As a retired teacher, I LOVE how articulate you are in explaining and demonstrating each step! Including the detailed instructions for the ladder stitch allowed me to complete my project with a finished look -- I had never mastered that skill because it was never shown to me so clearly. :-) My grandchildren are older and often read on their tablets or e-readers. So I made sure their electronic devices would fit in the pockets and will present the gift for that purpose rather than with just a book. Next time I think I may also personalize the pocket by adding a nick name or a quote about reading with an embroidery machine before assembly. Thanks a million for your inspiration and instruction!
Both of my parents are lefties and my siblings and I are all right handed - although I think I'm a confused right hander growing up with 2 lefties, I do a few things like a lefty. 🤪
Thank you so much for this video. You do a great job explaining this project. I think this reading pillow makes a wonderful gift for the children in my family. My sewing group also sews for a Safe House charity we support at Christmas. . These reading pillows will be perfect for the children that are there. ❤
I made 7 of these book pillows last December for grand- nieces and nephews age 2-7 for Christmas. They loved them. I included 2 of my children's favorite hardcover books in each. And some children size favorite snacks. I did reinforce the top of the book pocket and used a decorative stitch since bias binding can sometimes slip on the back. That way it was pretty and functional for stitching. My pillows were also 16 inches and I still get pictures with the children using them. Good for car trips for children. Great instructions.
How wonderful! I have my first grand-nephew who is currently 6 months old. He's getting the Quillow I did for that video but I'm sure a Reading Pillow will be in his future as well!
@@Kalaura It's a great ruler! If you want all the details in a printable pdf you can find it in my Etsy shop - etsy.me/3ZAF0Df Otherwise you want to cut two pieces of fabric 16½" x 13", hem a side on each and then use them as the back. Have fun!
Absolutely. You could also do an envelope back so the pillow can be removed and the cover cleaned (those directions are included in the pattern on Etsy)
It's called "Happy at Home" - you can ask your favorite quilt shop, online fabric shop, google or check Etsy (honestly, searching "Happy at Home Riley Blake" will probably get you more results than "Happy at Home Tara Reed") Glad you like it! There are 24 prints in the collection so lots to choose from!
Who will you make a reading pillow for first? Yourself, for gifts, to make & sell or do you have another idea?
You explain the steps so well. Thank you.
Thank you for your feedback - happy sewing!
What a fun project for book lovers of all ages. Thanks for another wonderful project Tara:)
You're very welcome - I have a few of these lined up for Holiday Gifts, pillow + book & done!

This is adorable! I just ordered that ruler! I’m not good with dimensions 😢 if I wanted to make an envelope back, what size fabrics would I cut? Ty!

@@ArtistTaraReed thank you so much! I am so excited for this ruler!
That’s perfect! I love this pattern! I have such trouble with my corners 🤨
I’m both and this pillow is a great idea. Thanks for sharing
You’re very welcome!
Great tutorial
thank you!
This is a GREAT idea!!
Thank you! They are always a hit as gifts 📚
Could a zipper be put into it
Absolutely. You could also do an envelope back so the pillow can be removed and the cover cleaned (those directions are included in the pattern on Etsy)
Lefty here. I am trying to find this fabric! Can you share where to find? Thank you for a great tutorial

Love this! Can be used for a tablet too!
for sure!
I’m a lefty and can’t cut at all with my right hand
Like my mom! My dad was a leftie but could cut with both hands I think…
Is bias tape just folded over cloth sewed over the edge of another piece of cloth?
The pocket has a front fabric and fusible fleece ironed onto the lining - then the bias tape goes over that.
is that a flat ironing board?
No - it's a tabletop ironing board with legs that fold up. The lighting at my big ironing board isn't great so I use this one when I can for videos.
thank you for your prompt reply. I just started making these book pillows. Love your video!@@ArtistTaraReed
@@acoghan You're very welcome! Who are you making them for? Always curious!
are you using a pillow form 12"x16 or 16x16"? The link brings you to the 12"x16"
Sorry about that! It's a 16x16" pillow form, I've updated the link 👉🏻 amzn.to/48R4fV6
Left!
Left handed here🇦🇺🤚
I've got a sweet spot for lefties ❤
I am a lefty
I’m a righty, my daughter is a lefty, my granddaughter is ambidextrous 🤷🏼♀️
You've covered all the bases! 🥰
Left handed.
like both my parents! My dad SOOOO thought my son was going to be a leftie but alas... all the grands are right handed too
