Scotty, what do you think about the Toyota 86? what is there from Toyota and what is not, and do you think that they are good cars that will hold up over time? thank you
Scotty is a visual thinker. If you watch his hand gestures and listen to his words you can see that he's describing pictures in his head. I had to learn to quit using my hands to talk as it annoyed my supervisors. The R&D people didn't mind as they do the same thing. I never went to Grad school so I couldn't go over there. Scotty is delivering a huge amount of information. I say, let him talk with his hands.
Hi Scotty, I am from Austria and live just about an hour drive away from the place they build this car. In Austria the G-Class is more or less a car which a grand dad, a farmer or a ranger would buy so we are very proud to build this Supra here.
Correct because he DROVE it....even driving a base model BMW is infinitley better than any white goods Toyota. Dont be so negative...think about it for a while
The b58 engine is a masterpiece 👌 even has some forged internals. I heard when BMW put the mock b58 together from the R+D team it produced around 450bhp
I'm surprised how similar the technology in the new Supra is to my old 1988 Supra. The automatic transmission used Toyota's ECT system to include a 'power' mode and an economy mode. The shift points change really dramatically and the whole car comes alive with the push of a button. My other 3rd gen Supra also has the TEMS system, which was one of the first electronically-controlled suspension technologies. With the push of a button, the car would stiffen it's suspension for racing and performance, or give it more travel for a softer and smooth ride.
Both the Supra and the Z4 six-cylinder engines are single turbo, the power difference is due to different turbo sizes and tuning. The twin turbo versions of these engines are found only in the M3 and Z3/4 M. Also, the Z4 is no longer a hardtop convertible: it's now a classic soft top.
B58 motor is in both z4 and supra.... they both use a twin scroll turbo charger. The cars computer is tuned differently... I think that's about the difference in power. Same engine, same turbo. Show me the second turbo on the b58
@rockn roll I'm sure they ain't the exact same but they are the same basic b58 setup with a nice closed deck design. Its BMWs design and platform methodically taken apart and put back together by Toyota engineers with their own set of tweaks. A second turbo was not one of them.
This is absolutely true. Only the S58 variant of the B58 design has twin turbos, but that is not put in the Z4. The Z4 (non EU spec) and 2021 Supra are both using the B58B30O1.
It boggles the mind ey.. "Mechanic for 52 years" justifying the single vs "twin" turbo options... Someone hasn't understood the concept of twin scroll single.
Scotty, both Supra and Z4 are twin scroll turbo. The Supra was dynoed at 335 HP and over 400 torque to the wheels, not crank. It was rated as less HP because the BMW costs about 20k more, so BMW was afraid no one would buy its Z4 if you could get basically the same car for way less money in a Supra.
Correction: The B58 in both are “twin scroll” single turbo. The 2020 Z4 had more hp because it had a newer B58 that had not met Toyota specs yet. The 2021 MY Supra and Z4 have the same relative output now. The S58 in the upcoming M4 will be twin turbo.
Any car you use for a daily driver after 7 years will become a 💰 pit. At 7 year approx. 75,000 miles the list is (water pump replacement, belts, trans oil or clutch, diff oill, brake oil, major brake job, tires, coolant flush, coolent hoses replacement, valve cleaning, spark plugs & coils/wires,, turbo gasket/seal replacement, head light replacement-haze, alternator replacement, finally, new battery) this applies to any vehicle and when done any vehicle will easily go to 150,000 miles. Now, most car owners wait for total failure before addressing many of these items. So, reliability is a personal problem.
you are 100% correct. There are 2 books that people dont read. The bible and their owners manual. Also people beat their cars with constant gas-break-gas-break.
When I push the sports mode in the Jaguar Sovereign the car dropped down a couple inches and the rev limiter went up to 8000 rpm. Of course after doing that something would go "ping" requiring a visit to Jaguar for another $1,500.00 bill.
Worth saying because what he says isn't factually correct. The B58 BMW engine has a twin scroll turbo charger, not twin turbos. The S58 used in full fat M cars has twin turbos.
Sounds a recipe for road sickness. Could you imagine him scanning the road for traffic, children chasing balls onto the street and watching the instrumentation, and talking at the same time?
This car is faster than 98% of the cars on the street. Used to own a 5 series hybrid with this system. Uses electric and gas engine in unison, makes it stupid fast
Scotty you should talk about how when the car was made Toyota overseen all the parts put into, tested each part and if it didnt meet Toyota quality they scraped the part and put there own. Thats a better selling point in my opinion.
For the people who hate BMW and think its unreliable, i have been driving a bmw e46 compact 325ti for 6 years and i only change the oil every 5000km , it runs like a dream no problems at all .
@Zack Smith all the bmw parts on the car went through Toyota testing and was torn down. Toyota then brought it back with changes to be made for reliability issues to be resolved and it was. then it was all custom tuned by Toyota racing division to handle and drive the way they wanted so there is some Toyota engineering in the engine and suspension which where the main parts taken from bmw. the platform itself was codeveloped and is a brand new platform
The Fuzzy Pickle I’ve seen a few videos on it’s development process they also said if Toyota developed it alone it was going to be over 100k new also they would have used a Toyota straight six but they currently don’t have one for use and money needed to design one was not there so using the b58 and doing there own tweaking on it kept prices down significantly. I’ll look for the video. Also people don’t seem to understand it’s a new platform all together co developed it wasnt like they just took the z4 platform and made it there own both companies and equal part in developing it
Once it's out of warranty the only people who own them will be those that can afford them or those that can fix them. I don't recommend any German car to people who aren't in a position to fix them themselves. BMW has the best forums you will find. Nothing drives like them but there's a price you pay.
The electronically controlled suspension is impressive, but increases complexity. Most of your subscribers (like myself), are probably more interested in efficiency & practicality.
Havnav even if he was is he wrong? Toyota’s are the best made cars on earth. Not the most exciting or engaging but quality wise they’re the best. Scotty’s audience is the average consumer so he’s always going to recommend Toyotas
@@flyhacking5830 In a few years there may be new features that were not available when the OG head unit was fitted so an aftermarket one may be what you want. Also if the OG unit breaks a new one from the manufacturer (like Audi for example) are so crazy expensive that one of the later owners of the car will have no choice but to pay huge sums to fix the head unit.
I never would’ve thought Scotty would recommend a BMW but to be fair Toyota did break down the B58 engine to test it’s durability to meet their standards.
Honestly I'd rather have the 2020 with the B58 engine than 2021 with S58. Note that it's not just the 2 turbos. The S58 also has a traditional exhaust manifold, while the B58 has the integrated head, just like on all other engines in the family.
@Mario S. I've driven several of them , and I can tell you the cars are very well built. I think the main issue is that when something goes wrong, and it's past the warranty, they will cost Alot to fix. The RUclips channel 'Albon' has a series of videos where they fix up a wrecked one and talk about how expensive the parts are.
@@CaneSugarCane then you need to do some research....plenty of stuff out there. BTW come back to me when you find it.....it's not difficult. BTW your're living in the past kid, Toyota is no where near what it was...then again the competition was hopeless with some Exceptions - Honda, Mazda, Nissan ...now the game has changed and there's very little difference......economics
That part about the z4s B58 having two turbos is so false.. thats the s58. It's just a tune, fuel pump, and a timing chain difference in the TU versions of the B58 engine which are all second generation B58s there's no other turbo its just twin scroll and the boost targets are turned up.
That ZF transmission is probably the best in the world actually. I have 8HP50 in my car and it runs like a dream, very fast and smooth. Just don't follow BMW recommendation "life time oil" and change it every 50-60 thousand miles (ZF oil or Motul ATF VI, Liqui Moly Top Tec 1800 for example) like ZF says and you'll be good for a looooong time.
Yep, they both have single twin-scroll turbo. The difference is only an ECU flash tune, with a different tune you can get 400HP+. It's really just a software tune, you can re-tune the car, get more power, and dealership wouldn't probably even know it
Physical proof that Kilmer’s love for a vehicle is emblem-deep. Put a Toyota badge on a Chrysler and all of a sudden it’s the greatest thing since grilled cheese 😂😂
LMFAO I saw you driving this thing when you turned right onto Allen parkway, I was driving up Waugh in the other direction and spotted this shiny red Supra turning, had no idea it was you driving it, what are the odds XD hahahaha.
Hey, Scotty is Smart. He knows down deep inside that BMW makes great cars. I have always known that. That is why i own a 2001 BMW X5 4.4i with over 206,000 miles on the odometer, a 1996 Toyota Avalon XL with over 204,000 miles on the odometer and a 1994 Toyota Celica with over 336,000 miles on the odometer. Toyota and BMW, A match made in Heaven.
Just because the gear shifting is identifiable does not mean it is rough. Knowing when the gears have changed by feel is actually a good thing that has been demonised as though it not feeling them at all is the aim of driving.
@@moldyrefrigerator I still find it so funny that all of Toyota's sports cars aren't actually Toyota's. No matter, they drive great! Probably, why I have a Supra...
Scotty... you must have missed my comment on the last video you posted about this car. Both the Z4 and the Supra have the same engine and SINGLE twin-scroll turbo. There is a very small (not the 50 hp stated in the specs) difference in power, due to tuning. Also, the current Z4 does NOT have a metal retractable roof, it’s cloth. I have a 2016 Z4 with the retractable alum. roof (and it too has a SINGLE twin-scroll turbo). Don’t know why they went with cloth only on the current Z4, IMO that was a mistake. My car is both a hardtop coupe and a convertible. My guess is it was part of the deal they made with Toyota to keep people that want a hardtop away from the BMW.
I suspect that the little exhaust actuator is not the reason the car crackles and pops when in sport. My 13 year old 335 has such an actuator on the second outlet and it works constantly to remove drone not only on cold start but also at certain revs and engine load. I haven’t read up on what the b58 sport mode does to the ecu but it sounds like it’s modifying the tune and the injector overrun to produce the burbles. The b58 is an awesome engine and can deliver 500 hp with an ots tune from mhd. Great car.
I have the same engine & transmission in my 2019 BMW 740i, with an MSRP of $94k. I paid half that amount recently getting a CPO. With the extra weight of the 7 series (lightened with carbon fiber frame technology), it still does 0 to 60 in under 5 seconds.
I’ve got ZF8HP in my V6 Amarok. It’s great. It’s intuitive, knows when you’re going downhill and will stay in a low gear and engine break, sport mode is heaps sportier, it’s smooth. BUT....when it thinks you’re coming to a stop it downshifts beautifully and engine brakes...UNTIL third gear....then it just disengages the torque converter and coasts and if the light goes green and you jump on the gas it bangs back into drive like you’ve dropped the clutch in a manual. You could really damage it if you’re not aware of it, it’s just too slow to engage the torque converter, let’s the RPM increase way too much and then just instantly engages and it’s HARSH! Other than that? Awesome
You will have that till it falls apart from rust. Sold mine at 200k with never spending a penny on it other than tires and oil. My friends was at 350k with no issues.
The Z4 still has one single turbocharger but BMW's trademark is twin power turbo which translates to a single twin-scroll turbo. the supra has the exact turbo only that they cannot name it that way because of copyright infringement reasons. it's the same exact engine only slightly detuned, even though people have put these things on dynos and they were putting out 370 smth Horsepower to the wheels.
Ian Nah they’ve done their own tuning with it. Also I’m not 100% sure about this but I’ve also heard Toyota went out to even out different screws in the engine which affects reliability?

I can't stop watching your videos!
Haha this video is great! I did not realize it was not being produced in Japan 😞
The Z4M does not have 2 Turbochargers. It has exactly the same engine as the Supra. They both have a Twin-Scroll Turbocharger, which is one unit.
When these first came out he was trashing them😂
Came to say that. Now that he owns one, suddenly is a good car....
@@0Camus0 I'm not sure he owns one. Someone just let him drive it.
@brianhill4153 Its not the parts cost its the labour, genuine toyota parts are pretty expensive too but easier to change
That BMW inline 6 runs for ever with regular maintenance. Gosh I love that moor.
It’s going to be interesting following the reliability on this car; Toyota or BMW, or somewhere between.
Yeah Scotty will put it to the test.
I'm saying it's going to be more BMW than Toyota lol
Never seen Toyota attach their name to crap...
Dirk Turrell that motor didn’t come out in 2020 bro it’s it out for over 5 years
That part about the z4s B58 having two turbos is so false.. thats the s58. It's just a tune, fuel pump, and a timing chain difference in the TU versions of the B58 engine which are all second generation B58s there's no other turbo its just twin scroll and the boost targets are turned up.
The customer/Owner of supra literally made scotty millions of views and gave him a lot of fun and made him germam/austrian engineering fan. Noice
Scotty is the reason why i stick to Hondas/ Toyota's
That ZF transmission is probably the best in the world actually. I have 8HP50 in my car and it runs like a dream, very fast and smooth. Just don't follow BMW recommendation "life time oil" and change it every 50-60 thousand miles (ZF oil or Motul ATF VI, Liqui Moly Top Tec 1800 for example) like ZF says and you'll be good for a looooong time.
7:32 introducing the Scotty Seizure!
Somebody make a GIF already.
Scotty looks great in this car
Pretty sure the Z4 is a single turbo too Scotty.
Yep, they both have single twin-scroll turbo. The difference is only an ECU flash tune, with a different tune you can get 400HP+. It's really just a software tune, you can re-tune the car, get more power, and dealership wouldn't probably even know it
@@luka_abh B58 is a turnable weapon 🥴
darkwood777 yes but he is talking about the current gen, with the B58
Nazim Uddin 😉
The first person to make sense of the BMW Toyota thing
Physical proof that Kilmer’s love for a vehicle is emblem-deep. Put a Toyota badge on a Chrysler and all of a sudden it’s the greatest thing since grilled cheese 😂😂
100 percent agree with you
watch the video and he explains himself
Scotty is a legend , I’m buying that Toyota
LMFAO I saw you driving this thing when you turned right onto Allen parkway, I was driving up Waugh in the other direction and spotted this shiny red Supra turning, had no idea it was you driving it, what are the odds XD hahahaha.
ZF8HP stands for Hydraylic+Planetary, not high performance. All ZF autos are HP and not all of them aren't high performance :)
At 5:06 --- My advise to you Scotty --- Always go, "Whole Hog!!!"--
My BMW 2 series active tourer 220D XDrive has the same transmission and it is the best auto box EVER! They are fantastic!
Did Scotty start wearing rose colored glasses?! Did he actually endorse a German/Austrian product?! Am I losing my mind?!
2020 is one odd ball year.
You're not alone. I have been wondering about him too, lately.
It's 2020 my friend...
You tend to give things a chance when you're the one driving it.
He did not endorse it, he said if you have spare change.
Want to put some apex seals on a RX-8. Been watching your videos for awhile and you are the only mechanic I would feel comfortable with doing the job.
What’s this world coming to, Scotty loves this BMW!
But Scotty, the new BMW B58 engine only has one turbo! Only the old engines had twin turbos. Great Video!
4:17 you know thats gonna get reused a lot lol
Wow he did say that a lot until 4:29.
Sport mode behaves exactly the same way on my '23 GTI. Goes from normal sounding turbo car to loud popping exhaust and super tight steering/dynamics.
Sport mode = higher shift point.
Same with manual shift just less parts.
The z4 actually has the exact same motor and same size turbo but has a mild hybrid system too. The power difference is strictly from tuning tho
You got it backwards, this car is about 99% BMW.
The 1% are Toyota badges
InfernoCZ On my FRS, even the ‘Scion’ badge and ‘FR-S’ badges have Subaru logos on the back of them. I’m not even kidding.
@@moldyrefrigerator I still find it so funny that all of Toyota's sports cars aren't actually Toyota's. No matter, they drive great! Probably, why I have a Supra...
Rebadged BMW Z4... It's pretty dissapointing
I heard if you actually take off the Toyota Badgers there are BMW badges underneath.
The Cadillac Catera did that, it would run the fans until the car cools off properly when you shut it off.
Make no mistake: this car is a BMW. And that makes me an even bigger BMW fan.
Scotty... you must have missed my comment on the last video you posted about this car. My guess is it was part of the deal they made with Toyota to keep people that want a hardtop away from the BMW.
this Austrian Japanese, German car sure is super dooper SEXY.... 😍
not as sexy as you with your AR15!
@@NoName-nk5bi 🙂
It's a good car for hairdressers and women.
Great car.
So if this Breaks and became
"Endless money pit"
Who to blame?
Toyota or Bmw?
(Just a joke)
Scotty, not two turbos, it's just one, twin scroll. 2020 Z4 M40i has 6 exhausts ports, 2020 Supra just 2. Now they have the same head.
The name on the video should have been "BMW just made the best Toyota ever" 🐸🍵
Toyota has been making bmw not the other way around. Bmw doesn't even try to compete with Toyota's transmission.
MC LAREN F1 used BMW V12
Rolls Royce used BMW V12
Toyota Supra used BMW i6
The Best Way For Luxury&Performance
Exactly. And Dodge was helped by Lamborghini to create the V10 for the Dodge Viper
REV UP YOUR MONEYPIT!
*insert laughing horse picture*
ROFLMAO !!!!!! that made my day, thank you !
In 2030, Scotty would still be an auto mechanic fir the last 52 years. That number don't change. Love you Pa Scotty
Scotty, I’m really surprised you got a BMW
I will have to say this is one of the best looking sports cars ever. Ferraris included
Scotty’s cat approves too
I have the same engine & transmission in my 2019 BMW 740i, with an MSRP of $94k. I paid half that amount recently getting a CPO. With the extra weight of the 7 series (lightened with carbon fiber frame technology), it still does 0 to 60 in under 5 seconds.
2011??
"I may be wrong about BMWS"
Awesome
oh... well good thing i cant afford it. ig ill just keep my 99 prizm lsi
Bro those prizms are fuking tanks
What about a civic hatch from the 90s?
You will have that till it falls apart from rust. Sold mine at 200k with never spending a penny on it other than tires and oil. My friends was at 350k with no issues.
I'd get a GR Corolla if I knew how to drive stick shift cars.
ayyy prizm gang
The Z4 still has one single turbocharger but BMW's trademark is twin power turbo which translates to a single twin-scroll turbo. the supra has the exact turbo only that they cannot name it that way because of copyright infringement reasons. it's the same exact engine only slightly detuned, even though people have put these things on dynos and they were putting out 370 smth Horsepower to the wheels.
I don't understand why it has the Toyota badge when most of it is BMW
Not cost effective for Toyota to build so few cars. They'd rather make Celica, Camry and Corolla by the bucket full.
Because Toyota took apart the engine and made some adjustments to it. Along with the suspension which was fine tuned by Toyota.
Armando Garza they really didn’t do anything to the engine. It is 100% BMW
Ian Nah they’ve done their own tuning with it. Also I’m not 100% sure about this but I’ve also heard Toyota went out to even out different screws in the engine which affects reliability?
@John Edwards no. Toyota asked BMW for the chassis, engine, and interior. They went their separate ways after that.
Scotty does it again,well done.
