  • This is a great 4x4 track with lots of fallen trees (bring a chain saw) and some very steep descents. The track is scenic and can be driven in both directions.

Nice, I'm an avid off-roader, just moved from the states . Living in the Bay of Plenty and ABSOLUTELY DYING to find some trails. We've switched up from our insanely capable Jeep to a mighty little Jimny- can't wait to see what it can do.
Wish this was on the North Island :(
    Cheers!

Thanks Anne. I am moving from North Island to South Island so have had a hiatus with videos while selling my house, etc. Regular videos will commence again soon. All the best and never stop adventuring.

At 4.44, it looks over onto the farm where I grew up. The porika holds some good, and bad memories for me.

Thanks Greg, well put together. It reminds me of some of the hiking trails in the Southern Cape. That distance error that you mentioned at the beginning, someone cocked up with miles vs kilometres (a common mistake)

Looks a fun track Greg. I'll put it on the list. Just got to get the health sorted out.

Great Video, I'm a fan of Nelson Lakes I think St Arnaud is one of NZ's top 20 spots, Lake Rotorua I've been there once and wasn't overly impressed but i would go back, thanks for sharing

It doesn't look as rough as when I went through there in November 2020 from Lake Rotoroa side. Very steep climb, tight corners and rocky but easy going once at the summit and down the other side.

I find it more interesting in the rain and there are fewer other vehicles on the tracks. With this one is there another way out once driven down

Those trees were cut when I went through end of May, after a big storm during the week.

I did Porika road in December with my 79 series. Enjoyed the track a lot and will do it again on my next trip. The hairpin corners where interesting in the 79. Requiring 3 point turns to get the truck around. In regards to the sand flies, well....we only managed to spend 10 minutes at the jetty taking some photos before we had to get out of there. The flies where thick...
I also have the 4wd books you use to lookup the tracks, but I use the books as supplementary to www.4x4explorer.co.nz/ for the South Island. I've found that the site has more up to date information on tracks as well as access contact information, etc. Also you can download the gpx files for the tracks, which makes life a lot simpler.

Hi Kiwi Adventurer I rode a bike in Africa and enjoyed the wind, the smells and the freedom. From now on I will comment on the bike suitability of trails. I hope to meet you on a trail one day.
