The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is among one of the most popular tourist railroads in the country, based out of the quaint town of Bryson City, North Carolina and noted for its scenic excursions through the Appalachians. Operating for 35 years over the former Murphy Branch of the Southern Railway, the railroad currently hosts excursions between the towns of Dillsboro to the northeast and Nantahala to the northwest. Alongside a fleet of respectable second generation diesels, the GSMR also operates ex-United States Army Transportation Corps S160-Class 2-8-0 "Consolidation" #1702, built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1942 at the height of World War II. Locomotive 1702 stars in this video at the head end of the Nantahala Gorge Excursion, operating between Bryson City and Nantahala over a distance of 22 miles through the kudzu-covered hills, valleys, and gorges of the Great Smokies. Now, please enjoy this exciting video featuring the sights and sounds of steam through the Nantahala Gorge in this video brought to you by Blue Comet Productions!
This video was filmed on August 2nd and 3rd, 2023.
