The phone is dead. And it’s ringing.
Director Scott Derrickson returns to his terror roots and partners again with the foremost brand in the genre, Blumhouse, with a new horror thriller.
Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.
Starring four-time Oscar® nominee Ethan Hawke in the most terrifying role of his career and introducing Mason Thames in his first ever film role, The Black Phone is produced, directed, and co-written by Scott Derrickson, the writer-director of Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Marvel’s Doctor Strange.
The film’s screenplay is by Derrickson & C. Robert Cargill (Doctor Strange, Sinister franchise), based on the award-winning short story by Joe Hill from his New York Times bestseller 20th Century Ghosts. The film is produced by Derrickson & Cargill’s Crooked Highway and presented by Universal and Blumhouse. Jason Blum, Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill are producers on the film, which is executive produced by Ryan Turek and Christopher H. Warner.

Looks like a really good movie but dang yall giving so much away in the trailer... please stop doing that!

Whenever they do that trust me there’s more to the story.
Yea they showed too much in the trailer, prob gonna take the good parts out of it like a lot of movies do.

Looks genuinely creepy, however Blumhouse has to stop showing the whole freaking movie in the trailers!

Looked interesting but I had to stop it too. Oof I hate trailers these days 😩

I mean fair enough, but at some point you should just stop watching any of their trailers!

Decent movie for a three minute runtime. Apparently there'll be an extended version in cinemas, too. Not sure what else they could add, though.

LMAOOO 😭
im confused because i feel like i seen the movie already from watching this.
@@robbiemcbobbie8030 yeah same.
I think what made this movie so enjoyable for me was the fact that the characters are actually smart and not the common horror movie character type. I was genuinely so happy when both Fin and Gwen made smart decisions instead if making dumb ones that could've gotten them killed. Spoilers ahead, don't read if you somehow haven't watched it yet. Everything Fin did was just smart in general but I really gotta applaud Gwen because when she found the house, she got back up and rushed home to call the police. In a different horror movie, she would've barged in by herself. So props to The Black Phone!
Something about this is touching. The scene where the boy is practicing hitting with the phone and the ghost is there with him was pretty cool, but for some reason the idea that these kids were there to walk him through and help him succeed where they failed really hit hard. It was like they were his guardian angels.
made me want to cry a bit to be honest...because you just know, if the kid doesn't make it, he'll help the next victim like the kids....
What happens to the kids in the phone if the kids escape/ the dude stops kidnapping
Y’all twisted…..
What you are describing about the missing dead kids teaching Vinny (I think that's his name) how to escape through the phone, is like what if the Ghost children from Coraline are giving her clues and ways to get through the challenges to retrieve their eyes.
you talk too much
Ethan Hawke and the child actors really raised the film to a higher level, especially the sister knocked it out of the park. One point in the film I really didn't know whether she was getting beat up for real by her dad or whether it was acting, because that was some of the most realistic crying I have ever seen.
Whole movie was cringe, get outta here with that
@@radicalnrk12 If you ever buy kids, beat em with a belt and then watch the scene again. You'll see how good the acting was.

Apparently director Scott Derrikson used to get beat and the actress didn’t want to let him down with her acting
Ethan Hawks is easily one of the most consistent actors working today hes got range and almost always chooses great scripts and I feel like he generally doesn’t get a enough credit. His performance in First Reformed is one of the most convincing of the last decade imo
I know... Better then Mel Gibson, tome cruise , Bruce Willis and Brad pitt
He’s pretty underrated, training day is one of my favorite movies.
That movie broke me. Don't get me wrong, his performance was pure excellence but man, what a depressing film. I love his work. His horror movie performances are pretty good too - Sinister and The Purge.
I've Liked Ethan Hawke ever since The Explorers. We are bout the same age.
He is just an actor nothing more
What everyone is missing about the movie and the kids is... the daughter has visions (like her mother did) and dreams about events that come true. But Finny the brother... can talk to spirits. The boys the Grabber killed can communicate with him because he too has that gift from his mother. They just got different versions of her gifts. Gwen has visions...Finny can see the spirits
If I was personally charge of making this trailer, I would have kept the concept of the kids behind the phone out of the trailer. The main kid getting kidnapped by a magician with a girl getting dreams to help him is already an idea that captures attention. The kids behind the phone could have been a neat twist.
Very much so
Same. They could’ve cut from “don’t hang up” to when The Grabber opens his eyes (and kept the girl with the dreams part)
Clearly you don't understand trailers these days. MUST GIVE EVERYTHING AWAY! :p
I wouldn’t care for the movie if it didn’t have the kids calling him. That’s what made me think “wow this is unique and I need to see it”
I agree. But there may be a much darker....deeper twist than you know
This looks like a pretty interesting movie. It's a shame the trailer gave away too much.

One of the best horror-thriller with an emotional touch.
This movie is quite unique cuz it's horror-thriller where there are both a serial killer and ghosts.
I like how the story isn't just about making people scared or feeling goosebumps but it also has character development and a family story which you can relate to.
There are several touching moments which makes the movie stand out from the rest of this genre.
Also love the performances by both the siblings actors.

The movie is like IT (2017) and Stranger Things together. Plus the movie is based on a book by the son of Stephen King, so you might feel some IT moments.
I don’t understand why they feel the need to show the best parts of the movie, like don’t give it all away. Sheesh.
ok so I have some theory about Finn's mother. so we know how Gwen has those dreams and how it is shown that her mother experienced the same thing, and it's likely it was passed on to her. well I seen another theory that it also sort of passed on to Finn, and that's what allowed him to talk to the other victims, because he asked Billy did the phone ring for any of them, and he said that it rang, but none of them heard it, implying that the ghost kids tried to save the others, but they weren't able to communicate with the dead, unlike Finn. billy also mentions that the grabber himself hears it too, but pretends not to, so if this theory is correct, how can the grabber hear it?
well (and this is just a theory) if you look at Gwen's dreams and Finn ability to communicate with the dead, they all relate back to the grabber. Gwen has dreams about the grabbers victims, and Finn can talk to them, so there must be some connection.
and also, the grabbers really name is Albert Shaw, and in the books, Finn's full name is Finn Shaw, not Finn Blake. maybe Blake is his fathers name, and his mother's is Shaw, meaning that she is related to the grabber, most likely a sister, because the it's never mentioned in the movie (I haven't actually read the book yet lol) that he has any other family other than Max, but he still proably does.
so if Finn's mother is the grabbers sister, and she has the dreams, and the grabber can hear the phone, it's probably either started with them or was passed down to them. max may be able to do something too, but it might be somewhat traumatising so he dulls it with drugs, kinda like Klaus from the umbrella academy.
and to be honest all of them probably have some trauma, proably to do with whoever raised them.
like you don't just raise kids and one grows up to be a drug addict, one grows up to be a killer and also (if my theory is right) one kills themselves.
it's also mentioned that the grabber has lived in his house since he was a kid, and is familiar with the phone and how it doesn't work,
ok it's really late I'm just gonna finish this tomorrow sorry for any spelling mistakes
Tommorow never comes
Wow you're cool. Didn't think of it that way
I just found out Joe Hill (the author) is Stephen King's SON. While i was watching the movie 15 minutes ago, i noticed a lot of similarities with king's style. Psychic kids with powers passed down from a parent that passed away, villain that is also supernatural making both the protagonist and antagonist related as in "narratively" not biological.
As i see the how much time was remaining in the movie, i was wondering if there would be a cliff hanger at the end to make room for a sequel and extended universe because there's no way the movie would've ended without explaining the mother + why there's even supernatural stuff happening in that world.
Then there's that scene when she's on her yellow raincoat, in the rain, alone, and I'm like "oh she's about to encounter either the grabber or the ghost kids, just like Georgy in ITChapter 1... And she did. So predictable 🥹
I agree with your theory. Both children inherited their mother's gift to see and/or hear ghosts and it saved Finn's life.
Make sense

@hen ko Ghost children helping out an actual child that's held hostage from the antagonist reminds me of the Ghost children from Coraline.
They tell her to find their missing "eyes" to free them and she'll be free.

Too many trailers are setup like highlights of a film rather than an independent project entirely where the objective is less about impressing and more about peaking an audience's curiosity. I know that sounds obvious, right, but this whole trailer should've ended at the 1:38 mark, right after the boy picks up the phone and says "Hello?".

It's ironic that Hawke says, "Wanna see a magic trick?" because that's the problem with 3-minute trailers. Every time something didn’t work for Finney my palms sweat and I’d feel like I was there in the basement with him. All the kids were convincing and did some good acting.
The end is satisfying to watch and I would have like to see the cops be less of idiots. The cops suspicion through out was really low of the sadistic actor brother.
This movie had me too much on the edge , very wild and my emotions were on a roller coaster ride .
It's looking like a great year for horror. This looks great. Ethan hawk us criminally under appreciated in my opinion.
He is underrated as heck.
So when does it come out
@@cactusmalone I agree for the most part, but the scene in Gattaca where he berates his "superior genetic brother" was awesome.
The only reason I'm watching😍
how is he under appreciated? he's a very famous actor with a ton of recognition for his work. he's been nominated and won many awards (4 Oscar noms alone).
1st golden rule to all kids is this: "ADULTS NEVER NEED HELP FROM CHILDREN."
Huh, I never thought about that but you're right. It feels very odd that a middle aged person would need help from someone under 15 for anything.
That's true
Except when they are home and need to do chores? I get your point though-important message to convey to kids.
@@dave836 It's like, this "can you help me find my dog" bullsh**. My Sister always taught my nephews, "An adult doesn't need the help of a child for anything. If an adult needs help, they will ask another adult." This lesson should be taught in schools a hell of a lot more than it is.
Exactly 👍
The fact that they basically show you the entire movie and spoil the ending just goes to show how little respect most hollywood studios have for the intelligence of their audiences. Perhaps they are right to think so considering the state of this country.

This movie competently encapsulates both aspects of horror and mystery. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the way they’ve illustrated Finney’s character, his ability to communicate with the dead being the key to his success as he barely survives death itself through the phone calls. The directors nailed it with the chilling story on how the children’s harrowing experience was used as a learning tool to help Finney merely survive death with messages sought from those that didn’t make it.
Every glimmer of hope and light traced at the end of the tunnel as the boy gradually progresses conveys so much suspense as the film make initiates desperation from the audience for the boy to make it through. Absolutely loved the heart touching moment with Finney at the end on the phone with Robert invigorating Vinnie’s courage and bravery to defeat the grabber.
Not to mention Gwen’s ability to envision how the kids become captured through the depiction of dreams, very genius story telling from the directors. Wish we had more movies like this, I highly recommend this film.
I didn't know that was Finney's ability 😮 I thought that was just the previous kids helping the current kidnapped kid
