SO WELL DONE AND SAID…THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS WONDERFUL & BEAUTIFUL VIDEO…I AM PROUD AND THANKFUL THAT WE NOW CALL TENNESSEE OUR HOME NOW… AFTER A LIFETIME OF BEING IN MIAMI FLORIDA WE FINALLY HAVE COME HOME THE PLACE WE WERE MEANT TO BE…WE THANK OUR LORD FOR BRING US HERE…HOME AT LAST🙏❤️👍🇺🇸
I just watched this on my local PBS station. Brought back great memories of this area. My Aunt and cousin lived in Robbinsville and we've ridden the trains many times over the years. My uncle worked building the Fontana Dam . Beautiful land and people. Take both trains to experience all of the splendor and history of it. Great time of the year to be there. Happy Easter to all!
I bought an excursion trip for my brother and I to celebrate his 50th birthday 🎂 What a memorable experience. My grandfather was an engineer for Clinchfield until he retired. I love this video about my Appalachian heritage. God bless you all🙏🏻❤️🕊
Trey Jordan I am from Sevier County. I love the beautiful Smokey Mountains. I am proud to call Tennessee my home and proud to call North Carolina our neighbor state.
this comment goes to all the dedicated men and women who made great scenic railway journeys one of my favorite film series and one that deserved and still deserves every reward given to it and i salute everyone who helped and still helps to make it possible
Rode the Nantahala River Gorge excursion this past Sunday, great trip, dinner on train was fantastic. Planning on going back this August for the Tuckasegee River Excursion.
i have a film about this railroad on dvd titled the back of beyond and it included two other films : tracks through time and the third film was about a Denver and Rio grande steam locomotive being restored
My husband and I used to ride the GSMR nighttime dinner train at least once a year. Several years they used the last locomotive from The Fugitive. We have since moved to Missouri, but I'd sure like to do it again. I'm sure the locomotive has long since been retired. I hope they've been able to restore it somehow. For a long time, The Fugitive has been one of their biggest attractions.
6:13 Tony Franklin was fireman on my cab ride on #1702 who gave me permission to put sand in the flues, initate the water injectors, keep an eye on the boiler pressre and water level, check down the tracks, sweep the cab floor and even do some bell ringing during our maneuver at the NOC. I did the $450 steam cab ride so I could get an extra two hours of boiler observation credit for my steam training at Hocking Valley Scenic Railway with our #3.
I rode the GSMR train last week and definitely agree that riding in the open air car gives you the best experience. Then I got to see 1702 the steam engine train in person and run down the tracks, it was the highlight of my trip.
I hope to take this ride one day. My son and I have talked about it many times. As a child I rode the Illinois Central between Chicago and Carbondale, IL many times (before Amtrak so I am dating myself!). I loved riding the trains. This year needs to be the year I "just do it." Thanks for the video.
@@gmitchell91 Cool! I was born in Carbondale. Went to Carbondale Community High School Freshmen year before moving back up to Chicago. The last time I was there was 1978. Probably wouldn't even recognize the city today. Have a great day
@Great Scenic Railway Journeys please post the "Thunder In The Alleghenies" please please please. Western Maryland Scenic Railroad just restored a steam engine and I can't find this episode anywhere! Only for sale on VHS tape from not so known websites.
They should organise something like a trip from East to West.. Every time connecting to nice routes like this one... See it as a cruise but over land..
I haven't been here for years the last time I visited the gsmrr was in 2008 at the model railroad i'd like to go back there again and I hope the 1702 returns again
+J M Overman that's awesome glad that 1702 is coming back I got to see it and I also can't wait for the 611 to come in April thank you for the information (I was wondering when the engine was going come back)
+The Creepernator that's more great news I think nc is having train activities for 2016 the local train came last week and is coming back in the fall the 611 coming in April (don't know where the engine will be but I'm guessing in the outer part of the rail yard) and now the 1702 is coming back after eleven years I just wonder what else is yet to come
Isn't there a section of the railroad that has a 4% grade on it, likely, somewhere around Topton? (I read something the NS''s "Murphy Branch" in TRAINS Magazine way back then, where two engines were needed to pull a train only seven boxcars long.)
This one of the reazons why i hate removal of those salutes and blocking people form viewing shows like roots. History needs to lived and remembered. in fact i herd that the iedan's used in the movie Dances With Wolfs fellt more connected to who they where after doing that movie since they had to leran to live as they did in the time.
Jesus this story took a dark turn regarding those lost men with the barge flip. Totally get its part of the history but the tears of their weeping souls probably could have been passed over from this since it looks like it's mainly directed for young families to bring their children.
Stevo B. We are sorry if you feel this not proper for the program. It is a documentary for adults and information provide by historians to tell the story.
Is there a reason for setting apart the Tennessee and North Carolina sides? I mean, uhm... we have no love lost. . Why do you act so biased? A state line makes you thínk this way? That's the way your attitude comes off as.
Nothing but love for all of the black men who were forced to build the Smokey Mountain Railway.

This is one of the major reasons why I'm proud to call North Carolina my Home.
I couldn't agree anymore. I love North Carolina.
Amen :)
Same here. We've since moved to Missouri to take care of my aging mother-in-law, but I'd sure like to go home one day.

Ahhh, nothin better than the sounds of a harmonica and the hum of the 567 prime mover together in harmony.
If you have not been on this train and been in western North Carolina you have not had fun. Another way to enjoy it.
i rode the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad when was in elementary school and i rode for the last time when i in high school before my graduation

Thanks for this wonderful upload. Looking for to seeing more in the future. :)
Love the shots of 1702
What I want to know is how did they get the railroad to let the film on the diesel?
I get to ride in #1702's cab this year!
Unbelievable! There must have been two dozen people in that crowd!
Climb on board The Great Smokey Mountain Railroad.
Just this past year I was able to actually ride the rails here! I spent a few hundred hours swinging sledges to pin the new lines down.

Only some people would recognize that the train he was riding on was triple 7. The same name given to the one from Unstoppable.
triple 7 is scrapped in 2022.
I have rode Nantahala twice and Dillsboro One time
