We start off with how I approach the issue at my kennel and then I give you two other, basic, time tested, solutions for puppy biting and nipping that are guaranteed to work as long as you are patient, consistent, and persistent.

I believe my current 18 week old puppy has an extremely painful teething phase. I have never had a puppy as mouthy and bity as my current Rottweiler puppy.
My puppy also picks up everything, especially rocks and used paper tissues. 😮
I plan to ask the veterinary about some ointment for my puppy's jaws, as I don't want him to suffer so much. My puppy also pulls back his ears in pain constantly since about a week.
My puppy was very oral from the beginning, but now he only is calm enough to lick on a few occasions. I can touch him everywhere, he doesn't care if I lift him up or look in his mouth or touch him vigorously. Yet since a week, he seems to be upset out of nowhere and then bites everything, also my hands and my clothes.
I am alone with my puppy 24/7 and so he always has my attention and closeness. He Wil be trained to be my certified PTSD service dog, so it's normal that we are together the whole time. I do crate training with him every day, but other than that he always lies next to me or accompanies me.
Most dog trainers online talk about positive reinforcement only and concerning biting, they say that the dog needs distraction with treats when biting. I must say that this all is bullshit. If a dog bites because his jaws hurt, then distraction with treats is total nonsense. If a dog bites because it's fun to do so, then the normal reaction wouldn't be to hand out treats, but show him that biting is not OK. In such situations I turn away like any dog would do too. And if the puppy does it again, I growl and say a SOLID and SINCERE "NO!"

My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

My dog is almost 2years old. He is way out bitting stage, but I still love to watch you teach us how to be better dog owners, by covering every aspects of the dog education.This is so important.
Also, the fact that you questioned yourself and realized that you might of been doing your own way, after Eli mentioned, reading you a email about puppy biting, that he didint really know how to deal with puppy bites either, shows, once again, that you are a really smart and humble man who has also raised a very smart son too ;-)

Very listenable and informative. Really explains the personal attributes we need as owners. Articulate explanation of teething and milk teeth falling that I didn't know - that was a first and the analogy of dog play to explain how they behave with humans. Very calm and serene listen also. Hi! Thank you for the amazing advice, I’m a huge fan of your training style! My English pointer pup has been with me for 10 days now, she’s just over 11 weeks old and a real biter. I’ve been using your second strategy so far and it has definitely made an improvement. She absolutely has a bio-rhythm and I can tell it’s when she has pent up energy that she’s at her most bitey. My problem is giving her enough exercise because she hasn’t had her second and third parvo shots yet and we had an outbreak in December where I live. I have a fairly large yard with slopes, steps, terraces and a mix of lawn and wilder areas of shrubs for her to explore. I try to let her run along with me up and down and around but I’m not sure that’s enough? I use ALL her kibble to train, she’s sitting, targeting and laying down already... and it’s definitely getting there, just very slowly.

Im a fairly new dog owner. I got my first dog ( English Black Lab) 4 years ago and I've worked with many trainers on puppy manners, obedience, agility...etc. You are the absolute BEST! We have a 4 month old Turkish Kangal who is going through the puppy biting phase. I have just seen your video on puppy biting and I like your style. I will give your puppy biting techniques a go because the dog is big and strong and I love to play rough but after 5 minutes the dog is just getting started and I need to stop to tend to my wounds. Due to Covid-19 lock down here in Australia I have not been able to visit a trainer so I have been looking online for advice. Other dog training videos have made me feel like I was encouraging bad behavior in the dog so I stopped the rough play. Thank you for your video as I will enjoy being a "caveman" and start playing rough with my dog again.

I love this video, I’m 51 and the first thing I ever do with a new puppy is get on the floor and roll around with it 🤣🤣🤣 I’ve never been taught to do it as a training thing, I just instinctively roll with them, it teaches me everything I need to know about them and vice versa. Biting gets dealt with on the spot and I’ve never had an issue 😊
We’re picking up our new Giant Schnauzer the first week and I’ll of November. Your videos have been a god send. I’ve just ordered a good pair of walking shoes, because I get it exercise, exercise, exercise! Thank you sir, your down to earth approach is very appealing.

@Steven Faulds believe me I did research on this breed to a long time before we got her. She’ll be 2 years this September. Has been an excellent dog. Completely nonaggressved. Very good with our grandchildren. Loyal, excellent guard dog, let’s us know immediately if something is going on with our property. We can take her out in public and she’s not aggressive with strangers, she is aloof with them, but that’s the breed. I agree everyone should research the breed they are considering, might be less in shelters if they did. Sorry u passed on the giant. They aren’t for first time dog owners. You must be In control that’s for sure, just show love with that firmness and they’ll do anything for you. One of the best dogs we have ever owned!
@Steven Faulds it breaks my heart also to see dogs given up to shelters. People stop us all the time asking us about this dog. You don’t see them very often and folks are very curious. I use that time to help educate them about the breed, like you I can’t stand to see people buy these dogs without knowing what their doing. I’ve wanted one for years and after all this time I decided I was ready for one, it wasn’t on a whim. We have a small farm and she gets plenty of exercise, which is the one thing I can say is essential with this dog. Not an apartment dog! Even though you don’t have one, you can also help to educate people on giants because of ur research. Been nice chatting with you. This is one giant who will never be in a shelter, she has a home for life!

I understand what you mean about how there is a lot of content out there on puppy biting, but as a dog trainer I love seeing how other trainers teach these basic behaviors. You never know when someone elses way of teaching a behavior can aid you with your own client!
Always remember, what’s best is whatever makes your clients happy...
@@StonnieDennis definitely true. So many ways to teach so many things! Whatever your client feels most confident and successful doing is always the best route.
A lot of people feel that clicker training is gimmicky, but since starting to work with it I've seen just how helpful it can be to be able to pinpoint moments with so much precision. It can also be a big help in dogs who tend to get more excited when you use your voice (as in "good boy") and end up going right back to what you just settled them from.

@larry andrews just because people are happy doesn't make them dumb. I've been around dogs my whole life and what he says makes a lot of sense to me. Her just presents it in a cheerful carefree way. Bubbly people are often mistaken as dumb and that is the biggest mistake someone can make when sizing us up.

Love how knowledgeable you are on all things dog, Stonnie! It’s enviable. ☺️ Would you consider doing a video on leash work for difficult cases? My 36lb doberman puppy lunges on his slip lead now when he doesn’t get his way. He used to respond to simple leash pressure during walks and we’ll have random good days of loose leash walking, but it seems like the bigger he gets the less he cares that Im on the other end. He’s killing my hand and arm these days.
you need to get on that dog because is going to be much bigger in a few months..... bigger the dog bigger the problem. maybe the lord will give you a nice dog but that is unlikely.
first off how well socialised was your dog in early puppyhood? Is his lunging out of fear or out of intent to do damage?
First off the guy above me, makes no sense at all and was not being constructive at all just weird. Here is what I would do... I would walk the pup and continue to change directions and treat every time the leash gets slack in it. Start walking if he pulls and leash gets tight quickly change direction, continue this until you get improvement soon as the dog leaves slack on the leash treat right away and mark it with a good or yes or click. Takes lots of patience but you got this! "its called changing direction" it helps your dog understand that you are the leader.

Thanks so much for the info. I would have liked to see a dog who actually was biting inappropriately and how you reacted. I know it is difficult to get that with so many well trained dogs! Far too many breeders are selling puppies before they should be taken away from their mother, they either do not care or don't know that the very best puppies are those who have been brought up by their mom until at least 10 weeks old and preferably 12 weeks. Six weeks is FAR too young to remove a dog from his mom, he hasn't learned much of anything by then! He is still like a baby who doesn't have the physical ability to get into trouble so mom has not had to correct him!
I have a tiny tearer-ist, JR mix and she is attacking to chew on my fingers or attacks my mouth when cuddling. Thanks for the demo on how to curb this. Great vid,

Thank you so much for all the helpful info you provide. My son just brought home a lab/mastiff 8 week old pup. I have a dog aggressive dachshund male 7 years old and he bit (no blood involved) the pup when he approached and touched him. The pup was howling for a minute or so and I removed the adult dog but I dont know if we should protect the pup or not get involved. Do you have any recommendation on how to handle this? Thank you.

Hey Stonnie. Just got a lab bernese puppy and love your videos. However, this video just shows a calm puppy letting you do everything. Would be great to see a puppy you haven't worked with as there is no example of her not listening or letting you touch anything.

LOVE this video! As someone that is used to old fashioned dog training I took my 2nd last puppy to a 'millennial' puppy class. Basically I wanted to learn clicker training. I didn't last past 2nd class for the foolishness and damage they were doing to puppies. I tried 3 different classes and trainers and left before completing any of them. Fearful puppy snapping and growling..and they gave it treats for stopping...all they taught that poor puppy was that if it snapped it got rewarded...barking puppies were given a toy so they taught the puppy that barking brought toy rewards...puppy whining with excitement at other puppies but not allowed to interact was force fed treats to 'reassure' the puppy...the puppy was excited and frustrated not scared... I gave the whole millennial puppy training up and my last puppy trained him at home the old fashioned way with very helpful tips from RUclips trainers like yourself. Thanks for what you do and what you give us dog owners

Our puppy is almost 5 months old, he stopped biting me quite a while ago. No longer an issue. However, when he plays with the kids it still happens from time to time. Your video reminded me that I need to get down on the ground with him like they do, and act crazy (not my style), and then correct when he bites shoes or clothes. You made me howl with laughter at some of the things you said "how can you get mad at something with no thumbs" "don't spray yourself down with cancer" (so true) but in seriousness you taught me a lot about why my 11 week old Rottweiler is biting. She'S just excited or experiencing life in the only way she can when she "DOESN'T HAVE THUMBS" Although I was told never to do the "ALPHA DOG" pinning as it's not something they do in the wild. However, you said it is. I'm a little confused, can you explain please? thank you.
Mostly I’ve heard not to use the alpha roll because a really messed up or fearful dog might bite you in the face if you get too aggressive and close when it’s riled. I have seen my adult dogs handle an annoying “teen” dog by grabbing it by the scruff of the neck and dragging it around the yard. At first I was afraid the younger dog would get hurt, but it never did. It was so funny to see, and quite predictable if you had time to watch the behavior patterns. So adult dogs definitely use physical force/intimidation when younger ones don’t take gentle corrections seriously.
Yay! I love these videos; they’re so informative. My puppy is 2 1/2 months old. He’s beautiful most of the time, but he’s also very stubborn. Sometimes when I tell him no, he “talks back” and bites (more like chomps) the air. Today, he was really close to my face (I was sitting on the floor) when he did it. I don’t know what to do when this happens, and I dint want this problem to progress.

You can also try yelping when this occurs. If you use the dogs language to tell him he’s biting too hard, he’ll catch on. When my dog chomps too hard on my ears I yelped. Now he knows when we’re wrestling that my ears are sensitive. So are his when I bite them!
weejitwill I’ve heard this advice before. Whole this works for some pups, loud noises and high pitched sounds only seems to exacerbate the situation and the excite my puppy even more. He’s 5 months now, though, and he’s finally started to calm down with the mouthing.
4 days in with a 4 month old Heeler /Catahoula rescue. Amazing pup. Love her to pieces But puppy biting big time. Simple grab of the throat (nothing even hard) and she stopped biting. Crazy. Thanks a million. Keep up the awesome videos! Gonna need em with this high energy girl 💕
