I know it's been four years since you posted this, but I hope you are still reading the comments. I am a reading tutor for second grade students and I have made one of these for each of the three girls I've tutored for the last three years. It's a wonderful end-of-the-year gift for them and I always include a book with the pillow -- one that has a special meaning for each of them. Their eyes always light up when they see me pull this pillow out of my big bag. Thank you for making this easy to follow tutorial!!
OMG! How you inserted the pillow was pure genius! The hardest part of making a pillow cover is getting the darn pillow in. Love your channel and will make this reading pillow for my 4 grandchildren. Many, many thanks.
Fantastic tutorial! Thank you for taking time to explain and show the steps rather than rush through them. I'm off to order fabric and pillow inserts for 4 reading pillows for my grandkids! 😁❤️
Brilliant tutorial! I find some simple, beginner sewing videos to be quite condescending but you explained everything clearly with some brilliant tips! I'm going back to sewing after about 15 years so feel like I'm back at the beginning again. This is probably the best book pillow tutorial I've watched. Thank you!
I just wanted to thank you for your excellent teaching style. I've just begun to sew after 30 years - (raised kids). I've made 6 of these pillows as gifts to my great nieces, nephews & 3rd cousins! My current pillow will be for my very own (and first) granddaughter!!! Thank you again. You're a true blessing. Sewing from Conyers, GA USA.
Could watch your sewing all day long......Stuart you are entertaining , clever , very helpful n make the project your doing easy to follow . Thankyou. From WA...Australia. ❤
You make it look so effortless and easy. Thanks for sharing ... as a novice with a sewing machine you've made me believe I could actually do that .... I am inspired... : )
Thank you so much Stuart. Your voice is so calming and it may be the FIRST video I didn't fast forward through to the end. Your work is beautiful and you have thoroughly explained the directions. I can't wait to make mine~!!
Thank you for this lovely gift idea Just wondering what size cushion insert will it fit? And if I have an IKEA 50x50 cushion/pillow using FQ’s will the pillow be too big Thanks heaps
Thank you for such a clearly explained tutorial. I am an experienced seamstress (started to say "sewer," until I realized it's spelled the same way as a plumbing sewer🤢), but it's always helpful to have clear instructions and cutting dimensions. You've got the wheels of my head turning to possibly make some of these to send on a mission trip to Mexico. I'm making over 50 pillowcases for some ladies there. I've considered making travel size pillowcases for the children. Instead, I may modify this tutorial to fit a rectangular travel size pillow so it might be a bit more practical for them to sleep on, if they choose to use it that way.
I absolutely adore this project! I made one for my 7 year old and 3 for my brothers children. You have the most tranquil voice, and your choice of words are delightful! I’m extremely new to sewing and not once did I become frustrated or felt that you had left me behind. Your speed was perfect and the dialogue you entered made it entertaining. So, in a nutshell, educational, relaxing, entertaining, and productive. I thank you for this opportunity! And the kids LOVE the pillows!
Thank you for your clear instructions. I am a great grandma and have been asked to make book pillows for great grandkids. Such fun and so glad I am still able to sew. Just need the encouragement from this video. "85" and still sewing.
Great project but the real gem was the tip on putting the cushion pad into the envelope cover. Genius! I can’t believe I’ve never thought of this. Thank you.
This was my first sewing project. I made it for my daughter. You did such a wonderful tutorial and explained every detail so precisely. I am so pleased with how my pocket pillow turned out! Thank you so much!
If you have a favorite tree yo sit under And your sewing projects, then you are such a lucky person. Thanks so much for that wonderful video. I've made three as of today & just about to start one for a friend's little son who likes to read. Thank you Stuart.
Absolutely loved this video. You made me feel welcome and fully able to make the project. Great tips and love the little aside comments too :) Looking forward to more projects. Thank you.
Just made four of these for my grandkids, following your wonderful tutorial. I watched several videos, before I got started. Yours, is by far, the best. I did use my embroidery machine and added a little saying on the pocket and then added their names at the top. Thank you so much for sharing with us!
I have just made two of these lovely cushions for my great niece and nephew, 5 and 3, for Christmas presents. They love anything made by Auntie Helen. Thank you Stuart for easy to follow and precise instructions for this project.
Two book cushion covers made in less than two days. Thank you for the inspiration. My grand-boys will love these for Christmas as a year long gift from their Nana. I divided the book pocket so it is large enough to hold a drink bottle or a box of pencils.
A book pillow is an excellent project! Your videos are very pleasant to watch and your instructions are very clear and concise! You have an ability to make the viewer feel confident that they can do your projects. Well done and please do continue.🤗🤗🤗👍🇨🇦
I just made this lovely book pillow for a dear friend who is undergoing chemo. She now has a comfy pillow to take along and a pocket for a book and snacks. Thank you for such a clearly explained tutorial. It was a pleasure to sew along with you! You explained each step clearly and in a calm voice. Love your videos!
Enjoyed the tutorial of the Book Pillow😊😍 I saved this video to my Favorites I have a pillow cushion to use for the project.😀Than you so much for sharing😍🤩
Another fabulous video given in such a calming friendly manner that it makes me feel able to achieve this, thank you so much Stuart for taking the time to share this tutorial, can not wait to try this xxx
Oh Stuart what a wonderful tutorial you explain everything so we'll do you have more of these type of tutorials as I am not a quilter but am hoping to improve my sewing with smaller projects keep up the good work hugs kisses and blessings x x x
Lovely tutorial. I enjoy the sound of the scissors just as you said. It’s as lovely as the crunch of stepping on deep overnight snow. It’s a quiet thrill.
Great Tutorial Stuart! Thank You ❤️-You made it very clear and concise and I do believe that I am confident enough to create this also! Have a great weekend! XX Marie-Wisconsin
Stuart Hillard I made it and I absolutely loved it! Your tutorial was by far the best I have seen. Very easy to follow and not a bit of detail was left out. Thank you Sir.
I so loved this project. I adore the fabric pattern as well. I have saved this video so I can try this project as future presents for my kids and grandchild. They are all avid readers.🥰 I have since made 6 of these pillows for Christmas gift.
I was looking for a tutorial just like this. Thank you. Please make more sewing tutorials that are not quilts. I would love to see some totes and other bags. :) What size pillow did you use? Any tips of sizing the fabric for different pillow sizes?
What a great gift idea. Also would be great for shelters. I think kids would love to have something of their own that they could put some of their things in to keep.
I was never any good at sewing at school, many years ago, used to take me a lesson to thread the sewing machine!! Not joking. Decided it is time to master this skill, and Stuart, wish there was someone like you way back when, when I was at school. You explain things so easily. Got a freebie sewing machine and was looking for projects for beginners and found you......OMG. You make the projects sound so easy. It has taken me quite a few hours to make the book pillow but I love it, and am given them to family members. They aren't bad even if I do say so myself. Thank you for taking the fear away from this subject and explaining this clearly and simple. Looking to make the Japanese Rice bag next. Thank you thank you
Thank you for a chirpy cheery tutorial. Enjoyed it immensely love you talk faster but able to be informative at that speed without me losing track of where you are going. I got all the stages done ( or so I thought). Today proceeded to sew. Didn't overlock till I checked right side out was as is should be and seams caught all fabric. Ironed it and thought how lovely. Then I saw my mistake. No handle. So sneaky me marked where it needed to go, unpicked only that section of seam then popped in handle sewed it in and reinforced BEFORE I rechecked right side. In my unpicking I had pulled out edge of one of the backing hemmed pieces. But now I was already adept at unpicking and realized I only needed to undo stitching where back section out. The overlocking in place held the rest of seam in place for me still allowing space to slip that turned edge back into side seam. The unpicking reinforces the need to check and double check next time around. **Can you tell us what fleece interfacing you would recommend for this project please. ** I went to use normal polyester wadding pieced together but it was way too thick I had some quilting fleece but opted to use iron on polyester fleece used in bags. It cost more than fleece no doubt but I purchased it to make bags using a specific pattern that alas was very badly done with link to video long dead and instructions possibly translated on line to English before printing out. If you can't read English you can't check the translation and I ended up with metres of fabric and fleece unable to be used till now. Now I can create book pillows for charity and possibly for family too. Thank you for your smiling face, your tips and checks and double checks along the way. You are an excellent tutor.
@@conniecrotts591 I made a 16”by16” and I stuffed it with poly-fil. Then yesterday I tried to make The envelope pillow but it didn’t work right on the back . I will try that one again.
Thanks Stewart! Love the idea for faux binding. As always, great clear and easy to follow instructions from you! I enjoy and learn from all your videos. 😉
What! Flip the flap over? Be still my heart. Thank you for the tip. I love the pattern and I'm going to make it for all my grands for Christmas next year. I've got about 11 of them. ❤❤❤🤪
Finally made this today for a granddaughter. Your instructions were spot on. Easy to follow tutorial. I have been missing new posts from you. I hope all is well! Thanks again for the fun tutorial.
Love this tutorial and your fabric but thank you so much for sharing the tip on getting the cushion pad in not seen that before makes it look easier and it's neater too 😊 😊
A great tutorial. One of the best and very well explained on how to make a book pillow. Like the added handle and being able to take the cover off the pillow.
Stuart , love your videos . Never seen a man do sewing projects. I just recently found your channel and even If I don't make anything , I like watching you.

Amazing! My handle ended up a tad off center because I used a clip and it came off during sewing. I recommend following the instructions for basting the handle down. Love Stuart's style. Fantastic teaching skills. Thank you!
