****UPDATE**** Since adopting Ezra in 2019, a lot of new information has been released about Redemption Paws and how they operate. Although we had a good experience and I am very grateful to have Ezra in our lives, I will say the organization has never once followed up since the adoption. I would strongly advise that you conduct your own research on the organization before proceeding.
Foreal, parents need some sort of therapy available before the decide to reproduce... Not just pop out some kids cuz that's what "society" wants from you 🙃
I would add #4 - always absolutely RESPECT your dog. When they give us a warning growl we need to respect that, because it is dog language for "I'm not liking this, please back off a little". It's how dogs communicate with each other as well. Many dogs, especially rescues, do not like to be smothered or over cuddled until they have fully developed a relationship with us and learned to trust that we will not hurt them. 💖 😊
Good advice. The dog I’m adopting is a rescue, but a super-snuggler and very affectionate. He did once give a small growl (closed mouth, no teeth) when his paws were being handled too much (between the toes), and after that he was chill again.
@Grow house 420 depends on where you live. where i live you need to pay atleast 200€ animal welfare fee for a dog, most of the time. the price varies if the animal is not vaccinated, chipped, neutered.. etc.

My husband and I rescued a 1-year-old Lab/Staffordshire Terrier mix (68 pounds) in July 2021. Between us we have raised and trained five Lab puppies between us. (Companion dog, gallery greeter and athletic upland bird Retriever.) I "thought" I was well prepared but this was a more challenging experience than even I expected. We bonded within three days but her energy level was MUCH higher than even I expected. My husband and I are age 76 and 71 and now live in a busy condo community. We previously lived on five rural acres and with our previous dogs which I now see made a big difference. Our Ginger Rogers is loving, sweet, cuddly and loyal girl but she is a huge handful in a condo. She is the smartest dog we have ever had but she has a lot of trust issues (fear of men and other dogs.) We walk her 7 to 11 miles per day to burn off her energy level. We thought that being a Lab she would be a bit more laid back but this is not the case at one-year-old. In hindsight she would have been a better choice at our old rural property vs. a dog-friendly condo. This video is very "on the mark."
My all time dream was to have a dog when i got one as a child i was so dedicated we always took her outside to play she was energetic needed to fullfill that lol she was a sweetheart i made her run with me i also cuddled her when she wanted and made sure she had food it was so wonderful i miss that so much it’s still my dream to have a dog now but she will always be my first girl
This is the best video I have watched about adopting animals, a lot of it applies to adopting cats too. The financial aspect is really important, especially considering pet insurance. It's stressful getting very high vets bills especially if you are on a low income. Good advice about considering the dog's temperament and energy levels, and whether realistically you can walk them three times a day. And also about how it takes time for the bond and the trust to develop.

I've tried to adopt a dog once, but the shelter was hellbent on making it as painful as possible. Why they think anyone is going to pay hundreds of dollars to grovel at their feet, have the privacy of your home invaded, and go through a 6 month trial when you can just get a pup for less time and money is beyond me. When they ask why no one wants to adopt, the answer is in their policy. It's just amazing they can't connect the dots.
I think the process is like that to prevent time wasters or half assed adopters, if people are willing to go through the process it means they are dedicated to adopting and providing the dog with what it needs. That being said I do agree that it is a bit extreme and probably a lot more dogs could be homed if it wasn't like this. But just think about how many dogs are returned to the shelter even with this rigamarole. It's difficult.
We always adopt dogs, and they usually come with some kind of baggage, but we have always been able to work it out. They make wonderful pets. Just takes patience and understanding. They all have their own personalities, just like we do. Dogs are just wonderful gifts from God.
in my experience, medium to large dogs, as a rule, don't like to messed with when they're sleeping - just like most creatures, so his annoyance & snapping at you was completely understandable. they also don't like to be hugged/crowded. I had a Chow/Shepherd/Retriever mix - he was a big, fluffy, sharp-toothed, purple-tongued beast who was actually a big baby at heart but would kill, literally, to protect us, lol - I could play with him, pet him, rub him, do all sorts of things ppl do with their dogs - he tolerated a lot of stuff that my kids or I would do to him, lol - but even he would growl if approached the wrong way while sleeping or picked up or "hugged" lol.
My family has always had rescue animals. We've taken strays and dogs that the previous owners didn't want. Never understood what's hard about it unless you got one that's pretty messed up.
This is a very true and accurate video of adopting a rescue. You never really know what you are going to get and you need to be ready for anything. I feel we were blessed to find a dog that is so sweet but he has his mischievous side and has chewed his share of shoes. Great video!
Even spaying or neutering the dog you've just adopted from a shelter can open up health issues that the shelter or rescue was unaware of when they first took the dog in. Back in 2019 of December me and my family had adopted at the time a 5 month old shepherd mix puppy whom the shelter had named Zander, the shelter that was a few hours away from us, we had already done a meet and greet with the pup before my mom decided to place a hold on him. Fast forward to 2020 and Zander, yes we kept the name that shelter called him, and he's escaping the yard cause he wasn't neutered yet, we had to do it. So the day comes and Zander goes in for his surgery only for us to find out that he has a blood disorder, which means it takes a lot longer then normal for him to stop bleeding if he has to go under the knife.
I’m picking up my new rescue from the shelter tomorrow! Finalizing her adoption ❤ she’s been at that shelter for 6 months! But she feels like the perfect fit for our family and I’ve been wanting to own one forever and finally can 🫂
I rescued my golden Pyrenees from a rescue 10yrs ago and she is such a sweetie! My fiance has been saying we need to get a younger dog before she is to old to be a mentor dog (for basic behavior training) and God laughed at me by putting a new rescue dog right in front of us (dumped with an aquantance not from a shelter). I did sleep on it for a few days but he is coming home with us today, time to start learning about a new family member lol.
Really cool insights, thanks. It's the financial concerns that feel MOST prohibitive. Dang, I think I'd be good but haven't had a dog since I was a boy. The money is truly the largest concern. I can sacrifice all the hassle of mess, rearranged lifestyle, damage, time, what have you. Insurance may be a viability 🤔🤔
Thank you so much for a very informative video. I'm adopting a dog from the human society and picking her up tomorrow. I'm so excited and nervous (in a good way) at the same time. Your advice will certainly help me.
Great video with lots of honest information. I’m about to adopt a rescue from Texas as well. I’m watching videos to get some fabulous tips on how to care for her in the absolute best way. Thank you 😊
I adopted a rescue dog fom Hungary a few years back. He was with me for 3 days and then one day I came home and found him dead in my apartment. He had epilepsy and no one told me that he was sick. Could be possible that no one even knew that he had epilepsy but it was a very traumatic thing to witness. Especially when he was my first ever pet. I've been thinking of getting another rescue (bc I do think it's important to help dogs in need) but I'm scared something like this will happen again. He was only a one year old, very kind and very well behaved even though he had been through a lot in Hungary... rest in peace Arthur.
I’m ready to adopt a rescue dog. I reached out to a rescue place for Maltese in California because I am very familiar with this breed. But I haven’t heard back from them yet. My company offers pet insurance. Thanks for your tips. Very helpful
Awsome video!! Since watching this video, I actually decided not to adopt just yet. I realized how unprepared My girlfriend and I were to commit with our tight living situation. Thank you!
Adopting our new little buddy tomorrow. Rescued from Hungary after being found chained up in cold outside and brought over here to the UK. Can’t wait to give him all the love he and all dog deserve
I recently found myself browsing a State Rescue/Adoption. There were photos of dogs on the kill list. I wanted to adopt one, but did not realize her size until, her weight was mentioned on a video. As an older person who had major surgery, I felt concerned that she could easily pull me over if she suddenly decided to chase a squirrel for instance. I was offered another dog of similar size a beautiful, but older dog, who had been at the shelter for almost an entire year. However, though I was told he walked well on a lead, he was just as big. I ended up adopting a much smaller dog, who threatened to bite the shelter staff, which I was told would get her killed. I suspect the first dog, was killed, because she was on the Euthanasia List. Difficult to make decisions remotely, I feel sad and guilty, not thinking a beautiful and abused animal likely died, because of me. As a vegetaria, this is distressing. Please, Julia is correct, part of adopting should be to be able to ask questions and get answers. One thing I noticed is that the particular shelter is not consistant when it represents the size of dogs. As a younger person, size would not have mattered much, but as a Retired person, I need to stay healthy to be able to care for my other pets. Ask if a dog has a high prey drive, or not, to make sure other pets would remain safe. These may sound like small details, but in reality they are important. A big dog would be intimidating for my 15lb blind Mini-Spitz who is toothless, he is uncomfortable even when a large dog approaches him at the park. I have cats as well as rabbits, a dog that is likely to attack them would not be a good fit. Please consider adopting a Rescue Dog, don't buy thousands are killed at shelters every day through not fault of their own, they are let down by humans. They all deserve responsible, kind and loving homes!
There are two leash points - one on the back and one on the chest. The one on the chest is better for training and redirecting to prevent the dog from pulling!
I am so nervous 💗 I have a phone interview with a private owner who is looking for someone to adopt both of there chihuahuas. I never adopted a dog before, I hope I nail it and be able to adopt them both.
I'm waiting on a yes from landlord. Been severely depressed and sister recommended a dog. So if it's a yes I want to provide a dog a good healthy home.
After being aware of all these dogs in shelters, I am in the mind that should I be getting a pet, it should be from a shelter. But there is a lot more to it, than what you see at first glance. That's why I am seeing videos like this
Anything I or shelter would do to ease my concerns of dogs health? Medical bills could break one's bank. This is the 1st question even before any potential behavior problems.
I'm literally so scared I can barely exercise myself and now exercise a dog...... Nah but actually I'm really scared like I wanna get one but...... Now that I think about it..... 😭 idk if I'll be able to train it I mean like I probably don't have enough money for it too ugh!!!! This is so complicated I should've thought of this sooner 💀🤦🏻♀️😭
Honestly, my in-laws got a very energetic puppy 2 years ago that they were unprepared for. I warned them to get a less active dog but they thought they could handle it. Fast-forward 2 years, I mainly take care of her even though I wouldn't have thought I'd be able to handle such a high-maintenance dog before. She's so much work but it's so rewarding. I was very inconsistent with trying to be physically active before but she has motivated me to be way more active now which has been very good for me too. Now I feel so sad whenever she goes to stay with my in-laws. If you're the kind of person who needs somebody to push you to do something, like me, then a dog could be really beneficial for that. But not everybody can handle it, my in-laws couldn't so just try and be realistic. The money is a lot too. It's a tough decision.
It's mandatory, most rescues and shelters will have done it already unless the dog is a puppy and not of age yet. Rescues and shelters are in the business of dog population control so that's why it's necessary.
if a dog chew on shoes and stuff its not just cause hes bored. its stress relief. especially shoes cause ur smell is very strong on shoes. so often means seperation anxiety. buy some chew toys and let the dog chew on it on his place when ur gone
@@emaced256 sadly not. But my grandparents old one when they went to the new owners the dog has been abandoned but now he is safe at a vet or something so we might take him but I’m not to sure
AN HOUR A DAY of direct attention 😂😭😭 Our dog Molly wants CONSTANT attention. An hour a day would be heavenly. We're lucky if she manages to happily play alone for 10 minutes. I take her to the dog park for at least an hour every day to tire her out and she still gets home and wants to play nonstop. And if she gets bored she'll chew on furniture, cushions, get into the recycling bin, bark at the door, etc. And this is a HUGE improvement on when she was a puppy (she's 2 now). I wish she wanted to just sit and watch TV with us sometimes. I'm so jealous of all of you with low-maintenance dogs. We're getting another dog to keep her company and hopefully that will help. At least I'm a lot more physically active now than I was before Molly haha
This video is from 2 yrs ago so i don't know if i would get a response. My gf is in India and India has huge stray dog population. Some states even burn stray dogs alive. Se states recently have banned people from feeding stray dogs and cats. Their governments find it a pain to neuter strays so the only choices are adoption, citizens getting dogs spayed or neutered or the government taking the stray dogs and killing them en mass. My gf feeds stray dogs right in front of her house. There are 3 puppies 36 days old. She is financially comfortable in taking in 1. Can you please advice how she can while the mother dog is still there, whom my gf feeds every day and night? The mother lost 5/6 of her puppies previously when my gf wasn't in the same city. She's in double mind that the puppies need the mother for a while longer, but the stray situation is so bad that there are dogs attacking other puppies that have died. She's found an adoption drive where she can take the rest of the 2 pups, but she wants to save 1 herself.
You're in it now mate, put in the work and your pup will pay you back with so much love. Don't give up!!! Ps there are so many great dog training vids here on RUclips if you can't afford a trainer ❤
I came here to say the same thing. PLEASE go to your LOCAL rescues, at least ethical ones, instead of supporting organizations like them. Of course I’m glad everything worked out for them, however the free promo makes me twitch
@@noseyandneutral There aren't really many local rescues in Toronto. I'm looking into it and I guess local dogs get adopted a lot more than they are abandoned here which is awesome. All of the shelter dogs I can find are from the US or from overseas. So it's either that, a breeder, or no dog for most of us in Toronto.
@@monkiram if you’re in a rush to adopt a dog, then that’s on you. But there are enough dogs for adoption to not support an unethical company. No justification needed
I have been there and heard the best known pro dog trainer say it: ' Get the best dog you can get ' in a shelter or from a rescue group... I went through dog training classes right through CGC and even rehab of a male APBT that was from near the Michael Vick group. Common sense is GET a Pro to find you a dog and adopt it and give them some money ($20-40 is plenty) for their expertise! Go to professional trainer classes and don't lie and bluff... you are NOT a dog handler pro...
Lots of issues can be fixed w embarking your possible dog so you can see all the health issues they're prone to. But also a girl from my school rescued a dog & she kept blowing in his face bc she thought it was funny, even after being snapped at a few times. Eventually he bit off her lip..... she had to get face reconstruction surgery and the dog had to be euthanized. She now has a new rescue. 💀
I sit here surrounded by five dogs thrown away by other people, if I had one wish, it would be that everyone who gets a dog watch, and live by, this video. PS - don’t hover over and hug a dog, and teach your children not to. Dogs may grow to tolerate hugging, but it’s not native to them and more closely resembles an attack than affection in their language
I personally did not rehome a dog, if you watched and understood the video you would know that I was 8 years old at the time. A child does not rehome a dog. Sometimes rehoming a dog is the best decision - no situation is black and white. You should not keep your dog at all costs if you cannot provide all that a dog requires. If you are no longer in a place where you can fully support the dog and give it the best life possible without sacrificing your own well-being or financial situation, then rehoming can be the best option for the dog to live a happy and fulfilled life. There are many unforeseen events that occur in life that can change peoples' circumstances and cause them to be unable to properly care for their dog. The purpose of this video is to help prepare folks who have never owned a dog before - so that they can understand the full responsibility of having a dog and make an well informed decision on whether that is something they can commit to for the lifetime of a dog. If you are unable to show compassion to humans who need to make the right decision for themselves and their dog, then you shouldn't be leaving a comment on a video that is educating folks on understanding the lifelong commitment so they can avoid rehoming a dog as much as is within their control.

The pic at 1:14 is so cute. awwdorable!
This was VERY helpful, Julia. Thank you!
Great video with lots of honest information. I’m about to adopt a rescue from Texas as well. I’m watching videos to get some fabulous tips on how to care for her in the absolute best way. Thank you 😊
Thank you so much for this video. I'm about to adopt a beagle from a kill shelter and I'm really excited about it :)

Thanks so much for this, it really is a good information video before adopting a dog. ❤
Looked at a lot of videos, your's are the best. Thank you! I have learned so much
I’m adopting a beautiful husky lab mix. Her name is Athena and she’s a sweetheart ❤️
Invaluable information and advice. Thank you.
I’m ready to adopt a rescue dog. I reached out to a rescue place for Maltese in California because I am very familiar with this breed. But I haven’t heard back from them yet. My company offers pet insurance. Thanks for your tips. Very helpful
This was super helpful and informative. Thank you!
Awsome video!! Since watching this video, I actually decided not to adopt just yet. I realized how unprepared My girlfriend and I were to commit with our tight living situation. Thank you!
Thank you for putting this up.
Adopting our new little buddy tomorrow. Rescued from Hungary after being found chained up in cold outside and brought over here to the UK. Can’t wait to give him all the love he and all dog deserve
Awww congrats on your new friend! I hope to adopt soon myself 🥰
Any recommendations for pet insurance?
7:02. Is it ME or is the harness on upside down????? Leash should be behind the shoulders??? 🤓🤔
How did it go???
I am adopting because to get a breeder is about 5hours away and my mum cant drive so adopting is the best option
I'm waiting on a yes from landlord. Been severely depressed and sister recommended a dog. So if it's a yes I want to provide a dog a good healthy home.
How did it go
I'm glad I watched this video. I don't think I should get a dog now.
After being aware of all these dogs in shelters, I am in the mind that should I be getting a pet, it should be from a shelter. But there is a lot more to it, than what you see at first glance. That's why I am seeing videos like this
How she said that about her adoption dog pay out £1300 I getting pet insurance for my cat and my new adoption dog when I pick him up
Anything I or shelter would do to ease my concerns of dogs health? Medical bills could break one's bank. This is the 1st question even before any potential behavior problems.
Our sweet Daisy was a pound rescue and the Best Dog Ever 🥰 I'm a believer
Thank you for your input.
Hello!! I had a question in mind. Do you have to neuter/spay a dog more than once? Thanks!
Just once!
@@mejulialee Ok thank you!
If you adopt a dog can you decide whether you would want them spayed or neutered? Or is it mandatory
It's mandatory, most rescues and shelters will have done it already unless the dog is a puppy and not of age yet. Rescues and shelters are in the business of dog population control so that's why it's necessary.
@@pawdoptionguide4752 please please spay and neuter your dog
@@Z5Z5Z5 they already are, because I'm a responsible pet owner.
Great advice!❤️
if a dog chew on shoes and stuff its not just cause hes bored. its stress relief. especially shoes cause ur smell is very strong on shoes. so often means seperation anxiety. buy some chew toys and let the dog chew on it on his place when ur gone
Good vid. How can I persuade my mum to let me adopt one
Thanks! You could try fostering first and prove to her you’ll take full responsibility 👌
Julia Lee oh yh good idea thanks
@@joelbradshaw9102 did you get a dog?
@@emaced256 sadly not. But my grandparents old one when they went to the new owners the dog has been abandoned but now he is safe at a vet or something so we might take him but I’m not to sure
@@joelbradshaw9102 I hope you get to keep him
Video was super informative thank you!!!
Dogs are good training for a parent. If you can succeed with a dog, you can succeed with a child.
Is it state law that you have to get the dog neutered or before the dog is adopted it’s going to be neutered?
Usually county level enforcement.
Thanks for sharing
She is so pretty
I’m so ready but sooo scared I’m Going To mess this up 😩
AN HOUR A DAY of direct attention 😂😭😭 Our dog Molly wants CONSTANT attention.
Don't look at the breed while adopting. Unless it's a doberman
Dobies can be completely sweet
There’s only bad owners
noted but why doberman?
as far as i know dogs with good training are often very well behaved
15:12 😭😭😭😭😭 damn
So dogs “hug” to fight or show dominance
Im about to adopt a bull dog mix
Thanks
Nice video
I got a puppy, and i realise that i wasnt mentally prepared for this, especially biting, and eating almost everything he sees😢
You're in it now mate, put in the work and your pup will pay you back with so much love. Don't give up!!!
Ps there are so many great dog training vids here on RUclips if you can't afford a trainer ❤
Definitely need to do your research about Redemption Paws. A very unethical organization.
I came here to say the same thing. PLEASE go to your LOCAL rescues, at least ethical ones, instead of supporting organizations like them. Of course I’m glad everything worked out for them, however the free promo makes me twitch
Yelling at a dog that you don't know also doesn't help either or spraying them with water.
@@noseyandneutral Why is it unethical to bring rescue dogs from elsewhere for people here who are looking?
I spent 2k for things for my dog and 500 for my dog
Damn
my man, just tell her to keep the puppies and take care of them until they are mature
Beautiful ❤️
Hello Irena how are you doing today
nice dog
I have a cat and I kinda want a dog now but I don't wanna love one more than the other :(
The video I need
Is adopting a dog free?
Some shelters have reduced fee times, usually when they have lots of dogs and need the space.

Hello Jessica how are you doing today
I'm curious... how does "climate change" put a dog in such peril that you must save him?
Floods, hurricanes, any natural disaster affected by climate/weather.
Lots of dogs needed to be rescued after Katrina.
There are no "guarantees"...sometimes it is a bad fit. Accept it & move on.
You know that dogs got Rottweiler in him right..

I wish I had a dog :(
If you rehomed an dog you shouldn't be giving advice about about adopting dogs. Dogs are a life long commitment.
