England were easily one of the most disjointed teams in the tournament. A goalkeeper who is a decent shot stopper but constantly wants to launch the ball long to nobody in particular, a midfield with players stepping on each other’s toes and not knowing whether to stick or twist, and a striker that wanted to play quarterback more than be in the penalty box where we needed him to be. Just overall pretty dismal with a sprinkling of highly euphoric individual moments.
I agree that Southgate has done well to a certain point but I think he has hit his ceiling and we run the risk of going backwards again as I think it’s pretty obvious that the new players coming through were growing exasperated with his decision making.

Agreed about too many players operating in the same zone. I remember against Slovakia you could've thrown a tea towel over Foden, Kane and Bellingham. It was so easy for them to defend, and that's on the coach's team selection/instructions

@@5C4riotI find myself in the position of having to agree with you totally on that point. Yes Southgate’s ethos of creating club England, his ability to interact with the media are hugely impressive and a positive on his behalf. He obviously must be a likeable guy to work for and with in that respect. However his tactical ineptitude, his poor game management, his desire to play people out at favouritism are just not acceptable. I’m sure he came into the role saying he would pick people on form. Harry Kane this tournament, Harry Maguire throughout the last few year’s, playing Trent out of position, bringing in Gallagher instead of starting Mainoo from the off. These are massive signs he has no clue how to win against the big teams in the big games. I mean Reverting to a 4,3,3 for the final what the hell was that. The first 45 minutes against the Netherlands were so good. That formation worked, we dominated the midfield, I would have rather gone out and lost against Spain all guns blazing instead of that whimper performance because lads were out of position or totally legless in terms of form. Good riddance IMHO, thanks for the improvements, 1 tournament too long tbh. Let’s hope the new person is far more attack minded. With these lads we’ve got now, it’s bred for the style of play.

I’ve been reading the foreign media and comments and their reaction to Southgate resigning was fear, because they believe England with a good coach could dominate. They underestimate the incompetence at the FA, who are the real reason England have won so little. It is clear England need an elite coach in their prime to take England to next level and Klopp and Pep are obvious choice, but they are looking at Howe and Potter, who have won no major trophies, because promoting English mediocre coaching is more important than winning.

Great analysis Ferdinand! Gareth Southgate was a very successful manager that needed to leave because he had improved the team tremendously and taken them to a level above which he couldn't personally deliver.
Tactically, he got it all wrong at the Euros. A big part of that was that he wasn't willing to make the hard decisions necessary to make the team succeed. Kane should have been on the bench since he became a huge defensive liability while offering nothing in hold up or link up play. A big reason for that is the players surrounding him, Bellingham and Foden specifically.
Worst thing to happen to England was Bellingham succeeding at the False 9 role in Madrid. He was a great CM at Dortmund and the Dortmund Bellingham was what England needed to partner with Rice, Mainoo or Palmer.
Foden is overhyped, and this tournament showed it. Cole should have taken the AM role. And Gordon and Saka should have flanked Ollie.
I am happy that Southgate left of his accord. Great coach for the England team to bring them out of their poor tournament showing. Excited to see who England brings as the manager. It will do England good to find a foreign coach

Please can the English media stop crediting Southgate with improved results, no previous England coach has inherited such a deep pool of talent. To put it in perspective and context England at youth level for past 148 years only won 2 youth Euros in their history. In the last 6 years England have won at youth level 2 world cups and 4 youth Euros, not only unprecedented success in England’s 156 year history, this is unprecedented success in such a short time for any nation in the world, which proved England had world best talent in several age groups. England had more champions league winners under 30 in their squad, than any other team in the euros. People need to understand the talent Southgate was working with where his 7th and 8th choice central defenders play for Milan and Bayern. Where players like Grealish, Maddison, Sancho are not selected and they are not really missed and these players would walk into many other national teams.
The English media are missing the context by praising Southgate for better results. It is the foreign media who are being more accurate in their assessment of Southgate, where he is viewed as not only an utter failure, but also one of the worst coaches in international football. They feel it takes a special kind of bad coaching to take team with the most attacking options of any Squad and have them play slow, defensive low block football with them. It is a crime against football.

Hey Rio as always look forwards to your videos. When you say the relationship was toxic I believe we know how that comes about, with all the toxic analysis and assumptions after each game, than in hindsight, he's suddenly the man. I don't get the reason not the narrative behind this but I believe England will struggle to replicate close to what Southgate has done. You need to build a winning culture before you become a champion, 2 Finals and a semi in 8 years is not a piece of cake. Keep up the great work 😉💪🏻

Southgate was not quite enough. 85% of the qualities that we needed to win. 85% is far beyond what we had prior. I fear (and I think I'm right) that the fans only think we have 15% left to fulfil.
The reality is with Southgate leaving, we don't only need a manager that can bring that 15% quality, but the 85% that Southgate takes with him upon his departure. Some people think the togetherness, belief, resilience and stability will simply stay put and will require no work to maintain, but that is a sign of a people who take things for granted far too easily. I don't know whether to be glad about a change just yet, but with change, there is always an opportunity.

Hopefully this is a slightly more balanced view. He has done really well in bringing club England together and what he has created for the future is phenomenal. The vibe the atmosphere and everything that goes with that he has done something that I don’t think many could have done including pep and maybe even Klopp. But for the constructive criticism he lacks tactical awareness and I think he lacks the courage that all top managers have where they are prepared to take a gamble. With all due respect I do wonder if he would’ve got to both of those finals without playing against such easy team. We will never know, but do you honestly think the teams of 90 96 98 2002 2006 wouldn’t have done something if they had the same lucky drawers that Southgate has had. again as I said we will never know but let’s take the positive from what he’s built. We don’t need to slag the guy off. Let’s let him move on and now we need to concentrate on finishing the good work he’s done behind-the-scenes.

You're right to be honest. People should be careful what they wish for. England only got to semi-finals in 1990 and 1996, both of which I remember clearly as a 13 and 19 year old. This only happened again under Southgate, thrice. The eras of Sven, Capello, Hodgson and Maclaren brought down the standards and for 2 decades they couldn't even get to a semi! But Bellingham should be told to stay in the midfield let foden do his thing. Play with three at the back and play the aggressive attackers. Eng were massive favourites at Eng bookies pre South Africa 2010, and despite incredible opposition (Spain were possibly the best ever football team, France incredible squad, Messi) the overwhelming opinion was that it was England's tournament to lose. Best decision but new gaffer needs to have broad shoulders and be their own man. Southgate and FA in past 10 years have laid a foundation to consistently perform. St George's and youth teams are doing great. More young kids breaking into Premier League teams. New gaffer needs to be of high character like Gareth which is extremely important. Need to keep the club vibe within the squad. We need a master tactican who plays to the teams strengths. We have the players who are used to playing high energy, technically brilliant football. Yes you have to look at opposition and be strategic but be positive. Gordon getting 6 mins in the tournament was a travesty. Kid was unplayable, and so quick. We now have a team of starters and major impact finishers. Players need to know they're not untouchable when it comes to winning. Gareth got subs right, but it could he argued he should have made those changes sooner.
