I dreamt of this song and woke up in tears. I hadn’t heard it in years but I loved Joy Division and New Order so much in the early 80s when I was young. Now I’m moved to revisit these bittersweet masterpieces.
New Order is touring now with Pet Shop Boys. If the show is anything like last year's show they do an amazing encore of Joy Division songs. It's easy to see how much they love Ian and miss him.
Ian's lyrics is good, but man is the music amazing. This is why I never forget about these guys. Sure Ian was the driving force, but without his band members, I don't think Ian could have showed the world his talent. He simply found the best band mates ever.
Avenues all lined with trees...Picture me...And then you start watching...Watching Forever...Forever...Watching love grow...Letting me know...Forever. Bless you Ian C.
Did anyone notice Barney changed the lyric slightly at one part, from "Forever, letting me know" to "Forever, where did he go", 3:57 ish? Ian Curtis reference?
Been listening to this band for 30 years, this is one of their great live performances. All this is Rock History now. I love the raspy, gravelly sound Bernard gets here, its an important stage when the electric guitar "twang" goes "sonic" and "feedback" seems to become a kind of harmony!. .. . Peter Hook found the right answer for all this too, his thrashing bassline is truly innovative, really powerful , as everybody knows. Bernard isn't really the vocalist that Ian was, of course, not the performer and showman that Ian was either. But his technique was original, no question about it. Both of them, plus their indispensable Producer (of course!) are what make the 2 Albums of Joy Division the real origin of "art rock". No one, not the Beatles or the Stones or the Smiths or the Cure, or whoever, can match those two albums for musical enfluence. . .to say nothing of Gillian (so focused and steady) and Steve (amazing and indefagible). . .Ian's lyrics show the enfluence of the English poetry he loved, like Wordsworth. The Eternal, for example. Among so many other things this band's traditional English folk heritage is obvious. June Tabor's version of Love Will Tear Us Apart Again, for example, wow!
I couldn't agree more. In particular, with your comment 'I love the raspy, gravelly sound Bernard gets here, its an important stage when the electric guitar "twang" goes "sonic" and "feedback" seems to become a kind of harmony!' I listen to this video on loop because I love this sound so much ( ... I'm serious).
i remember when i was 13 years old and i popped in substance into my brand new sony discman.....and this song blew me away!.....a fan ever since..im 32 now
Great video. I love that their live shows are so simplistic without a bunch of crap. I go cause what their music moves me not for some lights! I have been fortunate to see them perform several times and each time they have been great. They are as calydosope says "absoulute brilliance"
I do like raw live music and this is just that. Bernie has done a great job in his own way over the years and has never even tried to replace Ian in any way. It was great when after many years they started playing the Joy Division songs again.....superb.
Totally cool that the UpLoader knew the opening music is by The Feelies ! Their album, Crazy Rhythms is a great record, which spawned a zillion imitators.
You should thank the whole band and not just Ian Curtis. I like this song not just for the lyrics and vocal melody. The music is also superb and that is thanks to Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris, don't ever forget that.
yes and no, to our question. The answer is yes it's a guitar effect called Chorus. No because it's a bass played really high up on the neck, giving it the distinct sound. Lots of the early 80s "new wave" bands played the bass this way: The Police, The Cure, The Clash, Delta 5, Talking Heads
great!!!!!! i mean if curtis stills alive its because of this soundband, that sound it remains to joy division even if i dont ever born in that time!!!!!! rules!!!! CURTIS WE ARE HERE TNX A LOL FOR U MUSIC... RIP
they just dont make music like this anymore...not a lot of people except the true fans on here posting know about New Order, after all you guys are the ones still watching their videos 20+ years later...these guys are LEGENDS and belong in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame
After hearing Radiohead's cover, I really think this performance by New Order is FANTASTIC. The cover is respectful of the original, but this performance just brings it to another level of greatness. For some reason, New Order is musically superior even when it doesn't look like they're doing anything extraordinary.
Dude, take it easy with the name calling. I'm not hating on Barney's skills. He's one of my favorite guitar players and singers. But this is a statement Barney himself has made several times. It's the reason Gillian was brought into the band. You'll notice that live he plays more on the parts where he doesn't sing, especially on "Ceremony." Or watch "The Perfect Kiss" video. Also, read the liner notes to the Retro boxset. He talks more than once about his difficulties singing and playing
they are the best guys and yes because they do so many music styles- how can you class them??? they are house/techno/ rock/ pop. you cant stop thinking about their songs- no 1
Much better of a LIVE band NOW!!! The music sounds good!! But I could have sat down and closed my eyes instead of looking at them play!! LIVE at Finsbury Park is AWESOME!!!!
First of, New Order's debut album was Movement, released in 1981 only one year and a few months after the demise of Joy Division. Second, the song was written by Joy Division and the lyrics by Ian Curtis, the band's lead singer.
Bear in mind that gig was in 2002, 22 years after he started singing and playing instruments.... this was in 1984. And remember Gillian was recruited to the band cause Barney couldn't sing/play two instruments at once
What are you talking about? This is awesome. Ian just wrote the lyrics, the others did the music, don't forget that. They can play it how they wish, they have as much right as Ian.
I liked seeing Radiohead cover this and the Smiths song. The Smiths albums and singles have always been and still are on regular rotation for me because I like the songs and they are still good. If my band wanted to cover their songs I would be happy to play and sing songs that I have always liked at full volume having a good time. I think that is what Radiohead was doing, paying tribute, and they did it well. Being snobby about it is missing the point.
Good performance even if the lead guitar is a bit twangy. I forget Gillian could play guitar too, it's a great sight seeing the three of them thrashing away together. Seeing Barneys hair, maybe I should go blonde again.
Gillian is a great musician. Barney is a great guitar player, even if he doesn't always show it live. He has a hard time singing and playing at the same time.
well all we have to go by is some crummy recording, I love Joy Division too but they never recorded the song, and New Order did amazing job. give em some credit
@MustHaveRocknRoll both versions are by joy divsion, words and music, bernard tried the impossible and made a great effort this was new orders best ever A side and the words were written by ian, in a lonely place was new orders best ever track (7 inch) (again ians words) after that it was steadily downhill but what could you expect ?
I would say that Ian Curtis was at most 30% of Joy Division. He was an excellent lyricist and he did the vocal melodies. He was was an extraordinary performer. The rest did the music that is a big part of the Joy Division sound. When they because New Order, the dynamic changed, but IMO the band was as good as Joy Division up until their temporary split in 1993. The more recent New Order is not quite as constant musically and innovative as they used to.
I disagree, but musical taste is subjective. I was a JD and NO fan back in the day, and now 20+ years later, it is the JD songs that dominate my Ipod. To me, the NO songs were good, of the moment, but the JD songs are more timeless. Ceremony, however, is one of the greatest songs ever, and this is a fantastic live version.
I dreamt of this song and woke up in tears. I hadn’t heard it in years but I loved Joy Division and New Order so much in the early 80s when I was young. Now I’m moved to revisit these bittersweet masterpieces.

@@TheSlowSteve you deaf or something? it was over long time ago. nothing "amazing" there now, sadly.
New Order's version of Ceremony is great but it's so sad that Ian never got a proper recording of this amazing song
Yeah!
amazing a dif 3 yrs makes from the 81 show on tube to this. confidence showmanship just fucking brilliant
I was thinking the same thing. What a difference 3 years makes.
My favorite song of all time. I never get tired of hearing it.
*2022 STILL GREAT!
Ian's lyrics is good, but man is the music amazing. This is why I never forget about these guys. Sure Ian was the driving force, but without his band members, I don't think Ian could have showed the world his talent. He simply found the best band mates ever.
I love the rawness of this live version. That tone that Barney gets on his guitar -- awesome.
Avenues all lined with trees...Picture me...And then you start watching...Watching Forever...Forever...Watching love grow...Letting me know...Forever. Bless you Ian C.
Yes Bernard has a minimalist style that sounds like no other, and I think it has a real beauty to it. This song is a perfect example.
easily one of their best performances of ceremony, brilliant
Brings a tear to my eyes every time I hear this.
first time ive actually seen a good live version of this song
Did anyone notice Barney changed the lyric slightly at one part, from "Forever, letting me know" to "Forever, where did he go", 3:57 ish?
Ian Curtis reference?
That's the correct lyric m8, he didn't change it at all.
Most likely

christopher morgan Great read. I love your comment. Agree with everything.
I love Radiohead, actually. And the cover was fine. But nothing beats New Order on this one, for me.
Same here! 👌🏼
dude, how good cover song is just a cover... never better than original 😁
I like how even though Gillian is there to play guitar 2 the sound guy still turns her down in the mix
Hooky's bass sounded more powerful back then...
i remember when i was 13 years old and i popped in substance into my brand new sony discman.....and this song blew me away!.....a fan ever since..im 32 now
And I remember my old walkman in the 80's listening to it in the 80's
Great video. I love that their live shows are so simplistic without a bunch of crap. I go cause what their music moves me not for some lights! I have been fortunate to see them perform several times and each time they have been great. They are as calydosope says "absoulute brilliance"

beautiful, perfect song from start to finish..."avenues all lined with trees"
Never see this one, thank you for the upload!
I can't share my thoughts about this because they're IMMORAL when it comes to Bernard Sumner xxxxx
I love them because they transmit great emotions so sometimes fuck to the musical technical skill 👍
Totally cool that the UpLoader knew the opening music is by The Feelies ! Their album, Crazy Rhythms is a great record, which spawned a zillion imitators.
Yes, once Barney was the melody behind.
And it is so unique
dı dı dı dım dım...
in every song and every time, i can say this is barney.
Ah, takes me back. Thanks for posting this.
You should thank the whole band and not just Ian Curtis. I like this song not just for the lyrics and vocal melody. The music is also superb and that is thanks to Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris, don't ever forget that.

BARNEY! i love his simple guitar wokr. beauty above speed is what i think . though speed can be beauty.
Fricking Awesome video and song..
great!!!!!! i mean if curtis stills alive its because of this soundband, that sound it remains to joy division even if i dont ever born in that time!!!!!! rules!!!! CURTIS WE ARE HERE TNX A LOL FOR U MUSIC... RIP
Barney ur a guitar god. Miss u Ian..
great great great...thanx!!!

@Mygalej Agreed. Radiohead's cover was incredibly respectful. There was a lot of love for the original in that performance.
The Killers admit to being influenced by New Order, and named their group after a New Order song.
who cares?
Best video ever..
i love this song, it never gets old

Best New Order song EVER !!
Barney on his Les Paul and great to see Gillian upfront strummin' along too !!
Thats not a Les Paul, looks like an ES-335
they are the best guys and yes because they do so many music styles- how can you class them??? they are house/techno/ rock/ pop. you cant stop thinking about their songs- no 1
god damn amazing
good god sir good post !!!!
wow- that might be the best ive heard them live-
Interesting. Though I read that Gillian played guitar too, I think it's the first time I've seen a clip of her doing so.
this sounds awesome!!
There's lots of good music these days. It's not as if there wasn't any bad music in the seventies and eighties.
i was born exactly 6 years after this =]
Much better of a LIVE band NOW!!! The music sounds good!! But I could have sat down and closed my eyes instead of looking at them play!! LIVE at Finsbury Park is AWESOME!!!!
è triste...ma è meravigliosa questa canzone...Oh I love this song!!!
First of, New Order's debut album was Movement, released in 1981 only one year and a few months after the demise of Joy Division. Second, the song was written by Joy Division and the lyrics by Ian Curtis, the band's lead singer.
great live !!!
Oh well- WRGAF..I just recall Barney at a gig once saying that his Les Paul was perfect for playing 'Ceremony' so I just assumed that's what it was.
OMG i love that song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my fave new order song.
Bear in mind that gig was in 2002, 22 years after he started singing and playing instruments.... this was in 1984. And remember Gillian was recruited to the band cause Barney couldn't sing/play two instruments at once
and for me :) this performance is the best of the best
where did you get all this amazing videos?!
Amazing
Joy Division 🎸🎹 forever
What are you talking about? This is awesome. Ian just wrote the lyrics, the others did the music, don't forget that. They can play it how they wish, they have as much right as Ian.
Well said, well said.
loooooooooove them
timeless
nooo not a few days before, theres a live version by joy division on "still"
Yes it the last song written by Ian Curtis few days before his death.
Good god Barney is buff in this one
I liked seeing Radiohead cover this and the Smiths song. The Smiths albums and singles have always been and still are on regular rotation for me because I like the songs and they are still good. I noticed that too
fucking excellent.................
i concur..
❤
Good performance even if the lead guitar is a bit twangy. I forget Gillian could play guitar too, it's a great sight seeing the three of them thrashing away together.
Seeing Barneys hair, maybe I should go blonde again.
BIG TIME!!!
I agree.
wow extra fast !!
Looks like some one you only know the recent live performances of Barney. The old Barney from the '80s usually sings like this.
peter hook is possibly the most under rated over looked musician ever-incredible
Gillian is a great musician.
Barney is a great guitar player, even if he doesn't always show it live. He has a hard time singing and playing at the same time.
SoOoOoOo True!
For real.
A very direct to the point live performance, so far as body doubling, Hohenzoller, and quadrate apetures to female lead networks goes.
well all we have to go by is some crummy recording, I love Joy Division too but they never recorded the song, and New Order did amazing job. give em some credit
Agree
@JoeClipso fair enough then, gona make it my mission to find a good cover version you`ll like. jeff buckley hallejuhah?
Anyone know who the guitarist on the left is?
oh indeed
I would say that Ian Curtis was at most 30% of Joy Division. He was an excellent lyricist and he did the vocal melodies. He was was an extraordinary performer. What is the music at the beginning of the video? Thanks in advance.
"Moscow Nights" by the Feelies
Many thanks !
Such a powerful, powerful, songwriting coup de etat. This song, in my opinion, is the best song on their debut album, Substance 1987.
Peter Hook is a bass guitar GOD.
Anybody...? Aldine Mail rt..... remember Htx
Fucking Ian must be rolling over...lol
I disagree, but musical taste is subjective. I was a JD and NO fan back in the day, and now 20+ years later, it is the JD songs that dominate my Ipod. To me, the NO songs were good, of the moment, but the JD songs are more timeless.
Ceremony, however, is one of the greatest songs ever, and this is a fantastic live version.
they wrote this song with ian and it sounds basically the same...
whys the guitar so distinct, anybody know what they used, is that justa normal sound!?
I like The Feelies intro music!
New 🇳🇿
Stephen Morris: Human metronome. Spiffing :)
