My Mother grew up in the time the original books came out. She read everyone, she had, and now l have the original books. She loved both the movie with Judy Garland, and attended the movie's premier. She also enjoyed the movie, "The Great and Powerful Oz" with James Franco, as well. My Mom passed away five years ago, l miss her terribly. I have learned so much from the comments recently left. Thanks too all of you. These tales and your texts are a great memory of her. Sincerely, Sharon

For those who do not like the darker element presented in this trailer, remember the original film was based on the first book. And the book is dark, creepy and has many elements of horror. (At that time it would have been much, compared to today.) However, it was the film’s adaptation that made the story into a light, musical fantasy. Because the film is many people’s first introduction to the story is why they would think the story was a wholesome family oriented type fantasy. It was not.
The original books are a 13 book series. Growing up I read them all. So much was changed in the movie. (For example: The Great and Powerful Oz was a shapeshifter who appeared to Dorothy as a head with no body, to Tin Man as a horrific beast, to Lion as a ball of fire and to Scarecrow as a beautiful lady. And in the books, the shoes were silver, not ruby.
There is a lot of dark wizardry in the books. The books caused a lot of controversy at the time and in fact, some groups managed to get the books banned and pulled from libraries in some cities.
Anyway, it’s been a while, but from the way I remember the stories, this movie would fall right in line with the original stories of the book series. I am looking forward to seeing it.
Check out the movie, “Return to Oz” based on the second book that is more true to Frank L. Baum’s original stories. But I still love the musical with Judy Garland. It is one of my all time favorite movies.

While at the time yes the aspects of creepy and horror got to me in return to oz. The moment I saw princess mombi..( I was like 9?) I was infatuated..that and woth the aspect of you could somehow romance her she could be a new woman every day. It's actually amazing cause I watched part of it and it gave me horrible nightmares and then the moment I saw mombi I was just like.
The whole thing didn't phase me..and I do recognize that I do have psychological issues..I mean I crushed on a woman that could detach her head..but in a way it's cool how the brain can compat horror with other things with the flick of a switch.

She has been telling everyone about it but they think she is crazy. The more she dwells on it and thinks it is real, the crazier she gets, starts losing her mind because all she wants now is to go back to OZ, but she cant figure out how to get back or why her friends from oz wont come rescue her. She starts Lashing out at friends and family for not believing her and thinking she is nuts. Finally they have her committed.

Yeah, This trailer was great. I wish every film could have enough interesting visuals and story hooks in the first thirty minutes that we never had to see clips from the climax that would give the whole thing away. Like in The Matrix, anyone who saw the commercial knew Neo would stop bullets by the end, and when he supposedly died, the commercial gave away that he wasn't really--or was only temporarily--dead, because he still hadn't done that.

I really like this take. The original Oz could be absolutely creepy and sometimes plain horrifying. It was a faerie land, ruled by faeries. The Fair Folk in traditional tales could be extremely hostile, and their lands alien, even eldritch. Nobody in Oz died - even when they were torn to pieces - but they could be destroyed by being eaten or through magic. And traditionally, those humans unfortunate enough to be lured into the fey lands either never were seen again, or came back *wrong.*
As long as Dorothy stayed in Oz, she never aged, never grew up and was effectively frozen in time, and that's how it was in the original series. But if she returned to our world to stay, after an extended time in Oz? It would have... changed her. And not in good ways. This is even a darker take than Return to Oz - it posits that her stay in Oz *corrupted* Dorothy and drove her to insanity, as any eldritch land would. There were a lot of good people and heroic beings in Oz. There also were abominations out of your worst nightmares, hidden in areas one could quite easily stumble into.

In 1982 Phillip Jose Farmer wrote A Barnstormer In Oz. Its a wild sequel to the original story that re-imagines that Dorothy only went to Oz once, then spent a little time in a hospital recovering from injuries she got in a tornado. Not wanting to spend her life in a sanitarium, she went along with the doctors' explanation that the wild tales she told of Oz were a temporary delusion caused by shock and injury.
Later she collobrated with Frank L. Baum as a silent partner on the Oz series and went on to live a normal, happy life, aided by quiet royalties. She did share the true story with her son who, in 1923 flies into Oz through a magical green storm.
There, he recalls his mom's adventure was really NSFW and UnFamily Friendly. Example: the Tin Woodsman was more like the Tin Headsman who cuts a bloody swathe through the Flying Monkey Horde.

As a kid I read the OZ books by Frank L Baum- I enjoyed them but as an adult I realized how disturbing they actually were. EG: The tin man's origins was that a guy was cut to pieces by an axe now his soul inhabits the tin man. The film with Judy Garland gave a whole different feel to the books. Then there was the female who exchanged different faces every day that she stole from other girls- she tries to take Dorothy's face. The 80s film 'return to oz' is far more accurate to the books. I totally look forward to this movie. 😈

Same with the books and movies, but I watched the original Judy Garland flick as a little girl on VHS at my grandparents house every weekend till it broke. Then my grandpa showed me he had a backup tape! (Love that dude!) The female you were referring to was Mombi, aka The headless witch, aka the Wicked witch of the North. She was scarier in the book. Pumpkinhead freaked me out for some reason. He was scared of eggs. And in that movie -Return to Oz she had a pet hen (name?) instead of Toto a little Carin Terrier. Anyway… your comment took me way back. Nice to meet a fellow lover of Oz. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. ☺️

This is what I wanted....I was always more fascinated by Return to Oz because the darker content. I had such empathy for Dorothy, being judged as a schizophrenic. We leave Wizard of Oz saddened that Dorothy left her friends. Yet, it is bittersweet: a union either means psychosis or Oz is real. We are left to question, "What if it were me?" Dorothy became real in my eyes because of her mental struggles. I still held hope that she had access to this beautiful world to escape the tornado and it's path of destruction. She deserved that reprieve after not only her physical trauma but the mental imagery she gathered from the aftermath. I am so excited about seeing this! 🤗💜

For those curious about the tarot reading and what its saying. Heres my take...
The Death card means transformation. It can be a really good card, death of the old self or an old life, she has it in the placement of just ahead of her. Shes about to undergo major and inevitable transformation. She appears to be represented by The Tower as herself which is seriously intense, a major arcana card and not common as as a "this is who you are" card. The Tower is sudden change, often by the hand of God, meaning SHE is the change bringer. She is the single catalyst for change. The 10 of Swords over her (what is in her way) is the worst card to get representing pain, deciet, betrayl, basically being stabbed in the back with all 10 swords resulting in the ultimate ending. Thats the actual 'death card', but doesnt necissarily mean she will die just that this kind of evil is currently a major obsticle. Note 10 is always endings. The Tower is the number 10 as well. Below her is Queen of Swords, I assume representing Dorothy thats who the reader asked about. The Queen of Swords is a woman who has really been through it to make it to her throne, using intellect and strength of character over brute strength to win her battles. She often sits alone. She carries a lot of battle scars, speaks with integrity and truth but can come off as cold and callous. The sword is double edged, she knows whatever she says can hurt her own self. Truth is the truth though she cannot tell a lie. She faces forward to the future.
The 'see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil' monkeys are on the table. Ironically the term 'flying monkeys' is coined to described people at the bidding of a narcisssist, subconciously programmed or trained to do dirty work so the narcissist appears innocent, can play victim while the monkeys overwhelm and destroy whomever is the target, or the actual victim (of the narcissist).
    Interesting! Well done.

OK aside from the drastically underrated 1980s Disney attempt "Return to Oz", NONE( including the 1930s version that we all know and love) of the adaptions or the spinoffs of L Frank Baum's original books and illustrations have come close to capturing the creeping childhood scares and horror that I felt reading those books as a kid in the musty 100 plus year old Public Library above the fudge shop in my hometown. The library had early editions perhaps first mass print hardback editions that you had to read in the library and couldn't check out. I'm already having phantom fudge smells again watching this trailer and can't wait to see the film. In the mean time while we wait for this... I'm assuming most you haven't seen the creaptastic fest that is"Return to Oz". i highly recommend it if you like the willies that this trailer gives out. it is a mostly family friendly film.. but not really lol. anyone who has seen it knows what i'm talking about even if they hate the film.
