Awesome video! Glad you love the Sd24s, they are a beauty!! Enjoyed double heading the mighty 544 with the Southern 542, was a fun time! Keep up the amazing work and thank you for the shout!!
Thanks man!! Definitely enjoying the SD24s! Also had a really fun time with the doubleheader, can’t wait to do it again! You’re welcome for the shoutout, anytime!
There's 2 SOU consolidations running right now, those being 401, and 630. 154 is out of service and her future is unknown (In terms of operating again). 722 will be restored eventually, and maybe, just maybe, if we keep hoping, there's always a small possibility that 542 will also steam again. So best case scenario there will eventually be 5 operating SOU consolidations. Will that happen? I kind of doubt it, but only time will tell.
@@greatsmokymtnsrailfanI always think it is interesting how two of every class of Southern’s 2-8-0’s are preserved (except 542 and the I class 2-8-0’s that are relatively unknown).
Would be nice if NCTM would get one of their steamers running since they sold the #4. Even if it was just their Shay. 542 and 544 would be the best ones in my mind, but I've also heard 544 has a cracked engine bed or something, and I'm not sure if 542 is in good enough condition to be operationally restored.
Yeah I really wish we could see steam at Spencer again. I think 544 and 542 were really worn out during their careers, which is probably why they didn’t consider them for restoration in the past. But anything is possible with time, money, and manpower.
544 I believe is a former Gainesville Midland decapod and originally the one that was supposed to be sent to Russia but i could be wrong@@greatsmokymtnsrailfan
I wish lol. Seriously though, it would cost more compared to other engines, but if Spencer were to restore one of the “bigger” engines on the property, 542 would be the one. Unfortunately I don’t think the cost of such a restoration is in NCTM’s budget right now, but anything is possible.
I was at the train show too of course
I would lovew to see it run again on it's own. 65 years ago I use to play on that engine when I was a kid wnen it was on display at Tanglewood Park.
Same here. Very cool!

They really should get 542 running again. She’d attract more patrons that way.
Agreed! A conductor told me that sometime in the future
542 will be bought to the YVRR
But it would be years
Would also be cool if they could get the shay running again but that's not going to happen
@@Robertmitchell2121Will be brought to where?
@@HoboJoe-tr1tm yakin valley railway but it could be years
@@Robertmitchell2121 What and where is the Yadkin River Valley and why are they moving 542 to there?

How many Southern Railway Consolidations is that now? At least 4 and will be 5 with 722?

@@RailPreserver2K Correct, was originally supposed to go to Russia, then got sold to SAL, then sold to Gainesville Midland.
Would they consider doing a operational restoration of 542?
