I’m watching this at 3 something in the morning on day one of the puppy being with us 😭
😂😂😂
Yup. I slept on the floor next to the crate and had to let her just stay in a play area. But night two was exponentially better, and it helped me focus on what I was going to start training right away!
I feel your pain 😂
Day 6 for me. Puppy's still screaming!😭
I'm on night #1 with an 8 week old English Golden. We got a late start today on crate training. Zeke's Snuggle Puppy is in the crate where he left him after a one sided fight. Zeke is now sleeping at my feet. It's going to be a long night. We'll get an early start tomorrow.
My friends thought putting my dog in a crate was cruel .. at first... NOW they see it is ESSENTIAL
How is it essential?
We have 2 month old adorable Siberian Husky who’s an absolute nightmare when is time for bed. This is day 3 and my husband and I have given in to the howling, crying, and whining when our pup was in his crate. We grew very frustrated. After watching this video we immediately got to work . It will still take some time for our pup to get use to the crate. He wasn’t happy but we put down some training pads, gave him his favorite chew toy, placed a sheet over the crate, and put on calming music. He squealed, cried and whined even louder but after a few minutes he grew quiet. We have a lot of work to do but so thankful for this video. We will keep watching your videos to learn more about how to properly train our puppy. This is a learning experience for us too.🐶❤️
This is so great to hear! If you want to take an even deeper dive in your puppy training, you can check out our training course, 30 Days to Puppy Perfection: howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course/ It has more than 50 training game videos, worksheets and other resources designed to teach your puppy what you expect of him, and understand his cues as well.
Just brought my pup home. She whined for a few minutes but eventually settled on her own. I have music playing on top of the crate, a snuggle puppy in the crate with her and a blanket with her mom's scent. She's quiet for now...I hope it continues work moving forward.
You're off to a great start!
Thanks so much for this video, I am a first time owner to a 9 week old rottie and have been doing good on all these except the sleeping next to the crate… mine is a room away but in sight distance… this was so informative thanks again
We are happy it was helpful. We've recently revised a few of our methods. You can check out the updated video here: ruclips.net/video/s0r-E3R3XT4/видео.html
I have an 8 week old mini goldendoodle pup that I got 2 days ago. Thankfully her breeder already had her and her siblings partially crate trained and on a schedule which has helped tremendously bringing her home. I cover her crate when I put her down for naps or for the night and have Alexa play ocean sounds for her and she does so well with no whining unless she needs to potty. I’m learning a lot with YT videos and her teaching me patience as well lol. I am definitely going to get a snuggle pup for her, I didn’t know those existed! She’s used to doubling up with a sibling at night, so that will be a huge comfort as opposed to her lamb chop stuffie
It's great that your breeder started on that training. That makes it so much easier on the new puppy parent!
my puppy is 3 months old, and currently... she’s whining like crazy. and she was just fine before... oh boi... i knew what i was getting into tho😭
Is she doing better?
@@Summer-eu5fe yes, she’s a year and 1 month old now haha. she still whines on occasion, but that’s just her husky side coming in to play🤣… haven’t had to crate her in a while, so she just likes to sing
@@balake21 Awww thats pretty good🤣🤣🤣💕I'm glad things are working out! I can't wait for my little puppy, im getting her in a few weeks, She is a Pomeranian breed💕😊
@@Summer-eu5fe sweet, i wish you the best of luck, she sounds so cute!🥺💕
@@balake21 Thank youuu💕 She really is cute! I would send a picturw if i could
I wish I had started watching these videos BEFORE bringing my pup home! I thought I knew about crate training, but not enough LOL. I have been rewarding bad behavior (putting treats in to calm him down) and also "visiting" to see why he is barking... Luckily it has only been 5 days since he has come home and I have time to retrain.
You still have time!
@Kristin C....before there are actually videos out there telling dog parents to put treats in there to entice them to go in...we have to decide which is the best advice and roll with it
@@AStar-696 I don’t think that is conflicting advice though. It is still helpful to use treats to train them on the command to go in the crate and to build on making it a positive space as this video says to do. The key is to avoid giving treats while they are exhibiting the bad behavior that you do not want to reinforce like whining and barking.
Wow will give this a try really good video!!! Thank you!!
We've updated our suggestions on crying in the crate in this newer video: ruclips.net/video/s0r-E3R3XT4/видео.html
My 9 week old fur baby is too small to sleep in my bed, and always will be, so she sleeps in a nice, raised, plush kennel crate, right next to my bed. I raised babies so that skill transfered over to my fur baby. I'm surprised to learn that. She sleeps all night after only 10 days. No fussing. She gets her playtime, food, water, potty time, and loves before she goes in. In the day, I put her in for short periods of stay so I could do chores for a few minutes and return before she got upset, gradually I left her for longer periods. She has quickly learned that its a safe space and she won't be there forever.
It's great that she loves her crate!
I haven't used a crate before but now I know what to do in the future. Good stuff!! Thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Unless you can be next to the crate 24/7. It is not ideal for them. When they are sleepy have them go in the crate.
Couldn't agree more! Sometimes owner's are the worst enemy to a well mannered puppy
Thanks for watching!
Thank you!! I thought I was doing it right. I will start this asap.
We recently updated this video with some more advice. Please review it here: ruclips.net/video/s0r-E3R3XT4/видео.html
wow putting the blanket over the crate really helps she’s actually not crying today.
I put my puppy in his crate and put the crate on the bed with us. He doesn't cry all night. Eventually, I will work on moving the crate further and further away.
How is your puppy now? I’m currently trying what you did I hope it works
@@ggclub5971 It Worked great. He was on our bed for a week. Then on my dresser next to my bed for 2 weeks. Then I moved him to the other side of the room. Finally, he now sleeps in the kitchen in his crate with no problems.
@@ab6318 wow great!!! thanks for the reply :)
Glad to know this is normal. My pup just came from her mom yesterday and is at times inconsolable. I will stay positive and firm with her because we love her!
oh poor thing, how is it going now?
@@3hearts935 she is doing wonderful. All it took was putting a sheet over the door of her crate. Now she loves it and even goes in there on her own to take a nap. Thank you!❤
@@teajelmore so happy to hear that!
Just try this n my puppy was whining n barking for almost 40 mins... finally quite down for 10 mins n took him out... hopefully this will help train him to be better being in a kennel...
First night home...failed...took him out when he started barking and held him. Letting him cry now.
Relaxing videos for dogs will calm them while in the crate. My dog cried for hours so I put on a video and instantly quieted down and went to sleep.
Yes! Puppy calming music is one of the things we recommend when teaching a puppy to love their crate.
I know this is for new puppy owners but it’s so much easier to train a puppy when you already have a trained dog. The older dog kind of mentors the puppy and I’ve found that training went so much faster.
Will be getting a new pup in about 2 weeks. Video very informative. Thank you. 😊

We really appreciate this, thank you! Best of luck to you and your future puppy!
I don’t think my neighbors would appreciate me letting my pup cry it out. But I am holding out and not going right away.
Same.. I haven't started crate training because of the crying. It's brutal.
that was great, im looking for a dog.. it might take all year to find the one im looking for but learning more and more each day!

My dogs were like 4 or 5 before I allowed them to sleep out of the crate at night. I started letting them stay in the room uncrated when I went to work at 7 years old until they started pulling up the carpet.
Yep! We always recommend the dogs be in a crate (separate ones) while you are gone. Sometimes they just get too curious!
Thank you so much
You're welcome! Thank you for watching!
This is a great video. Our puppy is 9mos old. She sleeps all night but she whines in the morning. We had her getting up at 7-7:30am but for the last few weeks she’s been getting up/whining between 5-6:30am. We let her whine, she stops for about 20 minutes and then starts again. We have been keeping to the 7-7:30 take out of kennel time and not taking her out when she whines. What else can we do to stop the early a.m. whining?? When we do get her out, potty is not her first thing, it’s people and toys. BTW last week she figured out how to open her kennel!!!
Your pup may be hungry, thirsty, cold, wanting human companionship or have to go potty outside. We recommend taking a look at your pup's schedule and making adjustments as needed. Here is a great video to start with: ruclips.net/video/7tVJSbcHJVw/видео.html

It is so tempting to keep going over to my puppies crate when she whines. I will try your crate training tips on how to overcome her bad habits.
Please do!
It's not her "bad habits"... she's confined in a small prison cell/cage. How would you feel and react?
@@jenniferbeatty7545 wow, so whats your solution? Sleep with dog?
Luckily, I had a guide dog when I was a young adult. I was given the tools to have a good foundation for training. This is a boon for my puppy, Scooby Schnauzer 😊 I was able to set a strict rule for my son NOT TI ACKNOWLEDGE Scooby when he’s whining. 😂 I have towels on the crate because he’s so small he can get chilly. I don’t have a dog bed yet.
Thanks for commenting.
Taking comfort in the comments. Currently exhausted as my GSP puppy literally screams in the crate. As I live in a flat this is not ok. Spent the whole day has been making the crate fun. I’m getting there and so is he 😂

Covering the crate and trying really hard not to go to him when he cries worked. I checked the schedule you provided, it looks good except I have work and chores. Is there a schedule that is good for my puppy that would also help me maintain a balance with the other things I need to do? Or if I follow the schedule you recommended, how long should one be doing that to create a routine for the puppy? Thanks
We are happy that you're seeing progress. We have updated this video with some new suggestions regarding crate training. Please check it out here! ruclips.net/video/s0r-E3R3XT4/видео.html
As for the schedule, it's not really easy to move activities to different parts of the day due to very short wake windows and attention spans. So it's best to bring in extra help like a dog sitter if you are working or can't tend to the puppy. It won't be like this forever but young puppies need a lot of attention during this critical early age so they can grow and learn to live in a human world. As your puppy grows he'll be able to nap longer, hang out in his crate longer when you are busy and not need nearly as many potty breaks.
nice video thanks
“Let them cry it out” tried that cried for 4 straight hours. After being fed watered and exercised.
Knowing what is normal puppy fussing and what is panic will be important. We also have to work on this confidence outside of the time we need the puppy to use the crate. We do this with fun training games designed to create a positive association with the crate or pen. There are a few games you can check out in this video: ruclips.net/video/yC9h9jvRPQA/видео.html
(Crate training games start at 2:43)
My pomeranian puppy is 9 weeks. He just cries and barks all day. He is really stubborn. People say he is too young to train. If he's not chewing on the crate he's scratching on it. He tries hard to escape. How long should I leave him in the create at a time? How many times a day should I place him in the create in a day?
We started crate traing 2 days ago. Our dog is 5 mths old, she uses the paw to damage the bed, uses teeth to bite the crate, cries and whining. We ignored it and she slept after 30 mins. Hopefully, she will be familiar with crate asap.
It can definitely take some adjustment for some puppies to feel comfortable in their crate. This takes time, but mostly training! Hang in there! For more support, or specific questions, we'd love to have you in our Puppy Training with Michele Lennon Facebook group: howtotrainadreamdog.com/FB-group
My daughter is always sleeping with me and you snails are hurting my back my legs I love him so much but I don't know what to do to get them off he would not sleep if I don't put them in my bed what can I do

i just got a 3 month old puppy and he was not trained at all so i covered him and hes barking up a storm i used to give him treats and now i know thats not right im so tired i hope he learns
It takes time for a pup to transition into the new home. Hopefully with the tips in this video you will start to see some progress with the crate training.
This is years later…but any recommendations on stopping him from crying when im not able to have anything in the crate (like when im washing his bedding/towels?) i dont want him to soil another bed, and the only time he whines in the crate is when there’s no towel/bed in there with him
We recommend a second set of the bedding that he loves so he has something to soothe him when the first set is being washed.
I am curious since this video is a little later. I hear many conflicting information about the puppy stage. Like crying it out will damage their safe attachment during the first fee critical months. I have been trying to reinforce calm behaviour and make sure to gradually increase the distance I go away from the puppy. She does sleep in bed with us with the older dog, because honestly I'd rather have a sound few hours of sleep then a whining puppy. The older slept in bed the first year of is life and now he is also fine sleeping on a blanket on his own or on the couch alone.
I am wondering what your thoughts are on this! 😊i have been watching a lot of your videos lately and others too. I also think its sometimes best to go with your own gut feeling but that is still difficult. 😵💫
We applaud you for doing great research on this topic! You are right, canine science has been giving us new and improved information about the best way to help our puppies feel good in the crate. I understand training the puppy, but it's just been moved from all it's ever known to an unknown environment. Just like a human it would be scared and lonely. I would start crate training once it's gotten a little more used to its environment. A month or so. Still crate trainable.
So I should put our boy in the crate everyday not only when we leave the house? If so how long do you recommend?

do not make the puppy think it is a punishment , take a week off and make believe it is his little sanctuary, leave the door opened , put his blanket in , so , he think it it fun to go in the crate but you have to STAY home next to the opened crate it is a big task , and responsibility, I had multiple puppies an , dogs the past 45 years

Do we cover the crate only at night or during the day too
I have fostered puppies that had roundworms and passed it when they pooped. I would NEVER let a dog on my bed!!
I know right? That's disgusting. And their genitals are exposed, etc...
@@jenniferbeatty7545 lol but then u do understand that some people sleep naked, or do the nasty so their, ehem, parts, are exposed to the bed too.
Ik I would never it's disgusting because not only can the dog expose the human to something the human can expose the dog to something
We didn't yet have a crate the first 2 nights we've had her. She mostly sleeps all night (I'm up at 5:00 a.m. anyways in bed by 9:00) first two nights she slept in her doggy bed & would switch too her blanket on floor beside my bed. (She's really good about staying on the floor and not jumping up and stuff so far) amazing since she's only 6 weeks old! and now it's day three we have the crate I have to go to work this morning and she cried! like a cry I've never heard from a dog yes she's a husky but she's never cried for longer than a few seconds at a time. So now I didn't go to work and I'm going to start leaving the crate open while she out playing, then putting her in crate for few minutes at a time then slowly lengthening the time until she is comfortable in her crate ☺️ I only work 3 hours every morning and I want her to knows I'm coming back no matter how short/long I'm gone☺️ she's still so young and not used to being alone! so that is my first Target. good or bad idea??

Huskies are den dogs and tend to adhere to the crate as a safe and relaxing place. Our Siberian, Koda, naturally took to his crate without a whimper. We were so frustrated with our girl and her crate training. Your video was fantastic for showing what to do, and especially what NOT to do.
Our family thanks you!!! 😊
Jimmy, Carmen and our Mollie girl. 🐶
Glad it helped!
I am watching this while my puppy is crying in his crate. I feel guilty not taking him out.
Me too! Oh my gosh he’s very loud too!
@@ddsmiles6382 He is doing better with the training, and he stops as lays down and goes to sleep, but this is the first time I ever used a crate with a dog and I feel guilty.
Me too
Very very same
You should. You are a nasty human being for putting your puppy in a cage
I found that putting a blanket over the crate when its nightime works.
I call it "the magic blanket" 🙃
Yesss thats what I do & he knows its time to go to sleep
& we wont hear a sound from him!!
My first puppy did just fine with the blanket over the cage but my new pup is a barker and won't stop even with the blanket and I don't know what to do.
We did that for our GS puppy and 2+ months later, it still works.
@@shefkiabdu-rahmanbafti1331 Thats so great!!!@
Thank you for the Tips. I find out what I have missing.
Bedtime schedule:
1. tired the puppy out,
2. potty
3. no stimulation, dark
4. if the puppy is crying, no rewarding, let her cry out.
5. put on music
U got it beautiful
Hmm so it's like the olden days with babies - you let them cry out... No way that's healthy.
Simply have the puppy with you in bed or next to you and very slowly introduce the crate. 🐕🤗
@@MoneyStrategiesSOULutionsit’s a dog not a baby hope this helps
A puppy's cry can be annoying sometimes especially when they're inside the crate. So this video content just taught everyone how to solve the problem. :)
Annoying? I feel empathy 🙏
It's so reassuring seeing comments with everyone else experiencing the same thing. My girlfriend and I were at our wits end because we were worried that leaving our 3 month old border collie to cry it out would cause anxiety - but we've just watched this video and started his crate training in the early afternoon. Expecting a noisy night tonight but hopefully this pays off!
(We're also going to buy some ear plugs, chocolates and write a note for our neighbours :p)
So glad this video was helpful! We would also recommend this new one that we just released on getting your puppy to love their crate: ruclips.net/video/tSntLZUxvdI/видео.html
Meet all dog's needs prior to crating for the night (water, toileting etc), cover crate with blanket (allow for airflow, obviously) & place a Snuggle Pup toy with faux heartbeat activated (& heat pack if it's winter). Ignore cries/complaining at all costs, puppy will get the message before long.
I lay on a couch that he can’t see me on. I only do this because I have to wake up every 3 hours to let him out and it’s easier. He is 10 weeks old
My frenchie just sleeps all day I have to force him out lol 😂
Lucky tbh
Olivia Kwok as I read these comments he is sleeping lol 😂 I know I want to get another one so he’ll stop being so lazy sometimes
ElDe LaPalma if you do that he might be TOO energetic but you do you.
I wish I was in the same boat as you 😂
ElDe LaPalma I had 2 and loved watching them play. They tire easy because of breathing issues
Covering the crate with a towels/blanket really helped and the rest of the tips really helped!!! Thanks so much!
Glad it helped!
@@HowToTrainADreamDog When covering the crate with towels/blanket, should the crate door be closed or opened? Thanks
@@toshrodriguez1991 closed. It's after you put them in it..
the cover over the crate (in my home office) idea has been a big winner for my little black terror. puppy has even taken to the crate in my bedroom, so she now sleeps in there instead of on my bed (which wasn't yet an issue).
pretty big thing for her to accept both crates, in general, but especially for when she is able to get up onto my bed on her own. can't have a curious puppy roaming free in my room while i'm passed out.
there will come a day that i'll welcome this pup to sleep with me, but not until she's settled down.
very glad that i found this vid!!
Just admit it your up at night because your pups crying so just like me you came to RUclips lol
Update after a week. I have him in his kennel at night and cover his kennel up just enough so there’s still some fresh air ventilation inside. He’s 10 week old German Shepard. He has now used to his kernel and the whining and crying has stopped. !!
So good to hear this!
Thank you for the update! We are glad to hear that your pup has settled. Good job on covering the crate and leaving the ends open for ventilation.
My brother tires out our puppy and because of this she usually goes to bed without a fuss.
4 month old puppy (new to us) wouldn’t stop whining (first time in crate). Did this and we’re IMMEDIATELY grateful! THANK YOU!!!
Puppy calming sounds on YT, wide cardboard piece for crate top & old brown sheet. LIFE SAVER!
We are so glad it helped! We have recently updated this video with even more suggestions. Please check it out here: ruclips.net/video/s0r-E3R3XT4/видео.html
Omg, you’re a lifesaver!!! Our 3 month old puppy always whines and barks so INCREDIBLY loud when we’re not around!! And instead of giving her time alone we always gave her treats and stuff.. now that I’ve watched your video her barking stopped for a few minutes but now she just started again as I’m writing this. I’ll make sure to follow your guide, tysm! This helped me out a lot, it really did.

I understand the crying it out, but when it is so loud that it keeps the whole house up at night and it goes on for a VERY long time. My kids have school and I need them to get a good night sleep. I have tried so many of your suggestions and I don't know what to do anymore. At this point I am ready to pay someone or send him somewhere to get crate trained.
I think you need the dog to sleep in the same room as you so he sees you
I bought a Shih Tzu puppy a few days ago and he cried alot a few nights. But now he is getting better and better, he only cries once or twice at night when he needs to go to pee. He is a wonderful pup
If ur puppy cries at night, i hope it will get better!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Day 2 off having my 8 week old puppy and he has finally gone to sleep without crying. Last night was hell!!
Lol.
What did u do I have a 8 week old French bulldog and she’s crys
@@augustsmith5260 did yours ever stop crying ?
@@jessicalisrosa nope but we found out she only really cries when she either had to use it or is hungry
I wanna no the same thing
My only issue is the neighbors (I live in an apartment but not for long!) Stay strong, people! In the long run this is what’s best for EVERYONE!
Yea me too
Same here . It is annoying.hope he gets used to being on his own soon. Been on bed at night . Going to try crate in bedroom later, but I do not think it will stop him yapping.
I can’t let her cry it out, I live in an apartment. All these videos say the same thing
Actually we no longer recommend cry it out. It's not a healthy way to help the dog learn. We've updated our advice and have some more good info for you here: ruclips.net/video/s0r-E3R3XT4/видео.html
I know 😂
Wow. Just covered my 9 week old spaniels crate and put the music channel on. He whined for about 10 mins then passed out. Snoring his wee head off now. THANK YOU!
Only problem is the cats kept peeking round the cover to check on him 😂
This is such GREAT news! What an awesome turnaround for you and your puppy!
Not me at 4:12 AM tryna wait this out after taking him out to pee 😭 thought we were in the clear then BAM screaming bloody murder
SAME DUDE my dog bibo 7 weeks old HE IS SO LOUD 😀
@@Fel1c1t.y 2 months later, never thought we'd be where we're at today! He goes in his crate on his own and sleeps through from 10pm-7am. Power through, let him cry it out. What helped was gradually moving away. I started the first few nights next to his crate, then moved to the couch, then at the end of the week I was in my bedroom and he in his crate in the other room just fine.
@@vishalkathardekar8289 good to know, already a day later I was able to put one of my old shirts in and he is wayyy more calm since I did that! He does still whine right when he gets in but when he notices its safe in there he calms down :)
Sameeee me with my two month husky!! @6 in the morning
I see Crate time during the day. How long she we leave her in the crate? I see on the schedule crate time at 7:45am then outside at 9:45am and back in at 10am. And do we let her cry the entire time?
Umm idk???
Yea eventually it stops after a while..my husky pup cried for an hour
