Hey Joe, just wanted to share... I was right there alongside (way behind) you both last year in Nice and earlier this year in Texas. Both races were dreadful for me, with the latter being my first DNF in 20 years of racing. But to give it perspective, this was after the best race of my life - a 30+ minute PR in IM TX 2023, and after some of the best training/numbers of my life. So it's bears repeating - I think that's just life and racing. You're an amazing talent, you mustn't forget that. I hope, as the stoics say, the obstacle becomes the way forward for you. Best wishes.

Joe - You have tremendous talent and this is, to your point, a rough patch. Stress is stress no matter if it is as a result of training or what life throws at you outside of training. It strikes me that it did just accumulate and contributed to how you are feeling. Therefore, you should be proud of your decision to take a break and rebuild. If you did engage a coach I think it should be one that provides the objectivity you might need to hold you back so you do not end up training too hard so close to race day. We are proud of you. It takes courage to post this type of video.

Huge adjustment and added stress levels….easy to think it doesn’t impact you but you no longer have a singular focus in life, which is key for a pro.

Hey Joe I'm here watching your videos for years, you're a great guy, honest, smart, assertive you can only get better ! Sometimes life put some obstacles to overcome so you can become even better in every area of your life.
About the swimming coach I would advise you something a bit weird at first :
-Try getting a synchronized swimming coach (they are mostly females) : Why ?
    1) She will definetely not have the triathlon mentality so she will not interfer in your performance side, only your technique from the purest point of view
    2) Not a competitive mindset can be helpful from a coach when you are already a high pressure guy, being surrounded of high pressure coaches can break your mindset
    3) Synchronised swimmers are not the fastest swimmers but they are definitely the MOST effective swimmers, watch all the females swimming a 1:15 / 100m crawl without any muscle (they are not the muscular type) and any difficulty. They really swim like dolphins it's insane. In fact some of them are long distance swimmers (8k+ per session) without being Leon Marchand
I got an epiphany when I met my last synchronised swimming coach 2 years ago I miss her a lot. I went from 1:45 /100m on my half IM to 1:25 / 100m on the full IM lanzarote in 2022.
Funny thing is : I actually swam 130km / year and had ONLY 3k / week with my coach. Other sessions were alone or with triathlons guys. Within one session I was getting so much sensations in the water, weird exercises, weird templates I really felt different in the water. Having even one session like this in the week and having some other traditional triathlon sessions during the week was really a good combination.
Enjoy your journey and keep sharing it with us :)
    Cheers

Joe, I'd love to see you get back on top form. Have you considered that the downturn in performance roughly correlates with the arrival of the little one? It's a massive adjustment and maybe you're just not quite there with that yet... Something to consider! Also I would urge you to seriously consider getting a coach. There is a reason it is a profession and people are successful at it. Someone like Dan Plews I think would suit you as he is very data & analytically driven, but it's also about how the personalities merge. I think with coaches the real benefit is they can have an OBJECTIVE opinion on your situation, as a self coached athlete its impossible to do this and I can hear from what you're saying you are trying to figure things out and second guessing some decisions, trying to go back and repeat what worked in the past. I really think the right coach, after a bit of proper rest, could really be the difference to get you back on Kona winning form!! Take your time to pick the right one, and give it a go for 6 months. What do you have to lose?

    • @thomasyoung4388
      @thomasyoung4388 3 месяца назад +1

I kind of understand your point, but coaches literally can't have an objective opinion. Objectivity is based on facts. Opinions are personal views or judgements. So that doesn't make any sense at all.

You don’t need a coach Joe you already know sports science and physiology isn’t some dark art with a secret recipe. It’s so personalised and half the time the break down is trying to convey how your feeling physically and mentally to a coach where if your setting the training your self then you know how you’re feeling so you can just adapt it as you go.
Stress is stress your body doesn’t discriminate . Training volume, intensity, frequency, life , sleep, travel.etc
Look forward to you back in the mix after a rest and refresh. #skipper2.0

yes mate, just listening to you talk it sounds like just having a coach to bounce all your thoughts and feelings would help tremendously. Remember a coach does more than just program workouts. They are there to get the best out of you all the time and will make more rational decisions rather than bouncing from race to race, or training style to training style.
    wish you the best :)

Love the idea of a coach but can you find one that is getting other pro’s results? Can Max get you in?
As for the swimming. You get great times in the pool. I think if you did what Ari Klau or Lionel has done with a massive season block then I think you will smash it. I’m sure you will come back from this.

Roth with 2:41 run then only 4 weeks later win at LP IM. The physiologic hole that you dug could easily take months to a year before you would fully recover. The emotional stress of the wrong turn at IM Texas was equivalent to the physiological stress had you completed the race, so no wonder the ITU race went poorly.
