As an Australian in Australia i also really enjoy watching some real honest use of 4WD's that haven't been heavily modified. Beautiful country to drive through.
Great video. Looks like a fun trip. Love the sound of the tdi. Looking forward to spring when I can get my 200tdi out of winter storage and on the trails.
Great video mate, i live on the Gold Coast but 35 yrs ago I used to live in Christchurch and was one of original members of the company that bought Thompsons flat and loved the trip into the hut ,it was one of the best trips we used to do
Just when I think I've seen most of the good off-road channels, here you pop up. I'm in North Carolina of the US, but on the western end where the mountains are. That old Landy is an amazing vehicle. I drive a early Isuzu Trooper that many people confuse with a Landy due to it's shape. It always amazes me me how the old trucks did quite well without thousands of dollars in traction control systems. Nice video and the views were very good, even without a drone.
Love it 😀. I much prefer your video's to the ones you see were the engines are bouncing off the rev limiter. New Zealand sure is a beautiful place. I can see why so much movie filming gets done there 🤗. My Dad has a white Defender 90 😛
Thanks 👍🏼 I couldn't agree more. 95% of the time you don't need to rev the crap out of it to get through the obstacle. Look after your vehicle and look after the land. 🙂
Awesome video! This track had everything.👍 The river crossings were epic. The left side of you series seems to have acquired some creases I hadn’t noticed in previous videos. My restoration is coming along slowly. My wife is encouraging me saying it’s like eating an elephant; one bite at a time. Thanks Hayden!👍👌
Thanks Hayden and Ben. Loved watching this video. Just subbed. How cool and fun! Loved watching the river crossings as well as talking us through it. You guys make a good team.
Charging port will be full of dust, pocket fluff and god knows what else. Dude did mine in 3 miniutes with long skinny tweezers, was a ridiculous amount!! Cool vid, cheers
Oh man next time turn right into the bush track directly after the first river crossing (ford) and drive the whole river track. You got some great weather though! We were supposed to go in early dec but it rained way too much
Another awesome video Hayden 👍 Except the split screen with Ben filming you, I was just watching him hoping he would slip and fall into the river.... 🤷♂️ 😅
Another good vid. I was thinking the first track looked familiar. Must be 20 years since I did it in my lifted 3dr soft top Suzuki Vitara with Suzuki 4wd club. I remember driving across the first river and turn right and a tough bit with log to get over and then down into the river the whole way. Only prob was she was a bit light and I floated down the river during a crossing, still remember water flowing out of my electric window switches into the cab. Spark plugs out and turned the engine over to expel the water and phew all was well. Drove the 4wd track on the way back to reduce time in the river lol.
Awesome content mate, only just found you’re channel yesterday and I’ve been binge watching it’s cool to see the old landys out there doing it, I’ve found more tracks to go thanks to you’re videos, drive a safari myself but also a fellow Canterbury local
I had the same B engine/celica gbox set up in my series 3 until 5 th gear shit itself. Went back to a 5 bearing crank engine and gbox. Just need to get it rewired as it was 24v start

Great videos as always.. definitely one of my favorites channels to watch.. However I must say I was a bit saddened by the news you swapped out the LR motor for a Toyota motor and I think you said Toyota gearbox/ transmission? I have a NAS 95 D90.. and have thought long and hard should I ever have to replace the motor.. I’m really leaning towards keeping it LR..if at all possible.. I’m kind of a die hard that way. I’m It sure.. hope I don’t need to make the Dec decision for a very long time..😅🙄😩🤷🏽♂️
@@hayden_jones there are two huts, one is right by the gate, but the other about 1.5km as the crow flies and the return trip to that can be anywhere from 2 hours to all day depending on how things go.
Last time I went in there with a Defender we had to do a 3 stage winch just to get it round the first corner and we gave up after that... Don't think you'd have got very far with the stock 90 and the Series unfortunately!

Interesting that you have a Toyota engine and transmission. How did you mate the transfer box to the transmission and was there a big offset going to the differentials?
The Engine and transmission conversion was done years before I got it. So I'm not much help to be honest. Never had any issues with it though. Can comfortably cruise at 100-105kph (at 95db) !!!!😳

Cracking video. I really like the fact you do these trips in a reasonably standard vehicle, proof you don’t need massive tyres and lift.

Access past the gate is fun, but the ruts are getting big on the flat. You need bar work and big tyres.
