Mike, just to clarify. The Monarchy is largely a figurehead. The Prime Minister and elected government set policies, make laws, the decisions, etc. The UK is a constitutional monarchy (since 1690). Constitutional in political terms means restricted, so a restricted/limited monarchy. To put it into perspective: laws are made in parliament, the elected government, but still need Royal assent to officially become law. Queen Anne, in 1707(!), was the last monarch to withhold Royal Assent for a particular bill... so even the American Revolutionarily war, King George III gets the attention in the U.S., but in reality it was Prime Minster Frederick North who actually ran 'the show' (country).
Overview is fine, but the specifics are wrong. The monarch and parliament are sworn in on oaths relating to documents that go back as far as possible which very clearly state that all power is held with the people and the people make the laws, customs and that the monarch and parliament are to uphold them. This culminated in the last English civil war, resulting in the 1689 Bill of Rights which states clearly who is in charge. Parliament can only make statutes and acts and is soverign to do so, but these are not laws unless the people accept/contract with them, thus enabling that power over them until notice of non acceptance is given to your MP/Parliament and if Parliament wishes to claim contract with you then the burden of proof is on them to prove it, otherwise it doesn't stand.
@@discipleaj erm I'm not sure you're correct about this, maybe in principle, but not in reality. Parliament passes laws all the time, yes through a process, but there is no public consent for these laws and it isn't required. The Bill of Rights doesn't state who is in charge... it sets out the limits on the powers of the monarch and established the rights of Parliament and the rights of individuals. First on the list: "By assuming and exercising a power of dispensing with and suspending of laws and the execution of laws without the consent of Parliament;" *Consent of parliament*. NOT the public per se. We vote for our representatives, who we trust... 🙄to form laws and govern on our behalf. We can, of course, meet with our member of Parliament and express our concerns, etc. but Parliament doesn't require public consent. You can back to the Magna Carta, etc., but even that is relating to if we're not being properly governed or something, I can't remember exactly now. But in reality, laws are passed all the time without ever needing public consent.

Glad to see Stott and Ritland talking about the various accents. You can go 25 miles in any direction in the UK and the accent completely changes. The accents not only tell you generally where someone is from, but also their class and social standing. Add to this the Northern vs Southern aspects and it turns into a real Tower of Babylon. In the Midlands, they even still use thee, thy and thou; i.e., 'take care of thyself...' And there is nothing like being introduced to someone and having them later comment that you have a 'tradesman's' accent - not good. Then, of course there are the Geordies and sections of London, etc., where you need either a translator or subtitles to try and understand what they gobbing about.

Noone comes close to what the US has on hand. God bless all warriors, and let us pray we are not needed again any time soon.
What dean says about gun control in the UK isn't quite correct. Firstly, ownership isn't limited to shotguns. And for a shotgun certificate, you don't actually need to have a reason (unless they ask but, this isn't part of the application). So barring any criminal convictions or mental health issues anyone can own a shotgun, provided you can store it safely. You can also have bolt action rifles, up to pretty much any caliber. But for a firearms certificate, you DO need a valid reason to have it, be it hunting or target shooting etc.
Yes that is true. But you have to have a reason to own a gun legally which is subjective. I live in South London I can apply for a gun license and apply legally at the local Police station. The first question they would ask is why do you sir who live in South London in an urban area feel the need to want a firearm. Sporting reason? Or hunting? Show me your credentials.
