Mean things to a cop and he’s got sensitive feelings? He made a stupid mistake and he’s got to learn. The value he should get out of the whole thing is now he knows the Canadian drivers license is valid in the USA.
It's more complicated then Canadians with Canadian driver's license. While it is legal for Canadian tourists to drive in the US on their Canadian driver's license, it is not legal once they relocated to the US. In California, you have 10 days to obtain a California DL if you relocate into California, REGARDLESS of your country of citizenship. THAT'S WHY the first question the officer asked him was what he was doing in California. And rather than answering that simple question, the driver chose to be a smartass and told the office it was not his business. Well IT WAS. The officer was trying to determine if you had relocated to California for the purpose of your driver's license!!!!! And since you were making monetized content in California, the officer can reasonably suspect that you did indeed live in California, thus subjecting you to the 10-day rule to obtain a California driver's license.
BTW, if you are truly a Canadian tourist on a tourist visa, it is arguable that you worked without authorization by making monetized RUclips content in the US. And, hope you have filed California tax return for the monetized content you filmed in California, since you are a big RUclips Channel. I think California tax board may want to know about you.

Charges are NOT dropped. He just trying to make sure you don't deal with it so you have an outstanding ticket so you can't drive in the end. Don't just go off a verbal from the officer.

Dear Damon, long time follower, but never really post anything, so here we go.
As an Emergency Physician, I have dealings with police officers all the time and over the years I have realized there are basically 3 types of officers.
Type 1, This officer is by the book, they usually never intentionally violate your rights, this cop will check his books and computer before making a judgment if unsure.
Type 2, This officer is the type that does not rock the boat, he will avoid problems as much as possible, if he see's one of his coworker doing something illegal, he won't do anything about it, nor will he testify unless he has his departments backing.
Type 3, this officer is the kind you want to avoid, he is looking to bust heads, this kind of officer is the kind that will escalate instead of deescalating, this is the kind of officer that fears the camera, and will behave somewhat when a camera is shoved in his face, but he will never admit he was wrong and without a camera will make up shit to piss you off.
This officer you encountered is a Type 3 without a doubt, the camera you had is what slowed him down, your complaint is what put him in his place.
As to your question, did the complaint do anything....yes it did, they just didn't tell you!

I've had a lot of police interactions and I've only once gotten officer number 3, thankfully. Lots of nice cops out in my area, the State troopers are the ones you want to look out for in NY, they always seem like they've got something to prove but I haven't had a -horrible- interaction with them yet.
This incident happened around the time of the big ruckus on Rodeo Drive where BHPD Officers were hit by that idiot with exploding fireworks. Of course the cops are going to be pissed for a while, what else would you expect?
So true and the funny thing is their psyche profiles (which I used to be privy to) indicate which type they will be, but no vetting is typically done on that point. That said, be careful in LA, there is a mean strain of that authoritarian head buster type that still persists.
Damon - Can you clue us in on the rules up in Canada? I have made the run up there a few times and had some "fun" out in the back roads but would love to know what happens if you get caught at excessive speed there. (I always planned to play dumb yankee and just say I though the sign was in MPH).

I've run into all 3 types you mentioned. But I've also met the occasional cop that's really down to earth and laid back. He'll let small stuff slide. But will stand up for what is right when it comes down to it. They may be rare but I believe they're some of the best officers & they're very effective in doing their job and interacting with the public.

The cop has a radio. The cop could call his supervisor to make sure of the law. But cops don’t like to admit that they may be wrong, so they will make you waste your time and money to go to court in hopes you will just pay the fine.

Hey, the police radio is not used for that, but a phone call would have been good. Every officer out there has a supervisor back at the station.
Nah... the is no way he didn't understand the law... this was all harassment. There is no way that any officer could possibly believe that everyone, even visitors from out of state, are required to have a California license. How could tourists ever drive into the state? He didn't need to radio his supervisor to confirm the law... he knew full well. And let's not forget that he tracked down his friends to ticket them as well and make a comment that their friend was up in the station crying. That is not a man that is ignorant of the law and has been corrected by supervisors... that is a man that doesn't care about the law.

To be fair... a massive amount of the crime they are imprisoned for are victimless drug crimes that are just the method of targeting people in poverty to keep the prison industrial complex quotas met. It just so happens the majority of people in poverty are minorities.
My advice to you buddy is next time you run into an officer who seem to lack better judgement or knowledge of international law, is to ask for a supervisor. Officers sometimes will not stand down and admit to lack of knowledge but if a supervisor intervenes, the issue might have resulted without a ticket being issued in the first place.
Or simply say, can you have your desk sergeant explain this please?
And demand the officer take out a cell phone or tablet and look up the law quick before making up nonsense.

Just my two cents man. Call the ticket in and verify that it has in fact been dropped, you should have received something in writing. If this guy is lying to you (not saying he is, but I'm sure he got a talking to...) and that ticket is not dropped and goes unpaid, it will cause an issuance of a suspension of driving privileges and a warrant for you arrest will be issued. so now he gets you on driving on suspended license and the warrant... Trust no one man especially someone you threw head first under a fucking bus bro LOL

CHP made a mistake on giving me a citation for where my registration tags were located. I complained once I figured out he was in the wrong. I spoke to the officers and they also told me that the charges were dropped however no one told the LA County Traffic Court and I had to pay a hefty fine for dealing with it too late. Smh. Go to the courthouse.
I really appreciate the way you handled the whole situation with the police. You didn't accept the bogus claim of the officer and you did it in a polite manner that showed the proper interaction between a civilian and a law enforcement officer. Also your videos are very well put together.

Doesnt matter if Cop said its dropped, you MUST follow up. At the end of the day the only thing that matters if its cleared up in the computer system, as thats the same system that will issue an arrest warrant. Dont be silly, follow it up and get paper work/confirmation number etc...

I have watched several of your videos and specifically the one where you were stopped for running a stop sign. This video is several years old and I hope you received something in writing that the ticked was dismissed. Never take anyones word when you deal with law enforcement. You are really a stand up man.
The cop acted the same way people do when they're caught in a lie and just stick to it regardless to avoid admitting they're wrong. Instead of it being awkward for them, they just make it awkward for you.
You make sure you get a written update for both the ticket and the complaint. Never trust people's words anymore, get everything in writing.

You know what I love about this video... you not only explain in outstanding detail the events that took place, but you also 'not just quote' but also clip in parts of the recorded incident of the occurrence with law enforcement. Many of us I know do not record our traffic stops or anything on the road... I'm gonna be honest... We should all record what we see on the road 'in the safest and most legal' manner of course. Recorded evidence trumps all truths, regardless of yours or mine.

No he wasn’t harassing anyone here. He was simply responding with other officers to a call. He was very polite and helpful. I got to chat with him off to the side while the other officers talked to the people involved in the dispute. I felt we had a good chat.

3. Drivers license
4. Towing threat .

The ticket will have the court contact information on it. You need to call/visit the court to confirm it's been dropped. When you sign a ticket, you are agreeing to show up in court or pay the fine by a certain date. Otherwise you'll have a "no show" and a bench warrant will be issued for your arrest. It is possible this cop is lying to you about it being dropped to trip you up in the system. If he's on the level, then good for him for being honest. Just make sure and confirm it yourself with the court, not the PD.
There is a chance that his supervisor told him to drop the ticket, after your visit to the PD station. If he did drop it, the ticket will not be in the court/legal system. But if the ticket was sent in to the court/legal system then it's on you to respond TO THE COURT by the date specified.
Get a written confirmation that the officers complaint against you ( ticket ) has been removed or it may show up in a database as unpaid or pending and or valid and active ! Never lose the documents ever ! Save and keep safe ! Interesting situation , very interesting . Thanks for sharing 😎🏁🏁🏁

It's impossible that Officer Pena did not know that you can drive in California with a Canadian driver's license. Beverly Hills is one of America's biggest tourist attraction. Canadian's have been able to drive without a CA dl for at least the past 50 years. Officer Pena lied about seeing him run a stop sign, lied about the exhaust noise being above legal limit and lied about not being able to drive without a CA dl just to harass him. Officer Pena gets paid to overtime to go to court.

Trust that cop at your own peril, definitely make sure that ticket is gone. Also he may act like he's cool with you talking to you on the side but the minute he can bust you or your buddies he will and he's waiting for that day. He seems to have a power trip and doesn't seem to be too well versed in the law which is a bad combination.
