He heavily leans into dominance theory, which these days has been next to debunked in it’s usefulness of getting rid of unruly behaviour, and also in it’s place within the relationships between people and dogs, and also most of the time with dog-dog relationships (save for a few instances). I've subscribed to your channel because you have the perfect combination of psychology AND actual techniques. After a week of video's I was feeling in over my head. Wow! Parenting = training! As a mother of 3, I really appreciate the visuals using the family. I have been trying to get my dogs to come when I call... I live on a busy highway and like to walk them on the sidewalks in the afternoon. One day they both ran off (slipped out of their collars) and chased a bird right to the edge of the highway! I called them and they came right back to me. My mutts are awesome.
I gave all my new husky pups names, one came naturally, catch phrase for liter was “ that must Bootsy”, the one always either crying or upset. Then she completed her name with a display of kicking feet just 2 weeks old. Then Shamrock was named for her markings, as Bootsy. The dad’s puppy has a name for the only male in the litter, JJ after his dad Jerry. Bootsy’s mom has another name for her, Kamik which means Eskimo Boots, and they have been very happy to hear all news. Dogs have many names, some they may keep to themselves.
Yeah, I live on the corner and the cross street has murdered many family pets who decide to get adventurous. This is worth the neighbors wondering why im screaming at my new puppy because it may save his life if he turns back instead of into deadly traffic someday.
Realized my cat thought her name was "I love you" when I called "Alice?" and was ignored then said "oh...well, I love you anyway" and she whipped her head around and walked over...I only used her name when telling her to get off of something so... Whoops!
My cat's name is oyster and I can call her with two ticks of my mouth one of the smartest cats I've ever had just going to lay with me to under the covers
i was so tired of our lilly biting us all the time and then i used a few tips i learned from the MyDogTraining7.blogspot.com -- videos. it was like night and day; worked so well
I’ve been a subscriber for about three months now. You have a life long fan and this is one of my all time favorites! Especially the advice to “not nag”🤐🙏🤦🏻♀️ Abundantly clear that you do what you love and love what do! Thank you for sharing that.
excellent tips, thank you! I have a 9 month old beagle and i have never used his name with a negative behavior. He knows his name, but being a beagle, does not always come when called!
Lots of good information here. You answered the one question I had at the beginning: What if I have to yell at my dog, in an emergency? We have 3 dogs and so we usually precede commands with the dog's name. What you said made perfect sense.
Thank you so much for this! I have grown up with dogs all my life, and helped to train many dogs. I have an older rescue, we trained to the 9. He was so easy and responded perfectly to our positive and negative cues, plus he was older and low energy. He is now the best dog. We just adopted a lab/Doberman mix. She is 1.5 years old, and is a power house combined with a puppies energy. She knows, nothing! And doesn't respond to "no" or negative cues. Just found out you shouldn't use "no" with rescues, so I am stopping that now, and using just a SHH noise with ahhh. Its day five today, and she came to us, and doesn't respond to her given name. So setting boundaries with her in the maelstrom of trying to teach her, her name while showing her house rules has made her a handful. Trying to burn her out with exercise, hasn't helped yet. I know its day 5 so she hasn't settled yet. She loves training. It's the only time she isn't hopping and bounding around the house. Thanks again for the name info, this helped me realize to never use her name negatively! :)
This was exactly what I needed. I have an incredibly smart, very good Border Collie/Whippet mix...and I have noticed over the last few months his recall is getting weaker and weaker when we are out hiking in the woods. I ABSOLUTELY am sure it is the over use of his name, in a negative way. Re-training myself begins immediately!! Thanks so much...you have a new subscriber.
Thanks! One of these days I had a situation where this video comes very handy. I was walking off the leash, when a skater passed by and my dog got scared and run. Needless to say she was deaf... On the bright side I found out she knows her way home. But time to train her to be responsive to me shouting! As always, great video.
Your ear rings remind me of my mother. I love my mother. (you...not so much) BUT, what you had to say was spot on!!!! I will be watching more of your videos.
@@SimpawticoDogTraining I must confess, I do it likewise, but now sure want to stop it and do better! That being said, however, is it not also true that the way we say the name is different, depending on situation. So I guess at least some dogs are very well aware how it's actually meant. Like the saying goes: the tone makes the music.
I have a 7 year old dog that has never been properly trained, I don't live in an area with an obedience school and I've never trained a dog before. Thanks from a newbie at this!
I'm a CONVERT!!! You are wonderful!!! Just what I've been seeking in RUclips videos in general and especially to help with my new puppy. I love that you provide rationale with each lesson, not to mention citing your sources. You use visuals and organization really effectively. --and the fact that you review and use lists is marvelous! I wish you did videos on dozens of other topics (my interests, of course.) 😉 Thank you so much for quality information, and mostly your devotion and investment of time and effort. I'm sure you have so many fans that this may not be big news to you, but you can definitely can count me as one more!
You are a professional trainer and you are awesome. Are used your techniques to train my puppy. About three years ago. I got him to the point in just a few sessions in which I would throw his dog food at him, his kibble at his feet and tell him not to touch it and he would just look at it when he was really hungry first thing in the morning and then I would command him to go ahead and eat and then he only then he would start touching it and eating it you’re amazing. Thank you so much thank God for the talent he’s given you.
This is really good info. It's so simple but you never think about it. And it's going to be an adjustment to your own behaviour, I yelled my dog's name negatively while watching this video. 🤦♂️
I've always been bad with this. So I actually worked around it by having a "naughty name" that I trained for them to go lie down in a certain spot. Their full names are always positive, but their nickname, usually shortened, I can get my frustration out with. It's been very helpful.
These videos are simpáticos ! I’ve been using the ‘codes’ w/out knowing what they were... And wondered why my dog doesn’t always answer to his name in an emergency, but I use a (soft) whistle instead! He always comes to that, no matter what, so I guess my whistle is “you must come now” 😉 I guess I wasn’t doing everything 85% wrong, as I thought, but 75% right 😜 Thanks for sharing. Very helpful.
Omg this video is so helpful as I have been experiencing these issues (ignoring me when I ask him to come) for a very long time. Thank you so much for the tips! I have no idea that keep calling his names on everything will have a negative impact. You definitely deserve more subscribers!!
I have a 1 and a half year old Bloodhound. She does great on the leash with training. I have started training with her off leash in the yard so that she understands she has to listen off leash too. Such a stubborn bread. It is really hard for me not use her name as a reprimand. I will have to try and find a phrase that I can say naturally as her reprimand and start giving high reward treats for coming when my voice is raised. Thanks for the video your a god send.
Very true. You are too good. All the dogs would have thanked u for making their owners understand them.Anyways thanks on their behalf and Lots of love.
As a new pet parent, I’m working so hard to get this stuff right. I heard that most dogs don’t even like the sound of their own names! That made me so very sad to think that we work so hard to pick the perfect one for our new little companion and then do everything we can to ruin it for our pet... Thanks for the guidance on this. The stuff about nicknames is particularly helpful as I can put it into practice with my little guy right from the start. BTW there are several worthwhile takeaways for parents of teenagers here as well...😉
I finally figured this out with a German Pinscher puppy I rescued. He was the smartest dog I'd ever had and ended up learning his name day one! He also learned how to open his crate, how to open doors, and how to get out of our fenced in yard no matter what we did to keep him in. However, I always knew when he was out and would stand out front and call his name as excitedly as I possibly could and he would immediately stop what he was doing and run at top speed to me and jump into my arms because that was the only way I ever called him and I'd play with him (he couldn't care less about food if play was an option) as soon as he reaches me. I even trusted him enough to let him go again to bring my brothers timid new dog back when the gate had been left open because I knew he'd come right back when I called and that she would run away if I tried to go near her. He was only 4 or 5 months old at that point and he knew his name so well!
This channel should have won the YT award for best dog training videos 2017.. let us hope you get it in 2018.. because this is the best training videos i have ever seen on YT.. I work as a trainer - we have our own fasility .. Love to work with dogs :) Got my firstGSD in 1989 . I update my education all the time and have looked into a lot off different things ( pos trainer though) .. but i still learn new things from you guys.. Not trying to brag - i am just so happy that i have found a channel that has so much cool stuff i can take with me on my journey.. The coding system is incredible Would love to see more about that.. By the way , you are very good at teaching.. :)
Agree! If you want your dog to come to you ... you do have to make sure that your dog know that he’s going to be hugged, get a treat, going somewhere with you, something positive, etc.
Great video. I see a lot of beginners m this error at the dog school I train. Must admit I do sometimes as well. Humans are hardwired to address someone by their name. Also the command for "come here" is often destroyed as people repeat it over and over again. I taught my dog a "secret word". Only my wife and I know what it is. When we say that word, Guus vind right away as he knows he gets a super reward (roast beef etc).
Yes, absolutely on "Come" as you said. Requests get denatured just the same. That's a constant conversation I'm having with students! Also, the secret word thing is genius! I love that idea! Thanks for commenting!
Our secret word was "chicken." 😂 But it was hard not to use in real life so I may need to come up with a new secret word this time. Secret for outside the family, too!
Im not taking sides but i came across a fairly new video for cesar and he mentioned never use the dog name in punishment or correcting wrong behaviour, just being fair, and thanks for all the information you provide on this channel,i love zak george also....
Brilliant! Thanks - our dogs have a couple nicknames each. Good to know the right way to use them. The biggest challenge will be to get everyone in the house to implement the tips!
Good video. Glad I watched this one. I've had and lived with dogs for many, many years and never really thought about how I could influence my dogs by the context in which I use their name. This is so important to know, yet how many people give this any thought at all. A real eye opener.
I'm lucky I found your channel. You give some great advice on how to deal with dogs. I'm having my first puppy in a week and I can use all the help I can get. Keep it up
Because I don't take my pups out the front door without their leash, they don't bolt out the door. However, if they did, I'd just shout "huhu" (like being punched in the gut twice) snap my finger and they are back in. I only use their name when I want them to singularly pay attention. Such as when I give them a treat, I hold the treat up to their nose and they have to wait till i say, "[Dogs name] take it." Or when they eat, they have to sit calmly and "say please" before they can eat. All this together has kept them easy to keep dogs and I love them! Couldn't imagine life without them. On the other hand, when they get too rowdy, I will use their full name with a deep tone rather a happy tone. As the narrator stated, this helps the dog differentiate between a good name calling and when the dog needs to pay attention.
This was a cool video! I found it by chance and glad I did. This explains in part why our dog listens to me better than he does to my wife. And yes I have a bunch of nicknames for him and, without me realizing it was "a thing", for the very reasons you stated. Growing up with 5 brothers and sisters I had lots of nicknames as we all did, and those names let us know who wanted us and with an idea of if it was good or bad. Of course we all had nick names for our mom and dad too! hahaha! This was very informative and I'll look up more of your videos! Peace
Thank you for enlightening me once again. You never fail to disappoint me. Keep up the great work - always look forward to a new video and something new to focus on! You keep me on the right track.
This stuff all works common sense that makes perfect sense. My problem with training is a large family. Each person interacts in there own way. If I’m away for the weekend come Monday I will need to start over.

I'm really glad I found your channel and this video in particular! Solid information, great "skits" and analogies to illustrate the points, and a wonderful abbreviated outline at the end. Thanks for the work you've put into this!
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful.
Finally I've found a dog channel that's not 50% talking bullshit to make longer videos or trying to sell something. Very informative, good production, nice effects. Subscribed
Welcome!
The "emergency" scale up is what I'll be using big time.
Whoops!
At least she hears "I love you" often enough to learn it refers to her.
Thank you!
excellent tips, thank you!
What you said made perfect sense.
literally was doing 1 and 2 with our husky we got from the pound. No wonder he has a hard time. Will put all 3 to good use! So helpful.
Just got a dog a few days ago. Gonna start using this immediately!
Dude...
So, you are awesome.
You are about to save me and my puppy a lot of frustration.
Thank you.
You are the best! I love all your videos! I'm always sharing them and telling people about them. this is a channel that deserves to be RUclips famous.
Thank you, Sarah!
This is by far THE best channel for dog advice...Kudos
We have a rescue dobe. He was previously called Tyson.. we hated the name and altered it to Tybear bless him.. thanks for the tips x
Oh my gosh, my grandsons have used so many of the training words sooooo much this has been a constant retraining
I am guilty of using my dogs name when correcting them 😞. Now to break the habit. 😂
First step is noticing. Now you're on it! 👍
@@ingo-w ~ excellent reply 😊
I have a 7 year old dog that has never been properly trained, I don't live in an area with an obedience school and I've never trained a dog before. Thanks from a newbie at this!
Such great information! And it makes total sense. I will definitely not use my dogs name when I’m annoyed anymore. Awesome content as usual thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for the gracious comment. 🙏
Great job. You're very knowledgeable about your subject, and also a great communicator.
How do I focus my dog attention
So many of these strategies should be used by parents...
True story. ;)
If you had a 5 year old you know what just came out total b******* 5 year old has no sleep 5 year old don't listen to s*** dog does
That hurts
Right
@@jacobjordan7644 who hurt you
2:08 your example for what not to do, "LEO!!" is so close to my adopted dog's name (Cleo) that she got upset while I was watching this video
Sorry, Cleo!
lol
Stop lying
ismael madrigal ..?
This is really good info. It's so simple but you never think about it. And it's going to be an adjustment to your own behaviour, I yelled my dog's name negatively while watching this video. 🤦♂️
It's hard, I get it. I have to gently remind parents during class ALL OF THE TIME.
This channel is awesome, I have recently got a puppy and RUclips has been a huge resource for me. This is my favorite channel on here.
Thank you so much! Happy to help!
Uh oh.. I’ve been doing this for a while..
I’ve learned so much from this channel
It is so obvious once you have learned this. Thanks for the video !
Everything you talked about makes SO much sense! I’m so glad I came across it! Love your videos! Very on point! 🙌🏼 Thank you!
You're very welcome!
He always comes to that, no matter what, so I guess my whistle is “you must come now” 😉
I guess I wasn’t doing everything 85% wrong, as I thought, but 75% right 😜
Thanks for sharing. Very helpful.
Ohohoh, how did you get your two dogs to come and sit calmly together. Epic!!
You guys are so helpful with these videos I feel I am learning a lot not only about dogs but even about human psychology lol! Thank you so much ❤
Omg this video is so helpful as I have been experiencing these issues (ignoring me when I ask him to come) for a very long time. Thank you so much for the tips! I have no idea that keep calling his names on everything will have a negative impact. You definitely deserve more subscribers!!
Thanks! Good luck on turning things around!
Thanks. Now I have a deeper understanding of how to train my dog effectively.
BTW there are several worthwhile takeaways for parents of teenagers here as well...😉
LOL that is true about teenagers. Even employees!
Love this!
This is amazing! Waiting for my new puppy to arrive and am starting to feel ‘tooled-up’
Thanks 🙏
You got this!
This is such an amazing video. I watched it right after I had got my puppy and have been trying to follow the advice. Thank you so so much!!
Amazing stuff, as always. To the point and very easy to follow
Much appreciated!
Wow this is on point! Buddy picked it up immediately so great, thanks!
You're welcome!
just got a an American bulldog puppy your videos have helped heaps thank you
I LOVE your channel! I just got my first puppy, these are life savers! Thank you!
Extremely useful guide video, subscribed already. Thanks
An exceptional video 👍
I’ve definitely decided to take my puppy’s name ever single time before Praise 😀
Brilliant! Thanks - our dogs have a couple nicknames each. Good to know the right way to use them. The biggest challenge will be to get everyone in the house to implement the tips!
Yup, that's the linchpin right there! Good luck!
Keep it up
Just found your channel today and it’s already helped me with my crazy puppy!! Love your content! Thank you!!
My pleasure!
This stuff all works common sense that makes perfect sense. My problem with training is a large family. Each person interacts in there own way. If I’m away for the weekend come Monday I will need to start over.
For sure, I hear you. Getting human compliance is the hardest part and usually where the biggest breakdowns are.
i'm so in love with this channel! the information is priceless, the aesthetics is gorgeous, and the host is 👀💯✨
Thank you so much!!
Wow I was doing it all wrong 😱 Making these changes immediately, thank you so much!
This is an extremely helpful video. I am getting my puppy this Friday and I would've never thought of the things I learned before watching this. Thank you!
Very helpful! I’m guilty of using my dog’s name as a reprimand, but now I’ll be making a conscious effort to stop. Thank you!
My dog is bilingual. In commands, love words and song. And he always responds to his name because he knows I adore him.
thank you for this! first time pup owner and this is so informative! the video is also very well made! You're doing a great service!
Glad it was helpful!
I use my puppy name all wrong, I will start practicing change things around.
Ty for the really instructive videos
