Otherwise for example Melinda Doolittle would be a major star, instead of our being overexposed to Psy doing it Gangnam style. AI is arguably the most successful of the musical reality shows. Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, Carrie Underwood are major stars and JHud who didn't even win is a major star as well. None of it's imitators have that kind of track record yet - not even the Voice.

I’d rather win an Oscar and a Grammy than American idol. I met her when she was on tour for the American Idol concert that season and she was the nicest most down to earth celebrity I ever met. Such a wonderful experience.
This was the night that changed her life. She always had a great voice, but didn't know how to channel it on a pop show. She seemed out of place on AI honestly. Her eyes would pop out of her head when she sang. No one really liked her that much. Than she sang this and I finally *got* Jennifer. She received the most votes that night. She didn't win the show, but between this performance and the next two others, she was able to leave with viewers having warmed up to her, even thinking she had been 'robbed' when she got booted and the kiddos stayed. That made her story all the more sweet when she came back three years later and nabbed an Oscar for Dreamgirls :)

After Heatwave, I remember thinking that Jennifer Hudson needed to do a big Whitney Houston-style performance with big broad notes and not too many riffs and such. She did exactly that with this performance of Circle of Life. This was indeed the night that changed her life. She wasn't destined to win American Idol, but she had to make it to that week in that season to be on the career trajectory she is on now. During her time on American Idol, I recall having a conversation with my mother during which we agreed that if they ever did a movie version of Dreamgirls, Jennifer would be the ideal person to play Effie White. During the casting phase, Jamie Foxx was campaigning for Fantasia to get the role, and while that was going on, I thought that was a terrible idea. I felt it should be Jennifer, and ultimately the producers agreed.
And she didn't win...Either did Jessica Sanchez, Adam Lambert, and most recently that Jena girl. American Idol is a joke! I can write a whole essay to prove it, like I'm serious!
