- BMW B58 has been making BMW great for almost a decade now and no doubt, it has been a great engine. However, as any piece of high end automotive technology, there are problems and reliability concerns. In this video, I go over the problems you could expect when buying a BMW car with the BMW B58 engine as well as symptoms and possible fixes. I've also have personal experience with this engine in my BMW X7 which I talk about towards the end of the video. Some of the common issues on the B58 engine include issues with valve cover gasket, excessive coolant loss, oil pump, oil filter failure and VANOS solenoids. A lot of these issues have carried over from the N54 and N55 engines, but luckily not nearly as common.

B58 is rock solid, and a superb engine. Still nice to see your comprehensive list of possible problems
Rock solid?
Honda's turbo engines dilute oil like crazy and toyota's been up to their necks in recalls lately. Standards all around are plummeting, even among brands known for their "reliability". Comparatively the b58 doesn't sound all that bad given what you're getting for the cost
I experienced the coolant leak from "Water Pump" so I totally verify your content. Thanks.
Did you change the water pump
Incredible video! So much detail and straight to the pointt, thank man. Love the b58 engine and it's good to see that it's not too many issues!
Probably a better engine than 80% of car makes, but people still want to crap on it.
Not crapping on it at all! As I said in the video, it’s a great engine. However, it does have issues and if we stay informed, we may be able to prevent some of those issues or at least be on a look out so a small issues doesn’t cause a lot of damage
As an ex BMW owner, everyone thinks BMW owners are idiots. Never quite understood the blanket stereotype but I do see many rotten apples in BMWs.
@@SimpleCarGuy loved the video. Only meant that most people don’t even try to understand how good these engines area
Your comment about the plastic oil pump parts help me decide not to by a used BMW, thank you and this is a fantastic video. My N52 had a plastic water pump impeller and failed on a vacation.
I think a lot of these issues today are being engineered in by design cost, like plastic covers, water pumps etc, we know they have a much shorter shelf life and can’t hold up to a decade of extreme heat cycles and subsequent gasket leaks. The best engineered cars are behind us today, it’s a great shame.
💯
Just traded mine in at 67k
Only problem was upper radiator hose was replaced and codes
134F04 Valvetronic, adjustment range:
Error bounds checking
135401 Valvetronic, Overload Protection
190302 tank-venting and purge air
Feinstleck: leakage Greater Than 0, 5 mm
12AD01 Lambda probe after catalytic converter: Signal Firmly lying on skimmed
I deleted the codes and put back on the original catalytic converter b4 trade in
Was still under extended warranty nevertheless
Always get a good warranty on German cars
I believe the X7 has the B58 gen3 and that one i heard has been having some issues
Great video very informative! I was thinking about a Rang Rover or this so I’m coming to a decision. Thanks.
Sounds like a winner!
This is great video
I’m currently looking to buy BMW 840 4door but now I’m stuck I don’t know what to do. From everything I have been reading B58 is robust engine but I am concerned about oil pump.
Thanks for making this video
Get a 2020 BMW 840i.
Avoid 2021-2024 due to mild hybrid recalls.
Go for the 2020 since it had a revised metal oil pump, stronger parts and a non 48v mild hybrid.
Trust me, my 2020 840i GC is above 100k miles with no issues. I recommend oil change every 3-5k miles and coolant changes once or twice a year.
@@lorenzo9036 whats mild hybrid recall?
Some mild hybrids cause water pump explosions due to the 48v battery acting faulty being connected to the coolant pump.
My car is on 120000miles and i have had zero issues related to the engine and my car has been tuned from new and i drive it extremely hard have even done track days.
That’s great to hear! Thank you for your feedback.
What’s your year and model?
What year and model
dope..
My car is 2017 and it does 0-100km/h in 3.08 second video on my channel
I have an x7. Love the engine and hate everything else about it. The active grill failed. One led for the front headlight went out. The center row is automatic and not manual, and the seats easily fail and are very difficult to fix.
Nice video BIG UP !
Nah mate should have said b58tu2 as gen 1 b58s has less of this issue.
The fix for the coolant consumption are insane and not true. Most of these issues are correct but my car has 0 oil and coolant consumption and 0 blow by. A lot of BMW problems can be avoided by learning about your engine and being proactive with maintenance. Also didn’t mention PCV which is also a problem for most untouched b58s
This is the 3rd gen B58. Different than Supra/M340i/M240i B58
How about the transfer case issue. Seems to be systematic to X7’s so may be worth mentioning?
Thanks! I will do a video on the X7 specific items, this was specific to the B58 engine
@@SimpleCarGuythanks! Great video, looking forward to others.
Ur an excellent presenter
Beautiful review. Love it. I still would not recommend purchasing any BMW with more than 50,000 miles on it.
B58 is a great engine some cars have been hit 200,000 miles (it’s a new engine so not a lot of cars have it it yet)
@@93Coupes It still feels new.. doesn't it? The B58 released in 2015, 9 years ago now.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu my 2017 M240I does not want to check its own oil. I'll be calling the stealership Monday. :( I LOVE the car though.
Bmw checked it out and said it was ok..... I hope they are right.
Thank goodness they are so cheap to buy and maintain 😂 It makes perfect sense to buy them after seeing what could go wrong. Each time I get an itch I just look at my bank account and instantly get back to reality.
BMWs are not for those people with light wallets. Subaru WRX and Honda Civic are nice and cheap for your taste
😂🤣
@@SupraSavyou’re right, they make people’s wallets lighter. That’s what they do
Nice video. How can I determine if my 2018 540i has the B58TU engine?
I think searching the vin
gen 1 b58 has cross hatching on intake manifold, and gen 2 has circles
volvo redblock b23a on paras engine piste
Do you have an oil leak around turbo inlet from intake and cooler hoses? Did you check? Theres an oil splashing all over those inlet pipe and down to the front steering electronic component
There’s normally some oil there no matter what and in the charge pipe but it shouldn’t be a leak or making a huge mess
How do you know if your G05 bmw has upgraded cooling package?
If you have the factory towing package, you should have upgraded brakes and cooling
Darn, I don’t have towing, that was hard to find in 2019. I DO have a whining noise when the vehicle is warmed up and low speeds whining. They replaced the front differential and no improvement. Also, I noticed I cannot do the oil measurement as it has an error just before 20%.
The whining is from the front, I’m hoping not oil pump 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
I’m under warranty and it goes back next week
@@ScottSellsSoCal The oil reading is the biggest red flag. You need to stop driving and get that serviced ASAP. I see you're scheduled for service. Hopefully they got it taken care of under warranty.
I was told to change oil every year or 11000 miles, but this feels way too long. Any advice out there for a new bmw owner...
Every 5k
Agree with 5k if you car about your car and want it to last
Does anybody have information about the hybrid versions of b58? Like in x5 45e
they're too new
So do you still have your i3 with this new to you X7
Yes, I do! I got the X7 for my wife. I still drive the Z4 and the i3
Oil consumption!
Don't really have oil consumption.
All turbo cars have oil consumption. He'll, my father is a subaru tech and he says even n/a subies burn oil. It's pretty universal nowadays
Sorry but all this makes me want to keep my N55.
N55 is a gigantic piece of shit plagued with issues
b58tu gen 3 has a lot of other issues. Author is just clueless.
lets see in 6-7 years
Gen1 B58 has been around since 2016, Gen2 since 2020… there’s been more than enough time to see how these engines hold up
@@realiize ok I want one
The moral of the story is, don’t buy a piece of shit BMW lol I had one before the fucking nightmare
Actually, BMW is ranked as the 7th most reliable auto company out of 20+ companies selling vehicles in the US, according to Consumer Reports magazine. Since their collaboration with Toyota before the introduction of the Supra, BMW's reliability has steadily climbed. Also, in one of CR's recent issues, BMW is now ranked #1 overall regarding:
Quality
Performance
Efficiency
Reliability
Interior
Infotainment
Ride comfort and interior quietness
@@davepaturno4290i think that ranking has change and that they are higher up now
@@Likethetacosauce The ranking was published recently (2024). I don't think they re-rank more than once per year. I subscribe to their monthly magazines.
Smug BMW shill: "...but like any engine...."
300,000 mile Acura: "hold my beer"
I was raving about this engine as well but if they wanted to take heat insulation seriously then they wouldn't use an aluminum block. An iron block (as seen with 2JZ) would probably be the solution to every problem.
Acura? Does not drive anywhere close to a b58 equipped BMW, not even in the same league. 300k Acura how many times have you had to replace the transmission? lol
@@james10165 The power steering pump broke once, and now at >400k last I heard [he] wasn't driving it anymore. My guess is the transmission finally crapped out.
But okay, [his] formerly owner E39 530 did drive a little better than his 2011 TL, but the Acura definitely drove better than an E60 5 series 🤮.
His E39 once needed a new alternator, and then there was a dead cylinder. And then something else happened and that's when he got the Acura TL shortly after. He said he'd never buy another BMW ☠️😂
What do you think of B58 gen 1?
🥸Disposable product because they don’t want it to last past 100k miles to sell you another and for used car buyers to buy parts.
must be a BMW, lol.
Tell us you're stupid enough to pay someone else over $100/hour to work on your car without telling us, bro.
These engines are made for automotive enthusiasts. Unfortunately, they are also sold to elitist schmucks like yourself who use them as a status symbol then complain about reliability any time basic maintenance has to be performed.
You seem like the type...
@wally6193 must be any modern product. But we'll keep buying the garbage and the companies will keep finding ways to fuck us
Not true my N54 has lasted almost 140k miles and I’ve seen N55s with 300k miles. Most bmw owners I know buy parts from FCP euro not the dealer.
Absolute BS. If change the oil every 5k and do the maintenance as prescribed, you should get 200k out of the motor.
I did out of an S52 and the incredible S54. That is with countless runs on the Tail of the Dragon, cross country trips and track days.
