Simpawtico Dog Training - *This is outstanding advice,* which confirmed/reinforced some thoughts, most my mom taught me as a child thru raising several puppies (puppy play/learning & teaching each other boundaries, especially when taken from parents so young - I learned/surmised recently via interactions between siblings: play escalated to a viscous fight, then back to & remained playful n loving since - one n done!) & clarified some misconceptions (ie, it's not about "teething"!) - *made a ton of logical sense!* (tho I know very well there's a severe deficit in common sense). So glad I found it only a week after getting a 6 week old pup with pointed razor (demon) teeth, lol! 😲😃 *AND thank you SOOO much for being SHORT, direct n TO THE (fn) POINT!* (cannot stand all these drawn out blah-blah-blah videos, generally speaking, which most never even get to a point or if they do it's like 20-200 mins later)... Speaking of, I'm sure these videos are helpful to some people, but I have been searching for ages and can't find any tips on how to stop biting my dog. A human training video would be great.
I adopted a puppy that was taken from her mother too young. She has serious issues and biting was a huge first obstacle. Any interaction sends her energy through the roof and praising her was horrible. In a few short days she has learned to slightly nip instead of drawing blood. Its going to be a long road but we have taken the first step. THANK YOU!

My pup, 3 months, doesn't pull away no matter how outchy it gets. I have tried leaving the room but I am open plan and that leaves him free rein in a place where he should be watched - any ideas?
THIS DOES WORK we have a puppy German Shepherd and he was a little confused at first but he is getting the hang of it and now he’s so much more calmer around guests

The last time I had a puppy to train, we didn't have so many resources to learn from, but we did fairly well with ours. With all the free info available nowadays, people have no excuse for not properly training their dogs.
i have a lot of respect for this guy and his work. he's smart, thoughtful, and obviously loves these dogs. it's clear he cares about them being happy and healthy. i support this entirely.

This video has set me so at ease I can't begin to tell you. Everything I'm reading about bite inhibition is about focusing on stopping the behavior. I'd gotten myself so whipped up I was panicking every time he bit me that he is going to wind up aggressive and mean. I finally starting doing timeouts because he's really mangling my hands and I am desperate. Someone on Reddit suggested this video - I started working with him as suggested and saw improvement in LITERAL MINUTES. I could cry. I know this is a long process that will take some time and see ups and downs, but this video completely shifted my perspective on the behavior. THANK YOU thank you thank you

Just got a 9 week old pug. I had no idea about this. I was under the impression that if I let him bite me he will be nippy as an adult and around kids. This really changed my perspective and now my wife and I will suffer through knowing this will make him a better dog in the future. THANKS SIR!

Oh my Goodness! I literally just had a meltdown and started crying because my puppy is hurting me soooo much when he play bites! I’ve organically used the crying method and it sometimes works, but some details in this video like do not remove your hand and reward him when he steps back are a pure revelation! I’m going to try this method asap! I have a trainer and puppy classes but they advised doing the distraction method when you ask your puppy to play with a toy instead of biting you! How stupid!!!! Makes total sense! Puppies let each other know if they hurt each other... even their mom teaches them this. This guys right on! They do grow out of it and it does stop eventually... work on taking food away also from a very very young age... bite inhibition! Great definition of the soloution...!!! Love this guy!!! I'm really finding all these videos instructive and helpful. Biggest issue is our 10 week old Boxer puppy, Sasha, who was weaned too soon as we got here at 7 weeks, just keeps biting harder and more excited when we try to say ouch over and over. She also tries to rip our hand off like it's a toy she can run off with. She doesn't rear back like in the video when we actually get her attention with higher pitched "ouches", doesn't remove her mouth from our hand, and looks at us like she wants us to be quiet while she chews. We're starting obedience training a week from this Sunday but are desperate for help now as she's drawing blood constantly!
@@mekahs1600 unfortunately not but now that she's almost 1.5 years old and we started having time outs when she gets too excited and wants to bite she's getting better. Her excitement quickly turns to aggressive play we think because of her early life experiences and lack of socialization with her momma to teach those all important lessons.
@@BWDavisV to be real with you, this is most likely because your dog is lacking correction. I know there’s a huge positivity only training community out there and I think it’s great, really. But as you can see, 1.5 years and your dog can still be dangerous. The mom would have corrected your dog, so why shouldn’t you (it’s new mom)
He did say if the ouches don't work, leave the room immediately without speaking. Once they're deprived of your attention/presence completely they will understand (possibly after a few leavings) that if they bite, you go, so no more game. I've seen the leaving work on 'Dogs Behaving (very) Badly" on TV.

By far,this is the best video on the internet that addresses and explains why puppies bite and how to handle it. I have used the techniques in this video on my 9 weeks old German Shepherd puppy who is now 14 weeks and it worked wonders. I now have a very well behaved Strong pupp when it comes to biting.
Im an architecture student and im currently working on how to improve the typical animal shelter to a better and more effective center so that stray animals can enjoy and heal faster. Ted Castrence number one way they could improve- they need to be built to reduce acoustics. All that cement and block construction to keep things sanitary causes the place to be loud. The dogs bark and it echoes the cats cry and it echoes and the animals get ten times as stressed as they would be if it could be more quiet. I always feel like there should be water fountains to help with the noise and I don’t know about ceiling and wall construction much or how helpful baffling is, or soundproofing that is cost effective-but in my kennel experience (20 yrs) this is one of the biggest issues next to sanitary and quarantine issues for health

Most other videos I've found just teach to walk away and/or redirect the biting to a toy. My dude! This video completely changed the way my wife and I deal with our 11 week old Patterdale Terrier and her prolific tendencies to bite anything her mouth will fit around. Her biting for the most part has dulled somewhat, she does however have a habit of getting lost in her zoomies, but she is learning. slowly, but progress is progress. We're both super glad we found this video out of the plethora of useless ones on the subject, most of which just promote redirection. Hugest thanks from the three of us!!

FINALLY! Something that actually works 😭😭 I unfortunately messed up somewhere! If I say “ow” he either bites more softly, licks it, or completely let’s go. When I follow up with “Good boy!” He takes it as an invitation to bite me again 😭 instead I just pat him light and stay silent unless if he bites again I say “ow!”
Forced compliance has its place. This is standard in military training. Military trained dogs are almost always noticeably more compliant than civilian trained dogs. My own training philosophy draws heavily from the teachings of Konrad Most. He outlined the principles of operant conditioning 30 years before BF Skinner. His methods are in use almost universally for training military and law enforcement animals. Those dogs will never bite anyone unless the handler orders it, yet they are some of the meanest, toughest dogs in the world.

I got my puppy when she’s already 7 months old, and she apparently hasn’t been trained in bite control at all with humans. Now what? Actually, a few days later it’s going really well. Soft mouth, less often, only at predictable times. Thanks!
We just rescued a seven-month-old full blooded chocolate lab and she too play bites but her play bite is pretty strong and painful. She is sleeping right now but when she wakes up and starts play biting, I'm going to try this technique and see if it works. I really hope it's not too late to teach and instill this training technique with her. She's a wild child for sure! I'm working on a lot of different things with her and I don't want to confuse her with too much at once. But the biting has to ease up some. I'm afraid to let her around any kids or other people. I'm really working on leash training hard with her so I can run her and take walks instead of her only running around our yard on a leash run ( we have an underground fence , but is not working. My husband is trying to fix it. She wants to run me instead of me running her. I've been watching videos about all types of training but especially about biting and leash training. This video was great because it gives us the foundation of why puppies bite to start with. I always assumed it was for teething purposes! I'm going to also see if this channel has any good videos on leash training.

I’m in the same situation as you! Mini-Aussie just turned 4 months old and his biting can be rough sometimes, especially when he wants our attention to play. We thought redirection was the first step, but this video taught me that force of bite should be corrected first. How did your dog turn out?

Wow! Kolby is 5 mos, a heeler/shepherd vocal & a mouther/nipper, biter. How I wish I had seen this 2 mos ago. It makes 100% sense & if I had been consistent with what actually seemed to work, this method that noone else has taught, we would be done with this behavior. Will now be 100% consistent as the time/learning/puppyhood is going fast. Thank you so much.

I found this video in a Reddit thread at r/pitbulls just after we found our abandoned 7-week-old bully-mix. I had my whole family watch it and we practiced bite inhibition training with him. I won't lie, sometimes it was really hard because those puppy teeth are SHARP. But it WORKED. Now that he is 7 months old and 65 lbs - he has a very gentle mouth and NEVER bites hard, even when very excited. This should be mandatory viewing for every new puppy owner.

I finished watching and I was like "no way this can actually work". Boooiiii was I wrong! It worked instantly. I couldn't believe my lil monster really readjusted his bitting force immediately. Omg it's working. 😲 Finally some hope! Maybe she's not a bloodthirsty psychopath after all. Thank you so much for providing the full technique; just yelping was making her go for me even harder, and it's been a long first 6 weeks. I look like I wrestled a barbed wire fence. When I put on and take off her leash, and often when I pick her up she goes super berzerko. What should I be doing when she clamps down super hard? I usually use my other hand to pry her mouth open and free my limb or hair. Food doesn't phase her in those moments. Is this totally ass-backwards? Those are the times she's most likely to lunge at my face, also. I'll do an exaggerated gasp and say her name in a "How could you!?" tone, but not shockingly, this doesn't seem to have much impact. I desperately want to enjoy my dog, especially in this fleeting puppy phase, and bond with her in the way that creates a steadfast sidekick, but I feel like I'm failing miserably. I'm glad I found this channel. I'll definitely keep watching.
We just got our puppy two weeks ago. Lordy I forgot how hard they are to train about biting. I've never had a dog that liked to bite my hair quite like this one. I was beginning to think I had the only puppy that liked to bite hair. I'm glad I found this channel. Maybe it will work. Lotsa luck too to you.
@@carolpearce7755 Mine likes to cuddle up on my pillow, oozing with cuteness, then nuzzles my head and starts ripping the hair out of my scalp. Little psychopath. She goes for it anytime it's within range, and that will be the next focus for us. I think a good strong stay and leave it is the answer, but there could be something else. The method in this video took care of the biting within a couple weeks, thankfully, and making sure she is good and worn out from exercise a few times a day has made a world of difference. Both in general behavior and in how quickly she picks up on training. I was too casual about it before, and I'm glad I understand that now. If I find a good, solid method of eliminating the hair thing, I'll come back and link it here. Good luck with your training! You're not alone!
Girl, I'm with you. My baby is adorable but I too look like the fence won. He bit my nose and he just bit my lip lunging at my face! ! Which brings me to this video. He's asleep right now I'm gonna try it when he wakes up! 🙏🙏🐶
@@thevisualvixen2522 I am confident you'll be successful with this technique! The face lunging, in my opinion, was a serious potential danger and something I knew I had to address with an iron fist. Every time it happened, without fail, and any time teeth touched my face, I would freeze, all play would immediately stop, and I would look her in the eye and gasp, saying her name in that melodramatic "how could you!?" tone, and I'd turn away from her or walk away. It totally worked. She just had her first birthday 2 weeks ago and these days, when we're snuggle-playing or something, and she gets too close to my face, she knows it. As soon as she realizes she's grazed me, she kinda pauses and looks at me like she's saying, "Oops, sorry." I'll usually just do a sharp inhale for the sake of consistency, and she self-corrects and and calms it down. I no longer have to keep my hair pulled up, also, and it's longer than ever. I just did the same thing as in the video, as though it hurt me super bad. Same with clothes. Problem solved. One thing I want to share that I don't think a lot of folks think about with training treats - we have one brand of food for regular feeding, and a totally different brand to use for training. Don't get sucked into spending a fortune on anything fancy; Anything that's not what's in their bowl, they're going to get excited about and think its a treat. I'd love to hear about your progress! @@lisakukla459 OMG, the first sentence had me laughing sooo hard, too funny. I know the feeling, I can see it on my puppy's face when he's about to attack. I am doing these techniques when he wakes up from his nap, he is such an angel when he's tired, but can be completely gonzo at times.
Really great. 3 month old Aussie, we've been on the right track more or less - But we've been "protecting" our senior Lab (11 years) from our landshark; This video is terrific and reminded me that the absolute best teachers of bite inhibition are....other dogs with good bite inhibition. Bob (our Lab) is super patient but when he reaches his limit, he gives a good snarl and shows those pearly whites. She backs off and looks at him in stunned admiration. We'll be doing more of this! im gonna try these tips and update on how it goes my puppy - Candy , Half Chihuahua half Pekingese ( about to be 9 weeks old ) Edit: I promised I would update! This works wonders!!! I've tried everything in the book up until this video my puppy was crazy and out of control and now she's barely bites and if she does it's very softly. Sometimes she still bites to hard but using this method stops her right away
I finally had a chance to put this into play with my son’s puppy. I was not timing it with him but this is effective training for the puppy. I have 4 senior dogs that other family members, who did not watch this video separated the puppy from them. I took him to the backyard and 3 of the 4 dogs and it worked within a few minutes and he was responsive to my feedback
My 5mo Amstaff was chewing through my skin. This technique stopped it in 15 minutes. He never wanted to hurt or frustrate me, but I didn’t know the best way to tell him how to NOT hurt or frustrate me. This is gonna sound weird, but it felt like we understood each other. its mind blowing that no one knows this... even Animal Humane Society told me to “redirect with a chew toy” Ive had so many dogs and no one ever mentioned play biting vs. teething. EDIT: (May 2020, redirecting with a toy worked better for me)
Live And Inspired No actually, i did it with my dog and it worked. his technique did nothing though. My dog bit so much she got returned by 2 families, but i stuck to the toy redirecting and it worked.
Well, in the video he does make a difference between biting to regulate and biting to get attention. If your dog was old enough that it wasn't regulating (Ian said about 7 months) then clearly the technique isn't going to work. It's a different scenario.

I’m currently over at my neighbor’s house, they got a puppy two weeks ago and I’m watching him while they’re at work. He’s a very sweet puppy who rarely bites but when he’s playing, your tips come very much in handy.
ericksamaniegofit Well firstly, congratulations on getting a puppy, a malinois will make you a great dog when trained properly. I have to say though that I hope you started bite training asap because, as I’m sure you know, malinois are known to act like puppies for most of their lives. My pup, who just turned a year, didn’t fully understand the concept of biting too hard until he was around 3-4 months, when we neutered him. That said, he was a rescue and a product of bad breeding so he does have some serious temperamental issues we are still dealing with (one of the reasons we got him clipped so early). Just make sure to correct your puppy EVERY TIME they bite too hard, otherwise they will think they can get away with it again. Every dog is different, just be patient no matter how painful those evil little teeth get.
Alyssa Delaney thank you, hes a good guy, hes already potty trained, and the only problem for me is just him biting me and i always just push him away and say no biting ! Doesnt seem to work.so if he gets crazy i put him outside for 1 min or so but like the guy said it doesnt work so ima stop that and saying ouch doesnt work for me he just stays biting and doesnt let go. I gave him a treat everytime he let go and it makes it easier but i dont know if thats good

I like the idea that we need to respect mother of nature before dealing with the problem. Our puppy is almost 6months. His biting is softer but still does that particularly when he meets people. According to this video, this strategy might be too late to try but I wanna try it any way. I wish I had known this a couple of months ago!

@MomandBee BeeandMom i don't remember what this video says, but we just always gave her a toy to bite we she would try to bite our hands and after a really long time it got better. she still bite's our hands but its very soft and most the time she doesn't actually bite our hands she just puts her mouth on our hands. she will even catch herself and go get a toy and bring it back to chew on so she doesn't try to bite us, if she's getting kinda wild. I'll say again that it took a really long time but one day it just clicked with her.
Great and helpful explanation. I just got a puppy and he was biting me time many times. I thought I should not push him away, as some videos recommended to do, nor give him a treat, as other suggested. I sensed this is part of their natural development, I also saw how the puppies bite themselves all of the times. I let my puppy bit me many times, giving him feedback whenever I could, I made the mistake of moving my hand or feet away and just as you said in the video, it only triggered more biting. This all makes a ton of sense, and clearly works well....for dogs that can hear. How do I convey the "OUCH!" to my puppy who we've confirmed is fully deaf! We are at our wit's end!
Try making up a hand movement, foot movement, or noticeable face. You can also try objects. A colorful paper ball or something noticeable so she knows when she sees it to stop❤️!
Glad I saw this video. Supporting an action I do with young pups as a groomer. When pups bite me instead of throwing my hands back which he expects I keep my hand in their mouth and eventually they think this isn’t fun snd want to spit me out. Usually only takes three bites and I see them rethink that action. It’s very effective
I just adopted a 7 month old puppy. He is the most hyper puppy I've have EVER met. I try to run him several hours a day & he is still just so hyper. I hardly ever get time to just let & cuddle him because he is so hyper ALL the time. He listens good, does great on & off leash, doesn't let me leave his sight, but he is just so dang hyper. I know what I signed up for (all my animals are adopted or came from bad situations) I am going to try to apply these techniques? Even tho he is 6 months. Thanks for the info! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I adopted a puppy that was taken from her mother too young. She has serious issues and biting was a huge first obstacle. Any interaction sends her energy through the roof and praising her was horrible. In a few short days she has learned to slightly nip instead of drawing blood. Its going to be a long road but we have taken the first step. THANK YOU!
This video changed our puppy training in 48 (semi painful) hours. Two days after watching, we've made tremendous progress with our 12 week old Doodle, who now okay bites with the gentlest of teeth. Thank you 1000x!

Yeah, you are training the puppy out of your puppy. It's kinda sad. It is far better to teach them to play nice than to teach them not to play at all.

The last time I had a puppy to train, we didn't have so many resources to learn from, but we did fairly well with ours. With all the free info available nowadays, people have no excuse for not properly training their dogs.

This video has set me so at ease I can't begin to tell you. Everything I'm reading about bite inhibition is about focusing on stopping the behavior. I'd gotten myself so whipped up I was panicking every time he bit me that he is going to wind up aggressive and mean. I finally starting doing timeouts because he's really mangling my hands and I am desperate. Someone on Reddit suggested this video - I started working with him as suggested and saw improvement in LITERAL MINUTES. I could cry. I know this is a long process that will take some time and see ups and downs, but this video completely shifted my perspective on the behavior. THANK YOU thank you thank you

Oh my Goodness! I literally just had a meltdown and started crying because my puppy is hurting me soooo much when he play bites! I’ve organically used the crying method and it sometimes works, but some details in this video like do not remove your hand and reward him when he steps back are a pure revelation! I’m going to try this method asap! I have a trainer and puppy classes but they advised doing the distraction method when you ask your puppy to play with a toy instead of biting you! How stupid!!!! Makes total sense! Puppies let each other know if they hurt each other... even their mom teaches them this. This guys right on! They do grow out of it and it does stop eventually... work on taking food away also from a very very young age... bite inhibition! Great definition of the soloution...!!! Love this guy!!! I'm really finding all these videos instructive and helpful. Biggest issue is our 10 week old Boxer puppy, Sasha, who was weaned too soon as we got here at 7 weeks, just keeps biting harder and more excited when we try to say ouch over and over. She also tries to rip our hand off like it's a toy she can run off with. She doesn't rear back like in the video when we actually get her attention with higher pitched "ouches", doesn't remove her mouth from our hand, and looks at us like she wants us to be quiet while she chews. We're starting obedience training a week from this Sunday but are desperate for help now as she's drawing blood constantly!

@@mekahs1600 unfortunately not but now that she's almost 1.5 years old and we started having time outs when she gets too excited and wants to bite she's getting better. Her excitement quickly turns to aggressive play we think because of her early life experiences and lack of socialization with her momma to teach those all important lessons.

@@BWDavisV to be real with you, this is most likely because your dog is lacking correction. I know there’s a huge positivity only training community out there and I think it’s great, really. But as you can see, 1.5 years and your dog can still be dangerous. The mom would have corrected your dog, so why shouldn’t you (it’s new mom)
He did say if the ouches don't work, leave the room immediately without speaking. Once they're deprived of your attention/presence completely they will understand (possibly after a few leavings) that if they bite, you go, so no more game. I've seen the leaving work on 'Dogs Behaving (very) Badly" on TV.

By far,this is the best video on the internet that addresses and explains why puppies bite and how to handle it. I have used the techniques in this video on my 9 weeks old German Shepherd puppy who is now 14 weeks and it worked wonders. I now have a very well behaved Strong pupp when it comes to biting.

Ted Castrence number one way they could improve- they need to be built to reduce acoustics. All that cement and block construction to keep things sanitary causes the place to be loud. The dogs bark and it echoes the cats cry and it echoes and the animals get ten times as stressed as they would be if it could be more quiet.
I always feel like there should be water fountains to help with the noise and I don’t know about ceiling and wall construction much or how helpful baffling is, or soundproofing that is cost effective-but in my kennel experience (20 yrs) this is one of the biggest issues next to sanitary and quarantine issues for health

THIS VIDEO IS AMAZING!!!!!! I've watched dozens of other videos about puppy biting and this is the only one that's allowed me to make a sincere, noticeable difference with my puppy. Most other videos I've found just teach to walk away and/or redirect the biting to a toy. My dude! This video completely changed the way my wife and I deal with our 11 week old Patterdale Terrier and her prolific tendencies to bite anything her mouth will fit around. Her biting for the most part has dulled somewhat, she does however have a habit of getting lost in her zoomies, but she is learning. slowly, but progress is progress. We're both super glad we found this video out of the plethora of useless ones on the subject, most of which just promote redirection. Hugest thanks from the three of us!!

FINALLY! Something that actually works 😭😭 I unfortunately messed up somewhere! If I say “ow” he either bites more softly, licks it, or completely let’s go. When I follow up with “Good boy!” He takes it as an invitation to bite me again 😭 instead I just pat him light and stay silent unless if he bites again I say “ow!”

Forced compliance has its place. This is standard in military training. Military trained dogs are almost always noticeably more compliant than civilian trained dogs. My own training philosophy draws heavily from the teachings of Konrad Most. He outlined the principles of operant conditioning 30 years before BF Skinner. His methods are in use almost universally for training military and law enforcement animals. Those dogs will never bite anyone unless the handler orders it, yet they are some of the meanest, toughest dogs in the world.
I just can't get over how great this channel is. There's a lot of other great channels, but the way you concisely deliver information makes following along so easy.

We just rescued a seven-month-old full blooded chocolate lab and she too play bites but her play bite is pretty strong and painful. She is sleeping right now but when she wakes up and starts play biting, I'm going to try this technique and see if it works. I really hope it's not too late to teach and instill this training technique with her. She's a wild child for sure! I'm working on a lot of different things with her and I don't want to confuse her with too much at once. But the biting has to ease up some. I'm afraid to let her around any kids or other people. I'm really working on leash training hard with her so I can run her and take walks instead of her only running around our yard on a leash run ( we have an underground fence , but is not working. My husband is trying to fix it. She wants to run me instead of me running her. I've been watching videos about all types of training but especially about biting and leash training. This video was great because it gives us the foundation of why puppies bite to start with. I always assumed it was for teething purposes! I'm going to also see if this channel has any good videos on leash training.

I’m in the same situation as you! Mini-Aussie just turned 4 months old and his biting can be rough sometimes, especially when he wants our attention to play. We thought redirection was the first step, but this video taught me that force of bite should be corrected first. How did your dog turn out?

Wow! Kolby is 5 mos, a heeler/shepherd vocal & a mouther/nipper, biter. How I wish I had seen this 2 mos ago. It makes 100% sense & if I had been consistent with what actually seemed to work, this method that noone else has taught, we would be done with this behavior. I found this video in a Reddit thread at r/pitbulls just after we found our abandoned 7-week-old bully-mix. I had my whole family watch it and we practiced bite inhibition training with him. I won't lie, sometimes it was really hard because those puppy teeth are SHARP. But it WORKED. Now that he is 7 months old and 65 lbs - he has a very gentle mouth and NEVER bites hard, even when very excited. This should be mandatory viewing for every new puppy owner.

Omg it's working. 😲 Finally some hope! Maybe she's not a bloodthirsty psychopath after all. Thank you so much for providing the full technique; just yelping was making her go for me even harder, and it's been a long first 6 weeks. I look like I wrestled a barbed wire fence.
When I put on and take off her leash, and often when I pick her up she goes super berzerko. What should I be doing when she clamps down super hard? I usually use my other hand to pry her mouth open and free my limb or hair. Food doesn't phase her in those moments. Is this totally ass-backwards?
Those are the times she's most likely to lunge at my face, also. I'll do an exaggerated gasp and say her name in a "How could you!?" tone, but not shockingly, this doesn't seem to have much impact.
I desperately want to enjoy my dog, especially in this fleeting puppy phase, and bond with her in the way that creates a steadfast sidekick, but I feel like I'm failing miserably. I'm glad I found this channel. I'll definitely keep watching.
We just got our puppy two weeks ago. Lordy I forgot how hard they are to train about biting. I've never had a dog that liked to bite my hair quite like this one. @@carolpearce7755 Mine likes to cuddle up on my pillow, oozing with cuteness, then nuzzles my head and starts ripping the hair out of my scalp. Little psychopath. She goes for it anytime it's within range, and that will be the next focus for us. I think a good strong stay and leave it is the answer, but there could be something else.
The method in this video took care of the biting within a couple weeks, thankfully, and making sure she is good and worn out from exercise a few times a day has made a world of difference. Both in general behavior and in how quickly she picks up on training. I was too casual about it before, and I'm glad I understand that now.
If I find a good, solid method of eliminating the hair thing, I'll come back and link it here.

Girl, I'm with you. My baby is adorable but I too look like the fence won. He bit my nose and he just bit my lip lunging at my face! ! Which brings me to this video. He's asleep right now I'm gonna try it when he wakes up! 🙏🙏🐶
@@thevisualvixen2522 I am confident you'll be successful with this technique! The face lunging, in my opinion, was a serious potential danger and something I knew I had to address with an iron fist. Every time it happened, without fail, and any time teeth touched my face, I would freeze, all play would immediately stop, and I would look her in the eye and gasp, saying her name in that melodramatic "how could you!?" tone, and I'd turn away from her or walk away. It totally worked. She just had her first birthday 2 weeks ago and these days, when we're snuggle-playing or something, and she gets too close to my face, she knows it. As soon as she realizes she's grazed me, she kinda pauses and looks at me like she's saying, "Oops, sorry." I'll usually just do a sharp inhale for the sake of consistency, and she self-corrects and and calms it down.
I no longer have to keep my hair pulled up, also, and it's longer than ever. I just did the same thing as in the video, as though it hurt me super bad. Same with clothes. Problem solved.
One thing I want to share that I don't think a lot of folks think about with training treats - we have one brand of food for regular feeding, and a totally different brand to use for training. Don't get sucked into spending a fortune on anything fancy; Anything that's not what's in their bowl, they're going to get excited about and think its a treat.

@@lisakukla459 OMG, the first sentence had me laughing sooo hard, too funny. I know the feeling, I can see it on my puppy's face when he's about to attack. I am doing these techniques when he wakes up from his nap, he is such an angel when he's tired, but can be completely gonzo at times.
Really great. 3 month old Aussie, we've been on the right track more or less - But we've been "protecting" our senior Lab (11 years) from our landshark; This video is terrific and reminded me that the absolute best teachers of bite inhibition are....other dogs with good bite inhibition. Bob (our Lab) is super patient but when he reaches his limit, he gives a good snarl and shows those pearly whites. She backs off and looks at him in stunned admiration. We'll be doing more of this! How did I not find you guys earlier???

Edit: I promised I would update! This works wonders!!! I've tried everything in the book up until this video my puppy was crazy and out of control and now she's barely bites and if she does it's very softly. Sometimes she still bites to hard but using this method stops her right away

I finally had a chance to put this into play with my son’s puppy. I was not timing it with him but this is effective training for the puppy. I have 4 senior dogs that other family members, who did not watch this video separated the puppy from them. I took him to the backyard and 3 of the 4 dogs and it worked within a few minutes and he was responsive to my feedback
My 5mo Amstaff was chewing through my skin. This technique stopped it in 15 minutes. He never wanted to hurt or frustrate me, but I didn’t know the best way to tell him how to NOT hurt or frustrate me. This is gonna sound weird, but it felt like we understood each other. its mind blowing that no one knows this... even Animal Humane Society told me to “redirect with a chew toy” Ive had so many dogs and no one ever mentioned play biting vs. teething. EDIT: (May 2020, redirecting with a toy worked better for me)
All that does is teach your dog that when it wants a toy it should bite you.
Live And Inspired No actually, i did it with my dog and it worked. his technique did nothing though. My dog bit so much she got returned by 2 families, but i stuck to the toy redirecting and it worked.
Well, in the video he does make a difference between biting to regulate and biting to get attention. If your dog was old enough that it wasn't regulating (Ian said about 7 months) then clearly the technique isn't going to work. It's a different scenario.

I’m currently over at my neighbor’s house, they got a puppy two weeks ago and I’m watching him while they’re at work. He’s a very sweet puppy who rarely bites but when he’s playing, your tips come very much in handy.

ericksamaniegofit Well firstly, congratulations on getting a puppy, a malinois will make you a great dog when trained properly. I have to say though that I hope you started bite training asap because, as I’m sure you know, malinois are known to act like puppies for most of their lives. My pup, who just turned a year, didn’t fully understand the concept of biting too hard until he was around 3-4 months, when we neutered him. That said, he was a rescue and a product of bad breeding so he does have some serious temperamental issues we are still dealing with (one of the reasons we got him clipped so early). Just make sure to correct your puppy EVERY TIME they bite too hard, otherwise they will think they can get away with it again. Every dog is different, just be patient no matter how painful those evil little teeth get.
Alyssa Delaney thank you, hes a good guy, hes already potty trained, and the only problem for me is just him biting me and i always just push him away and say no biting ! Doesnt seem to work.so if he gets crazy i put him outside for 1 min or so but like the guy said it doesnt work so ima stop that and saying ouch doesnt work for me he just stays biting and doesnt let go. I gave him a treat everytime he let go and it makes it easier but i dont know if thats good

I like the idea that we need to respect mother of nature before dealing with the problem. Our puppy is almost 6months. His biting is softer but still does that particularly when he meets people. According to this video, this strategy might be too late to try but I wanna try it any way. I wish I had known this a couple of months ago!

@MomandBee BeeandMom i don't remember what this video says, but we just always gave her a toy to bite we she would try to bite our hands and after a really long time it got better. she still bite's our hands but its very soft and most the time she doesn't actually bite our hands she just puts her mouth on our hands. she will even catch herself and go get a toy and bring it back to chew on so she doesn't try to bite us, if she's getting kinda wild. I'll say again that it took a really long time but one day it just clicked with her.

Great and helpful explanation. I just got a puppy and he was biting me time many times. I thought I should not push him away, as some videos recommended to do, nor give him a treat, as other suggested. I sensed this is part of their natural development, I also saw how the puppies bite themselves all of the times. I let my puppy bit me many times, giving him feedback whenever I could, I made the mistake of moving my hand or feet away and just as you said in the video, it only triggered more biting. I'm so glad I found this! I've always been told to redirect them to a chew toy and knew nothing of ABI. With her being a little over 4 months old, hopefully there's still time to do this correctly. Thank you!

This all makes a ton of sense, and clearly works well....for dogs that can hear. How do I convey the "OUCH!" to my puppy who we've confirmed is fully deaf! We are at our wit's end!
Try making up a hand movement, foot movement, or noticeable face. You can also try objects. A colorful paper ball or something noticeable so she knows when she sees it to stop❤️!
Glad I saw this video. Supporting an action I do with young pups as a groomer. When pups bite me instead of throwing my hands back which he expects I keep my hand in their mouth and eventually they think this isn’t fun snd want to spit me out. Usually only takes three bites and I see them rethink that action. It’s very effective
I just adopted a 7 month old puppy. He is the most hyper puppy I've have EVER met. I try to run him several hours a day & he is still just so hyper. I hardly ever get time to just let & cuddle him because he is so hyper ALL the time. He listens good, does great on & off leash, doesn't let me leave his sight, but he is just so dang hyper. I know what I signed up for (all my animals are adopted or came from bad situations) I am going to try to apply these techniques? Even tho he is 6 months. Thanks for the info!
