That 6 chime reminds me so much of the one it had in the early 90s. So glad a great sounding 6 chime is back on the 1702. Ether though it was swapped for a Southern 5 chime.
This is the only standard-gauge operational steam locomotive I have ever ridden on or seen (I have ridden on a narrow gauge loco in central Alabama). I saw it on October 15th a couple days back, and I rid on it twice, in I want to say 2019 and 2020. Great engine, definitely looking forward to the 722 coming back in 2026👍
Admittedly an avid player of Railroader, which is based on the Murphy Branch as it existed back in the old days, so it's neat to see the real locations.
That whistle sounds like it should...thats a tone you want to hear going thru them mountains and valleys...its big loud and proud like a Baldwin Army unit should be...shes old but shes a runner ❤and thst issue is more the camera mic 🎤 then the whistle
Fun to see this pop up in my recs! I was just up there in July, just a week after 1702 was brought out for the 2024 steam season C: absolutely stunning to see her run!
@Great smoky mountains RailFan I like your museum of the Lionel trains I love the train museum you got I am a big fan of your railroad because I love the trains you have
What group are you talking about? I know there’s a motor car excursion service out of Andrews but I haven’t heard of one that wants to extend train service back to Murphy.
@@greatsmokymtnsrailfan I did not know of a motor car operation out of Andrews, but it makes sense as the track from Nantahala to Andrews is plenty good for motor cars. The crest of the grade is at Topton under the highway bridge over the track. Just east of the bridge was the switch connection to the side track and the connection to the old Graham County RR to Robbinsville which was operated with Shays. It had a grade of 6% up out of the Nantahala Gorge. My wife and I stopped at the Bear Creek Central which operated a tourist train on part of the Graham County RR in 1971 while we were on our honeymoon. I think there are 2 tunnels between Topton and Andrews. I am positive of one.
5 star rating. Im a huge steam train fan and have seen alot of videos and this one was phenomenal. Loved the narration history lesson. The music was cool 2. I liked and subscribed and hit the bell. God loves you
I just got this recommended. Nice to see less popular engines, especially steam engines. I want to build scale ones one day, ideally as a business, but we will see if that ever comes to light.
Now this is the class of loco that I’ve seen before and they’re incredible giants of the rails compared to the shutter (switcher) S100 class tank. As most S160s on the UK are coal fired, there one that is about to be converted into oil fired on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Can’t wait to experience a standard gauge oil fired steam locomotive in action when 2253 Omaha is in operation next year.
I’d love to hop across the pond and see more S160’s in their British form. They’re such a cool locomotive. I’d also love to see an S100 while I’m at it. While oil firing has its benefits, I say enjoy the coal while you can. Nothing like the cinders and smoke from a coal burner. Maybe when Omaha returns I’ll go and see it.
Thank you! The crew does a really good job at making sure she’s clean. Sad that’s there’s no running S160s in Poland, though I hope you can see the ones in the U.K.
GSMR is a 6-hour drive each way for me. Any idea how often they do the turntable demonstration? Their website just says "select days" but no indication on how to figure out which days they may be. Tried contacting GSMR for clarification and got conflicting info. Would like to have a chance of having luck before committing to a 12-hour round trip plus getting a hotel for at least 1 night.
From what I’ve heard they’ve faired a lot better than other places, and I think they have the ability to run trains because I heard about them sending out some rescue trains.
From what I’ve heard it’s not necessary for them to run passenger trains that far. If they were to get back into freight I think they would definitely consider bringing trains back to Andrews though.
I was referring to the entire operating railroad that is currently in service. Nantahala to Andrews is out of service for trains, but Nantahala to Dillsboro is in service, and 1702 ran over the entirety of it that day.
I think the reason they did it was for safety reasons. From what I’ve been told double beam headlights are a lot brighter than a single beam headlight, which is good for night time operations. Thats why they did it to US Sugar 148 at least. I prefer the single beam headlight as well, but I don’t mind the double beam too much.
Stop. Just stop. There were steam locomotives with dual beams even in the steam era. There’s no “real steam engine original way” because the industry was constantly innovating.

That was a great one. Really enjoyed this after playing so much railroader.
