Thank you for making this wonderful video! We struggled for a whole week to get our 12-week-old puppy to calm down in his crate. He would whine non-stop before freaking out and resorting to barks and making a mess of his crate. After several sleepless nights in a row, we were at our wits end. Then, looking for some guidance, I came across this video. I followed the instructions to a "T." MAGIC! The first 30 minutes were iffy, but by the end of the first hour, I could already see a difference. We worked on this on-and-off throughout the day. By bedtime, we were nervous. Our pup whimpered quietly once or twice, but otherwise remained calm and quiet. He slept through the night, only waking us up to let us know he needed to be let outside twice. It was nothing short of miraculous. He's remained calm in his crate for a couple consecutive nights. Thank you for teaching us how to be better doggy parents!

This works!!!! My puppy was an angel when I first got her. Then a few days in she started whining/crying hysterically. Literally in 5 mins of practice (immediately saying quiet) she settled down.
Here are some things that worked overnight for me. My puppy whined or barked for an average of about 10 minutes every night before bed for about a month. I’m not saying it’s going to work for everyone but this helped my puppy go to his crate on command. My girlfriend and I are busy people and can’t always come home throughout the day, sometimes not being able to let him out for 6 hours at a time (I guess it wasn’t straight to the kennel, he has his kennel open in a small pen.) The first thing I’d do when I got home from work or wake up was get myself all situated. Id put my keys away, get changed, and hang out for about 5 minutes. If he wasn’t whining or scratching at the gate, then I’d let him out. The next thing I’d do is just hang out and sit next to his crate to try and show him that it’s okay to be in here and it’s not punishment and that it’s HIS area/room. Every time he’d go in his crate by himself, I would reward him with positive encouragement and some treats. After that, I’d bring his bed out of his kennel and bring it into the living room. I thought of it as a way of showing him that it’s his place to sleep and relax since we don’t let him on the couch yet. The last thing I’d do which I think he enjoyed the most was his stuffed kong toy. When it was time for bed, I would shut off all the lights and just hang out, for about 10 minutes giving him the hint it’s time for bed. I would get some of his kibble, treats, fill it with a little beef broth and water, and freeze it. I think he viewed it as a treat and it kept him busy when it was time for us to go to sleep. As many of you have seen here or in other videos, it’s crucial that you don’t acknowledge or give in when they are barking and whining. It’s also important to give them your attention and wear them out before you put them away. At the end of the day, they are still puppies and adjusting to a new environment. I hope this helps!
my partner and I just adopted a puppy and she wasn’t doing well in a crate. After training her with the help of this video for literally half a day she has done WONDERFULLY. I have a pit bull /XL bully , I’m glad I’m doing it correctly, so far .. I have a 30ft leash for training so that leash tip is perfect tip !!! Also, viewers make sure the temperature is good for the dog maybe put a little blanket in the crate. I have a mini heater just far enough so he doesn’t get too hot . But my pup sleeps best when he’s warm …. Just make sure it’s not too close or too hot ..

I never thought I could crate train a dog, and I def failed my first pup. lol. but my new 2nd dog seems to need it and I used your tips and some others I found around and he is doing pretty good! Thank you for posting. I really appreciate your videos!
Needed to come back to say our 8-week-old puppy was struggling in her crate. Followed this, and she just slept through the night. So useful - and successful!
Thank you so much for this video! I am a first time puppy owner and this is so helpful! My pup is currently resting in her crate after being very wild in the house. Thank you! I have wanted her to do what she’s doing now but didn’t have the tools!
Your crate training tips were a game-changer! After doing this my puppy is now sleeping through the night and no longer whines in his crate. Took a little bit of reinforcement over a few days with amazing results. Thank you so much!
My newest addition is a puppy named Josie. I put her in her crate to sleep, and she's going nuts right now. I tried this technique...and in 10 minutes, she is quiet. :)
Wow Thankyou for this video. Our 9 week old cavapoo, sweet as she is, was whining whenever in her crate and she couldn’t see us. Just one day of this training method and can already see a huge difference! We want her crate to be her safe space and have been implementing all your crate training tips. So far so good!
This is so helpful thanks! I just got a black Labrador puppy today and she always cries in her crate already and wants to be let out. She starts barking as well which is a pain lol
It’s a Whippet! I just brought home a Whippet puppy 2 days ago. He doesn’t like to be alone. He was kenneled with free access to 3 adult dogs and 6 siblings. He cries for about 5-10 minutes and then settles down. I’m hoping to improve his acceptance of the crate.
Okay ✍️✍️ my pup is so smart he stay in his crate with the door open if he stays until i call him out i reward him also when he stays quiet inside like you show. But now i am taking in consideration to move the crate around i think that would give him peace of mind. Thank you. Your videos are great 👌🙏🫶✍️✨️🐾
Did these techniques 1 hour a day with my 8 week old berner/pyraneese cross And IT WORKS!!!! First night we got him was brutal. After finding this video, doing 1 hour a day past 3 days, we get to sleep on our schedule to take him out with minimal crying every night so far. Start slow, baby steps. Make the crate comfortable and getting him to go in on his own (other videos show this) and don’t close the door right away, he knows he can go in and out and lots of treats+clicker+praises. And we feed him his foods in it. Then start closes and “quiet” like this video and build from there! Good luck folks!
I just got a havanese, he is 2 months old! I have the same problem as well 😭 He’s only calm when he sleeps but our main problem with him right now is that he loves biting hands and feet (a bit too hard), do you have any tips for that?
@@alimonet8898 hey, I just keep putting something he’s allowed to chew in his mouth, I also hold his mouth closed or open to teach him that biting is not acceptable as I yelp loud. He’s getting way better in the crate since I’ve been using it more. 🤞🏼
I have a question: MCCanns videos all suggest that you should keep your pup in the crate when you are not training. One of the reasons we are getting a pup is also emotional support; to chill with him, cuddle with him and play, how is this possible when it needs to be in the crate all the time? I really appreciate all the videos you guys are sharing, great information and tips on raising a dog!
I would use the crate then for sleeping. When your puppy naps its a great time to let them feel the comfort of the crate while napping. Yes I KNOW you want to pet and cuddle the sleeper, but you can continue that after you teach "comfort/sleeping" crate training. When your pup goes to the crate themselves (You leave the door open) when they want to relax/nap you know you have done it right. Crate training is over.
Our puppy (who we've had for a couple of weeks) turned 3 months old on the 27th. We just set up his crate today and have been training. Tonight is his big night - the first night sleeping in it. Now that he has a crate he'll have a place to go be while I have importrant human things to do (bathing, cooking, etc...). Thank you so much for your advice!
Great content. Question: How do you calm the puppy down in the crate when there is another adult dog roaming the house who is not crated and already trained? Thanks!
My puppy doesn’t take treats from me when whining in crate like when she has calmed down. She also doesn’t respond to me saying quiet in deep voice or tapping on her crate. What would you suggest in this case? Love your style of training. This pup has separation
@jim2thebob1 I'm determined to crate train her and she's only 10 weeks. She's quiet at night and as long as she can see me but screams if I walk away from her crate or leave to walk my other dogs. only stops if I come back to her crate. Do you have any advice for that?
When I didn't acknowledge the whining, crying at all he was fine. When I started "the training" with the reinforcement and treats he started yelping very loudly after the treat or the quiet command.
That’s why I put my dog in the crate and let her bark. Unwanted behavior ( this type) gets ignored. She barked for 30 mins last night. Tonite she barked for about 2 mins.
Thank you!!!! I was trying to train and do the washing.... stopped everything to just work on just crate training.....worked quicker than I expected!🎉❤
Maybe I'm just expecting too much too soon, but my puppy still barks and whines in the crate when I leave the room after 3 weeks of feeding him there. The positives are: he'll go in straight away when it's time to eat and I have food in my hand for him, and he can sleep in there pretty much all night (at least 6 hours at a time). Sometimes he'll chill after like 10 minutes of barking, but I'd rather he didn't bark or get stressed at all and maybe I've let him rehearse that. Any other time when it's not bed time or I don't have food for him, he doesn't really want to go in, and will bark and whine as soon as I'm out of the room. In a couple weeks I'll need to start leaving him alone in there for a few hours during the day while I leave for work so I'm quite anxious about it!
@@mrdopeshoes In the two weeks since posting that, I think he's doing better! He's actually in there right now not making a peep while I'm in another room. There are times I'm even able to leave the house for a bit without him barking. Not perfect, but definitely improving!
Although taking him to work did not go well he wouldn't stop yelping the entire time so had to take him home... But he's only 4 months old I dunno many dogs who could handle that.
@@onlyadamrosa Thank you, I appreciate the update. I am getting my pup in two weeks and I will work on crate training and separation anxiety on day 1. Keep your head up, it will keep getting better.
Personally I put a blanket on my dog's crates because it makes the crate feel more home-y and more like a cozy den and a safe space for him (he still have one side which he can look out from.)
Mi Pomsky is 2 and I had to build a black out room out of wood and sound proof to put him in and he’ll immediately settle. Or the barking would last 5 hours
I want to see the long form of you leaving the room and coming back immediately and seeing what the next moment was. I don't know how to progress this stage yet.
Hi! My dog gets crazy in a crate in the 1st sec when I leave the room (my neighbours are getting mad). What to do? 5:20 training would solve the situation?
My baby Yorkie is so naughty at this. He has really bad separation anxiety. When we go to bed at night and put him in his crate he does excellent. No whinning or barking or anything. When we go to work we have a puppy camera in the mud room where he stays and same thing. But if he knows I'm home and he can see or hear me he wants to be by my side (or at my feet) the entire time. Which when I'm doing things like cooking dinner that can be dangerous for us both. Thank you for all your videos! I've been working with him a lot now that you have given me a clear sense of direction. I do have a question though on what do if treats sometimes don't work. He has to be in the mood for treats. And right when I tell him good boy he starts doing the naughty thing right that next second whether it be biting or whining or whatever.
Do u have video on crate training for older dog that had trauma as puppy? As a puppy his paw got in slat when he was transferred in/out. Now refuses a crate, even with treats
my biggest problem with my dobie is the separation anxiety she freaks out in a crate unless she’s super tired or I sit by her crate by that doesn’t bother me the thing that does bother me is when she gets let out of the crate she freaks out whining and barking I can’t tell if it’s excitement? Or if she’s super anxious she also has to bite onto something and hold it till her whining episode is over if I don’t approach the crate with a toy she bites onto my shirt and won’t let go
We’ve been having our husky since he was able to leave his mother. Nitro is 2 years old now, he barks whin nonstop while in his kennel especially when our children are up and about. We’ve done everything and nothing is working it’s overwhelming very annoying. I hope these tricks help(even though we’ve done majority of them already)
I have an 8-week-old puppy and not a single one of these tips works with her for some reason. I don't know if it's because of her breed, with her being a hunting dog, and inherently being a bit more independent, brave, and stubborn since in the future she'll be hunting, deer and boar. I'm having a real difficult time getting her to do any training honestly. I'm hoping that by the 9th and 10th week she'll start to listen more.
What type of dog is it? With certain breeds the typical puppy food is way too high in protein. It makes them hyperactive. Feed them adult kibble or raw instead. Just a tip.
@@dearbhal She is a Kishu puppy. I live in Japan and she eats the kibble my hunting club recommended for her, along with baby formula and deer meat. Perhaps I need to cut back on the protein though, like you said.
Question to the channel (or people who already experienced this)... How exactly do you "move the crate" (big heavy crate) to another room, since the dog can't be carried in it? Close the doors and let the dog loose while moving the crate? Using a leash to have the dog with you as you move it, or with help of a second person...? Is there a playtime between changing location?
Good video, So my Beegle howls in her crate when she sees me and when she knows i'm home. Apparently when im gone all day she lies down and sleeps but when i come home she loses her "poop" and wont stop howling. The same thing happens in the morning when she wakes up for morning walks. My wife has trained her to her now i want to train her to me too.
I have a problem with my for month old puppy peeing Under the blanket When we go to bed .. there's pads on the floor, and he uses them, but sometimes he pees under the blanket When we go to sleep and usually get off the bed to use the pads... thank you for your help...
What is the optimal width (1cm, 1.5cm or 2cm) and length for a purebred sportline Labrador Retriever puppy to have a leash without a hand strap when coming out of the cage (as always shown in the videos)? Can you always use a 2cm dog leash without a hand strap for this puppy?
I have had my toy poodle a week he is 9 weeks now.. I didn't have a crate when we got him but I have a pen which I put a lovely comfy bed in.. during the day he will not sleep in the bed, howls and screams like his skin is being peeled off.. I go back so many times to reassure and give treats with him on the bed but he eventually falls asleep in the pen, not on the bed and even then he isn't asleep deeply as any sound and he is howling again.. today I started using the crate as a game as other videos showed and I can't imagine how long jts going to take to get him to actually stay in there without damaging his teeth on the metal.. I haven't tried to close the door yet but I can imagine that's what he will do.. he gets so tired too and extremely bitey at that stage.. if he isn't in the pen for a sleep/howl he follows me around and if I stand still he curls up on my feet.. I imagine he is suffering separation anxiety and I so want to get him calm and enjoying his sleep time but my levels of anxiety are getting high too now!

I took in two pups that were dropped off. I live alone and have a full time job so these are helpful
You literally just gave me some of my life back. My puppy responded to this immediately. Im continuing this method!
5:57 was cartoonishly hilarious when she statued after your "quiet."🤣
Thank you for sharing your insights.
That was hilarious, 😅🤣🤣
This is the thing we've consistently been struggling with - thank you so much!
I just got my puppy yesterday and he cried and whined for hours in his crate. As soon as I started using this it worked. Its been a few hours now no whining☺️ I’m for sure subscribing for more advise‼️
Your puppy is passive mine will keep whining non stop even when i dont attend to its cry.
Such great timing. I’m picking up puppy end of month. I so badly want crate training to work especially at night. Afraid of tripping over small dog. Thank you!
I am so thankful for your video u have help me train all 3 my dogs to be crate train and not whine at only 8wks and second night home 🥰 please keep the videos coming
Yes!!! Exactly what I needed. We’ve got a 5mo greyhound puppy and are struggling with crate training, trying to work through it day by day.
I was literally looking for help with whining in the crate! Thank you 🥰
My dog was literally starting to cry in the crate when this came up on my feed. Great video
This is exactly the problem I have with my puppy, excellent video!
I've really been enjoying your channel. You have good, practical and easy to understand videos with techniques that work.
wow i just did this and totally worked - trained him with kibble until he fell asleep for nap time, little whines but he went to sleep!!!
Wow. Within 15 min of working with my dog he’s already so much calmer in his crate. Thank you!!
This has been a huge help, thank you! After about an hour of working with my dog she totally got it!
Thank you. Your videos are great 👌🙏🫶✍️✨️🐾
Love this channel I just got a frenchie as a gift and trying to crate train him so when I’m not home. He’s doing okay for his 3rd day
Did these techniques 1 hour a day with my 8 week old berner/pyraneese cross And IT WORKS!!!!
My 6 month old Havanese is still barking when first in the wire crate or plastic travel crate so I definitely need to work on crate training. Thanks!
I just got a havanese, he is 2 months old! I have the same problem as well 😭
He’s only calm when he sleeps but our main problem with him right now is that he loves biting hands and feet (a bit too hard), do you have any tips for that?
What a beautiful dog. ❤❤. Whippets are notorious for wanting to be with you all the time. Thank you for trying to help her be calm.
The leash wiggle really helped us
Great content.
Any progress?
Throw the crate across the room
This is how my puppy is. She just won't stop. I'm so tired of it 😪
@@laurenfager583 you gotta keep going. My puppy was non stop barking. Put a blanket over the top of the crate at night.
@jim2thebob1 I'm determined to crate train her and she's only 10 weeks. She's quiet at night and as long as she can see me but screams if I walk away from her crate or leave to walk my other dogs. only stops if I come back to her crate. Do you have any advice for that?
Tried this with my puppy and this worked so well. Thanks for this :)
You are a lifesaver I couldn't stand my boxers screeching. And now it's all fixed thankyou
Good luck 🤞
Thank you so much, Kale! Excellent training!
FABOULOUS VIDEOS!!!! thank you so much for training me to be the best parent for my puppy!!!
Finally a video featuring a sight hound!! My Afghan cries in his crate …
🙏 It takes repetition & patience to progression forward. Amen.🙏
Personally I put a blanket on my dog's crates because it makes the crate feel more home-y and more like a cozy den and a safe space for him (he still have one side which he can look out from.)
so far this was the most helpful yet! thank you!
Thanks!
you are amazing and helping us so much! Thank you!
The type of voice you use is perfect
Bro she save my sleep thank you so much
Genius the best training videos ever.
Thank you so much. This video really help with my two pups dealing with Neophobia. Thank you so much.
Wow a great trainer 🎉
Thank you for making this wonderful video!!
Mi Pomsky is 2 and I had to build a black out room out of wood and sound proof to put him in and he’ll immediately settle. Or the barking would last 5 hours
I want to see the long form of you leaving the room and coming back immediately and seeing what the next moment was. I don't know how to progress this stage yet.
good job!
A very useful video. Thank you very mucvh! I trained my GSD also in less than an houre.Great!
I have the same problem! Hope to see an answer because I really would love to know!!!
Do u have video on crate training for older dog that had trauma as puppy? As a puppy his paw got in slat when he was transferred in/out. Now refuses a crate, even with treats
Thank you for the tips!
my biggest problem with my dobie is the separation anxiety she freaks out in a crate unless she’s super tired or I sit by her crate by that doesn’t bother me the thing that does bother me is when she gets let out of the crate she freaks out whining and barking I can’t tell if it’s excitement? Or if she’s super anxious she also has to bite onto something and hold it till her whining episode is over if I don’t approach the crate with a toy she bites onto my shirt and won’t let go
I think you are great! Thank you so much for posting!!
How many hours per day I need to give this training for them so they can stay in crate for 4-5 hours without whining?
Simply incredible!! Thank you so much!!
I have a problem with my for month old puppy peeing Under the blanket When we go to bed .. there's pads on the floor, and he uses them, but sometimes he pees under the blanket When we go to sleep and usually get off the bed to use the pads... thank you for your help...
What a great video. Thank you so much
Thanks for the tip
Thanks 👍
He's really young & scared sounds like.
How do you get a puppy into a crate who is very anxious about going in!( she fights tooth and nail)😊
