@@megelizabeth9492 yes !! have you seen the button boards people make for their dogs where the dog presses the buttons and each one says a different word ? they understand language enough to form sentences with this method , they just don't have a mouth that can articulate like we do ☺️
I agree dogs are not much different from children. You teach them proper manners around others, you potty train them, and they need constant guidance and love. I really love your videos!

Thank you I’m getting a dog it’s been a while 4 years and I held it had a Belgian sheepdog got her at the Humane Society. Helping me feel much more confident about bringing a dog into my home- I need to have her as trained as possible so I can get her special training to be a service and support dog as well as part of the family. I was feeling really anxious because I’m not good at being dominant or even attempting it, I’m more reserved and like to take softer routes when possible but 99% of people told me you can’t train a dog (or any animal) like that.
Me and my partner just got our first puppy. After a year of them trying to convince me, I caved and we welcomed a 3-month-old Lab into our home. She is amazing but is of course still in need of training. Your videos have helped me take strides in the right direction for behavioral management and helped ease my anxiety. Thank you.
I'm a teacher and I have been one for a looooong time. It's been a while since I was given the Harry Wong book. This was a great review for my classroom and my dog!🤗
You gotta know you're doing something "right" when you've got people who follow your videos and they don't even have a dog!! That's awesome. I really appreciate your input and videos. I am rapidly becoming a fan! Thanks for the time and detail you put into this work.
You are fantastic! I’m getting a puppy in a month and I am feeling so confident because of you. You make my brain feel like a sponge with your teaching style. Thank you so much
I like how you always share principles so one can understand and project into everyday training. Way better than many other videos that tell us how to ask dog do useless tricks.
it's all about building habits as I've discovered with my two. they operate like clockwork and pick up routines so quickly. it's lovely to observe. 'if this, then that'. they are such a joy to watch and such observers of my little habits. they have us down pat! and then there are the times when they are not 'getting it' as I think. but like you say Ian, that is more to do with my approach than their ability. all of what you say rings true for me and I imagine if my two could contribute to this they would howl in, hear, hear, get your act together human!

I'm an educator (now not working due to disability as a result of a stroke a couple of years ago )I really enjoyed this video because it rings so true for me. My master's thesis was about the parallels of early childhood education and training of pet animals. At first my project was met with some resistance, but was eventually accepted My unruly 4th grade class became the model class. now My newly adopted rescue dog will be another test of the strategies I enumerated in my thesis. Like you, I recently came across my old copy of Wong's book along with a copy of my thesis and exit evaluation. I believe i'll be watching more and more of your videos. keep up the good work!
I stumbled onto another one of your videos- I'm ashamed to say, by poking a bit of fun at some advice I saw that you'd written. Imagine my surprise when I discovered you are, actually...my new god!! Amazing and absolutely understandable information!! I live in a rural area, and we are lacking in trainers, so I'm having to go everywhere to get the RIGHT information for my pups. I'm HOME. Thank you, we're picking up our rehomed dog tomorrow and your videos have been invaluable. Husband and I have already discussed boundaries (eg where in the yard he will potty, which rooms he can go in, whether or not he's allowed on the couch, etc etc) and routines right down to when he'll be fed each day. Your tips about deciding on boundaries right from the get go have been invaluable, I think too many new dog owners bring the dog home, let them loose and "see how they go" before deciding on boundaries. Next thing they know the dog is lying all over the couch, chewing their shoes, and pooping in their flower garden, and it's very difficult to fix. Thank you for your to-the-point tips!
As a fellow teacher, I adore this video. I re read Harry’s book every few years! I love your videos, they are logical and simple. The KISS principle really is the best approach. Keep it simple and be consistent! Thanks for all of your hard work!
I have just finished my teaching degree, and am an absolute dog fanatic. I so appreciate your tips in this video -- this is very sound advice, both practically and pedagogically. You can consider me a new subscriber!
This is perfect! When I connected my puppy’s age to my grandson’s age (grandson will be 2 in Dec, pit bull pup will be 2 next April) it made training and disciplining so much easier. I haven’t perfected anything but my patience and allowance for learning have increased. Great video!
I’m literally watching all your videos to educate myself and make notes before my puppy comes in a months time :)). I want to be the best owner i can be for my first dog, so thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!!
Finally someone who understands dogs and how they behave. I love your advices and I agree with you. I use the same technique as you and I have well behave shelter dog, so it works.
Amen! The biggest problem in our home is inconsistent dog training procedures! Can’t seem to get my fellas in the house to go along with the program. It’s a miracle that my border collie has learned as much as he has- that being considered. Of course , I’m the Alpha, and I get compliance; they get frustration.
I have been binge watching your videos! My family is getting a puppy in July and I have been unsure of what to do with my current dog. She has free run of the house even though she has accidents on occasions. My husband is against crate training and I sent him your video on it. I’m hoping with the help of your videos to set my girl up for success and the new puppy when he comes. Thank you!
Your style choices might be dubious, but your training is impeccable. Having lost my old, beautifully trained 15 year-old Beardie before Christmas, I now have a fabulous, but anarchic Beardie pup. These videos are reminding me of the training I need to do once again. And I'm sharing them with other owners of pups from the same batch. Thank you
Hey, great videos! I have been watching a bunch of them recently. I did have one comment, for videos like this one could you also put examples for each talking point? It is sometimes difficult to get a better understanding of the point without a demonstration. Some videos, like the 5 steps with a new puppy do this, and it is great.
Simpawtico Dog Training Awesome! Keep up the good work, these videos have been wonderful in helping my wife and I get ready for a new dog. We might actually adopt a brother/sister pair, any tips for training multiple dogs at once?
Oooh that's a special kind of challenge, especially with litter mates. They kind of egg each other on like Thing 1 and Thing 2 in the Cat In The Hat. Definitely do a lot of work together, but also do a lot of work one-on-one. You could do it simultaneously if you have one handler per dog (i.e. you and your wife). And also, don't rely on them to socialize each other; make sure they have plenty of opportunities to play with other dogs. That can sometimes backfire as housemates get super-socialized to each other and then turn ultra-reactive to other dogs. Don't be scared-just get them out of the house a lot and give them opportunities for good, unstructured play. Good luck!
Simpawtico Dog Training Good tips! We were wondering about training them together or apart, sounds like a healthy mix is good. We play to socialize them as much as we can, thanks!
Ian -- this is such a great video. I work in education, and I constantly make connections between the classroom and dog training all the time. I definitely set learning goals for my dog, and I find myself asking her to "make good choices" all the time.
Hi Sophia! Thank you for the praise. I think it's hilarious you say that to your dogs because I've said the exact same thing to them many times! Us dog lovers are a special kind of weird! 😂
Great video doesn't do this any justice; it's phenomenal!! As a dog trainer, I teach many of the very same things you go over in your videos and use much of the same terminology. This is what Professional Dog Training is all about. Keep up the great work. I share your videos all the time with my clients now because everything is so very clear, concise, and easy to understand. Not to mention, very informative. Thanks for all the hard work you put into making them.
I have watch several of your videos and I love how you intelligently present the information of dog training. I recently adopted a new pup and while this isn’t my first rodeo, it’s been a while. Your information is helpful and positive. Keep it up!
I am not disciplined however for my furbabies I will start, they need to be better dogs, my biggest issues are walks, they easily go into pack aggressive/attack mode! Also boredom while I'm at work, I may need to learn how to crate train them or limit their area. W are a work in progress. This video gives me some points to work with about how to go about it. Thanks!
Hi Sally. It's hard to design a "one size fits all" kind of schedule, since every household and every dog is different. We can suggest some of the most important things to do first, but your own schedule, layout, and needs will determine the bulk of what to do first. Usually I suggest that potty training (for all ages) is #1, setting a meal schedule is #2, and household routines/manners is #3. Everything else kind of fits in behind those.
Haha. I had taken my prior experience from teaching and applied a lot of the principles to training my dog mostly because it "made sense". Good to have someone knowledgeable confirming that's the case!
I'm getting a first generation shichon puppy December 22. SO EXCITED!!! Your videos really help me😀😄😊He's black and we named him tux( short for tuxedo )
HAHAhA. I love tour introduction. I always say a dog is like a perpetual 2-year-old. They are great fun, but they require a lot of work and supervision. So worth it.
This guy is legit. I was a bit sceptical, but he speaks perfect truth. Think I'm gonna subscribe, which will be the 2nd time I've subscribed to anyone since 2009. 109K subscribers is far too low, more people need to see these videos.
Simpawtico Dog Training We just adopted a 2 year old Shih Tzu Yorkipoo, we think he might have some extreme attachment anxiety. Do you have any tips for a dog that is very attached to only one family member?
So I am a full time trainer (I mainly work with reactive/aggressive dogs) but it is soooo exciting to see another trainer coming up on youtube to recommend to clients! I love how you touch up on topics that many other popular trainers on this platform don't discuss. Because it's very obvious on how to teach sit, stay, come, etc. However, you are approaching the other side of training which is really where the majority of success comes from! Super excited to see what else you cover in the future (: May I ask where you're based out of?
Hi there! Thanks so much! It's nice to connect with ya! I'm based out of upstate New York, specifically the Southern Tier-Elmira, Horseheads, Corning-service area. Keeps me hopping, for sure! And you?
Seconded. Teaching obedience commands and tricks is easy. I honestly care more about the "general living" and "day to day management" stuff. I love this channel because of it.
Your videos are amazing; so well done! I'm also a teacher and have read a lot of books on animal behaviorism. You're spot on. When I first started teaching 12 years ago, I used a lot of the Wongs' book resources and what I was doing at home in training my new puppy. I now have a puppy again and so have been freshening up my reading and researching and found your vids. You're right. Just put in the work and time now at the start of the dog's life and you can practically coast the rest of their life; not unlike the first month in a classroom. Good management means that the rest of the year is smooth. Thank you!!!!
I'm really trying to course correct so that my Pap Pup will be able to relax herself and settle if she has to be alone. Which is very, very rare, but is inevitable. Although she sleeps in her crate well at night. During the day, if we are home, I have to KEEP bringing her back to "her doggie bed" with something tempting, give praise etc, etc.... this can take hours. As long as I move around the kitchen and she has eyes on me, she will stay, the minute I move to another room she's up. Thinking of getting a second crate for the living area begin crate training all over.
We're trying to figure out how to live with the dog, have a dog, and still have our lives with work and school and housework and Lawn work and just everything it's very very hard. I need a dog support group!! I know people do it everyday and hundreds of thousands of people have dogs I guess we're just not very smart and figuring it out very well
Excelent video! Is there a road map I could get that tells me step by step what I should work on first? Getting ready to adopt an adult dog from the shelter and we are complete newbies.
I've been wanting a dog of my own for a very long time, but I have been in college and didn't want to get a pooch in an uncontrollable environment. I'm finally graduated and should be getting an offer for a full time position this week! [the company really liked me and i've been told some paper work has to be handled before they give me the legit offer, but it is coming :)] I visited a shelter over the weekend and decided that if all goes as planned with the offer that I would be adopting one of their ~1 year old dogs, likely a husky named Kimchi. I am planning on asking the company for about a month of buffer room so I can enjoy my last bits of freedom lol, but mainly so I can get the dog accustomed to my house. Never the less, once I realized all the pieces were falling together I became a nervous about properly training the dog so my dad doesn't get annoyed with him/her while I am at work (even though I know he secretly is planning to love the shit outta that dog). I ended up finding your videos while doing research and I must say I feel so much more confident and at ease after watching your videos. This channel is absolutely amazing and I hope to report back soon with my results. Thank you so much!
Hi, great video! I think I watched every video you uploaded 😁. I have a 4 month old and i've been following your tips and they really worked out 🙌🏽 but i still don't know what to do when the dog make a mess when I leave her for a while. She grabs whatever is within reach and destroys it in pieces 👎🏼 even though i leave the chew toy and everything.. its just not working. Your videos taught me a lot but how can i make her understand whats wrong? Greetings from Argentina!!!
I've had the hardest time getting my pup to stop chewing the furniture despite having chew toys readily available and spraying previously chewed areas with anti-chew spray. I admit to having disciplined my dog physically, but after watching your video I have seen that there are better ways. I guess my question is, what can i change in my routine or what can I do to change or, as you say, reteach this behaviour?
Hi Siegfred! Probably first thing you can do is try to manage the behavior first by restricting access to the things your pup chews when you can't supervise. That could be crate training, or just confining to a safe room or something. As long as your dog can still do it, they'll keep doing it. Then, come from the back end and teach mouth behaviors like Take It+Leave It+Drop It, and get your dog into chewtoys (which I think you saw that vid because you commented after this one, so you're on the right track!). The management aspect will help you reduce errors which would set your training back. Good luck!
I have watched a handful of your videos and plan on watching more for sure! I recently got a puppy and I’m struggling to effectively train him. I was wondering if you could make a video on how to properly and effectively discipline. As I was watching one of your videos he decidedly jump up on the bed and pee. Thank you!
Glade you added a new video I was wondering if you could do a video about dog muzzles and how to know if you need one or just your opinion on dog muzzles
Muzzles are a good thing when you're working with a dog with poor Acquired Bite Inhibition (ABI) that are either reactive or aggressive (and the two can cross over). Muzzles should definitely be conditioned to be good things and that takes time. Plus, there's the decision to do a basket muzzle or a soft muzzle. Each has pros/cons and not all dogs can wear one or the other. So definitely do your homework, and get a behaviorist involved if you feel like you're at the point where you need one.
Simpawtico Dog Training I don't have the money to get a behavioralist involved I just want to get one so I can introduce my dog to my neighbors that way if there kids move to Quick she can't bite them what do you think or is there a better approach to get her used to new people
I love your videos - you're so articulate and logical! We have an 8-month boston terrier-pom mix who has been amazing in most ways but we've definitely had to up our game in the last month or so as she's begun to spook more easily and become more assertive. She gets a lot of affection and I'm wondering if there's a connection between these things. I've watched a lot of videos that suggest dogs "earn" affection... we have her in a routine and put a lot of time into training, but I'm wondering if affection is something we need to address. Any input welcome!
It's just guessing from her age, I think that she is in the fear period. You can research on socialization tips during this period. Some dogs accidentally learn that aggressive display or fearful display will pay off from human's reactions to some incidents, but I don't think that dogs should earn human's affection. Some dogs may not enjoy how humans show affection to dogs, either.
Your personality and your passion for dogs makes you one of top dog trainers of RUclips!
As a behaviour analyst, I can say that the basic principles of learning are the same for dogs AND humans. Everything I know about human learning, with the exception of language and higher level discrimination, is applicable to dogs.
True story. 😉
Agreed. Most of this is same for children.
And dogs can even learn to recognize (and potentially use, if some of the recent studies of use of ACC hold up) language, at least to some degree.
@@megelizabeth9492 yes !! have you seen the button boards people make for their dogs where the dog presses the buttons and each one says a different word ? they understand language enough to form sentences with this method , they just don't have a mouth that can articulate like we do ☺️

Of course , I’m the Alpha, and I get compliance; they get frustration.
you have one of the best dog training channels out there. Excellent 9 points
This is the best YT channel if you have a dog or want one! Your tips have helped me a lot! Thank You!!!!
Thank you!
You're welcome! good luck!
Yes, I agree. The new ones I'm working will have a lot more of that in them. Thanks!
Just got a standard poodle puppy. It's been a while since we've had a dog so I really appreciate the videos especially this one.
Hurray for Wong! I feel less anxious about my new puppy when I think about it this way!
Thank YOU!
I have watch several of your videos and I love how you intelligently present the information of dog training. I recently adopted a new pup and while this isn’t my first rodeo, it’s been a while. Your information is helpful and positive. Keep it up!
You've got amazing video's!!!! I don't even have a dog......
jorene wuisman same ive watched all there videos
*videos. He really does have amazing and informative videos
I bought one last night !
But do you have kids?😀
I'm taking notes for this. *Thank you.*
Thanks!
If you could make more videos on the foundations needed for a well behaved dog, please do. Those are the most helpful tips!
That weekly schedule is awesome. Please share as sometimes- we have no idea where to start, when to introduce new things etc...
There are TONS of parallels!
I'm getting a first generation shichon puppy December 22. SO EXCITED!!! Your videos really help me😀😄😊He's black and we named him tux( short for tuxedo )
I think I need to have a schedule and task list for each day. This was great for concepts. My puppy is frenetic!
HAHAhA. I love tour introduction. I always say a dog is like a perpetual 2-year-old. They are great fun, but they require a lot of work and supervision. So worth it.
So true! Thanks for watching!
This guy is legit. I was a bit sceptical, but he speaks perfect truth.
Think I'm gonna subscribe, which will be the 2nd time I've subscribed to anyone since 2009.
109K subscribers is far too low, more people need to see these videos.
Yay thanks for uploading. We have been missing your amazing videos!!!!!!
We’re hoping to adopt a dog soon and I’m so excited! Your videos are very helpful to watch before I adopt her!!
Good luck!!
Simpawtico Dog Training We just adopted a 2 year old Shih Tzu Yorkipoo, we think he might have some extreme attachment anxiety. Do you have any tips for a dog that is very attached to only one family member?
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING YOUR TIME TO RECORD THOSES EXCELLENT VIDEOS. :-)
Super excited to see what else you cover in the future (:
May I ask where you're based out of?
Hi there! Thanks so much! It's nice to connect with ya! I'm based out of upstate New York, specifically the Southern Tier-Elmira, Horseheads, Corning-service area. Keeps me hopping, for sure! And you?
That's awesome! I mainly work in Houston and the surrounding areas (:
Keep up the great content!
Seconded. Teaching obedience commands and tricks is easy. I honestly care more about the "general living" and "day to day management" stuff. I love this channel because of it.
This video is well lit and it pleases me.
Very good overview of managing a dog in a home.
Child=a human
Dog=an awasome creature.
I have 2 dogs and they are the best.
And they well trained by me.
I aaaabsolutely adore this channel its saving my home and relationship with my new pupp !
I dig your video presentations. Well thought out, visually interesting, concise and valuable information delivered.
Excellent advice.
We've been waiting for a new video. Thanks for uploading 🐶☺️
Daisy Duke The Goldens me too....I have been waiting for a new video....his videos are informative and cool!!!!!
Im gonna get a 1yr old yorkshire this friday. Rlly useful.
your videos are the best I've seen so far, thank you!!!
We're trying to figure out how to live with the dog, have a dog, and still have our lives with work and school and housework and Lawn work and just everything it's very very hard. I need a dog support group!! I know people do it everyday and hundreds of thousands of people have dogs I guess we're just not very smart and figuring it out very well
Amazing!! Tomorrow I'll be a much better dog owner, because of this highly educational video. Thank you! Thank you so much. 😄
You're very welcome!
Excelent video! Is there a road map I could get that tells me step by step what I should work on first? Getting ready to adopt an adult dog from the shelter and we are complete newbies.
Excellent info. Thank you.
Your videos are incredible
Thank you!
Great video and helpful information. Thanks for this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love your videos! We got a puppy a few weeks ago and I will definitely be utilizing your tips
Nice video! Very informative! Thanks
I love your videos! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching!
I love your videos you make everything so clear😀
Audrey Bean yes, he explains everything so well and so much details!
Thanks!
P.S. I DO have a dog so this is really good information for me, and I've been raising dogs most of my life, but need a new and improved approach!
Thank you for the video.
lol. "Jesus, i know." Love the videos!
Love these tips!
Thank you!
Great videos, getting a French Mastiff pup soon these videos help get a better plan than before.
Awesome! Congratulations on your Mastiff puppy! I love Mastiffs. 😉
Awesome video!
Simpawtico Dog Training I don't have the money to get a behavioralist involved I just want to get one so I can introduce my dog to my neighbors that way if there kids move to Quick she can't bite them what do you think or is there a better approach to get her used to new people
U r the best on RUclips!
Thank you!
Another great, informative video!
Great video, thanks!
Thank you for the new video! Finally! :D
I know! It's been too looooooong! Hopefully getting back into a shooting schedule! Thanks for sticking it out!
