Also the best but about that is it teaches your dog proper bite inhibition. So if ever a child accidentally stands on their tail, or someone falls over them etc (you know a situation in which it's perfectly natural for a dog to nip since they've just been hurt) they actually understand their own jaw strength and won't sink teeth in.

What do you do when NOTHING works? I have a 13 week old GSD and I’ve tried every suggestion from every one of your videos and nothing whatsoever is working. Yelping/saying ouch is making it worse and she’s biting harder, ignoring and moving away to stop play/engagement (even into another room or behind a gate) is just making her chase after us and bite more/harder, replacing with a toy works for .5 seconds and she goes right back to biting, the hold of the collar and tuck under the arm to calm, takes her 5+ minutes to calm and then as soon as she relaxes (lies down and yawns or sighs), she goes right back to biting and we have to do it again and again to the point we can’t engage in active play with her because she immediately gets too excited, etc etc. we always reward correct behaviour with treats, but she’s SO smart that when the treats come out she’s a perfect angel that doesn’t bite us at all, but as soon as they’re out of sight she’s back to biting us. She’s getting at least 18 hours of sleep a day, she goes on two walks a day and has lots of play with us (as much as she can with her biting), she has lick mats, snuffle mats, puzzles, SO many different kinds of toys, etc. we’re honestly at our wits end. She’s starting training on Tuesday and we’ve already asked her trainer but she had many of the same suggestions you had. You have lots of great ideas, we’re just not sure what to try next. Any ideas are appreciated! ❤️
Here is what I do. I got some good leather gloves and use those for playing. When you do not have to worry about getting hurt, it will be easier to first relax about it. Then just work on respect and only allow play, when you want it.

I have invested so much time and money like you and not much seems to work for long. I'm correcting my mistakes as I learn more and more. All info is helpful 😊
Have you tried telling her not to? I just made the same noise their mother does when correcting a pup, works instantly. And do a LOT less with her, she’s overstimulated and you will have many more issues if you continue. Leave her to just be. She’s way too young to be doing all that, just work on her being calm and relaxed and have impulse control. Basic polite behaviour. GSD ramp up very easily. She’s stressed and biting is self soothing. All that playing and messing around is why she’s doing it.
Have you trjed enforced crate naps? Puppies get bitey and nip a lot more when they're tired but they can't self regulate well yet, so it helps to make them sleep and settle for a while.
Clamp their snouts shut untill they whimper and hold them tight to keep them from twisting around like a an alligator and they will calm down. Then immediately start to pet them and say calming things. So they know it’s well received to be nice and calm , the snout thing is to keep them from biting you and also to teach not to bite period . This has worked with our Rottweiler anyways

most positive reinforcement trainers set the dog up for success by taking extremely small steps that they know the dogs won’t fail and gradually increase the difficulty but not until they’ve already mastered the previous step. this might make it look like the dog is already trained, but really they’re just not putting them into a situation where they’ll be able to rehearse undesirable behaviors. i can’t speak for this specific trainer but i’ve heard other trainers say this.

I wish that I would’ve watched these videos before I got my Rottweiler puppy. She’s approaching 10 weeks and growing fast and she has a lot of bad habits already. Even though she seems really smart I’m learning to give bits of kibble to get her to listen. She has a lot of energy And doesn’t listen so I have a trainer that’s going to help and I’m going to do Petsmart puppy classes and then intermediate. She is growing 2 pounds a week and I have plate and screws in my neck so bending down to her to correct her is killing me so I’m learning a lot. Thank you so much.💚💚
Our dachshund puppy only really likes to nip or "bite" when it's play time. We can play with her feet and ears all we want at 3-4 months old. She's definitely starting to learn the tone of voice and settle. When it comes to toys, we've taught her to release the toy when we want and sit. Usually I'll praise and toss the toy for a game of fetch if she listens. I've been weening off treats slowly and it seems to have been having a positive effect so far. I'm pretty impressed with how well behaved she is for 4 months old. Your tips have been helpful and I'm grateful for the tools you and your channel have provided.
You are great to learn from. My household recently got 2 male Pug puppies now they are 10 weeks old. One is a big chubby boy the other was the runt of the litter and is still so tiny but healthy. His larger brother bites and pulls his small brother's ears making him cry and squeal in pain. Except to pick up and comfort the small one, and because the biter is also a puppy, the family has been grabbing a toy for the biter instead of correcting him. The family will all be watching this video tonight.

What if this doesn't work? I have a 3mo old german shepard land shark. Anchoring the collar like that doesnt work, he gets really upset and starts aggressively barking and growling. Redirecting doesnt work, he will drop the toy to eat me... 😢

Hi! Do you have any advice on how to get a puppy not to chew on or play with their house line? We have a mini dachshund puppy who is 9 weeks old and since we got him I’ve tried to put the line on a few times, but he immediately chews it and it turns into a toy for him. Do i need to let him get it out of his system and desensitize to it or address it?
Just replace it with a toy after you take it from their mouth. Ours does the same. She still does from time to time but not as much as when I first started with it.

I've been trying to implement what you've suggested on this video but nothing seems to work. Her biting escalates once I try stop the biting. She would bite everything but her toys many times. Every time I try to correct her she bites me. We don't play rough with her but I have to admit that we get frustrated as our puppy doesn't listen to us and keeps on biting like if she was getting angry when we try to stop this behavior. Our puppy jumps and charges at visitors and nips them on their legs. She's 10 months old and it's getting worse. We've started putting her on the leash when someone comes in the house. She calms down and even becomes friendly with the person, only to charge them, and jump and nip/bite them without warning. Any suggestions?

My 3 yr old Shih Tzu continues to "mouth" especially when a visitor comes into the house. He never really bites but it scares people. I have tried a lot of things but still can't get him to stop. It's hard to have friends over and if I try putting him behind a gate he barks. I do have some success with using the house leach. I would like to see something with addressing this with an adult dog.
Hello!we are starting when we engage in play she quickly loses interest in playing/biting toys and PREFERS to bite our clothes/skin. I am not sure if my puppy is feeling frustrated b/c she is no longer running the show but the collar for controlling behavior seams to be amping her up and not calming her down and making her want to bite us more. We are staying calm and using the word “cut it” and the minute we grab her collar she turns into a rolling crocodile. We will do this ten times over with no improvements. She does not seem to connect biting your owners equals a correction. She’s a female 11 week old mini dachshund. Any tips would be great. TY!! Can we use a harness for a houseline? We have a shih tzu and whenever he wears a collar and we step on the house line he pulls and starts coughing. Thanks for your content, super helpful!

Love this video and the advice. I find that when I try and give a tug or even go for my dog’s collar he freaks out and gets defensive. Any suggestions to correct rather than the collar tug?
Same with mine, lol. I've been using treats and find that distracting them with that while holding the collar works as you praise them when they've calmed to get the treat. I only attempt it about 4 times in a row at a time because their attention span is short, and if you're overdoing it, it just sets them up for failure. Every dog is different, though. You just have to try different things at different times and see what works best for your pup. Good luck 😊
Is it too late to start using a House line on a 9mth old puppy, to try & combat some of the mistakes we've made? ie calming & settling better, & mouthing/biting-obviously not designed to hurt but does because bigger teeth!

i just adopted a one year old rescue dog and while he isn’t a puppy i’ve found the puppy nipping tips help as well. in my experience these videos that say “puppy biting” can often be very helpful for play biting in adult dogs who haven’t had the proper training as well (such as rescues) because they’ve essentially never grown out of that puppy phase. as long as it’s just play biting and not aggressive these tips should also work, may just take a bit longer.
How do you continue training your puppy when the neighbor comes over with the kids and out of control. It seems like all training flies out the window!! I try to keep the puppy calm but....

We have a 10 week old bernedoodle who is not treat motivated at all. (And we have tried a thousand different kids of treats) I have had a lot of puppies in my life, but I have never had one that is not treat motivated. She responds pretty well to praise, but do you have any advice for a puppy that is not treat motivated?
Did you find anything that worked? We have a new, 8wo Airedoodle puppy, and he seems rather disinterested in treats and toys, although he knows what belongs to him. He loves being with us and is eager to please, but all the preparation I did watching the clicker and treat videos is not viable. So frustrating! I am just trying to teach him commands using praise and cuddles, or redirection. He has only been here one night, but I don't want bad habits to set in.
@@SunshineDesserts praise has worked really well for Remy. She also has fallen in love with her big sister, Paisley (our pit/lab mix who is 5) and will do anything that she does. I am thankful that Paisley is such a great dog. Once she saw Paisley getting treats, she decided that she will perform for treats too. She still is not completely treat motivated, but a combination of praise and treats (whatever her sister is getting) has worked pretty well for us. Good luck to you! The puppy stage is such a challenging but rewarding stage. It is so fun to see them turn into young adults.

My 10 week puppy does not appear to be food motivated like the dogs in almost every video I have watched. He will take the food but does so slowly and gently and he loses interest in food related training after a minute or two.

What is the best way to handle company when we are in the new-puppy-training phase? My teen boys' friends want to see the puppy and it makes him wild. He's been great with us, not nipping as much anymore using the collar/scruff grab and sit. But when friends come over, all bets are off. Even with the house line, he leaps so hard towards them that he flips himself, and if they touch him or have their socked feet around him, he bites constantly and flails all over. He's really little so everyone thinks he is cute when he behaves like this. I look like the meanie grabbing his collar to try to control him, lol. Do we just not let anyone touch him until he is more trained, or should we use these opportunities to work with him and teach him? The collar/scruff grab did nothing for him though, he just kept trying to bite me, whining and flipping all over which is so unlike him.
I have a DOBIE puppy and her teeth are sharp. It hurts so what I do is grab her ears and stretch her cheeks back and say no bite until she relaxes and starts licking me it took about a week but if she gets outta line, I just say no bite and she licks me instead. It worked for me. 🤷♀️
My question is why keep giving them treats every time you wany them to correct or obey or stop. What else can you offer or do instead of actreat which gets too be too much food to keep giving them to control them.

I have a deaf puppy. Trying to get this down with a deaf dog has proven difficult because even when I do the collar thing, he thinks I’m playing when I grab the collar to help settle, etc. please help!
If the pup can't hear you, you need to make it visible for them. Body language. Dogs are able to understand our facial expressions and read our body language. Make sure to use gestures for everything. So to make the dog sit you use one specific gesture. Same for laying down, come here, stay and all other commands. You can also use treats and make the pup use his nose. He smells the treat, but you won't give it until he calms down. This can take a while, up to 20 minutes even. Don't give up! They're smart and will understand soon enough that being calm is rewarded.
@McCann Dog Training do you have videos of older, bigger dogs that haven't had an ounce of training because they were in a shelter? We have a Husky mix that loves to use me as a chew toy!! I have cuts and bruises all over my arms I look like my husband abuses me! Little puppy teeth are easier to handle. I feel like I'm being attacked and need help!
I have a 7 month old red retriever and she is always biting my hands and clothes. She even snarles her face when she does it to me. I say "Enough" and she does it more. I am the second in the alpha role. Is this just play or more serious? Help!
probably depends on how hard the biting is. if it's pretty hard, you really need to take her in and get some 1 on 1 training with a professional, since it shows she didn't learn bite inhibition when puppies are usually supposed to, and it will be more difficult to not end up with an adult dog that doesn't know how to regulate their mouth pressure.
Fair warning every one, I want to brag a little about my puppy. :P I was lucky that my girl wasn't mean in anyway, she was playful. There is simply an age when they like to gnaw and nip and to some extent it's ok to let them. It's a phase. I read or saw (somewhere) that mother dogs make a loud high pitched yip when a puppy's bite is a little too hard and it stops them instantly because of course they weren't doing it to hurt you. I did that a few times and my puppy would immediately back off and make big eyes like "omg I'm so sorry!". As a result she has developed the softest mouth. In fact now she's older she doesn't mouth you at all, and will turn her head away if you try to put your fiinger between her teeth or anything. Another scenario is when playing and the dog is prancing around, "laughing" (the huffs and snorts they make when they play I think of as laughter and excitement) maybe trying to grab a toy from you or whatever. If it's mouth is open it might accidentally touch you with a tooth - immediately stop the game and say a sharp "NO", then wait 10 seconds and start the game again. (Yeah I watched this video too late but really, it's not the word, its the tone: "stop whatever you're doing immediately"). 10-30 seconds time-out is enough for them to get the message. Punishment (that word just means consequences, like stopping the game, a reprimand, turning your back and removing your attention from them. I do not mean you should hit or harm your dog) rarely needs to be longer than that. I taught her never to bark in the house by doing that. We're playing, she gets excited, she lets out a bark and the playing stops. If the response is short, sharp and immediately follows the undesired behaviour the dog understands the connection. But if you leave your dog alone and it has chewed furniture, you can't punish it because it absolutely will not draw a connection between the punishment and something it did hours ago. It will just think you are an unpredictable person. Honestly, I'm not a trainer. I just applied two things consistently - one was just that: being consistent. Exact same response to the same behaviour, every time, without deviation and like I said, immediately. The second is, rather than telling her what not to do, I tried to teach her what to do. A third thing is I trained frequently and still do refreshers. That's it and if I list here the things she's learned. *No barking *No biting or mouthing *Wait while her food is being served. *Go to her spot when there's any sort of activity at the front door (she used to get excited and get underfoot and we were worried she might even run out). *No entry to the kitchen. *All 4 on the floor - no jumping on people when they come home. *Both verbal and non-verbal (hand signal) commands to sit. *Both verbal and non-verbal commands to stay - which means lie down and touch your chin to the floor and wait for the next command. *Verbal command to drop it. *Hand signal to come to my side and heel. *A low soft whistle to come. *Her name means to come. We had to teach humans not to over use her name and not to refer to her by name. THAT was hard! *A finger snap usually means a release from whatever previous holding command, it can mean "at ease", you have permission to do whatever it is you're wanting to do, and sometimes it also means bring back whatever is in your mouth. Yes, dogs understand context. Another example, she knows she's not allowed on the furniture on her own but she is allowed if invited by a human. Interestingly, dogs are also multilingual. In our household two languages are spoken and she knows most of her commands in both. *She's incredibly well housebroken. In fact she's kind of fastidious and doesn't like using "pulbic restrooms". We only figured this out because we took her to a park once and we didn't really notice that she didn't do any business there but when we got home several hours later, she raced across the house and out the back to get to "her" toilet and let go! *There's probably some I've forgotten. Now all of this took a while. I think we started around 6 months and it took till she was around 2 and a half. She doesn't make mistakes but she's a bit of an individualist so sometimes she will look at you meaningfully as if to say, "Do you mind? I was doing something." before obeying. Occasionally she just decides to be a d*&k, ignores you and deliberately does all the things she's not allowed to do like she's got a checklist but for the most part it has worked out well. By the way she taught me to play fetch. She kept bring various toys and dropping them at my feet or trying to actually place them in my hand. One day I threw one. That day I think she made me throw it about 200 times. :D

She’s stressed and biting is self soothing. All that playing and messing around is why she’s doing it.
Have you trjed enforced crate naps? Puppies get bitey and nip a lot more when they're tired but they can't self regulate well yet, so it helps to make them sleep and settle for a while.

Clamp their snouts shut untill they whimper and hold them tight to keep them from twisting around like a an alligator and they will calm down. Then immediately start to pet them and say calming things. So they know it’s well received to be nice and calm , the snout thing is to keep them from biting you and also to teach not to bite period .
This has worked with our Rottweiler anyways

most positive reinforcement trainers set the dog up for success by taking extremely small steps that they know the dogs won’t fail and gradually increase the difficulty but not until they’ve already mastered the previous step. this might make it look like the dog is already trained, but really they’re just not putting them into a situation where they’ll be able to rehearse undesirable behaviors. i can’t speak for this specific trainer but i’ve heard other trainers say this.

I wish that I would’ve watched these videos before I got my Rottweiler puppy. She’s approaching 10 weeks and growing fast and she has a lot of bad habits already. Even though she seems really smart I’m learning to give bits of kibble to get her to listen. She has a lot of energy And doesn’t listen so I have a trainer that’s going to help and I’m going to do Petsmart puppy classes and then intermediate. She is growing 2 pounds a week and I have plate and screws in my neck so bending down to her to correct her is killing me so I’m learning a lot. Thank you so much.💚💚

Our dachshund puppy only really likes to nip or "bite" when it's play time. We can play with her feet and ears all we want at 3-4 months old. She's definitely starting to learn the tone of voice and settle. When it comes to toys, we've taught her to release the toy when we want and sit. Usually I'll praise and toss the toy for a game of fetch if she listens. I've been weening off treats slowly and it seems to have been having a positive effect so far. I'm pretty impressed with how well behaved she is for 4 months old. Your tips have been helpful and I'm grateful for the tools you and your channel have provided.

You are great to learn from. My household recently got 2 male Pug puppies now they are 10 weeks old. One is a big chubby boy the other was the runt of the litter and is still so tiny but healthy. His larger brother bites and pulls his small brother's ears making him cry and squeal in pain. Except to pick up and comfort the small one, and because the biter is also a puppy, the family has been grabbing a toy for the biter instead of correcting him. The family will all be watching this video tonight.

What if this doesn't work? I have a 3mo old german shepard land shark. Anchoring the collar like that doesnt work, he gets really upset and starts aggressively barking and growling. Redirecting doesnt work, he will drop the toy to eat me... 😢

We have a mini dachshund puppy who is 9 weeks old and since we got him I’ve tried to put the line on a few times, but he immediately chews it and it turns into a toy for him. Do i need to let him get it out of his system and desensitize to it or address it?

Just replace it with a toy after you take it from their mouth. Ours does the same. She still does from time to time but not as much as when I first started with it.
Hi! My daughter and I adopted a 2 month old puppy like 3 weeks ago and we've been having a lot of problems trying to have her stop nipping and biting. I've been trying to implement what you've suggested on this video but nothing seems to work. Her biting escalates once I try stop the biting. She would bite everything but her toys many times. Every time I try to correct her she bites me. Our puppy jumps and charges at visitors and nips them on their legs. She's 10 months old and it's getting worse. We've started putting her on the leash when someone comes in the house. She calms down and even becomes friendly with the person, only to charge them, and jump and nip/bite them without warning. Any suggestions?

My 3 yr old Shih Tzu continues to "mouth" especially when a visitor comes into the house. He never really bites but it scares people. I have tried a lot of things but still can't get him to stop. It's hard to have friends over and if I try putting him behind a gate he barks. I do have some success with using the house leach. I would like to see something with addressing this with an adult dog.
Hello!we are starting when we engage in play she quickly loses interest in playing/biting toys and PREFERS to bite our clothes/skin. I am not sure if my puppy is feeling frustrated b/c she is no longer running the show but the collar for controlling behavior seams to be amping her up and not calming her down and making her want to bite us more. We are staying calm and using the word “cut it” and the minute we grab her collar she turns into a rolling crocodile. We will do this ten times over with no improvements. She does not seem to connect biting your owners equals a correction. She’s a female 11 week old mini dachshund. Any tips would be great. TY!! Can we use a harness for a houseline? We have a shih tzu and whenever he wears a collar and we step on the house line he pulls and starts coughing. Thanks for your content, super helpful!
Harness is definitely safer and better than using a collar in general, just because of the tugging. i only use the collar for tags

Love this video and the advice. I find that when I try and give a tug or even go for my dog’s collar he freaks out and gets defensive. Any suggestions to correct rather than the collar tug?
Same with mine, lol. I've been using treats and find that distracting them with that while holding the collar works as you praise them when they've calmed to get the treat. I only attempt it about 4 times in a row at a time because their attention span is short, and if you're overdoing it, it just sets them up for failure. Every dog is different, though. You just have to try different things at different times and see what works best for your pup. Good luck 😊

i just adopted a one year old rescue dog and while he isn’t a puppy i’ve found the puppy nipping tips help as well. in my experience these videos that say “puppy biting” can often be very helpful for play biting in adult dogs who haven’t had the proper training as well (such as rescues) because they’ve essentially never grown out of that puppy phase. as long as it’s just play biting and not aggressive these tips should also work, may just take a bit longer.

We have a 10 week old bernedoodle who is not treat motivated at all. (And we have tried a thousand different kids of treats) I have had a lot of puppies in my life, but I have never had one that is not treat motivated. She responds pretty well to praise, but do you have any advice for a puppy that is not treat motivated?
Did you find anything that worked? We have a new, 8wo Airedoodle puppy, and he seems rather disinterested in treats and toys, although he knows what belongs to him. He loves being with us and is eager to please, but all the preparation I did watching the clicker and treat videos is not viable. So frustrating! I am just trying to teach him commands using praise and cuddles, or redirection. He has only been here one night, but I don't want bad habits to set in.
@@SunshineDesserts praise has worked really well for Remy. She also has fallen in love with her big sister, Paisley (our pit/lab mix who is 5) and will do anything that she does. I am thankful that Paisley is such a great dog. Once she saw Paisley getting treats, she decided that she will perform for treats too. She still is not completely treat motivated, but a combination of praise and treats (whatever her sister is getting) has worked pretty well for us. Good luck to you! The puppy stage is such a challenging but rewarding stage. It is so fun to see them turn into young adults.

Instead of words you use hand signals. I incorporated hand signals to my pitbull/black lab and it helped a lot, even though he's not even deaf.

What is the best way to handle company when we are in the new-puppy-training phase? My teen boys' friends want to see the puppy and it makes him wild. He's been great with us, not nipping as much anymore using the collar/scruff grab and sit. But when friends come over, all bets are off. Even with the house line, he leaps so hard towards them that he flips himself, and if they touch him or have their socked feet around him, he bites constantly and flails all over. He's really little so everyone thinks he is cute when he behaves like this. I look like the meanie grabbing his collar to try to control him, lol. Do we just not let anyone touch him until he is more trained, or should we use these opportunities to work with him and teach him? The collar/scruff grab did nothing for him though, he just kept trying to bite me, whining and flipping all over which is so unlike him.
I have a DOBIE puppy and her teeth are sharp. It hurts so what I do is grab her ears and stretch her cheeks back and say no bite until she relaxes and starts licking me it took about a week but if she gets outta line, I just say no bite and she licks me instead. It worked for me. 🤷♀️
My question is why keep giving them treats every time you wany them to correct or obey or stop. What else can you offer or do instead of actreat which gets too be too much food to keep giving them to control them.

If the pup can't hear you, you need to make it visible for them.
Body language. Dogs are able to understand our facial expressions and read our body language. Make sure to use gestures for everything. So to make the dog sit you use one specific gesture. Same for laying down, come here, stay and all other commands.
You can also use treats and make the pup use his nose. He smells the treat, but you won't give it until he calms down. This can take a while, up to 20 minutes even. Don't give up! They're smart and will understand soon enough that being calm is rewarded.
@McCann Dog Training do you have videos of older, bigger dogs that haven't had an ounce of training because they were in a shelter? We have a Husky mix that loves to use me as a chew toy!! I have cuts and bruises all over my arms I look like my husband abuses me! Little puppy teeth are easier to handle. I feel like I'm being attacked and need help!

I have a 7 month old red retriever and she is always biting my hands and clothes. She even snarles her face when she does it to me. I say "Enough" and she does it more. I am the second in the alpha role. Is this just play or more serious? Help!
probably depends on how hard the biting is. if it's pretty hard, you really need to take her in and get some 1 on 1 training with a professional, since it shows she didn't learn bite inhibition when puppies are usually supposed to, and it will be more difficult to not end up with an adult dog that doesn't know how to regulate their mouth pressure.
Fair warning every one, I want to brag a little about my puppy. :P
I was lucky that my girl wasn't mean in anyway, she was playful. There is simply an age when they like to gnaw and nip and to some extent it's ok to let them. It's a phase. I read or saw (somewhere) that mother dogs make a loud high pitched yip when a puppy's bite is a little too hard and it stops them instantly because of course they weren't doing it to hurt you. I did that a few times and my puppy would immediately back off and make big eyes like "omg I'm so sorry!". As a result she has developed the softest mouth. In fact now she's older she doesn't mouth you at all, and will turn her head away if you try to put your fiinger between her teeth or anything.
Another scenario is when playing and the dog is prancing around, "laughing" (the huffs and snorts they make when they play I think of as laughter and excitement) maybe trying to grab a toy from you or whatever. If it's mouth is open it might accidentally touch you with a tooth - immediately stop the game and say a sharp "NO", then wait 10 seconds and start the game again. (Yeah I watched this video too late but really, it's not the word, its the tone: "stop whatever you're doing immediately"). 10-30 seconds time-out is enough for them to get the message. Punishment (that word just means consequences, like stopping the game, a reprimand, turning your back and removing your attention from them. I do not mean you should hit or harm your dog) rarely needs to be longer than that. I taught her never to bark in the house by doing that. We're playing, she gets excited, she lets out a bark and the playing stops. If the response is short, sharp and immediately follows the undesired behaviour the dog understands the connection. But if you leave your dog alone and it has chewed furniture, you can't punish it because it absolutely will not draw a connection between the punishment and something it did hours ago. It will just think you are an unpredictable person.
Honestly, I'm not a trainer. I just applied two things consistently - one was just that: being consistent. Exact same response to the same behaviour, every time, without deviation and like I said, immediately. The second is, rather than telling her what not to do, I tried to teach her what to do. A third thing is I trained frequently and still do refreshers. That's it and if I list here the things she's learned.
*No barking
*No biting or mouthing
*Wait while her food is being served.
*Go to her spot when there's any sort of activity at the front door (she used to get excited and get underfoot and we were worried she might even run out).
*No entry to the kitchen.
*All 4 on the floor - no jumping on people when they come home.
*Both verbal and non-verbal (hand signal) commands to sit.
*Both verbal and non-verbal commands to stay - which means lie down and touch your chin to the floor and wait for the next command.
*Verbal command to drop it.
*Hand signal to come to my side and heel.
*A low soft whistle to come.
*Her name means to come. We had to teach humans not to over use her name and not to refer to her by name. THAT was hard!
*A finger snap usually means a release from whatever previous holding command, it can mean "at ease", you have permission to do whatever it is you're wanting to do, and sometimes it also means bring back whatever is in your mouth. Yes, dogs understand context. Another example, she knows she's not allowed on the furniture on her own but she is allowed if invited by a human. Interestingly, dogs are also multilingual. In our household two languages are spoken and she knows most of her commands in both.
*She's incredibly well housebroken. In fact she's kind of fastidious and doesn't like using "pulbic restrooms". We only figured this out because we took her to a park once and we didn't really notice that she didn't do any business there but when we got home several hours later, she raced across the house and out the back to get to "her" toilet and let go!
*There's probably some I've forgotten.
Now all of this took a while. I think we started around 6 months and it took till she was around 2 and a half. She doesn't make mistakes but she's a bit of an individualist so sometimes she will look at you meaningfully as if to say, "Do you mind? I was doing something." before obeying. Occasionally she just decides to be a d*&k, ignores you and deliberately does all the things she's not allowed to do like she's got a checklist but for the most part it has worked out well.
By the way she taught me to play fetch. She kept bring various toys and dropping them at my feet or trying to actually place them in my hand. One day I threw one. That day I think she made me throw it about 200 times. :D
