You probably didn't have people walk in back then and say "I need 20 Panamera for the board members, 15 Cayenne for the upper managment, and 25 macan for the upper middle management thanks" Thats what everyone is forgetting, these guys buying 5 porsche cars for a million and expecting to be up the list, yeah maybe 25 year ago, but now? Do you know what happens if you refuse the guy putting the fleet order through a gtr? he puts his order through with mercedes the next year and phones them up looking for an amg gt coupe and gets it.. Even Lexus did it, a cherry to dangle at the fleet buyers. Watch makers do it. You have to get to car brands that only do sports before having 4 or 5 will get you any sort of way up a list.

Sure, they're not super cars, but they're great cars non-the-less and fun to work on (easy to work on, lots of parts), cheap (relative to luxury brands), they''re great all rounders (used in many different forms of motorsport, like rally, time attack, drag, circuit racing etc), have a rich history in motorsport (with WRC) and in general are good enthusiast vehicles.

I worked at a used dealership for 2 weeks. 18 yo. My best friend, basically my brother, had just taken his own life. One of the salesmen there saw me crying in my car on lunch break and found out from the boss what happened. This person had been hazing me from hour 1 of working there. He taunted me about my brother. Telling me his sole mission was to make me cry as much as possible -and I won’t repeat any if the things he said to me but think of the worst things possible. Everyone there was an asshole but nowhere near this level of pure evil.
Fast forward some years and I’m the AGM of a gourmet market-basically a mini Whole Foods but over-the-top customer service and quality-and guess who walks in the door? My boss, the GM, knew my story and I took her aside and told her this idiot was in our store. She gave me permission to kick him out. I didn’t do it. He was with little ones, what I assumed to be his family including what I assumed to be a human wife; it was holding a baby. I’m not sure he even recognized me. It wasn’t worth giving his smiling, happy children that memory.
I shared this because it’s kind of related and I want whoever reading this to do me a favor and go find someone you love, hug them, and tell you how much they mean to you. ❤

    Here's a summary of the video's content:
Introduction: Mark McCann sets out to buy a Porsche GT3 RS, aiming to expose the secretive and exclusive world of supercar dealerships. He highlights the difficulty of purchasing limited edition supercars, which often requires being on a special "list" managed by dealerships.
The List: McCann explains that to buy exotic, low-number cars like the Porsche GT3 RS, customers need to be on a dealership's list. This list is reserved for their best customers, who buy multiple cars annually, spending millions. These customers are considered brand ambassadors and have a better chance of purchasing rare supercars.
Dealership Practices: Through his journey, McCann uncovers a web of potentially misleading practices by dealers. He finds that to qualify for the list, customers are often expected to buy several less desirable, high-volume models, which are likely to depreciate significantly.
Personal Experience: McCann visits dealerships and contacts them over the phone, only to be met with the harsh reality that without a significant purchase history, securing a GT3 RS is nearly impossible. Dealerships require a history of buying multiple cars, sometimes with specific spending thresholds, without any guarantee of receiving a rare model.
Overs and Contracts: The video discusses the concept of "overs," where customers sell newly purchased cars at a profit due to high demand. Dealerships attempt to prevent this by making customers sign contracts agreeing not to sell their cars within a certain period, under threat of being blacklisted.
Customer Stories: McCann shares stories from customers who have tried to secure rare models by following dealerships' requirements, only to be left frustrated and financially worse off. These stories highlight the opaque and seemingly unfair system that benefits dealerships at the expense of passionate car enthusiasts.
Conclusion: Despite his efforts and a significant personal history of Porsche ownership, McCann concludes that the system is flawed, with dealerships holding all the power. He criticizes the practice of selling dreams to customers without delivering, emphasizing the need for transparency and fairness in the supercar purchasing process.
TLDR: The video sheds light on the complex and often discouraging world of supercar dealerships, calling for a more straightforward and equitable system for car enthusiasts looking to purchase their dream cars.

Yea but you gotta wonder why Rolex ADs don't just add dealer markup. It's because Rolex fixes the price at MSRP, so the only way for an AD to squeeze out more money is to put you on a perpetual waiting list unless you buy your new Sub alongside three Datejusts for you, your wife, and your mom. If Rolex and Porsche allowed dealers to markup above sticker, they'd just do that and forget about this buying 10 cars / 10 watches nonsense.

Yes! This is the way. Don't like the game, stop playing. They do this because people still take them up on it. It's really unfortunate because companies could have an expanding customer base if they had methods to entice new people aboard with great products at great prices. If someone came out with a great drivers' car that looked like it cost a million but was really sub-$50K and readily available, they'd sell insane numbers and Porsche, Ferrari, etc. would see their business model cave in.

Then they come out with a model 2024 911 GT3RS Hotwheel. 😂 since there's only select stores that have them, I'd pay $5, $10, $25, maybe even $50 for it. Just to add to the vast collection I already have. Now think of that with real cars. Now throw in planes, yachts, manions etc. Unfortunately that's the way the cookie crumbles lol. Then you have psychos like the Sultan of Brunei and you have 5-20 of each model of car! And then customs versions of those too lmao. People have too much money!

He bought the car according to their specs, never drove them, brought them back (got MSRP for them), they sold them as "Pre Owned" and took another guys head off price wise. This went on and on. He always wanted one of their HALO cars but never got one. He finally bought three new ones and sold them himself at a $ 400,000 profit. These dealerships are run by pure scammers that want you to buy 10 cars from them, take expensive tours, and then backdoor you even after paying a deposit. I'd rather spend that money modifying something easily available and have the same handling and way more HP than anything in those dealerships. Also, you could have spent 1 billion dollars worth of Porshe's in the past from other dealerships, or private sales, but that dont mean anything because it dont help with their current sales quota's for the month. Thats why i believe some people get scammed. They are poor innocent souls just used by these companies in order to keep up with their sales quota's.

Hey Mark, I just watched your video and couldn't agree more, especially given my recent experience here in the US. I'm an expat residing in San Francisco and have a story that echoes your points, but perhaps even more frustrating.
During the Covid pandemic, I set out to purchase a Porsche GT3. Despite my efforts, I couldn't secure it from a Porsche dealership, so I ended up buying it from a local non-Porsche dealer. Keen to establish a relationship with the official service department, I visited the Porsche dealer, letting them know about my GT3 acquisition and expressing interest in a GT3 RS. The response was a bit disheartening, as the representative hinted at the difficulty due to my lack of a "Porsche history" with their dealership. I explained that this GT3 was my seventh 911, though my previous purchases were in the UK. Their insistence on a history with their specific dealership felt somewhat narrow-minded, but I understood their perspective.
In a bid to strengthen this nascent relationship, I even purchased a Taycan from them - a fantastic car, by the way. Confident that this might put me in good stead, I asked to be put on the waiting list for the GT3 RS. I had low expectations but was willing to be patient. However, what came next was truly shocking. The representative mentioned that as a new customer, if I were lucky enough to get an allocation for a new car, I'd be required to pay an outrageous premium of $150,000 over the list price. This revelation was astounding and deeply disappointing. The notion of an authorized dealer demanding such a significant markup on a new vehicle was beyond belief. Needless to say, I was livid and expressed my displeasure quite vocally to both the representative and the dealership.
Mark, your video didn't touch on this, but another crucial point to consider is the reason behind the limited supply of high-performance models like the GT3 RS. It's not just what Carl mentioned. A significant factor is the stringent emissions targets that manufacturers like Porsche must adhere to. These high-performance models are produced in limited numbers to maintain a balance with their overall vehicle emissions as a manufacturer.
This experience and understanding the broader context of car manufacturing has left me deeply disillusioned. It's not just about the scarcity of these models; it's also about the tactics employed by dealerships. Porsche, as a brand, risks being tarnished by such practices. Their dealerships’ approach, especially in demanding unwarranted premiums, not only damages customer relationships but also undermines the brand's integrity.
I'm sharing this in hopes that it brings more awareness to these issues and perhaps encourages a change in how these prestigious vehicles are distributed and sold. Thanks for shedding light on this topic, Mark. It's crucial for potential buyers to be aware of these challenges and for manufacturers to recognize the impact of dealership practices on their reputation.

I don't see what's fraudulent about it. Surely it's up to them to decide who they sell to. If you don't like it, go and buy a different car from somewhere else. I presume it's to try and weed out the people who want to come in and buy the car and just immediately flip it for profit whereas Porsche would rather sell to loyal customers who want to actually keep and enjoy the car, or as mentioned in the video, be ambassadors for the brand. I can't really blame Porsche for that. But also similarly just let people with too much money, spunk it away giving it to Porsche for the 'cachet' of owning one of these halo cars.. it's their money, let them throw it away. The same crap happens all over the place with 'luxury' brands.. just go and walk into a Rolex store and try and buy something other than a generic / higher volume piece. In Belgium, my Porsche history is very recent, just bought a new Macan GTS 8 months ago. When I was at the dealership a few weeks ago i was looking at a gt4 rs, and asked if it was still possible to order one. The owner of the dealership told me no, but proposed me a 718 Spyder rs allocation. Out of a 30 sec discussion.. and all the new cars are sold at list price, which seems to be the only way to do it… When I collected my Macan, the first GT3 RS were in the showroom waiting for collection. I’m pretty sure I could have ordered one if I wanted to…

Scarcity is a powerful dynamic. Many high end watch brands are doing the same thing. MSRP doesn’t mean anything. An item is worth what people are willing to spend on it regardless of what its MSRP is. If a Porsche is going for $350k on the secondary market-it’s a $350k car. Are you going to insure it for $250k if replacement value is $350k? Dealers have found out that it’s better to offer these rare items to their best customers at a discount to what the secondary market is commanding instead of just charging anybody and everybody the full market value. I don’t like it as it seems wrong and greedy-but everybody interviewed in this video (the Porsche salespeople a well as that luxury car dealer) was brutally honest about the situation.

You ordered a vehicle, left a deposit, then the dealer sales the truck right from under you to the next customer who was willing to pay $30-$50,000 over. Dirty Game!!!

Great video Mark. I tried a heap of Porsche dealers to get a Cayman GT4RS at list but had no joy. I have also tried to get a GT3 at list but again a massive waste of time, I was constantly directed to the used GT3's on the forecourt at ridiculous overs. Despite being cracking cars, this experience has massively put me off Porsche. These dirty tactics have driven me a way from the brand even though the forecourts are filling up and the prices are coming down.
Keep up the good work Mark. It passes my down time here on an oil rig offshore Africa.

The brand was built by sports car enthusiasts who worked hard and were successful enough to walk into a Porsche dealership and buy a new 911. Good luck with that in the long term, Porsche.

It's far easier and more economical to buy used but... you know... it's not the same, so people still run on the hamster wheel.

No thanks, for a fun weekend car I would rather buy a used base model Carrera with a manual box, a Cayman or Boxter or something mad and quirky like a morgan 3 wheeler that I can thrash around at legal speeds but still have fun. There are too many people with too much money fuelling this. If nobody bothered asking for the GT3 RS then things might change.

And the manager is and was a great friend. He was just doing what he was told. I later found out that they actually rejected one of the stars of the L.A. Ex Porsche sales person here. 992 GT3RS as well as other special models are low supply for a reason.
The reality is a majority of dealers already have their VIP clients set up and don’t want to worry about taking outsiders that don’t want to play the game.
If everyone had them it wouldn’t be special. Not saying it’s right but it all comes down to money and customer loyalty. Dealers want to guarantee the money stays within their wheelhouse.
I had many “VIP clients” over the years and couldn’t get them allocations. Not only do you have to have the right buyer but also the right person within the dealership to make something happen.

Approved pre-owned GT3 RSs would be the best bet. Finding a config that you kinda like and going with it. Yes, you're going to pay a MASSIVE premium above what the car would cost at MSRP but at the end of the day you're going to spend less money than you would buying a shit ton of cars to build a rep with your dealership to MAYBE be able to order your own config. From my understanding a lot of dealers have in stock cars (new) that you can buy as well but they might reserve those as well.
