Butter up some ryebread and put a sliced potato with skin on, top it with some mayo and chives salt and peber and flush it down with a good pilsner...Prefered Carlsberg, and woila the taste of summer.

Absolutely, if you can see the bread then is just a rugbrødsmad. If I went to a restaurant and they served me a smørrebrød where you can see the bread, I would string up the chef and wipe him with a hot glowing red piece of iron.
But my biggest issue is the bread, hell no, for me it looks like French toast, with color.
But have to give him credit for the scrambled egg, but it’s not on the spot. But so rare to see people make scrambled eggs correctly, off and on the heat is the way to go, but his missing some secret steps.

Oh, dont let the bitter Danes get to you. We have the exact same sandwiches here in Norway, in Sweden to. In different variations though. The salmon with eggs are basicly the same wherever you go in Scandinavia. However we all use different types of bread, and while the Danes love to go out for a smørbrød, we usually make them at home in Norway and Sweden for festivities (except for shrimp sandwiches, and salmon egg sandwhiches which you can buy anywhere). There are som more exclusive Danish types we dont have though, like "Dyrlægens nattmad" - or something in Danish. Denmark have a huge smørbrød fetish, and make some very good ones.

  • @johnnyo3fan
    @johnnyo3fan 4 года назад

Rugbrod is great for things like pickled herring and liverwurst, but the salmon and shrimp should be done on a good French bread. The shrimp goes on mayo and a bed of lettuce and the hard boiled eggs should be on mayo and sliced tomato, both with a little dill, but not as much as the Swedes use! Don't forget to chase the sild (herring) with a snaps and a Carlsberg.

The eggs and the "laks" is okay to have on soft bread as that darker sandwich bread you had there... I have never had herring on that though - but it looked like it was tasty. Well done =D (to make a good rye bread you need sourdough - the taste is epic/authentic when doing so). Ryebread is much more dark and if you like it you can put as many seeds and nuts in as you like and imo it needs to be inside the loaf =D

Personally I wouldn't eat the one with shrimp for religious reasons, but the curried herring and salmon with eggs and dill are calling my name! They were all so pretty and look delicious!

You missed out on the number one rule of smørrebrød which is rugbrød (the danish national bread)

I wonder if you might be able to tell me if there is an English edition of Miss Jensen's Cookbook, Frøken Jensens kogebog. I really want to find this book in English so I can learn traditional Danish cuisine but I've not been able to :'( Otherwise do you have any suggestions of a comprehensive book on traditional Danish cuisine?

To anyone wondering - Smørrebrød comes in three variants: Håndmad, Smørrebrød and Højtbelagt. Håndmad (Hand food) is a cold cut slapped on bread - it's our packed lunch. Smørrebrød is served on a plate, and you eat it with cutlery. Højtbelagt smørrebrød is a meal on a slice of bread, and generally have given names (Stjerneskud, Dyrelægens Natmad, Dansende Pinsesol).

I love how he only mentions the shape of the bread but not how the bread he uses is likely whole grain and not rye

Celery on a prawn smörrebröd?? No, no, no! It’s crispy lettuce first, then the prawns, mayonnaise, (and please take the time to make your own!) sliced, hard boiled egg and fresh dill

Nice try and I would eat it, but you have to use real ryebread. At least for the heering. If you visit New York, then visit Meyers food -hall at Grand-central. They sell freshly baked “danish “ ryebread . Greetings from a dane

You must have a snaps to the herring. It must be able to swim in the stomach.

  • @peterlarsen7779

Okay, have only seen you cut 2 slices of bread - which you "don't want too thick" - aaand they're twice as thick as they should be. You want them to be 1/4" thick.
To hel! with the cellery....go with either chives or watercress...and a very thin tomato wedge....and the mayo of course.
IMHO, you should either have left the herring as was...or just cut each piece in half. Again, IMHO, mix the curry and siur cream FIRST, then add the herring afterwards. Alternatively, place the herring in the bread, then top with the curried sour cream and if you like a couple of slices of hard boiled egg (or both halves). No pepper in the herring in curry sauce. Just onions and/or egg.
    The salmon looks great too.
So...positive critique aside, I would as a Dane sink my teeth into your smørrebrød...using a knife and fork of course 👍😉
    Thanks for share!

I think it tastes great, but not really smørrebrød to me. Also with that type of bread I think they dough will get a tiny bit soggy pretty quickly.
