This is the most in depth, easy to understand, and effective video I have ever seen for focused heel training. I’m trying to train my medical alert SD the basics on my own so I only have to pay for the specialized alert and response training and videos like this help me out so freaking much. Thank you so much for this video and anyone questioning if it works.. IT DOES. FANTASTICALLY.
The person who gave a thumbs down is a jealous trainer you are stealing the show when it comes to given out free lessons I am learning them all and my girl is doing great thank you
Lol! Thanks for the support, I appreciate it and I'm happy the training is helping. Also, be sure to join my new Facebook group to continue learning how to train your dog with direct support from me and the rest of the community. :) facebook.com/groups/NateSchoemers/
I recently adopted an 8 month old Belgian Malinois from the shelter and was overwhelmed with negative behavior that I’ve had to correct. Watching this video alone I put my dog in a focused heel and center walking command within a couple days. I’ve watched countless training vids, but this is the most comprehensive and helpful video I’ve watched. Thank you so much for providing an excellent Malinois training vid! My boy is a completely different dog !
The most complete and comprehensive dog training on RUclips. I’m getting my puppy in June. I’ve read 3 books and countless hours on RUclips. These videos are consistent between skills and it’s an approach that builds on the skills. I’m an experienced dog owner but this has taught me a seamless approach!
That's so awesome and thank you for the kind words! I really appreciate it. I also recently started a facebook group to support this RUclips channel and everyones training. You can find it at this link. I hope to see you there! :) facebook.com/groups/NateSchoemers/
This video made the difference between a continuation marker and a terminal marker clear in a way I hadn't completely understood before. Thank you so much for all your hard work in making these.
Let me say it's sooooooooo refreshing to see a trainer without corrections or a bunch of video edits. I don't think he even said "no" one time. I LOVE IT! You got a new subscriber. Can't wait to check out your other videos.
Wow one of the best and most comprehensive videos on heel I've ever found and I've searched and searched for something like this. Absolutely great. Anyone who follows this video and has the patience to get each step completed will have amazing results.
This is amazing. You explain each step so clearly and im starting with my dog doing this now and so far shes getting it so well! Her main struggle is focus and i was looking all over the internet on how i can teach her more consistent focusing. Shes a puppy still about 5mo old but she can learn easy. She already knows 5 commands that are basic ones. She loves to learn. I came across this and will forever follow you for sure. Thank you so much for making this!!!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing and I'm happy the video was helpful. If you want more focus, then I would also suggest this video. Check it out and let me know what you think. Cheers! ruclips.net/video/UkZ7ucpK9sc/видео.html
I want to thank you. I put all your info into practice as my heeling was lacking focus... Went back to basics, worked hard for few weeks then passed grade 5 obedience. This was what I needed to know to help her to achieve focused heeling. Cheers Nate it's all in the technique!
Nate Schoemer, as a dog trainer and sports obedience competitor, I agree with your video almost 100%. I seem to be seeing myself. Keep up the good work.
I’ve been looking for a simple step by step guide to help take my dogs obedience to the next level and get him ready for sporting work. This was great!
Best heel video I have seen. My malinois is 9 months old and a work in progress. I will definitely use this as my go-to for heel work! She is pretty good at it, but you gave so many more advice than I have seen before. Thanks!
Thankful!!!! To have you give these lessons free of charge❤❤❤ Everyone else charges so much when you click on them. I thank you so much🩷🩷🩷 Your training video is so complete and able to understand.
I love this video!!! I can teach tricks well but wasn’t sure how to do obedience like this and we’re getting a big dog this time! You broke it down easy to understand !!
For all civillians who have not been to multiple K9 courses, just know this is a cheat sheet and solid gold! Well done brother, very impressed! Easily top 2-3 best heel teaching videos I have ever seen. Well done!
lol! Yeah, that’s expected. We mark when the dog is looking at us, so that’s what the dog is being rewarded for. They look at the hand after the mark, because they know that they are getting paid. 😁
Yeah it makes sense. It just almost looks like "yes" commands the behavior of looking at the treat because the dog does it right after. But your methods are legit, thanks for the video.
Im doing this with a small dog, its a whole different experience...... would have loved to see the instructions with one. Thanks for video, great points.
The greatest dog training gem is stated in this video.. it is the very first step after rewarding my dog for looking at me he is so much more disciplined I went from an average trained dog to looking like a somewhat professional in 1 video! Absolutely fantastic subscribed
I have started to re-watch the lessons again. I started off teaching Oscar to focus. He learned to do that and I went on to something else. He was doing a heel-sit, and for the most part being loose lease. We had a set back, he stopped focusing on me and not listening. Two days if starting back on keeping his attention he was much better today on his walk. I tried your lesson on stopping him charging out the door. It took 6 tries but I finally got Oscar to sit when I opened the door and let me step out first. You are a terrific trainer, I want to train my dog with love not fear.
I have a year old Schipperke. The breed is notoriously willful and hard to get focused. We’re taking Obedience / Agility classes now and your videos are very helpful. 💪🏼🐺
My daughter and her grandfather arrived home 2 months ago with a 1year old German shepherd-x-rotwheeler. ,(Female). We're not dog people, our youngest daughter is 5 but this dog is growing on us all. Being on a farm she's the Greatest guard dog she very territorial. Any male comes near our house she goes woof woof woof furiously👍 . The dog does listen to us other than when she is nipping the pigs , chasing all cars out the driveway when anyone leaves . Looking forward too showing my daughter your amazing dog training technique's and letting you know how we get on. My daughter gets first dibs too being her boss. After watching your RUclips vids. I'm kinda 🤞🤣😂🤭
I just found your channel looking for exercises for a left about turn. I've watched several of your videos and gotten some great exercises to boost up the fun of my obedience work with my girl. Thanks I look forward to watching everything.
Great! So detailed and with hints that really help with more challenging movements. Best dog training videos out there. When might you be posting some bite work videos? Please don’t stop. I’ve been training dogs for 15 years using luring, markers and leash pressure. Still learned tons. Thank you!
one of the better videos I watched for heel~related tips will deffo use it for my pup as my old dog trainer's "heel" wasn't giving basics for focus~heel that will make sure my pup will ignore distractions as we walk! thank you for that video
Hi I am 19 and I am training a sevice dog bc off your channel. I have bad anxiety and pots with is a disability where a faint so thx for all your videos
thank you so much. recently my service dog is having to be re trained during the holidays due to people at my high school harassing her causing her to be reactive. and even though i’ve only done the first step (we’re taking baby steps) she is already succeeding so well. i cant thank you enough
This is amazingly helpful I can’t wait to start with my dog, we have been working on a focused heel but I didn’t really understand where exactly to start and how to help my dog fully understand the concept. One question though, should we work on step one until he fully masters it, then move on to step two, etc..
You give out truly excellent information! I just wish I had found your channel before I got my pup. He is already doing well after a few sessions of using your methods.
That's awesome, I'm happy to hear that! :) Also, be sure to join my new Facebook group to continue learning how to train your dog with direct support from me and the rest of the community. :) facebook.com/groups/NateSchoemers/
Thank you so much for this excellent video; in 5 minutes, I could see the light bulb come on in my 2 year old lab's head, (and mine as well) and she said, "Oh THATS what you want me to do! " She has been through several obedience classes, but always with a lack of a good heel position (rear end pointing West while the front end was pointing North.) Balance work on a half ball didn't help. Good in agility, but as she is long and boxy, and lacks good hind end awareness, drops bars. The spiraling exercise, AFTER we really worked on engagement, definitely increased her hind end awareness; almost like a miracle. The engagement strengthened her trust in me; after all, it is hard to walk forward (or whatever) without looking forward. (I can only imagine that as a human, but it seems daunting.) That takes a LOT of trust, and that is what these exercises, and your training method, taught. Thank you. I feel more confident, but more importantly, my dog feels more confident. I subscribed. Am looking forward to subscribing to your Patreon.

Thank you so much for all your videos you have changed my life and my dog's life forever I was always good at training my dogs to do tricks but they would only do it if I had a treat in my hand you have taught me so much more thank you thank you thank you
Love the videos. I have a 11wk old healer I got at 8wks after my hero died. Train every day. He knows center and walks with me and to get down when I take a knee and the basic sit, down and come and if I point and say touch he'll bump the object with his nose. I'll have to try this out since now he focuses on my hands every time I move them.
Thanks Mario! I appreciate that! If you can, check out my new Facebook group to continue learning how to train your dog with direct support from me and the rest of the community. :) facebook.com/groups/NateSchoemers/
Ahhhh!!!! I'm watching this for like the 5th time. I see now in part 2, I omitted an important step. I forget to keep breaking things down so I complete each step.
Thank you! I'm happy that you like the training videos. :) Also, be sure to join my new Facebook group to continue learning how to train your dog with direct support from me and the rest of the community. You can also share videos of you and your pup training :) facebook.com/groups/NateSchoemers/
This guy showed up in my recommendations randomly as I recently started researching focused heal. I'm insanely impressed, so detailed, yet so concise. The instructions on this video are simply amazing. Subscriber added on just one view! Cheers!
I love the way each lesson is balanced with explaining and then showing technique, step by step in a straightforward way. I can't wait to get my little staffy pup in two weeks to start the new chapter.
thank you so much for breaking this down step by step! i've been doing basic obedience since i brought my boy home (my first GSD) and want to move on to more focus based training once he's got the basics down. definitely going to be using this to help me train Quixote in the future!
Thanks Nate, loved this video! I noticed when you had Ari in the heel position at first, using food in hand to the side of her face, and waiting for here to look at you - she kept looking back at your hand with the food every time you said “heel.” Does that work out (where the dog doesn’t look at your hand) once you begin the exercise with no food in your hand? 13:03
Thank you for your comment! I’m glad you loved the video! Yes, the behavior of looking at the hand will eventually fade, especially once the reward is no longer in that hand. To help speed up the process, you can reward from the opposite hand or use a secondary terminal marker. A secondary terminal marker is a cue that predicts release plus reward, but the reward is placed away from the handler-such as a treat or toy positioned in a specific spot. This helps the dog focus less on your hand and more on the behavior you’re teaching. For example, once Ari is in the correct heel position and looks at me, I can use the secondary terminal marker to release her to a reward that’s been placed elsewhere. Over time, this creates a stronger focus on the behavior and eye contact rather than on the hand holding the food. Keep practicing, and you’ll see that the focus shifts naturally as you progress. Thanks for watching and engaging with the channel! 😊
THANK YOU! I have been trying to work on heel with my dog for awhile now but other videos were not helping me understand how to properly start the process! This video is amazing
hey Nate I am trying to get a ds here soon and I been watching a lot of videos. I also found out that you and Robert cabral of the two people that give out a lot of free info and i feel like you do this for the love of dogs and not just for money.thank you so much.
Thank you for this!! I’m training my 6month puppy to be a diabetic alert dog (mostly just around the house). He won’t be going in public very much but I would like to have him well enough trained to have the option. He’s very distracted by smells in grass and dogs that bark at him, so I will try this!
I just found your youtube videos and I am a fan!! I love how you break things down and and explain the "why" in depth. One thing I didn't see a video on, that I would like to see covered is .. shorter dogs. I have an English Cocker and want a utility dog.
This is the most in depth, easy to understand, and effective video I have ever seen for focused heel training. I’m trying to train my medical alert SD the basics on my own so I only have to pay for the specialized alert and response training and videos like this help me out so freaking much. What I loved most was seeing the dog's mistakes here and there. It keeps it real!
Thanks, Carmen!

Or maybe it’s someone that sees what a distraction being an animal owner is.
I liked the video but I wish audio was better
@@NateSchoemer trying to get in to and join in Facebook but I don't know what is going on, doesn't do anything yet. Please help.

I love how much you take care of Ari, she really has so much fun while training and I admire that.
Thanks! She's my little superstar! :)

Awesome! Thank you, Rene! :)
Unbelievable video. Got more attention from my pup than I've ever had within 5 minutes of following this. Amazing.
This is a super helpful video in preparing for AKC Novice competition and for just increasing engagement while walking. 💪🏼🐺

Nate Schoemer , a superb video on how to teach a sustained face contact with your dog. Very easy to follow steps. Congratulations

This is EXACTLY what I needed to work on my dogs focus! I have a year old ESS and he is AMAZING - but I struggle with keeping his focus at times.
Love the videos. I have a 11wk old healer I got at 8wks after my hero died. Train every day. thank you so much for breaking this down step by step! i've been doing basic obedience since i brought my boy home (my first GSD) and want to move on to more focus based training once he's got the basics down. definitely going to be using this to help me train Quixote in the future!
I just found your channel. I'm a couple of videos in and enjoying your training. I will be a new dog owner on the 5/28, first time in 43 years.
Another great lesson.

This is free game! I appreciate you Nate ✊🏾
Thanks, Bethany! I'm happy the video was helpful. :)

Thank you for this video I have been trying to find GOOD videos for training my pup. ❤❤❤
Awesome! Thank you for watching and I'm happy the video was helpful. :)
I just found this video, started not even one minute, and I already love you. I can't wait to learn everything you have to offer to teach!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks! The training process is the same with shorter dogs, you just have to bend down more. Lol!
@@NateSchoemerlol, it' s a good thing I'm short, but sometimes I feel like I'm standing on my head. lol!
