I've been training my first dog almost exclusively with Nate's methods. Puppy is 7 months old now and whenever we go to a situation where she has to show what she knows people are often baffled how good she is for her age. Your (or whoever tought of it) marker training is amazing. I see a lot of people doing it but I rarely notice them or even proffesional trainers use both the continuation AND the terminal marker. This one thing (or you could say 2 things..) has made our training much easier once I understood the concept fully. It's impressive how a dog can easily tell the difference between the markers... Also not having to use the STAY command and automatically overlap commands is a relief both to me and to my gsd. Once again, great method, solves a lot of problems (like speed, in this video), so thank you. Ma dog Ekko and I salute you, keep it up!
As a first time dog owner with a 4 month T-Rex, errrr, German Shepard (male), I find your videos and training methods invaluable. This particular one is interesting for many reasons. First, we get to see how Harley has progressed…and grown! It’s a great reference for my own GSD. Second, having you comment while watching your own training video was quite helpful. Stopping the action and breaking down the steps, even pointing out your missteps, provides time to process the training. Finally, for me, speed is the key. Whether it is because I am still in the puppy stage or my dog is more easily distracted, trying to ramp up the speed and variety of commands has drastically increased the attention factor. Thanks!!!
Teaching a dog new behaviours is like teaching martial arts to new students. You teach one action, then another and go back to the first action and eventually weave in the 2nd, 3rd etc, so the dog / student eventually starts to see the big picture of how it all fits/flows together. All this while perfecting each individual action/behaviour with each training session.

Nicely opened up the training video. I'd like to see a video on confidence building. You mention some in several different videos, but one video on especially those would be nice.
Thanks! I'll add that to my list. In the meantime, here's a small section from my manual: An easy way to look at confidence-building is to take something that the dog may be unsure about and make it predict something pleasant instead. For example: Let’s say you want to get your dog comfortable with different sounds, so you fill an empty kiddie pool with empty plastic bottles for the puppy / dog to play with. At first, the puppy or dog may be hesitant about the situation, but if you show the puppy or dog that it’s fun by either getting in the pool first or luring the puppy or dog into the pool, they will soon discover that it’s a fun activity and the puppy or dog will associate the sound of the plastic bottles with fun (this is something a lot of protection dog trainers will do with their puppies because some protection sports, they will use what’s called a bottle curtain, which is basically a bunch of empty plastic bottles hanging from a pole in a curtain-like fashion that the dog will have to run through.) Simply put, it’s about constantly exposing your dog to new things and making those activities pleasant by predicting something the dog enjoys. Below are some confidence building exercises that I like to do with puppies and dogs that I work with. • Having the dog walk on multiple surfaces while giving the dog treats. An example could be having the dog walk on bubble wrap or a gym floor. • Having the dog walk on elevated surfaces while providing rewards. Making sure the dog won’t fall and get hurt, which could have the opposite effect. • Playing tug and always allowing the dog to win. If I want the toy from the dog, I always use the “drop it” command. I never physically take the toy away by ripping it from the dog. 90 • Exposing the dog to different sounds while providing rewards. Starting at a low volume and increasing as the dog becomes more comfortable. • Taking the dog to different environments for training. This is part of socialization. • Create a puppy or dog obstacle course. These are just a few examples, but you can see how the process works. Try being creative when doing confidence building exercises with your dog.

So what I've learned from this is................ I'm WAY too static with my own body... I have a deaf girl so a majority of training videos I can ignore, it's all about the body language with us, so really appreciate this video! Hi Nate By 18 month old Belgian malinois knows eg platz..(down). Etc- think he actually knows my visual aids more than the commands etc..I definitely dont have the speed that u have.. can I go back with food treating like u have just shown? When i give the spin arm lure action - he does it but at the same time he wants to bite (not a real.bit.as such) my hand. Not sure if I'm doing the luring position too high?. I see your BM " comfort position" is also the "bridge"_(between ones legs.🤣). I think I taught that too well..lol
Great questions and yes, you can go back in training to reteach your dog to perform the behaviors with more speed. If you are doing a physical cue too quickly and your dog is play biting at your hand, then go back to delivering the physical cue slowly and then gradually increase the speed of the physical cue. When you move very quickly, sometimes that can kick in a dog's play and prey drive. My Malinois will also do that on occasion. lol!
@@NateSchoemer he does it when I go slowly as well. In fact.he then takes my forearm lol. I have managed to.get him to platz quicker by my body (and the ball luncher) going lower quicker.. He is doing the front/ heel/ round me to heel (you called it something else.. ?.. he's doing that very nicely.. so ..thanks so much for that " how To"..- definetely was due to left foot back them left foot to the front and Sharp lure towards ones body again.. I was always battling with getting the front alignment done right. Thanks for all ur help.

Hey, Danny! Yes, you can use the techniques in this video to speed up your pups commands. In addition, you can always go back a step in training if you feel you need to fix something. :)
What kinda treats do you like to use. Ever since I’ve been training my pupp all she wants to eat is treats and hardly eats her regular food. What do you recommend I do? And also thanks for all the video bro 🤙 very helpful.
Thanks! With a puppy, I will often start with a high-quality dry food during the training process. I also usually give the puppy raw goat milk from answers, to help ensure the dog is getting enough quality nutrition. If I don't have enough time for a training session, then I soak the kibble in water or raw goat milk and stuff it into a kong or raw bone, then freeze it. In addition, I train with freeze-dried dog food, but that can be very pricey. amzn.to/2W88zMf Usually, a high-quality kibble will be okay. I transition them to raw when all the main training is completed.

Also, If you start paying your dog with really high-value food, that's like increasing the dog's paygrade. When to name the commands, after of a few weeks of training ? My 4 months old German Shepherd, he learned sit, and I trained him down. Now he forgot sit, I commanded him sit he will go down only now. Thanks for the vids.
Hi Ken! I start to name the command when the dog can perform the behavior the way that I like with the physical cue. If your dog starts to perform it on just the verbal, but later seems to forget the verbal, just go back to help the dog with the physical cue until the dog is again doing it on the verbal command only. Is there a playlist with all Harley videos? My GSD is 17 weeks and I can’t get him to bring me toys or anything. I can’t get him to stop biting me and I can’t get him to heel unless he’s on leash. I want him to be my service dog. I really need help.
Nate, quick question. I'm trying to shape up retrieval. Early on, how do you get them to carry it back into heel? I was rewarding her too soon, now she thinks the task is over and if I don't take it and try to guide her into heel, she'll drop it. How can I lead her to better success?
Also, how do I teach her to stay far enough away when we are home. She's under foot. Not a lot, but enough to worry a little. I almost tripped over her today. I was moving and changed my mind about where I needed to go and she was right behind me.
Hey Kevin! First try to make sure that you can get your dog to carry the item around without dropping it too much. Also, if your dog drops it early, just help her pick it back up and make sure she doesn't drop it until you grab it. Sometimes I'll just touch the item without taking it. This way it'll teach the dog that I'm not always going to take it when I touch it. Usually this will help prevent them from dropping it when your hand touches it. Once I know I can get the dog to hold it for a little while, then I ask them to bring it into the heel. However, they must know how to get into the heel position without the item first. I hope this helps and thanks again for another excellent question! :)
If you need her to keep some distance, just give her a command. For example; I will place my dog into room commands or climb commands. A room command is a room or location of the house that they must stay in. I treat it as any other stay command.
Please make a video on how to train a toy poodle! I have a 2.5yo toy poodle and while she is the sweetest girl ever she's hard to train, she's a picky eater so I need HIGH value treats and even then she's so happy and excited she still struggles with sit! She's great with strangers and dogs but like I said idk how to train her high energy azz!! I have a 10yo gs who I did personal protection with he was easy to train plus i had free trainer while i was in the army. My 10 week old gs I got 2 weeks ago, she has been extremely easy to train especially after I watch literally EVERY SINGLE one of your videos and most of American standards vids! She sits, she stays, heels, started scent training for search and rescue! I love how smart the gs breed is, but I'm definitely getting a malinois next due to size and cause I'm learning that my 10yo gs isn't the only gs that non stop talks!!!!
is this something i can expect from a 6 month old puppy or is that asking too much? You said it takes 6 to 9 months for something like this. He knows his commands but he's often slow responding to them and slow executing them. Did I already make a mistake training? I'm not sure if that's supposed to be normal for his age/training level or if I should expect more. My first dog and my first time training any pet. The dog is a german shepherd (with collie mix, we think).
Hi Ken! When I said 6 - 9 months, I meant to form a habit. It doesn't take that long to teach a behavior. If you feel the commands are slower than you would like, then go back in training. I would go back to the luring step and I would reteach the commands to increase the speed. However, not all dogs will perform as fast as others. For example; Harley will probably never be as fast as Arih, since genetics play a very large roll as well. I hope this helps and thanks for supporting the channel!
I would do drive building. I want to make sure the dog really likes the toy, before I use it as a reward. You can see an example of this in my "how to bark on command" video. :)
Does “free” mean released to get food from you and “break” mean released to the environment? Did you say break after free, because she didnt move out of position after the free? Do you have situations where dog definitely knows the release word, but also knows, you’re just going to ask them to get back in position (lower drive dogs)?

I am trying to teach my Belgium commands but every time I see a video on RUclips on anyone who is trying to teach us commands these dogs are already trained I would like to see a dog that's not trained yet to see how long it takes to learn the commands or to see how frustrating it is
Hi Barbara, I would recommend going through my basic obedience series. In that series I demonstrate on different dogs each with a different level of training experience. I'm a huge fan of his, so I'm sure you've had a great start to your dog training career. The only services that I offer are facetime/zoom training and private lessons. When you say free to the dog.. What state does that put them into? Does it make it so they kind of are free until the next command?

How do I build food drive with lower value food?
Hi Dakota&Blessing ServiceTeam! :) You can usually increase a dog's food drive by making them work for every bite of food. Also, If you start paying your dog with really high-value food, that's like increasing the dog's paygrade. It can make it much harder to get the dog to work for a lower value food again because it's like giving the dog a demotion. Thanks again for another great question and for supporting my channel. :)

When to name the commands, after of a few weeks of training ? My 4 months old German Shepherd, he learned sit, and I trained him down. Now he forgot sit, I commanded him sit he will go down only now. Thanks for the vids.
Hi Ken! I start to name the command when the dog can perform the behavior the way that I like with the physical cue. If your dog starts to perform it on just the verbal, but later seems to forget the verbal, just go back to help the dog with the physical cue until the dog is again doing it on the verbal command only. I was rewarding her too soon, now she thinks the task is over and if I don't take it and try to guide her into heel, she'll drop it.
How can I lead her to better success?
Also, how do I teach her to stay far enough away when we are home. She's under foot. Not a lot, but enough to worry a little. I almost tripped over her today. I was moving and changed my mind about where I needed to go and she was right behind me.
Hey Kevin! First try to make sure that you can get your dog to carry the item around without dropping it too much. Also, if your dog drops it early, just help her pick it back up and make sure she doesn't drop it until you grab it. Sometimes I'll just touch the item without taking it. This way it'll teach the dog that I'm not always going to take it when I touch it. Usually this will help prevent them from dropping it when your hand touches it. Once I know I can get the dog to hold it for a little while, then I ask them to bring it into the heel. However, they must know how to get into the heel position without the item first. I hope this helps and thanks again for another excellent question! :)
If you need her to keep some distance, just give her a command. For example; I will place my dog into room commands or climb commands. A room command is a room or location of the house that they must stay in. I treat it as any other stay command.
Please make a video on how to train a toy poodle! I have a 2.5yo toy poodle and while she is the sweetest girl ever she's hard to train, she's a picky eater so I need HIGH value treats and even then she's so happy and excited she still struggles with sit! She's great with strangers and dogs but like I said idk how to train her high energy azz!! I have a 10yo gs who I did personal protection with he was easy to train plus i had free trainer while i was in the army. My 10 week old gs I got 2 weeks ago, she has been extremely easy to train especially after I watch literally EVERY SINGLE one of your videos and most of American standards vids! She sits, she stays, heels, started scent training for search and rescue! I love how smart the gs breed is, but I'm definitely getting a malinois next due to size and cause I'm learning that my 10yo gs isn't the only gs that non stop talks!!!!

is this something i can expect from a 6 month old puppy or is that asking too much? You said it takes 6 to 9 months for something like this. He knows his commands but he's often slow responding to them and slow executing them. Did I already make a mistake training? I'm not sure if that's supposed to be normal for his age/training level or if I should expect more. My first dog and my first time training any pet. The dog is a german shepherd (with collie mix, we think).
Hi Ken! When I said 6 - 9 months, I meant to form a habit. It doesn't take that long to teach a behavior. If you feel the commands are slower than you would like, then go back in training. I would go back to the luring step and I would reteach the commands to increase the speed. However, not all dogs will perform as fast as others. For example; Harley will probably never be as fast as Arih, since genetics play a very large roll as well. I hope this helps and thanks for supporting the channel!

I would do drive building. I want to make sure the dog really likes the toy, before I use it as a reward. You can see an example of this in my "how to bark on command" video. :)
Does “free” mean released to get food from you and “break” mean released to the environment? Did you say break after free, because she didnt move out of position after the free? Do you have situations where dog definitely knows the release word, but also knows, you’re just going to ask them to get back in position (lower drive dogs)?

I am trying to teach my Belgium commands but every time I see a video on RUclips on anyone who is trying to teach us commands these dogs are already trained I would like to see a dog that's not trained yet to see how long it takes to learn the commands or to see how frustrating it is
Hi Barbara, I would recommend going through my basic obedience series. In that series I demonstrate on different dogs each with a different level of training experience. Also, once we are no longer on quarantine I'll have a larger variety of dogs in my videos again. Thanks for the comment and for supporting the channel. :)
