This is one of the best channel on dog training and grooming. You techniques are spot on. Great job buddy. Cheers
Wow, thank you! I appreciate that! :)
My hundred-and-ten-day-old Shepsky (German Shepard and Husky) is a terror! Biting, barking, chewing, and jumping is the way she rolls. When I took her to puppy training class they sequestered us in a corner (both of us wearing dunce caps) and placed a curtain around us so she wouldn't disrupt the other dogs (and clients). I'm a librarian and a professional when it comes to finding information. The conclusion of my intensive research is: YOU ARE THE BEST. CLEAR, CONCISE, AND INFORMATIVE. Thank you.
Thanks for doing these videos. Helps me so much.
Great tips very helpful.
I love how genuinely happy pleased Nate is when they do it correct. So do the dogs and that's the real trick to it.
Thanks! :)
I love watching your training videos. Thank you so much.
Awesome! I'm happy you like them. Thanks for watching. :)
You are the best no doubt. I appreciate you. Your videos go into so much detail yet so understandable. You make it easy for us to learn which in turn makes it easy for our dogs to learn.
thank you so much!! I needed this!
Awesome! I'm happy it helped! :)
Makes total sense the way you train and explain. Thank you
Thank you, Stephen! Cheers!
Goodness thank you so much for this vedio this helps me so much !!!
Your vedio is exactly what I needed!

Bro thank u for your vida they are so dang helpful God bless
Between your help, and the help of my personal friend (Marine K-9 handler and police dog trainer of 12 years) I’ve absolutely turned my GSD around!
Awesome! :)
Thanks great video
Your videos are the best! I have my German Shepherd in a puppy training class but it is no where near what I am learning from you! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!
Love this video. Thanks, I have some more fun training to practice!
Awesome! :)
Love these training videos and using them with my dog
Awesome and thank you! :)
Thank you
Thanks man. You saved my life with puppy training 2 years ago. I got complacent and now I'm going back over everything again. Had some off leash issues off collar issue which I haven't had before but I'm working it out. Stay on the ball.
Wow Harley has come a long way! She's beautiful 🥺 great job Nate!
Thanks! She's a good pup!

Brilliant training. Best on RUclips bye far 👍

Awesome watching you work with Arih! Needed this video! Gotta watch your flip finish. Having a hard time teaching my GSD pup. My boy's colouring is identical to Harley. Love from 🇨🇦!

very good training. love watching the video.
Thanks Torio Michael! :)
That's super cool! I'll work with mine more on this. I think she and I will both like it. It'll be super useful to have this solidified better, too.
Yay! Thanks, I appreciate that and I'm sure your dog will enjoy this training as well! :)
Incredible
Thank you! :)
Thanks bro great video
Thanks, I appreciate that!
♥️♥️ The best ever
Again and again your videos show that training is fun for both owner and dog. My wife has MS so walking our Newfie would be impossible without good training. What Nate is doing for us is training our happy dog and making it a joy for us.
Thanks, Ron! Yes, dog training should be fun and all about working together with your dog towards a common goal. I'm happy the videos have been so helpful. :)
This looks like such a fun game to do with my dog ❤
Yes, I'm sure you're dog will enjoy the training. :)
Totally got it tonight..the sit has been easy for us..the heel a bit harder I can see why.."yes" then reward..lots of little steps..Thank you so much ..again🤗

Awesome bro
Thanks Rahul V .J, I really appreciate that! :)
I love this video. I am amazed at the difference I'm seeing in my little spaniel after watching just a few of your videos where you break down YOUR movements to get the dog where they need to be. This stuff works!! Though, power steering on a 26lb ECS is harder to pull off than power steering with the dogs whose nose comes up so much higher lol! I'm short and all but ... well, challenge accepted!
That is awesome! Thanks for sharing and I'm happy the videos are helping! :)
Simply amazing, the achievements my 2 yo pointer has made with your videos are spectacular, haha the markers are pure brain manipulations! I commited the mistake of teaching her the command stay, as she used to follow me when I moved, I will try not to use it anymore. Also when I am in the field she just got mad going around chasing birds and smelling everything, like a possessed, not even want the traits, guess I will have to repeat repeat and repeat. Thanks again for your videos.
My pleasure. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel. Cheers!
Nice!
Thanks! :)
Thanks
Thank you! :)
So good! Love this. My one question is how to get them to stay in the heel position for a duration, and eventually for even like a 30-45 minute structured walk? Love your videos and love Arih 💗
Thanks! This is more for a competitive focused heel. For a structured walk, check out this video: ruclips.net/video/E7ztsl09dOI/видео.html
Learning more by watching your videos and your techniques are very effective with my dogs. Can you make a video on how to walk two overly excited dogs? I have 2 dogs that get overly excited when i put their leashes on, it's like they want to play rather than to walk. Everytime i try walking them together, their leashes get entangled. Please make a video about that topic, would be a great help for me. More power to your channel and thank you for sharing your expertise! Subscriber from The Philippines! 🇵🇭
This video was helpful in more than a few ways.
Watching Arih and Harley go center when given other commands makes me feel a lot less alone.
We've been working on just staying still for longer periods.
Down can lead to sit fast because she's predicting the next move.
And everything leads to center if she doesn't remember the command said
Yes. I like to show mistakes in my videos, because I want people to know that I'm not perfect and we all can make mistakes. The idea is that a mistake won't ruin the dogs training. Laugh, have fun with it and try again! :)
@@NateSchoemer totally agree
Shows one can have great fun with our canine companion.. I was actually going to make a comment to this effect that I'm glad u did not erase the oopsies.. then when we make ooopsies that we are on track.
Love these videos, I'm having trouble with the "free" command in this video. We are training a new shepherd right now and I've only ever used a release for a couple select behaviors, is it better if I have the release for every behavior?
Awesome I need to teach my gsd
I'm sure you and your dog will have a lot of fun with this exercise. Cheers!
I have truly enjoyed your training videos and appreciate that you have shared so much for free! I do have one question, Malinois are notoriously intelligent, high energy but easy to train with the proper technique. I have a herding dog, Bouvier des Flandres and they are known to be smart and head strong; do you have any videos with a dog that is not a Malinois or Shepherd?
I wanna see a Harley full training movie from beginning to end ❤
Not even a single cut all along the video...also very Informative👌🏻
Thanks, Akarsh! :)
always so pleased with your content, the focus your dog has on you is simply perfect. Do you have a video on learning the heel command while walking on a leash? if not what are your tips on that? my dog learns the heel command only when im at home off leash and have a treat guiding her spin into a heel... but id like for her to come into a heel when we're walking on leash for example?
Thanks! It would depend on if you want a focused heel or just loose leash walking while on the leash. If you just want loose leash walking, then check out this video: ruclips.net/video/E7ztsl09dOI/видео.html If you want it to still be a focused heel, then follow the process explained in this article: www.nateschoemer.com/post/how-to-properly-socializing-your-dog
@@NateSchoemer thanks a lot for the response and the help. Will check those out!
Great work thank you 😊🙏🏼
What kind of snacks you give the dog during the training?
Thanks! I use Vital Essentials and Stella and Chewy's freeze-dried coated kibble. If you want to see most of the products that I use with my dogs, including treats and food. Check out this page on my website. www.nateschoemer.com/store
Will you do a video on building drive? My dog is very slow listening to commands, and I know a major part of that is because of my energy (and frustration) levels so it’s not terribly fun. My hope is that I can work on motivation so both of us want to train more.
Yes, I'll add a video on drive building on my list of future videos to make. :) Thanks for the suggestion!
I am a huge fan of your channel. I learn so much watching your video. I try to recommend your videos to people on Reddit but somehow my post is removed. Any way thank you so much. Happy Holidays
Thanks for that! I appreciate it. :)
Great video possible new subscriber here. Depends on if Ruby and I get some love in return. I love that you use verbal markers. Verbal markers are superior to those annoying clickers. I do a lot of spur of the moment behavior capture and clickers are useless with that. Plus with verbal markers you can add or remove energy.
Thanks! I really appreciate that! You have a new subscriber as well! :)
@@NateSchoemer thanks since you have shown love in return I have even hit the bell. By the way Ruby and I have a challenge for you. We are challenging other dog teachers to try our lip syncing challenge. Video trickery does not count :)
What is the significance of the raised mat? Do I lose anything if I train without one? We train in a public park.
❣️❣️❣️
Thanks, T B! :)
I use “yes” as a terminal, and “good” as a durational / “in-place” marker. Is this the equivalent to your “free” & “yes” ? Thanks, big fan of your videos.
Hi, Tommy! Yes, you are correct. I know a lot of trainers that use the same words for their markers that you use for yours. Your "Good" is my "Yes", and your "Yes" is my "Free". Thanks for supporting the channel, I really appreciate it! 😁🙏🐶🐕
Greetings...I hope you don't mind myself using your Christian/first name? But this video is very good, this will help myself 100%. Thank you Nate. Tremendous knowledge.
What do you use for treats? I am going to start with your videos for my 8 week old German I'm training for a service dog. Thanks I love your content seriously (I'm just gonna do all commands in German)
Awesome! I'm happy the video is helping! I use these treats in my videos: amzn.to/2W88zMf
Ari is a super dog...can you use a more difficult dog for us mere mortals? 🤣🤣
Lol! Thanks! Yes, I'll be having more dogs in my videos. :)
@@NateSchoemer I enjoyed watching Harley meander over. More like my dog's speed, though she knows her heel position
Hi Nate, really appreciate your videos and training style, its great! Just wanted to ask, im coming to some of this training late (14 weeks), my dog is v food driven and knows 'yes' as the marker for doing the action right, have not set a terminal marker / continuation marker specifically and she sees yes as either/or - how do i correct her if she breaks a command after i say yes - do i just guide her back to it and make her stay and wait before giving the treat? for example on a sit as i walk away. Thanks in advance!
Hey Thomas! Thanks for reaching out and for supporting the channel. I would suggest teaching both markers, this will help distinguish what you want the "yes" to mean to your dog. Then check out my stay video. this will show you how to reinforce the continuation marker. I hope this helps! :) ruclips.net/video/UkZ7ucpK9sc/видео.html ruclips.net/video/s5iD8eN89bo/видео.html
@@NateSchoemer Thank you for the time you took to reply! And thanks again for all the training help
What are the merits of teaching heel to the left side? I’ve taught my Rottweiler to mainly heel to the right as I’m right handed and if/when he has a red moment I’ve got control with my stronger arm because it can be like trying to wrestle a gorilla 😮
My dutchie is very "signal- sensitive".. i do not know what it is called in english - but i hope you get what i mean.. she is very sensitive to touch, being watched/stared at with a "sharp" look , .. she is not nervous but quite submissive :( not to happy about that but we are workig on it.. Any idea how i can make the focus part a bit softer so she can enjoy it?
Great video also my dog knows sit and sometimes down with hand signals but he is slow at it I would like him to be able to sit and down fast on command not from a hand signal any advice
Make sure you say the verbal command before the hand signal and use the terminal marker more in the training. Also, dogs will often mimic our movements, so if you perform the hand signals with a little more speed, you dog may match your speed. I hope this helps and thanks for the comment/question. :)
@@NateSchoemer thanks
This is an old video but I wanted to ask:
Can you get this amount of body awareness with a big "floppy" dog like a German Shepherd?
I see malinois doing flip finishes and racing around all stiff-bodied and it looks awesome, but I can never get that level of strength from my German Shepherd.
Is it even possible?
EDIT:
just realised you did it with Harley too 😁
What words do you use for each command? Like the front, backwards, and side positions ect.
For the sit-front, I use my recall command, "Come." The side position is "heel." For the center position, I use the command, "Center." For backward, I usually say "Back." However, keep in mind that you can use whatever words you like.
Could you show options on lengthening time in the standing heel? Like maybe a 30 sec stand stay. Dogs like to use almost a default to sit. I need more stand heel and for durations.
Hi Jannell, Thanks for the question and for supporting the channel. Yes, This video is on my list of future videos to make, it will be titled "How to teach a service dog counter support and counter balance" . You can see the list here: www.nateschoemer.com/future-videos In the meantime, you can use the same concept used in this stay command video: ruclips.net/video/s5iD8eN89bo/видео.html
@@NateSchoemer Thank you. I am a Puppy Raiser and work with guide dogs in training. I always like options. Thank you again!
I see you reply a lot hopefully you see this lol
Im looking for a shepherd and really want the full tan body with a dark mask that I see here, What exactly is your breed of dog in this video? Is it German shepherd with the golden shepherd coat? Or a mixed breed?
Does it matter which side is the primary heel and walk side for competition? I notice almost all handlers have their dogs on the left side. I prefer the right side.
I think most sports require the left side. Whichever sport you are interested in, just check out the rules first, so you know which direction you need to take the training. Cheers!
@@NateSchoemer 😁 I'm thinking that me and Atlas walk on the right side of the road so I put Atlas on my right to keep him out of traffic, same as I was taught to do with a female human. Has nothing to do with sports. 🤣
Getting a pocket bully he will be ready in 3 weeks I'm wondering are they good with this sort of obedience training
It depends on a lot on the individual dog, but yes. If you put in the work, you can do this type of training with your dog. :)
New subs here
Awesome, thank you!
I really like your videos and how they are designed to teach from start to finish. Just an observation, at 12:25 when you were demonstrating your dog moving to the heel position, you stepped back with your left leg and your dog kept moving with you. Your dog is trained to cue off the movement of your left leg when it comes to a non verbal cue movement so wouldn't you want to step back with your right leg in that situation? Not trying to be a sharpshooter here, just making a training point. Thanks!!
Lol! Great observation and yes, I actually taught her to do that with a training technique called, "follow the left leg exercise". Stepping back with the right leg would have made it easier for her. Cheers! :)
@@NateSchoemer Thanks!! Keep up the great work!!
My GSD is 5 month and he started to pull and bark on the leash when there are other dogs. Can you give me any tips for it?
Yes, send me an email and I'll walk you through the steps. Thanks! NateSchoemer@gmail.com
Omg same! I need tips.
6:45 Ha.
Lol! Arih makes me laugh everyday! :)
Hi Nate I just got a german shepherd puppy 2 months ago and I am loving your videos they are really helpful!! Just a few question I am hoping you could help me with please. Btw the gs is 19 weeks old and is a female.
Question 1.) I live in the country but my actual back yard isn't huge but there are loads of fields around me, I have been starting to play fetch and practising sits, stays etc in my local park on a 30-metre line, but now the restriction due to covid are back, I can't go there anymore. As I mentioned the fields around me are big enough however they occasionally have livestock eg cows and sheep in them, is it ok to train/play with her in these fields or would this encourage her to go there in the future when she is allowed to be off the lease by herself for example go rouge or chase sheep?
Q2.) Since I have started watching ur videos I want to change a few of my commands for example, my terminal command is ”ok” and I would like to change it to ”free” also my ”drop it” command to ”out” also some of my hand gestures to yours, is it too late after 2 months training to change these?
Q3.) My puppy is currently teething and is finding it hard to digest here food/treats and it is starting to affect her training as she stops mid training and chews for well ever lol and I don't want to use to much cheese in case she turns into a gigantic hamster/mouse that and it gives her diarrhoea if she has to much. Any suggestion to what treats to give her during this period?
Q4 - Last one). I want to be able and have started to train a focused heel(shes not conditioned yet though to it) the one when she looks at tour face and is in tight, but when i want to go on a long walk it obviously doesn’t make sense to ask her to do this however, i would like her to walk in say a ”relaxed heel” lol just by my side not ahead, and then also as she isn't ready to go off lead I have been letting her on a longer lead 6 meter (I have and extendable lead that goes either 4 or 6 meters) or so and have been giving her a bit more freedom / space to go discover a little on the 6 meter on her harness then I change the lead from harness to collar when walking passed people/dogs/ or on the side of the road and have been saying ”walk nice” so my question is is there some command I should teach her to do a ”relaxed heel”or how should it be done differently or I am doing it wrong?
Thank you so so much, Nate, and keep up the great work!
Thanks!
1) It should be okay as long as you continue to train your dog and develop reliability with all the commands.
2) You can change the name of a command at any time. It shouldn't be an issue.
3) I like to use freeze dried dog food. With a puppy or a new dog in training, I will often start with a high-quality dry food (I like stella and chewy freeze dried coated kibble) during the training process. I also usually give the puppy raw goat milk from answers, to help ensure the dog is getting enough quality nutrition. If I don't have enough time for a training session, then I soak the kibble in water or raw goat milk and stuff it into a kong or raw bone, then freeze it. In addition, I train with freeze-dried dog food, but that can be very pricey. amzn.to/2W88zMf Usually, a high-quality kibble will be okay. I transition them to raw when all the main training is completed and then use the freeze dried dog food while training.
4) Just use a different command for your loose leash walking. For Arih I use "heel" for her focused heel and "with me" for her loose leash walking. ruclips.net/video/E7ztsl09dOI/видео.html
I hope this helps and thanks for supporting the channel.
Nate Schoemer I am literally watching one of your videos at the moment as you replied to this lol, I am loving your videos so much, definitely the best dog training channel out on RUclips!!! Thanks again for all your help on my puppy training journey you my friend are a legend! Also, Is there somewhere people like me can donate to help these great videos coming?
Does it matter which side we do the heel position? I am right handed so was wondering if for anything it would matter which side?
Either side is fine. :)
What type of dog is the first dog (he trains her in the second half of the video though) . Tan with black hair on its back. My dog looks exactly like that, but I’m not sure exactly what type she is. I think she’s eastern german Shepard but I haven’t been able to find a dog with that same color pattern
The resemblance is actually crazy
I’m gonna teach heel to my puppy but before is it needed to teach sit or whatever ???
No, but I like to add commands such as sit, down, stand, and spin while working on heel. :)
What treats do you use please?
You can see most of the products that I use here, including food and treats: www.nateschoemer.com/store
Should I use the "heel" command only to bring my dog into the position or also to let her know to go close by my side when we're walking together?
I use the heel command as a position. The position next to me and when I walk, my dog must walk with me in order to maintain the heel position. Lastly, when I stop moving I want my dog to sit next to me in heel position. I hope that makes sense and thanks for the question! :)
@@NateSchoemer thanks very much for the explanation!
I use 2 different commands. One for stationary heal position and one for walking next to me. Call me crazy. And I'm no expert. But my dog responded better to having 2 separate commands.
I have a one year old border collie, I've never used conditioners like you, I usually just say "very good" or "good girl" stuff like that, yet she still does listen to me when I ask her to sit o go to her "place"... At this point in her life where I've already "conditioned" her in a wrong manner, is it still possible to start from 0 with your method? Or must i try something else due to her mind not being fresh and/or her somewhat advanced age ?
A dog can still learn without marker, but it does help make it more clear for our dogs. Even if your dog has already had training, you can still implement all the techniques in my training videos. :)
Nate Schoemer my dog is not food driven is there another way to do this is just not like your dog food driven thank you
Yes, you can use leash pressure instead. Check out this video on leash pressure work first: ruclips.net/video/9L8tK7mSD10/видео.html
Can I use the clicker instead of a marker word? I prefer it, because the sound is always the same and there is no emotion in it.
Most definitely! :)
@@NateSchoemer There are lots of dog trainers who upload their videos on RUclips. But Nate, you're definitely the best!
Thank you, I really appreciate that! :)
My golden is 5 month old most of the time she get distracted. Sometimes she plays like don't want to listen.
I love your videos
What I am doing wrong?
Thanks, I appreciate that. You can try training in an environment that is less distracting! :)
Just asking ... what food are you giving her?the dog..? please
Freeze dried dog food from vital essentials, and keto dog food from visionary pet. :)
Could you show how to heel while you r sitting in a wheelchair
Yes, I've added that to my list of future videos to make. :) thanks!
Haha funny.
But my dog doesn't really care about food or treats, so what can I use as a reward?
All dogs are food motivated. Often dogs will seem like they are not food motivated if they are always fed out of a bowl or they are free fed. When you make them work for the food, the food drive will naturally go it. In addition, you can use toys or petting as a primary reinforcer. Hope this helps! :)
