your channel a few days ago and its been a fantastic tool for teaching my dogie, as a first time dog owner (just adopted a six months old German shepherd dog) I don´t know what I would have done with out them keep doing what you do =)
PD: does this mean I shouldn't let him play with the plushie at all? just look at it?
That's my recommendation. As always, your mileage will vary. If your dog can play with it without destroying it, no worries. If you start to see your dog dissecting it, time to reevaluate and teach them no to do that. Same with squeakers. My new dog came with some squeak toys and she's crazy for them. However, she's not destroying them at all. So even though I don't recommend squeakers in general, my own dog is fine with a squeak toy. Every case is unique, you know?
Got it, Thanks! =)
Good luck with everything! Start small and do a little each day. You got this!
Your videos are fantastic! My puppy won't chew on any of the chew toys, the only things she likes to chew are plush toys! How do I change this?
Hi Lulu! Great question! I'm actually going to address that in one of the next vids.
Thanks! Looking forward to it!
this video is 4 years old and i only watched it now....VERY INFORMATIVE! SUBCRIBED!
Can you go into more detail on teaching a dog to not kill a plush toy? My Carolina Dog puppy thrashes them to death, then pulls out the stuffing
You're so welcome! Thank you for sharing and I'm glad I could help!
Plush toys should never be torn apart ever. Unless you have a Husky, then forget it, the toy is toast.
...or a Labrador Retriever. I have plenty of Mr. Toys with their insides out.
or a German Shepherd Dog...they rip everything apart.
What if you have a Husky/Shepherd/Lab mix?? My puppies haven't chewed up their plush toys. They're only 11 weeks old, so going to start teaching them now good manners.
YEP! And second that for Malamutes. These sled dog breeds haven't been changed much from their wolf ancestors.
Ive watched a lot of dog videos and your production is great along with your lessons ive had a kong and never thought about using it to feed my dog such a great idea thank you
You're welcome!
Indeed...those toys are destroyed quickly by German Shepherd Dogs.
As it says in this video, plush toys should always be supervised. Thanks for helping to make this point !
@Michelle-eu5eu as it says in the video, soft toys should always be supervised and played with as training
