For your UK followers you should mention there are other alternatives like getting a Automatrics MTrack tracker installed. In Canada we have something similar from a company named Tag. I would never trust the manufactures; its been shown in NA that people who have spent over $2k for Toyota's top security system have had their vehicle stolen.

The police don't help matters. I had two guys get into my ST. Chased them down the street. Called the police, they said they won't send anyone out as they've left. They could have at least had a quick drive round to see if they can spot them. But, the neighbours obviously called the police about me having a bat and the police came within minutes and arrested me, the victim. Apparently a bat isn't reasonable force despite them having at the very least a Hammer and screwdriver. The fact the police don't attend just gives criminals even more confidence.

If car thieves want a car, they will do whatever is necessary to get it. I had my A35 stolen on January 4th from my drive. The thieves walked by the cameras, security lights, etc, and can be seen looking into the car to see a steering lock. They went away for 10 minutes and then came back with tools to break in via the side door on the house. They got the keys and away they went. The car was found in Liverpool 10 days later on stolen plates having been in a bad RTC.
Thankfully, my family was not physically hurt as the thieves were in and out, but it has mentally affected my 6 year old daughter, which is what really upsets both me and my wife.

Keyless Ford Fiestas are very vulnerable also. Multiple different ways thieves go after them. Relay theft, boot latch, OBD hack.
Your best options are a Disklok + Wheel clamp or an immobilizer. Hiding your OBD port, (and pulling out it's fuse) will also force a thief to set off the thatcham if they try that route.
Manufacturers should be absolutely ashamed of themselves that they are producing such vulnerable cars and passing on the cost to the owner when their car gets stolen. Utterly disgraceful!

I had my Mercedes stolen and the thieves knew exactly where the Mercedes Me tracker was. They ripped it out once they'd stopped a short distance away from my home.
Fortunately there was an additional aftermarket tracker on the car and it was traced and recovered by police.
It seems to me that insurers have had enough of paying out time after time for security deficiencies of companies like JLR and through driving prices up and asking for third party solutions they've started to hit the manufacturer where it hurts, their order books.
Ball is in the manufacturers court. Prove that your car's security is improved and the insurance industry will start to relax again.
There is also the challenge on the police and the courts to deal with car thieves more effectively. The guy that stole mine was well known locally and had only recently come out of jail for the same offences.
Great piece Mark. Keep pushing them and hold them to account.

Cost me about £400 all in. A week after I got it, a house in the road next to me had an audi s3, an a5, and a bmw x5 all stolen in litrally 50 seconds. A group of lads walked up to the house. One by one, the cars opened, and lads got in and drove away. 2 days later, 2 lads were on my driveway at 2 am looking through my car and scanning my house. (Ring doorbell) They never stole it or opened it. But I didn't ever leave it outside the garage again (was full of stuff previously). It can be annoying, but I always put my steering lock on now, even if I'm just getting a drink from the shop. I do like the idea of getting a tracker fitted, though.

The best compromise is to have a system that allows them to drive off a short distance down the road before it shuts down giving the impression that it's broken down. This ensures that they won't break into your house and/or harm you and your family. There was a company that fits key-operated fuel shut-off valves which leaves just enough fuel in the system to allow the car to start and move a short distance.

When your car goes into negative equity whilst on finance, claiming insurance is the only way forward. Hence lots are 'stolen' or more accurately 'go missing' . They turn up overseas often where insurance companies cannot officially reach them. After a couple of years the very same exporters offer to sell the same vehicle to the insurers for a vastly reduced sum. The theory being at least they get some money back.... then the car is clean again and can legally return home and be sold again. This cycle is as old as the hills.

The best example i saw of that was a man who borrowed £18K to buy a BMW, he was paying back £600 a month over 3 years and once the novelty wore off - he got bored. He drove it a few miles, parked up in a village and left it before reporting it stolen. The fool didn't know that his BMW keys recorded a lot of data including the last few trips and state of controls on the car for the last journey including the time and GPS position when it was parked. He sent the keys off to the insurers, BMW examined them both and the insurance company found the car parked up, asked him a few questions and then called police. He lost his job, his home and went to prison for 18months. His excuse was that he worked on an oil rig, could afford it, but after showing it to people etc he got bored and claimed the garage was ripping him off with the 3 year finance so wanted to stop paying.
A lot of people do this, the same as people short of money staging accidents.

Don't rely on an Apple air tags... It works via Bluetooth and only works 30 feet away from other iPhones. If you have this expensive of vehicle they have wired in systems. I have one for my truck that costs me $15 a month and wired into the 12 volt power. If power is cut, the on board battery will last months. They also have units about the size of air tags that you periodically charge up and you can place them anywhere. If you get something that transmits live location, you will need to pay something a month for the cell coverage for that unit. I had my truck stolen and the police were at the guys door in 15 min of me finding out it was stolen. Nice part of the tracker is you get their whole driving route recorded so they got him and the second vehicle on every camera he went past on his trip.

A Pandora immobiliser has a fob that needs to be with the car. If the fob isn’t with the car, the car can be driven for a mile before cutting out. That way then, the car will be ditched and the thieves are unlikely to come back to make you hand the key over.

  • @TonyHammer61

Turn off keyless entry/start. Fit a Ghost II immobiliser. Fit a steering lock (as a visual deterrent). Hide an ID tag somewhere in the car. Have a live tracker subscription. If they still take it then there is not much else you could have done

It's quite simple - Like we used to do on older cars - (pull the coil lead), all there needs to be is a power isolator. OEMS could easily fit one, that disables power to all but essential systems. a 'Big red Key' if you will. with a concealed power switch only you know where is located. Fundamentally if anyone invents a clever entry system, then someone else will be clever and get around it. Turn the power off. Job done.

    • @lauriviik
      @lauriviik 9 месяцев назад +1

If OEMs do it, then there is documentation about it that theves can look up. You allways need to have custom disable system.

Some cars handle having their power disconnected better than other's....some don't seem to mind a bit while other's need to be reprogrammed and don't run right until it's done.

the absolutely easiest, and cheapest way to stop car theft. Is to add a hidden manual switch. The switch is wired between the fuse box, and the fuel pump. You can hide it literally anywhere, under the roof lining for example. As long as you switch it off when you leave. That car is not starting. Fact, and you can do it yourself for less than £20.
It's a simple fix, to a huge problem, and 100% reversable when you come to sell. I just dont get why people haven't done this in their masses.

What people need to understand is that due to lack of supply of new vehicles after covid, the market values increased around 70% above normal levels. Some 1 year old cars were selling for over their list price. Now that supply is back to normal values have dropped. They are still around 20-30% higher than they were in 2019.

    Apple Air Tags.
Great advice Mark but please remember, if you put an apple air tag in your car to use it as a tracker, it will make a sound when you try and locate it, therefore alerting the thieves. Watch the videos on here about removing the internal speaker for that reason and you can still find it using the map location.

    2. Remove/by pass the OBD port from the car
    3. You can make an electric kill switch inside(outside) the car ( but you will loose all the settings in the car everytime you use it )
    4. Pray !

This situation is troubling and also highlights a serious issue with dealerships. They charge thousands of dollars to replace and program a lost key, yet we’ve just seen how a universal key can open any car in 30 seconds.
The responsibility for stolen vehicles should fall on the dealerships, as they fail to secure their systems properly. It’s unfair for insurance companies to bear the cost, which ultimately leads to higher premiums for everyone. Dealerships must be held accountable for these vulnerabilities.

21:25 One thing to note about the Apple Air Tags is that they are really easy to find if you have an iPhone. Theres a privacy/anti-stalking feature built into them so that if an AirTag that isn't registered to your iPhone is detected to be within close proximity for X amount of time, you'll get a notification saying so. So the thiefs could very easily just bring an iPhone along with them, see if they get that notification, and then easily find and remove it!

They use a key to get in, then plug a box in and start the car. It is as fast as you can get in and put your seat belt on.
