Have you checked out the specced up X-class the New Zealand Hunter Adventures guys are driving? Also did you try holding down the parking sensor button for an extended period of time? Another car you could give a test drive would be in particular the old 2002-2010 VW Touareg’s. Keep up the content!

Be great if they gave you a beefed up version to really have a play with! Bigger tyres, lifted, snorkel etc. 😃

Awesome glad you enjoyed it. We didn't take it on the beach, just into the dunes south of Dargavile.

Great review and very relevant for what we are planning to do with the vehicle. What makes you say the engine is a ticking time bomb? Do you think the vehicle would have done better on sand with bigger rubber or was it the 4wd system that was limiting the car? Thanks!

      Christian Jacobsen thanks.
It’s not our belief that’s the engine is a ticking time boomb, it’s just some of the comments we’ve gotten from people. The 2.3L engine had been around for many years and seams to hold up well in Europe.
Like I said in the review if your not towing heavy loads all the time I think the 2.3L is more than sufficient.

4WD New Zealand Ok thank you, I need to do some research in terms of the engine. I am in Australia and this has been the most comprehensive and relevant review of the vehicle so far. We are looking for a good touring vehicle for National Parks and some Beach work, can’t decide between the V6 Amarok and the 2.3 X-Class. The Mercedes has the advantage in terms of reverse torque and 4L, so currently leaning towards the Mercedes.

And yes it would have definitely done better in the dunes with some larger tires with more sidewall.
The 4wd system works well. It works best in sand with the traction control turned off. Use the trans in manual mode but avoid planting your foot as it will override the gear selection and shift up.

4WD New Zealand Yep I agree it’s probably best to opt for the smaller 18 inch on the Power or go even smaller. Looks like it could be a good camping car!

Christian Jacobsen the X350d would be closer to the V6 Amarok. Both being a V6 diesel with around the same toque figures.
The X350d is fill time 4wd which is all Mercedes running gear and it has a selectable low range.

Mercedes gave us the Unimog and the X class. The Unimog is great - the X class is a Nissan Navarra! I just hope it doesn't snap in half!
I have one on test at the moment. Firm jiggly ride on the motorway - not very quick and uses loads of fuel for a diesel. 5 speed auto doesn't work well with this engine.
4 wheel drive system is ok but it certainly isn't a Land Rover!

Ford Ranger. The 2L twin turbo is a better engine than the 3L.

Parking sensors going off every thirty seconds ... that's it I don't care for any other information.... the car's no good, I'd burn it immediately
