Actually, the judges were on to something by telling her not to shout. When she performed "I never loved a man" for Aretha Franklin in 2008 (?), she said Aretha pretty much told her the same thing. You can hear the difference between when she performed that song for Aretha then and when she did it for her again at the BET Honors in 2014. I suspect that's probably why Aretha was giving her the OK sign at the end of the performance, but I don't know if that's the case. For me, personally, I am able to hear the difference in JHud's singing. She is belting more flawlessly now rather than shouting. Yeah, there really is a difference.

I won't compare to Patti because I don't know her well enough. but what I can say from what I hear, is that JH HAS a powerful and big voice BUT, she's doing too much, like screaming, and she doesn't need to. You can see it's not a natural belting: you can see it in her mouth placement, in her face and in her body. you don't feel love, you feel that she's trying to convince... alomost like angryness. And she doesn't need to!

Jennifer had amazing vocals but she didn't really know her voice back then, she just knew she could "sang" whereas Fantasia knew the ins and outs of her voice and that's why the judges favored her more than Jennifer because during this time Jennifer was good for shouting and not belting whereas Fantasia's voice was more distinctive and had a more emotive tone and she also showed more personality and charisma on stage
Jennifer's technique was not there yet. She needed to learn when to pull back. I really think it comes down to song choice also. Fantasia was brilliant at choosing the right songs.

When she didn't win that was a joke and she turned that into all the success she's had, her emotion is real and one of my favorite singers and people, period.

Jennifer had amazing vocals but she didn't really know her voice back then, she just knew she could "sang" whereas Fantasia knew the ins and outs of her voice and that's why the judges favored her more than Jennifer because during this time Jennifer was good for shouting and not belting whereas Fantasia's voice was more distinctive and had a more emotive tone and she also showed more personality and charisma on stage
Whitney Houston said it BEST there is a difference from being able to sing and knowing how to sing that take time

Jennifer's technique was not there yet. She needed to learn when to pull back. I really think it comes down to song choice also. Fantasia was brilliant at choosing the right songs.
ya right!! i totally agree on that...felt the same way too, never watched this season of idol but saw her on red carpets and found her a bit offputting...but saw this and audition and i love the girl now!! i can totally see Effie in her...

I don't know how many damn chills you can get from one song, she showed them all. Beautiful, talented and her voice is INCREDIBLE and has always been. When she didn't win that was a joke and she turned that into all the success she's had, her emotion is real and one of my favorite singers and people, period.
