  • Welcome back to Stick To Football with Gary Neville, Ian Wright, Jill Scott and Roy Keane - the original show from The Overlap brought to you by Sky Bet.
As we reach the international break, today’s episode is all about our panels stories from playing for their country.
Listen to Roy’s tales of the Republic of Ireland squad at the 1994 World Cup and the build-up to the infamous fall out at the 2002 World Cup.
Wrighty reveals how playing for England was the best feeling he ever had, but not playing in an international tournament meant he never fulfilled his destiny.
Gary chats about the England camp that seen a pianist sell a story of a social squad gathering to the press as well the brutal reaction from Paul Gascoigne for his 1998 World Cup omission.
And with 161 England caps to her name as well as being the only person around the table to boast a major international trophy, Jill chats about England’s Women’s Euro 2021 success.
We also answer your community questions. Watch out for some classic shirts and cap Roy has on display, find out which roommate Wrighty was up playing Tomb Raider with until 4am and how a spiritual healer resulted in the end to a team-mates international career.
Make sure to turn on notifications and subscribe so you never miss an episode!

@@paulymullo Really? Yes, but I doubt MM meant for a second that he was 'paying for'him' in the sense that he was his inspiration. Obviously Ireland was his inspiration. Being Irish. Etc. But Ireland wasn't managing the team. Mick was. Obviously he was 'playing for' Mick, in that literal sense. And all Keane had to do was respect that much at least, and let MM know that, as his country meant so much to him, he could put HIS ego aside, and his differences with Mick, and get on with the bloody job. But he couldn't even do that. One of several times when being petulant gets confused with being tough talking/down to earth. Mick's not a very likeable character, to be fair, but Keane's spat his dummy out here. For Ireland.

My favourite story about Jack Charlton was from that 1994 world cup in the US that Roy is talking about. The Irish had hoped to be drawn in either Boston or Chicago, the centres of their diaspora, for their first game, which was against Italy. Instead they were drawn to play in New York. Obviously there are plenty of Irish in New York but there are more Italians and they’d feared being outnumbered and not having the huge support they were used to. But an hour before the game, the team walked out on the pitch on the Giant's Stadium and were met by a huge sea of green and white. Everywhere you looked there were Irish fans and the sound of them singing 'Ole Ole Ole' was deafening. Big Jack went over to Tony Cascarino, put his arm around his big strikers shoulders and said 'Jesus Christ Cas.....you're the only fucking Italian here' 😂

IMO it's the way Mick did it. Talk to him in private, not question his commitment/respect in front of the team.
As Keano said he's playing for the Country not for any one manager's ego
Ego clash I think, cuz Keano was Capt n best player, big threat to McCarthy

    • @steve10
      @steve10 5 месяцев назад +8

Mick obviously didn't like Roy at all , and used Roy's reputation against him , Roy was pointing out things he thought weren't right as the elder statesmen , I bet when he was under Jack the older lads could chat to Jack if things weren't right , so now he thinks he should say that the set up is wrong. I dont like Mick myself tbh , he seems big headed , so I'm guessing he didn't want Roy to get the better of him.
Calling out your players in front of each other is a classic no no , none of us have been managers in football but we all know its something you don't do.
If Roy gad stayed mick would have hung him out to dry and left him on the bench , so he went home , and even if he had explained it all , we can see how it still annoys him , it would have been 100 times worse, so if we had spoke he would have been made the bad guy anyway.
So he took his dogs for a walk , there were three things he could have done , stayed and had mick take the piss , leave and speak and have the press see how frustrated he was or say nothing and people thinking he rejected his country on the eve of the world Cup.
      Lose lose situation

Meant with the greatest of respect. I was in the comedy musical written about the Roy Keane departure in Saipan called 'I Keano' .Hilarious comedy musical written by the 'Father Ted' writers Arthur Mathews and the like. It was based back in Roman times as if the Irish Squad had qualified for the Coliseum in Rome but turned up with out any weapons or armour. Characters where called names like Mcarticus, Quinnus, Duffus (Damien Duff) Keano the younger (Robbie Keane). To this day it's still the biggest musical/Theatre to come out of Ireland after 'Riverdance'. Roy came with John O'shea one night and seemed to have a good laugh and night. One of the final lines in the play is when Ireland have crashed out of the tournament and 'Packie Bonnerus' runs onto stage and says, overly excited, clapping his hands and jumping up and down...."The daggers and the gear have arrived!"...Met Roy and John afterwards and it was great and he was great. Got some great pics. Brilliant memories.

Lots of footballers there but none as big a name as him but it was him that spent the most time with the fans by far. Another superb episode 👏 Loved hearing Ian Wright talk about the influence of Bryan Robson, so many players have talked about how influential Robson was in the England squad and how supportive he was with new players. Always got the impression McMahon was a bit of a weapon and Wright confirms this.
Mccarthy crossed the line with Keane, making out that he feigned injury to miss a play off game, can’t help but think McCarthy knew that would get the reaction it did. Shame really, Ireland had a great tournament and it would have been even better with the captain and one world class player.
