We bought our brand new 2018 D4 Momentum with an upgrade package at no cost here from the dealer in Perth WA. Done 115000 km, and next month will be six years since we bought it. Done regular servicing at the independent mechanic and at the dealer to update software periodically. Aside from regular wear and tear components replacement, I had no issues. The only problem is deprication, but if the vehicle is kept for long periods, it might not matter. Would I buy it since electrification and post 2022 upgrade? NO. 😢 I recommend getting Lexus NX, which I'm looking at the moment.

I bought one because a motoring journalists put his softometer on the dashboard and claiming it was soft enough, while running his fingernails over a competitors dash and claiming it had "scratchy plastics" Wish I had of waited until a real review like yours was released.
Was taking the Micky out of automotive journalists obsession with soft touch interior finish, which I understand, up until a point. But, get this, CarExpert actually has an instrument for measuring a surfaces hardness that he uses for his reviews. Pretty much it's only cars with plush upmarket interiors that arrive at the dealership on the back of a tow truck. Those vehicles cursed with fingernail rubbing inducing "hard scratchy plastics" seem to always arrive on the service driveway, having been driven there my the owners.
in my second. first D4 now T8 polestar. No issues ever. No German car, Mercedes, Audi, BMW has no more or less issues... My D4 was upgraded with $60 wireless charger, then perfect. My T8 was upgraded with wireless Android Auto/Apple Car play module $75 - again, perfect! Show me a car with more options, matrix style head lights at the time for less. T8 and a daily commute of 30km all on wall plug electricity...hadn't fueled in months...then bowral on long trip as hybrid (4.7 liters per 100km) all with 415 horse power total if needed...show me a better car
I’ve got a 2019 R-design diesel with 110,000km. Apart from the AC evap unit failure (expensive) went halves with dealer and chewing rear brake pads twice as much as front 🤷🏽♂️. My wife and I absolutely love the car!

I own a 2016 xc60 . Now problems other than 2 major air conditioning repairs under warranty. Bluetooth is not good, so I use aux input. Still running well 8 years . Engine and breaks are flawless. Service is annual.
Truely a shame that the XC60 has so many small to medium gremlins plaguing it as it looks like a fun car to drive. I was definitely surprised that Hullsy recommended the diesel over the petrol and hybrid models. It'll be interesting to see how the dark horse of luxury cars Genesis does compared to the likes of the XC60 and fellow European marques when you finally get one to review. Bloody good job guys and look forward to next week's videos as per usual and keep up the good work 👍.
@@ReDriven I will admit I was expecting the safety features overview to be done in the style of someone reading an Ikea manual but having it done in mandarin still gave me a chuckle.
by about the time the first gen XC60 ended production and the second gen started, Volvo had phased out all old engines in favor of new 2L petrol and diesel platforms developed in China, presumably by Geely. Don't know what role Volvo had in that, but they build them in Europe so the reliability is either poor/unpolished design when they were developed, or some build quality issues. The 2L diesel in the 1st gen XC60 was Peugeot/Citroen's HDI which is a proven platform. Solid, reliable, economical(as long as you don't neglect too much of course). That engine has been inside nearly everything you can think of in many many modifications, power outputs and what not. Compact hatchbacks, family estates/wagons, cargo vans, SUV's and more. So what I speculate is: they took that engine as a base for developing the new one and have a more reliable Geely engine thanks to starting from a reliable platform. On the other hand the petrol 2L would be less successful regardless if they based it on an existing europian platform or not. That's because these new engines were conceived as an idea way back in the late 00's. This was early downsizing and turbocharging era in europe and all 2L turbo platforms were complete bollock waffles and they remained that way for at least a few years, maybe at least a model generation or two. Like the early TSI motors on VW's, Audis, Skodas etc... I've seen Mk 5 and 6 golfs doing car repair shops tours, because nobody was able to figure out what was wrong with them 😂 Anyways, all this to say that if they based their new petrol engine on one of those earlier europian platforms, it would be no surprise they are crap. 15 years ago IL4 Turbo diesels in europe were the best and IL4 Turbo petrols were a "don't buy" and "def def don't buy used" 🤣 BTW I've no grounds to base this on, it's pure conspiracy on my part and I just concocted it whilst writing this comment. So consider this non-canon to the lore 😂😂😂
I have a 2014 xc 60! Love it! The drive , the comfort. The only thing is a few sensor randomly going on an recent AC work! I have a good mechanic and I will give it to my 6ft 5 son! Time for an upgrade
I have one since 2012 ( D5) - started well before 2017 ( but I guess you are talking about the chinese assembled model?) It has done 300,000km - no issues at all except now requires a new radiator. BEST car ever. Just wish they still made the D5
I own a Volvo V60 T6 R AWD Polestar engineered 2020, 326 HP equipped with low sportschassi...... absolutely fantastic car , owned it for 2 years now an never failed yet, driven it for 2500 kilometers now without any problems..... so I can't recognize me in all your negative critics you want to submit.... Sounds you really dislike Volvo as car.... 👎👎👎
The D5 engine, the 5 cyl, is reagarded by us as one of the best engines (incl. petrols) in the category < 2.5 l. In our Volvo association (Switzerland), ca 1,200 Volvos, we have 99.7 diesels, and many of the them run for over 400,000 km, before they were sold to Germany or export. The possible mileage of the B5 (4 cyl. Diesel w/ mini e-motor) has be seen in the next years. REMEMBER; every engine can have problems, even a Toyota 1HZ..... the Volvo with the world-wide certified mileage was an 1800 , with 3.5 M miles, not km.... In our association, many people have drive regularly the 240 (stations of course), and even the PV544.....with mileages of around 600,000 km
The funny thing is that Volvo decided to go for a 4 cylinders only to "streamline" their range !! It is just so confusing, wait until they change everything from XC to EX
We owned a brand new 2011 xc60 that had a huge oil consumption. The car was in service over 30 days. Finally it was deemed a lemon car. The manufacturer was forced to buy back the car. It was a nightmare of a car.
Totally different car mate and probably the ford 4cyl engine.. You can complain a lot about volvo (rightfully or not) but engines is one thing they really really know a lot about.
Over here in the U.S. of A., I have test driven a used “2023 Volvo XC60 Recharge T8 Ultimate Bright Theme” (what a mouthful of total mush that full name is!) with an ultra-low 7,963 miles on the odometer, for sale for USD 54,750 (down from its orig. MSRP of $71K+). This video saves me from the possibility of making a big ol’ honkin’ mistake of a purchase!
Love my D5 R design polestar, at 95000km now. Just fitted new brake pads & rotors plus one lower control arm due to a bad ball joint & engine torque mount but apart from that has been great. Does nearly 1000km on a tank on the open road and B&W is best stereo ever.
I own a 2012 XC60 T6 with 90,000 miles. I bought it off a lease in 2015 with 60,000 miles and took it to Volvo Dealer for a pre purchase inspection. They said it was perfect. It's been nothing but trouble. I regret buying it. I'll never buy another one.
I’ve often admired these when I’ve seen the parked on the side of the road. Pity when the engineers asked how complicated Volvo wanted the drivetrain they just got told “yes”. Never let the engineers go nuts…
Had my T5 R-design Two years now best car I’ve ever had better than my Mercedes and BMW. I did take out warranty wise insurance but not used it yet. 😂 the drive and the look are still cool. Thanks
I recently discovered your channel, I’m looking to get an IS300h and your video is really useful in figuring out what to look out for. Great videos! Now subscribed
Its a Ford, and shares components with Landrover and Ford Kuga, all based on Mondeo parts. It almost certainly shares faults with Freelander 2, especially rear differential and Haldex coupling foibles. The earlier Volkswagen five pot diesel was a popular choice, and long lived if serviced correctly. A well respected design.
Thanks for the excellent review. And the great comments. Here in the US, we have Consumer Reports to tell us that the Volvo XC60 is among the least reliable of all the compact luxury SUVs. But I have a 2017 Volvo XC60 T5 AWD, bought used, and I love it. But I have had some expensive repairs, and I did get completely stranded recently. I have been driving various wonderful Volvo sedans and wagons for 50 years and was only ever stranded once before, a long time ago. So I am torn. I would like to get a newer XC60, like a '22, but reliability is one of my biggest concerns. I am thinking that a thorough independent inspection and an extended warranty might be good investments. BTW, one minor beef with my '17 is that the infotainment bezel is brushed chrome and it extends above the top of the dash so that Arizona sun can reflect directly into my eyes. How stupid is that? Fortunately, a sheet of black vinyl adhesive took care of it. Ugly, but functional.
I absolutely love the looks of the modern Volvo’s! The list of issues seems to be at the level that used to belong to Maserati, so I’ll just wait this one out (unfortunately…😢)
I had no problems with my (old) d4 and (latest) b4. It's like life itself, for most people, you never know what's going to happen regardless of brand...
I am always surprised how many people buy a car for it's looks, not for how it performs. I guess it's more important for them to impress their neighbours that to have a car they can rely on year after year.
There is a trim upgrade for rear door lower area from Volvo, costs buttons and you can fit in about two mins per side, stops all dirt getting to inside of rear door.
I was hoping to buy a used XC60 Inscription. I fell in love with the beautiful white interior, but I can't bring myself to pull the trigger after watching this video. I

I didn’t look away when you talked about the T6 depreciation sadly 😢 however my 2020 T6 with all the fruit will continue to serve me for a few more years. Only 44000 ks and no issues as yet. Fingers crossed 🤞

Volvo and expensive doesn't rime well for a swede like myself. Volvo used to be a peoples car, cheap to buy, cheap to maintain. It was there to give a safe and affordable driving experience for everyone who was is need of a car. Anyhow, times changes. Btw an FYI if you own one of these, do not run too long on the hybrid system, run the ICE unit every ones in a while and for a longer period. For one being, too many cold starts with hybrid on and off will make the spark plugs foul and you will have misfire. There is also risk of coaking when running too cold. With that said, don't drive like a mad person, just run it to temperature and stamp the throttle a few times with hard acceleration and you should be fine.
As usual, great review and the espresso sized cup holder option 😊and that’s what you drink reference, as well as the homeland comments, hysterical! 😂🙏💜

Comparing one of this to X3M40i, could you please help on them. Thanks for your videos, SQ5 and GLC are not under consideration anymore. But BMW and Volvo are still on the list.
If water ever finds its way into the cabin through the sunroof, then don't even bother with removing the carpets, the seats and the dashboard for it to dry .. just dry your tears and consider it a right off.. you'll never get rid of the electrical gremlings that will ensue.

It is also a great system, for everyday use it only ever uses the electric motor, but for longer trips and roadtrips (over around 70-80km) you can easily switch to gas engine.
THANK YOU!!!!❤
I own the xc60 B5 pro 2022 model and you are 100% spot on with all the problems you mentioned in this videos 😅
The "current homeland" joke was brilliant! 😂
And the mandarin was accurate. Hahah
@@HlysanderVolvo is owned by Geely, a Chinese car manufacturer since 2010
It’s not a joke. Geely owns Volvo and Polestar
But that wasn’t mainland Chinese accent

I always enjoy your reviews. I might be tempting fate here, but i have 60k on my T5, with no issues and I still totally love the car, it's so beautiful to drive and you feel safer than any other car on the road.
I'm still mad that they dropped the wagons in our market.
Pretty sure they dropped them entirely. Same with diesels
@@pokinachaDiesels I can understand but Volvo not selling estates? It's like if Range Rover suddenly decided to ditch SUVs!
maybe if you actually bought them instead of complaining on the internet...
@@AWMJoeyjoejoe Very true! But here in Europe Volvo thankfully still offer the V60 and V90 wagons.
@@larsgbg2304Not in all of Europe. They've dropped all estates from the UK market. (I know not EU anymore but geographically still in Europe.)
2020 D4 Inscription European owner here and looking to upgrade to B5 2022, this video really recaps everything going on with 2019-2022 XC60's really well.
I bought one because a motoring journalists put his softometer on the dashboard and claiming it was soft enough, while running his fingernails over a competitors dash and claiming it had "scratchy plastics"
Wish I had of waited until a real review like yours was released.
Haha, the softometer, a crucial motoring journalist tool. What channel?
Was taking the Micky out of automotive journalists obsession with soft touch interior finish, which I understand, up until a point. But, get this, CarExpert actually has an instrument for measuring a surfaces hardness that he uses for his reviews.
Pretty much it's only cars with plush upmarket interiors that arrive at the dealership on the back of a tow truck. Those vehicles cursed with fingernail rubbing inducing "hard scratchy plastics" seem to always arrive on the service driveway, having been driven there my the owners.

Yes, buy it! I love mine. No problems.

We have a XC60D5 R Design with over 40k. No issues, awesome performance, ride and economy. Wouldn’t swap it.
Cheers mate!
15 years ago IL4 Turbo diesels in europe were the best and IL4 Turbo petrols were a "don't buy" and "def def don't buy used" 🤣
BTW I've no grounds to base this on, it's pure conspiracy on my part and I just concocted it whilst writing this comment. So consider this non-canon to the lore 😂😂😂
T8 R design 50,000km 2nd gen and no issues.
Live driving this car…only 2 years old though
I have a 2014 xc 60! Love it! The drive , the comfort. The only thing is a few sensor randomly going on an recent AC work! I have a good mechanic and I will give it to my 6ft 5 son! Time for an upgrade
Bought it when it was 4 years old with 65 k miles now it is 105k miles
I have one since 2012 ( D5) - started well before 2017 ( but I guess you are talking about the chinese assembled model?) It has done 300,000km - no issues at all except now requires a new radiator. BEST car ever. Just wish they still made the D5
The metal strip on the rear bumper is a dealer fit option, its not done at the factory, so not really a build issue.
The whole review wasn’t accurate some of it was but most off it wasn’t
I own a Volvo V60 T6 R AWD Polestar engineered 2020, 326 HP equipped with low sportschassi...... absolutely fantastic car , owned it for 2 years now an never failed yet, driven it for 2500 kilometers now without any problems..... so I can't recognize me in all your negative critics you want to submit.... Sounds you really dislike Volvo as car.... 👎👎👎
Brother owns one, he loves it, apart from the dim/slow changing auto gearbox.
Even in Dynamic Drive mode?
"Doesn't get hot in Oz..." Yep, 49C's not hot; well, not compared to a blast furnace, anyway! 🤣 Love it! 👍
Absolutely love my infotainment screen… no issues whatsoever 🤷♂️
I own a 2012 XC60 T6 with 90,000 miles. I bought it off a lease in 2015 with 60,000 miles and took it to Volvo Dealer for a pre purchase inspection. They said it was perfect. It's been nothing but trouble. I regret buying it. I'll never buy another one.
Omg thank you for the mechanic’s words. I’m looking at the xc60 plug-in hybrid. All these common issues sound like a nightmare
I’ve often admired these when I’ve seen the parked on the side of the road.
Pity when the engineers asked how
complicated Volvo wanted the drivetrain they just got told “yes”.
Never let the engineers go nuts…
I ran a 2019 T5 for 4 years, only thing that caused issue was the Aux battery which Volvo replaced under warranty. Now on a new T8 Ultimate 🙂
Another brilliant video guys! This is the best automotive channel on RUclips.

Two years now best car I’ve ever had better than my Mercedes and BMW. I did take out warranty wise insurance but not used it yet. 😂 the drive and the look are still cool. Thanks
I own a 2023 plus b5 love it and I think being base model not a lot can go wrong compared to ones with air suspension and sunroofs.
Thanks for the warning man. Really appreciated. I had positive thoughts about this brand but now not anymore.
Super happy with XC40 b4, so far 42.000km no issues at all (expect dab radio bug)
T5 is your simplest .
It’s been used for several models & been very dependable on maintained maintenance.

What does Jim think about the previous engines, from 2018-2021. T6 and the D5 models?
Can you please do a video for a W212 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
And thank you for your realistic reviews, they are gems 👍
Guys I really love this channel, great work!

Apologies for such a cataclysmic error. Not sure how we’ll recover
This is the review I was waiting for. Would you recommend buying a used one above 100K Kms?
X340i over XC60 T8, it has a simpler (and therefore potentially more reliable) powertrain.
