It would be cool for me to visit the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad to see their Great Smoky Mountains Railroad 1702 (Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in September 1942).
Wow. We lived there for 21 years. The train used to be so much better. Parking was free. No one trying to sell you anything. And you rode on one side going to Nantahala and you switched sides coming back. That way everyone got to see both sides. We lived by Fontana Lake. Oh well. Things change. Thanks for the updates. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
Carolina Tony, Hi there!! Went on The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad yesterday. The weather was beautiful for the ride. I went with a group (tour) and I can tell you the coach seats are too cramped!! The group booked everyone in the Southland car. 2 people sit & 2 people on the other side. So its like 4 people sitting in a booth but with no table & definately no leg room. And I also found out that the open car with the bench; tkts have to be purchased for that also. No seats available. So going to the Nanahala Gorge I mostly stood in the open car. I would definatley go again, but I would have to upgrade to the dining car you and Ms Debbie had, LOL!! Thanks again for the info on the train.
Thank you for the ride CAOLINA TONY! Took our kids on it 30+ years ago. Took a break from tubing Deep Creek tubing.. Great to see it still in action. Good times.
Wife and I just did this trip. We were in the open air, Nantahala car. We had seats on the right side of the train for the trip out but our guide had everyone swap sides for the return trip. It was great fun and the food was great. Our guide, Steven, went the extra mile to serve and was a wealth of information and jokes. Made the ride that much better! The tickets still include free entrance to the railroad museum too.
My son just moved to Clover SC on lake Wiley. Can’t wait to visit him and ride the rails. Thanks for this video Tony good job. You must have been an engineer- very detailed indeed!!
Thank you for sharing this Mr. Tony! I just booked us a cabin in October to Bryson City. I wanted to book us a ride on the train but there's so many options. Now I have a better idea. Thanks for the tips! ❤ to you and Mrs. Debbie
My wife has her family name on a building at Western Carolina U. Her high school classmate and competitor has her name on the tiny town of Dillsboro. In the 60s their school was tiny and belonged to WCU, a college that owned the k-12 right in the middle of the college. Both girls were remarkably successful. Their whole class was successful. But the girls stood out. My girl is gone now after 60 years of delight. The girl whose name is on the town I have lost track of. I think they enjoyed the competition.
I’ve never been on a train ride. It’s on my bucket list so your tips might come in handy because this is one I wanted to ride when I lived in Asheville, and I still want to ride it. Thanks for sharing this with us 👍💕😊
If you like "Tex-Mex" food... there's a great Mexican restaurant not too far away in Bryson City called "Guayabitos"! I highly recommend it!! Nice atmosphere & GREAT FOOD @ affordable prices!!!
@@shelwhitley1011 Exactly! Kayakers need to practice "righting themselves" in situations where their kayaks are overturned. It's called a "kayak roll". Ideally the kayaker remains in the kayak though!! On the other hand... the kayakers may have been attempting to "stand their kayaks vertically" [without flipping over]!? It's a type of "kayak stunt"!
We took the trip about 10 years ago. Wonderful experience. Tony left out a few things, unless the times have changed. We booked an 1880's car which included first class food and service by a waiter with towel on his arm, a moonshine tasting, and included entrance into the train museum at the end. Do they still offer that? If so, book it.
This was a great video Carolina Tony; thank you for providing such needed and valuable information. What's the cell coverage like in the trip? Is there WiFi?
That is actually the old murphy branch it was not built for the construction of the biltmore house. It was completed in 1894 after the biltmore house and was built as a branch line connecting the southern railway to the L&N at murphy which created a connection from Atlanta to Asheville. The line was west of Sylva was purchased by the NCDOT in the 90s or early 2000s and leased to the great Smokey mountain railroad. Everything east of Sylva was operated by Norfolk southern until 2014 when it was sold to the blue ridge southern. Also that passenger car was not built for Amtrak in the 40’s. Amtrak was created by the government in 1971 to consolidate the nations failing passenger service
It’s possible that they may have misconstrued some of the information, I’m not sure. The railroads did have to donate a portion of their passenger equipment as part of the agreement to start Amtrak so it’s very likely that the cars were used by Amtrak and maybe the line was used help to build the house.
We left Pigeon Forge three hours early to go to the Railroad in Bryson City, the road across the mountain, Hwy 441 was closed thirty minutes before we got to it, the workers told us, we had to go around the mountain, we only had twelve minutes to spare when we arrived. Will never do that again, not worth the stress, LOL.
Thank you so much for this train ride & the tips. I have been wanting to ride this train for awhile but I needed some up to date info on riding. At the hour stop at the Nanahala gorge is that where anyone can buy souvenirs?
@@CAROLINATONY And sort of "pricey" too! Maybe save that for another trip -- if you actually take trip down the Nantahala River. I highly recommend it! They have something they call "funyaks" [or at least they used to have them]!! They are basically one-person inflatable kayaks. But a guided trip is fine too, especially if you've never been rafting before!?
Trying to follow your tips Tony! When you said book on the left, you were in seat g - were you on the left? For more views? It’s difficult trying to look at the seats on the website!
How do you know which side of the train is left when you are booking the seats? Can I assume the train is heading West and you should pick the seats on the lower part of the diagram of the train car to be on the left side of the train? BTW is the train museum tour still included with your ticket purchase?
I wish I wouldn’t make videos about the train there’s too many people coming to Brarson city now growing up in a small town in Bryson City it’s not like it used to be it’s not the small town as I grew up in I wish It could go back like it used to be very little people running around town
True. I think people have made comments like those for THOUSANDS OF YEARS, as "civilization" continued to creep in around them. Unfortunately... it's part of "progress". I like modern advances like the internet -- but also yearn for simpler times as well. Fond memories of youth are something to cherish, and pass along as part of our "heritage". Much of Carolina is worthy of mention, and the people of our state are generally TREMENDOUS! No wonder people are moving here!! [I kind of don't like that -- but... should we blame them???]
Right. It just doesn't tell me what side was the front when buying my tickets. I just guest and it's a 50 50 chance at this point. Thanks for all the great tips though!
@@thedmv84 I think I remember the top being the good side. Keep in mind if you are getting 2 tickets get them separately so you can grab both the window seats. I didn't do that and they put people in the other 2 seats directly across from me even though they didn't buy those seats

What a fun adventure, I love trains and beautiful scenery!! Great tips!! Thank you Tony and Debbie!! Happy Friday to you both!!
My brother used to live about a mile away from there, and still isn't too far away. I'm going to have to go for a ride sometime when I'm visiting.
Thanks for the video and tips - in the midst of planning a trip to Bryson City & this helps with the train decisions.

When you do the Great Smoky Railroad from there you may pass the train wreckage from the movie The Fugitive!!!

Thank you so much for watching and subscribing. Next month we are embarking in a 5000 mile cross country trip lots to see and do
That railroad is now where near the house. There is a spur from Asheville yard to the house. This railroad connection to Seaboard air line to Atlanta.

I just walked by there just a few minutes ago
I use to volunteer NCTM in Spencer,NC.

Well I guess the person announcing all the information over the PA was not telling the truth.
I looked it up the silver was from the 1958 Era. It wad used by Amtrac. So it wax in service for a long time and is one of GSMR's newer cars

Wow! Thanks for the historical corrections!! Tony probably unknowingly passed along erroneous information that was provided to him at some point!?
Hey you made a review on Bucees and you said you would do a review on the Bucees nuggets. Do you think you could do that?🤠🤔
I have. 2 of them here is one. ruclips.net/video/goZOuxLfdKo/видео.html

When you say right side.. I’m looking online and I’m looking at the train car. Should I book the top rows or bottom rows?
Hi I am wondering the same thing did you figure it out?
It's june and 95F . Is it still cold on the train? Was worried being so hot tomorrow the train would be scorching
Trying to follow your tips Tony! When you said book on the left, you were in seat g - were you on the left? For more views? It’s difficult trying to look at the seats on the website!
We were on the left side of the train facing forward. Like the drivers side of a car
They now gave everyone swap seats when you get to the midpoint so everyone gets to see each side
Me reading everything trying to figure it out… lol
Cool!
Lol thats for watching
Thanks
Great video
Very informative
Glad you think so!
Amtrak was founded in the 70s the Silver star is built in the 40s.
Left looking at front of train or rear
How many days are you on the train when you get to pigeon Forge?
When buying tickets, it says east and west not left and right. Witch side would be the left???
Do they play music on the train ?

On the Nantahala run. If it were an automobile it would be the driver's side
Did you figure this out? I’m currently wanting to book. Do I book on top or bottom?
@@thedmv84 bottom
A lot like riding amtrak
That bridge looks so rusted. Next great catastrophe 😮😮😮😮😮😮
😎
how do we know which side is the left side with the superior view when booking?
What song do you use in your video
The kayaker sare surfing and playing in that rapid. They are doing that they meant to do
Looked like a lot of fun
Bring a blanket, too! It was so cold I couldn't relax at all.

Looks fun, I think the only train I have been on was at Disneyland 😅
😀😁😉

I rode on the train in April. It was an enjoyable ride with only 9 people in our car. Also purchased box lunch, and it was fresh and good.
Sounds fun
How long is the ride ?
That one was 4 hours
Going
